Got into Houston on yesterday via Qatar Airways with my almost one year old baby. Had her last Nov here in Houston. Entry was hitch free. No secondary inspection, No agric check despite all the every every i carried and declared. I bless God for favour and thank all you constructive contributors on this forum for the helpful information.

USING QATAR
Getting a reasonably priced ticket was a real struggle. last year I got a good deal on British airways, but this year, the airlines were not smiling at all. couldn't get a ticket earlier as I had some deadlines I needed to sort out at work and to be honest, i had been looking out for a good deal for like 5Months, no show smiley. Anyway, I was undecided between Turkish airlines and Qatar since the price for both me and baby was about 485,000, but I eventually paid for Qatar on Friday 18 Nov as infants are entitled to 23k which is not the case for Turkish. And I personally think Qatar has a better standard. I had to download and complete the mediff form since i was over 33wks. On my departure date, i was directed to get clearance from Port Health, which I did without stress after the 1500 payment. My only issue with using Qatar was that no accommodation was provided in Doha for the about 8hrs layover. considering the fact that i was traveling alone with an infant, it was really stressful as i had to chill in one of the quiet rooms at the airport till my departure time. I didn't budget for hotel in doha, so was prepared for the stress.

I was also able to get a ticket for about 430k on Qatar for my mum who will join me in Dec.

TRAVELEX

I couldn't get PTA as their procedure had changed. I sent my brother as early as 5am to the airport to write my name and collect a number for me, but they had stopped that and now require that you must have checked in and gotten your boarding pass before you can join the queue for PTA.

HOUSTON POE
The officer that attended to me asked what I was in the US for, I told him vacation and delivery. He requested to know where i stayed last year when i was in Houston and if i accepted any aid from the govt, I told him and confirmed that I didn't accept any form of aid. i offered to show him my payment receipts but he said i shouldn't bother. he asked how much cash I had, and i told him $9650. he noted this on the customs form, stamped me in and sent me to customs. The custom guys were more interested in counting my money than checking my bags. So they confirmed the money and said i should go. That was how my indomie and other stuffs i took a chance on scaled tru.

HOSPITAL
Now unto the hospital choice, I intended using oakbend this time, though I used Methodist Sugarland last year, but this Ben Taub, seems like a more reasonable option. Please anyone with more information on Ben Taub, kindly reveal grin. my email is reziadewale@yahoo.com. Help a sister.

Let her be happy if that's what makes her happy.
We are too judgmental in Nigeria and believe people should behave somehow or not behave somehow. Obviously she's happy with the guy, so let her be.
Anyway I font blame you, it's Still these stupid celebs that will still come here to wash their dirty linens.
Tiwa's case came up, we believed everything she said about her hubby but we refused to believe what he said about her because she's Tiwa.
This is not a matter of mind your business. That. Man is not good for Funke. Period. But the problem with this kind of relationships is that when they've started sleeping with each other already their eyes are blind to all the red flags.

Madam Actress don't make this mistake. In due time you will meet the right man. In the interim focus on your career and seek Christ. He is the one you truly need. Everything in life is vanity upon vanity. Your money and fame will not give you eternal life.

Yes I'm supplementing with similac. My baby accepts it well. Got some from Sams club that I shipped to Nig with the rest of my purchases.

Hello house! Join me in thanking God for a safe delivery. Had my baby at West Houston Medical Center on 30th November and every night since then, I remember firsty's post, 'The vigilante is real' grin grin grin...especially if you are here alone and had to have a csection.

In all, I'm grateful to God for swift recovery and strength.

Phase 2; baby documentation, commences next week. Can't wait to get back home cry cheesy...

BTW, is there any one supplementing their baby's feed with formula milk? If yes, do you plan to buy some to Nigeria? Kindly advise.

If one has between 2 to 3 weeks before departure to naija, you can do it yourself without using an agent.

We processed our children's visa ourselves. No agent used.

Please share more info on how to process the naija visa from Houston without using an agent.
Thanks

If you find shippers who can do sea freight, it'll be cheaper for you cos they don't charge by weight but by the dimension of the box.

Just make sure you do it well ahead of time cos it take 2mths plus to get to Lagos.
OK. Thanks

Have you checked the weight and how much it will cost you to ship?

You can them log on to jumia or konga and compare in Naira what obtains here at home

In my opinion shipping something as heavy as a crib makes sense if u are buying a car and u put inside. Diapers, baby lotion and one year plus worth of cloth may. Be a better use of that cash. My opinion
Thanks favoredgal and bbiz for the response. Will weigh my options.

Please I'm undecided about getting a baby crib from Houston and shipping to Nigeria. Kindly share your thoughts. Those that bought from the US, was it worth it and what shops can one get a good deal from if I decide to get one here.

Pls, can I pay for my ticket directly to BA office instead of GTB? If yes, any idea of their office address? I have to pay by 2mao.

I have also booked on travelstart, my fear is the probability of difficulty in choosing my seat since I will be needing bassinet on my return leg.
I think it's better you pay at gtbank than at the BA office, cos payment at the BA office attracts an extra charge. Their only office I know is at the airport. But I guess they have another one inside lagos.

Pardon all my typos. Epistle is too long smiley

quote author=QueenWest post=39044449]Got into Houston yesterday via British Airways (I choose them cos I intend to stop over in London on my return trip).

I got to the airport in Nigeria early and didn't have any issues checking it. Was only requested for my fitness to fly which and I gave them a copy.

Requested for wheelchair chair service, but didn't use it in Nigeria. Started using in from London.

