And i know what im getting into. I have wanted to be one since i was four years old. In fact my family calls me Doc, as a nickname. All i ever dreamed and wanted was to be wearing those scrubs, walking in the hospital hall way, seeing the people i have help, seeing the lives i have changed. To me the money is important, but the people will always come first. I get more satisfication from seeing a sick person well enough to go home, then a pay check. Personally i just feel the medical field is a dog eat dog world. It is only for those who can handle the life. Those who can not handle, are easy to spot. So all these people are mentioning, went into the profession for obviously the wrong reasons. My own people, my family members worked almost 40 hours a week. I didn't hear any complaint from them. Because they knew what they were getting into. They went in there with the right mentality. Those who just go for the money, are the ones who find it the hardest.

No job is easy.
I know you want to to be a physician,it's hard work no doubt
But you can make it what you want it to be after all the traning and fellowships
You can be a health department employee,low stress,little traffic,no calls,no weekends  and less pay or be a high risk pediatric anesthesiologist and make all the money with all the risks and time involved.
Someone has to do it,no doubt but it's still a choice.

2 close relatives of mine are already on high blood presssure medications in their thirties caused by nothing but stress.
Like majority of Nigerian nurses  theyare the major breadwinners and are always at work.
The stupid mentality of "we have arrived" makes things worse.They have the cars,the big houses,the high society Nigerian clubs to show for it and of course the wives have to work regular and agency jobs to meet up.
I've been in this country long enough and I've seen things.

I grew up around nurses, doctors, and surgeons. I knew their life like the back of my hand. I know the over time, the tirednees, sacrifices, the mentality, everything.

my husband and I also fall in that category
Nursing is just a regular profession but to Nigerian women it is a license to luxurious living and 80 hour work weeks to pay for it.

I had a friend who's father was a doctor and mother was a nurse. They went on vacations every summer, traveled, and went to Six Flags. It depends on the individual not the profession.

Did you hear me mention Drs?
I'm almost certain your friends mother works a normal schedule if not part time.
She is not the average Nigerian nurse by any stretch.

I have a relative whom I practically begged to sign up for retirement benefits at her job only for me to find out that she had opted to work on a regular "per diem" basis with no benefits because it pays her a lot more.
Only a Nigerian would think this way because they have a couple of mercedes benz,a minivan and a 6 bedroom house to pay for.

I'm sure you're reacting more to my style but I want to quench this nursing earning myth.
The average American nurse works her regular 40 hrs and makes an average comfortable earnings,(not rich) because her hubby also works
not so with Nigerian nurses.
They work their regular 40 hrs plus 40 hrs of overtime.
They'll work on holidays,are perpetually on graveyard shifts because it pays more and the kids are many a time left home alone all because of money.
I know nurses who have left underaged kids home alone overnight for weeks and months all because of the almighty dollar.
The kids don't learn how to swim,skate,don't do any activities because their mom lives at the workplace.
See them in parties,you can pick out the nurses amongst them.
first off they arrive very late, because they just ended a shift and look haggard and wasted from days of sleeplessness.
Most can't put a metal comb through their own hair because they have all colors,textures and brands of wigs.
They look perpetually sleepy.

Most Nigerian ladies here in America are nurses so most of my acquaintances are nurses.
Most have never taken vacations and taken the kids to a holiday spot.
not even six flaggs, talk less of disneyworld, because mom has to pick up her white colleagues shift to make more.

aren't they the only professions that can work 16 hour shifts non stop and do home visits the rest of the 8 hours plus volunteer to work for their white colleagues on their day off ?
The only profession where you don't have to even pass the exams to have jobs lined up waiting to hire you as soon as you get a pass mark.
That's why the average Nigerian cab driver or asst manager at McDonalds in America runs home looking for a registered nurse that he can send to the nearest nursing home as his beast of burden.
