CelebritiesBreaking News - Buju Banton Jailed For 10 Years by r231(op): 9:58pm On Jun 23, 2011
REGGAE artiste Buju Banton was today sentenced to 10 years by United States magistrate Jim Moody in the Sam M Gibbons US Court in Tampa

Florida. He will be incarcerated at the FCI prison facility in Miami.

The artiste – real name Mark Myrie – was found guilty in February of conspiring to negotiate a drug deal in a police controlled warehouse in Florida.

The charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug offense was dropped however.

The artiste was slapped with the heavy sentence despite pleas for leniency by his attorney, his children, movie star Danny Glover and other character witnesses.

Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, seemed resigned to accept his fate and calmy accepted the verdict.

His attorney David Oscar Markus has signalled his intent to appeal Banton's guilty verdict and indicated that he would move with alacrity to secure the artiste's release.

The sentence was handed down in front of a packed courthouse which included members of the artiste's family, his close friend Wayne Wonder, his manager Traci McGregor and reporters.

Many persons, including artistes and Banton's close friends Gramps Morgan and Delly Ranks who came to hear the verdict were turned back after court officials indicated that the courtroom was packed and Moody had already been seated at minutes to 9:00 am.

The sentencing hearing lasted just over an hour and many of Myrie's supporters and family members cried openly.

The artiste will serve his time at the penal facility in the state of Florida.
Myrie underwent two trials after the first trial ended in a mistrial in 2010. He was however found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five or more kilogrammes of cocaine, using the wires to facilitate a drug offense and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offence.

Banton's two co-conspirators, Ian Thomas and James Mack both plead guilty after they were held in a sting operation attempting to purchase cocaine from federal agents in a police controlled warehouse in Tampa.

The US government built their case around wiretap and video evidence which caught Banton tasting cocaine and making several statements of the purchasee and sale of large amounts of contraband.

Wallie:
Most people are just wasteful, period! In my house, all the lights stay turned-on until I turn them off. I keep telling them that I neither have stocks in the local power company nor do I know the owner! Here are examples:
1. Taking stuff out of the fridge and leaving it wide open while walking away because they’re not done. I stopped complaining and just close it myself.
2. Leaving the TV on downstairs with nobody there while watching another upstairs.
3. Leaving the light on in the whole house (3 floors) including the basement.
4. Manually cranking up the central heating during winter and walking around the house in shorts and tank tops! It is WINTER! If it gets so hot in the house that you have to wear a tank top then the heater setting is too high! You should be walking around in sweat pants and top.
5. Turning on all the lights in a bathroom and leaving it on when done! The smallest bathroom has 4 bulbs and the largest 10.
6. Wasting food. This gets to me. My rule is, you can eat whatever you want but once you serve yourself, you sure as hell better finish it!

Nairaland GeneralMan Stabs Friend To Death Over Disagreement On Ludo by r231(mod): 12:00am On Jun 22, 2011
In any game, there is bound to be a loser and a winner.

Probably, two friends, Ismail Adeniyi (23) and Olu Afolabi, did not realise this when they settled down to play ludo, an indoor game on Sunday.

After rounds of game, PUNCH METRO learnt that the two friends had a disagreement, which degenerated into a fisticuffs resulting in the death of
18-year-old Afolabi.

It was learnt that Adeniyi stabbed Afolabi to death with a broken bottle.

Narrating his ordeal in tears, Adeniyi said, "Around 7.30am on Sunday,

Afolabi and I were playing a game of ludo. Afolabi, who lost the game, became angry and began to insult me. The argument escalated and he punched me in the mouth before breaking a bottle and threatening to stab me.

"Immediately, I went to get a broken bottle and as we began to fight, I stabbed him in the chest.

When I discovered the extent of his injury, I went to get help but unfortunately, he died."

Adeniyi told PUNCH METRO that he and Afolabi were co-workers in a painting workshop and had been friends for years, adding that he did not know that what started as an altercation would lead to his friend's death.

He said, "This act was the handiwork of the devil. I have never commited any crime before.

If the police can pardon me and if the deceased's family can drop all charges against me, I promise never to kill again.

"In fact, I promise to take care of Afolabi's parents as an act of contrition. I will remain indebted to his family forever."

Afolabi, who denied being under the influence of any substance, said his mother had being hospitalised ever since his arrest.

"My mother fainted immediately she heard that I had killed Afolabi. My father is late and because we are poor, my mother was not able to send me to school.

If I go to prison, she will not recover from the shock of my being jailed. I pray that God sees me through this," he added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said the incident happened on June 19, 2011, at 33, Omidiji Street Okeodo in Lagos, adding that "Adeniyi stabbed Afolabi to death in a fight.

Afolabi was later rushed to Isolo General Hospital where he gave up the ghost."

"Meanwhile, Adeniyi has committed murder and will be charged for it.

I use this medium to appeal to parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to be of good behaviour and not to foment trouble as whoever foments trouble in any area will be sanctioned."