When I arrived Houston, there were some old people who couldn't really walk on the flight but didn't request for wheelchair chair. As the wheelchairs brought to the door of the aircraft were less one of the attendants operating the wheelchairs said you could just keep walking until another one comes., I said no as I couldn't walk and she asked 'you're having the baby now'? I replied her and said what kind of silly question is that.

Anyway I eventually got into the wheelchair and was taken straight to the front of the long que.

Cpb- what's the purpose of your trip
Me- vacation and medical attention
Cpb - are you sick?
Me- no, I'm pregnant.
I was sent for secondary inspection afterwards and after about 30mins, one of the officers called me and asked if I had a contacted a Dr. I said yes and handed over my email correspondence.

After studying it for about 5mins she hands it back to me, stamps me in for 6 months and tells me to keep all my receipts.

I proceeded to get my luggage(I had already discharged the wheelchair attendant at this time as it was becoming awkward remaining on it)

As I declared some food items, I was sent to Agriculture. all my indomie spices were seized as I had removed them from the pack. One of the lady officers insisted it was chicken indomie that's why I removed them from the packs. I asked her what I was going to do with indomie without spices and she said I shouldn't have taken them from the packs. I insisted that, thats how I always traveled with my indomie but doe where.....

My rice was also seized.

Every other thing like my palm oil, dry fish, dried Bush meat, all shades of Maggi, crayfish, starch, cabin biscuit, milo, milk, ogbono, egusi, spices, canned banga etc went tru.

I have settled in with soulcare (good choice). Got to town via super shuttle. Paid 56 dollars. Was taken for groceries as soon as I got in.

That's my POE story.

Any idea on how I can't eat my indomie?[/quote]

O boy! Getting PTA/BTA is like getting appointment to see Mr President.
I went round UBA, FBN, standard chartered, Access, FCMB & Ecobank today in search of a rare gem, $$$$$$$$$$.
No bi small waka o my fipple !
Not even one of these banks could give me $1 instantly as PTA. One has to apply for at least 5 working days before it can be issued that is if their bid with CBN is successful otherwise "on your own o". See story!!! huh

Gone are the good oldies when one walks into a bank with naira & walk out with $.
D sufa plenti sha!!!!
For banks where u don't own an account, u've got to open one for sometime before u become eligible to get PTA.
If anyone knows where I can get PTA urgently other than Travelex, pls help a sis!
Anyone in da house who got his/hers instantly or earlier than five working day since the last one or two weeks, pls kindly help me with info on the bank & process.
Thanks
I eventually got pta at sterling bank today at 199naira to a dollar. It was quite an easy process. Settled for British Airways. Fare wasn't such a good deal though. But I got to move now b4 I will overplan and end up giving birth in Nigeria.

i called Travelex on saturday, they are giving for 203.8. i told the guy that i will call this week let me check if the rate will reduce? grin
The exch rate for travelex at the airport is 197 if you include the 3.5% commission it comes to 203.8. This has been the rate for over 2months. Caution though, if you bank all out on travelex, you might get to the airport on your departure date only to find out they don't have dollars. They also prefer you come with your physical cash.

What I did in gathering up some of my dollars for my trip, abt 12k now is to use up my family and friends PTA allowances who are traveling and do not have need for it

I intend getting my own PTA allowance, that's 4k from sterling or access bank this week. These two banks are still selling.

In the spirit of giving back, I just want to share my experience on my visa renewal.

I have been a frequent visitor to the US. last Visa expired this September and I am scheduled to travel in Oct. When I was in the process of renewing, I was undecided about giving a Dr as my contact person and the long duration I intended staying (12 weeks.) previous visits were in the region of 10 days and not for childbirth.

After reading somewhere that giving birth in the US was not a crime and that honesty was the best policy, I decided to be honest about my intentions (Plan B was to port to Canada, as I have a valid visa) and proceeded to submit my application last week via dropbox (Mum and I). Thankfully we were issued the visas without any call for interview.

About Finalizing my plans to travel to Houston in mid October. looking out for any awoof airfare promo smiley

Hi everyone,
Have been a silent reader for a long while. Tot I should give back to the thread.

I arrived Houston via Atlanta first wik of June at 34wiks with my husband. POE was smooth as the officer didn't even notice I was pregnant. He was busy jisting with my husband and stamped us in for 6 months. I had to tell him I was pregnant and he asked me to step back so he could take a look at me and asked dat we take care of the baby and pay our bills.

I had my baby at oakbend at 40wiks and 6 days. The experience was awesome. Was discharged 24hrs after delivery as baby and I were doing great. Feel into labour on my own and it was discovered dat the baby was in a posterior position during labour. Opted for a CS and my doctor advised that a VD was still possible. Active labour started at 10pm on a Tuesday and my LO came on Thursday at 3.28pm with a birth weight of 3.73kg. She said that the contractions were needed for the baby to turn before dialation would progress. I was at 3cm for over 24hrs. I give God the glory as baby and I came out alive and well. For those who are rhesus negative, ensure u get the rhogam shot as its part of your bill.

My bills as follows
Doctor - $1900
Tests - $120
Hospital - $2300
Labour epidural - $900
Pediatrician - $335
Brown and associate - $155 (for mother and baby)
This is what I spent on the birthing. For the pediatrician visit, I used pediatric centre and paid $108. Also got a copy of my zero balances before leaving and travelled with my baby at 2wiks and 3days.

I had an awesome host who has become good friends to my husband and I. Feel free to ask me questions as i am willing to assist in anyway I can.

Information I have gotten so far has been very helpful.

Thanks to all the constructive contributors so far.

I plan to travel early Oct to New york to have my baby late Nov.

Any information on reasonable hospitals or 'packages' in New york will be much appreciated. Ive settled for NY as I've got free accommodation there.
