FamilyReforms To Make Emotional Abuse Illegal by r231(op): 7:39am On Nov 23, 2014
Home Secretary Theresa May is expected to announce new powers which will put psychological abuse on a par with physical violence.

It will criminalise for the first time those who use controlling behaviour, as well as violence, to subject their partners to a life of misery.

A person convicted of "coercive control" could face a 14-year prison sentence.

Ministers hope the new law will encourage much earlier reporting by victims who, on average, do not contact police until they have suffered 30 incidents of domestic abuse.

Police receive a domestic abuse call every 30 seconds, according to research by the Home Office and the Women's Aid charity.

Research also shows 1.2 million women a year are victims of domestic abuse and two are week are killed by a partner or ex-partner.

Campaigner Harry Fletcher, director of the charity Digital-Trust, said: "The main reason women don't report incidents to police is a lack of confidence in the judicial system and a real fear that the behaviour of the perpetrator might escalate as a result of doing that.

"The police tend to just deal with the incident that happened that day, rather than looking at the totality of the behaviour often going back many years."

The new law is expected to come into force before next year's General Election

Nigerian Man marries his own daughter to get her UK Visa

A Nigerian Home Office worker ‘married’ his own daughter to get her a British visa, The extraordinary scam was apparently executed by Jelili Adesanya while ministers turned a blind eye.

Mr Adesanya, 54, has lived here for more than 30 years and holds a British passport, but wanted his daughter, her husband and their four sons to join him from Nigeria.

He faked a wedding ceremony complete with a photograph of the happy ‘couple’ which helped fool immigration officials that his daughter, Karimotu Adenike, was really his wife.

Miss Adenike, who is in her mid-30s, was duly granted permission to live in the UK.

The pair are waiting for her to be granted a permanent right to remain before they undergo a quiet divorce and attempt to bring the rest of her family here.

It is expected she would try to remarry her real husband to get them all visas.

But despite being tipped off two years ago, the Home Office seems to have done nothing to stop the scam by one of their own workers.

Until recently, Mr Adesanya was employed as an occupational health nurse for the Home Office, working with immigration officials at Gatwick airport.

A whistleblower sent letters to the High Commission in Lagos and the UK Border Agency including specific details such as names, addresses, passport numbers and even a copy of the wedding photograph.

When there was no response, he sent emails to then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and ministers Vernon Coaker and Phil Woolas on February 1 this year. He heard nothing.

Mr Adesanya, who came to Britain in 1976, flew back to Nigeria on May 29, 2007, and held the bogus wedding ceremony a few days later at a register office in Ikorodu, Lagos.

A source said: ‘They paid people to attend the wedding so that the British High Commission in Lagos would believe it was genuine. The commission then gave Karimotu Adenike a two-year settlement visa in October 2007.

‘On her settlement visa application form, of course, she did not mention that she already had a husband and four children.

‘The date of birth on her Nigerian passport is not her real date of birth.’

Miss Adenike is believed to have aged herself by ten years on her wedding certificate to disguise the age gap with her father.

Although her settlement visa expired last month, she is hoping to be given the right to remain.

David Burrowes, the Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate and Shadow Justice Minister, was also tipped off by the whistleblower and wrote to the Home Office.

This time there was a reply, but it said that although the matter was ‘under investigation’, no further information would be provided because it could ‘breach of our obligations under the Data Protection Act’.

Mr Burrowes told the Mail: ‘I am very surprised and concerned that no action appears to have been taken, because the allegations are extremely serious.’

Mr Adesanya, who lives with his daughter in Dagenham, Essex, vehemently denied the plot and said he had never been questioned about the allegations.

He said: ‘Married my own daughter? I have never heard anything like this in my life. I deny it. She is my wife, not my daughter.’

However, asked to confirm his ‘wife’s’ date of birth, he said he did not know without checking her passport, and refused to allow her to speak for herself.

Unbeknown to him, his daughter had confirmed the arrangement when she told a friend she would shortly apply for her own British passport and ‘divorce daddy’.

Last night Jonathan Sedgwick, from the UK Border Agency, said: ‘These individuals are already under investigation, and I want to make it clear that abuse of our immigration laws will not be tolerated.

‘If we identify marriages which we believe are not genuine, we will challenge them and prosecute where appropriate.

‘We are determined to send home any foreign nationals convicted of these types of crimes once they have served their sentences.’

TravelPandemonium At Lagos Airport As Customs, Agents Clash by r231(op): 12:11am On Nov 23, 2014
Business activities were brought to a halt at the cargo section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday following a clash between officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and clearing agents over alleged manhandling of a senior customs officer.

Two people were injured in the fracas as people scampered for safety after sporadic gunshots were reportedly heard at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company.

A visit by our correspondent showed that riot police were stationed in the area with an Amoured Personnel Carrier. About eight custom patrol pickups were also drafted to the scene of the incident.

There was also intermittent shooting of tear gas by the NCS men.

Findings revealed that trouble began when the Customs Area Comptroller, Mr. Taju Olarewaju, attempted to enter NAHCO warehouse as part of measures to implement some reforms that would make the clearing of goods seamless.

Olarewaju, who resumed duties at the MMA a few months ago, was prevented from gaining entry despite introducing himself as the CAC.

One of the agents was said to have pushed him, a situation that reportedly infuriated other customs agents.

Attempts by other customs officials to prevent the CAC from being assaulted, it was gathered, led to the fracas.

Agents were driven out of their offices allegedly by customs officials, who allegedly reinforced from the Federal Operations Unit, while some were trapped in their offices, as they could not flee from the scene of the incident.

The President of the Association of Foreign Airlines’ Representatives in Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Nwokoma, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, said some agents were disgruntled by some of the changes the CAC had been trying to introduce to the airport.

He said, “We learnt that the CAC was manhandled and his car was also vandalised in the process by agents who have not been comfortable with the tight measures he introduced at the warehouse to reduce the issues of underhand dealings and shortcuts there.

“As a result, air force police and soldiers had to be drafted to the area to forestall further breakdown of law and order.”

An agent, Mr. Yemi Adegbusi, said that the CAC tried to gain entry into the warehouse during their break time, which was again the agent’s rule.

He said that the customs started beating up everyone, including women, at the cargo terminal complex.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Mr. Emmanuel Njoku, refused to comment on the issue.

Thank you so much for these positive updates....
Just wondering whether they have really done a proper kidney work-up and staging for his kidney status because dialysis for stage 1 kidney failure sounds very strange medically.
I ll suggest you diplomatically ask the doctor if the latest blood work on him still supports stage 1 kidney disease or a progression to further kidney deterioration to the extent of requiring a dialysis.
God bless you Hameed and all Nairalanders !
Victory will be his and all glory to God.
I spoke to the doctor and he said it is not only in end stage kidney kidney disease that you have dialysis that in some cases, you might have severe electrolyte imbalance in the body that you just have to dialyze.

He said its the case if end stage, the patient will need dialysis permanently but for him, it will be just this once. At most, twice and that's all
HealthRe: RIP DJDOLA- We Will Miss You by r231(m): 3:18pm On Nov 21, 2014
More Updates!!!!

Due to the chemical imbalance in his blood (from a blood test done this morning) Hameed will be having dialysis today. Remember we mentioned that preliminary results shows stage one kidney medical disease.

The dialysis will be done here at the hospital.

Bills so far!!!

We got a bill from the hospital today (they said they send it to all their patients every 7days. We got here on Saturday so today is the 7th
day)

The bill includes a breakdown of cost which was taken out of our initial deposit of 150k (see attached).

From the bill, we are due to pay 18,900. We asked one of the doctors if treatment will be stopped because of the money and he said no. He said the bills are sent so each patient has an idea of how much he/she is to pay but in this case, we will pay a substantial amount as we don't
want a situation where although they said they wont stop treatment, they might see us not responding to the bills as being short of funds and act funny.

The diagnosis on the top of the bill was due to the initial preliminary test result of stage one kidney disease.

HealthRe: RIP DJDOLA- We Will Miss You by r231(m): 2:27pm On Nov 21, 2014
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE RESULTS WILL BE SENT TO THE INDIAN DOCTORS AS WELL JUST TO GET A SECOND OPINION AS SOON AS WE HAVE ALL THE PAPERWORK FROM THE HOSPITAL, IT WILL BE FORWARDED TO THEM.

GOB BLESS YOU ALL

UPDATE!!!!

14:00pm - The diagnosis is out and the doctor says Hamed has "Liver Abscess". This is caused by an infection of the liver and he has been put on antibiotics in the hope that the infection will be cured.

The illness started about 3 months ago (according to Hamed) and hopefully, it has not gone beyond treatment.

The consultant mentioned that with the treatment he is getting, his urine will increase which is how the fluid accumulated in his belly will be passed out and hamed confirmed that he has been urinating frequently in the last couple of days.

Hopefully, there won't be a need to operate or have a transplant.

TEHN.
