ThoniaSlim:
Now that's were a lot of women go wrong. . .they focus their whole attention on the kids neglecting their husbands. . .only a woman who's husband wasn't worth it would say she would neglect him and save her kid. . .

The reason why we should all pray for guidance when making decisions that concerns choosing a life partner. . .because if you have a good man. . .a man who has always and would always stand by you. . .then he'll be important to you. . .

As for me. . .my husband would be as important as my kids cus he is not only the father of my children. . .but the vow I would take at God's altar already joins us together as one. . .so he is not just a husband but also part of me!

Jokes Etc › Gates Interview by r231(op): 7:40pm On Dec 08, 2009
Bill Gates organized an enormous session to recruit a new CEO for Microsoft Europe.
Five thousand candidates assembled in a large room.
One candidate is Ayodele, a Nigeria guy.
Bill Gates thanked all the candidates for coming and asking those who do not know Java program to leave.
Two thousand candidates left the room.
Ayodele said to himself, "I do not know JaVa but I have nothing to lose if I stay. I'll give it a try."
Bill Gates asked the candidates who never had experience of managing more than 100 people to leave.
Two thousand left the room.
Ayodele said to himself "I never managed anybody by myself but I have nothing to lose if I stay. What can happen to me?" So he stayed.
Then Bill Gates asked candidates who do not have management diplomas to leave.
Five hundred people left the room.
Ayodele said to himself, "I left school at 15 but what have I got to lose?" So he stayed in the room.
Lastly, Bill gates asked the candidates who do not speak Serb-Croatian to leave.
Four hundred ninety-eight candidates left the room. Ayodele said to himself, "I do not speak one word of Serb - Croatian but what do I have to lose?" So he stayed and found himself with one other candidate. Everyone else had gone.
Bill Gates joined them and said, "Apparently you are the only two candidates who speak Serb - Croatian, so I'd now like to hear you have a conversation together in that language."
Calmly, Ayodele turns to the other candidate and said, "Wahala wa o!" The other candidate answered "O gaju o!"

Romance › Are Women Unable To Take Compliments Like Men Do? by r231(op): 4:47pm On Dec 07, 2009
You look gorgeous - I'm a complete mess. Nice shoes - Oh this? they're ancient. Great bag - Really? It's not even real leather. These are just examples of some of the likely responses you'll get when you compliment a female friend.

And it's not just with friends. At home, we cook a dinner and any compliments are brushed off with "It's nothing" Praise at work is usually met with "Anyone could have done it " or "I had lots of help".

It seems like women folks are incapable of taking compliments in their stride which begs the question
Are they excessively anxious about themselves that they can't believe anyone who says something nice to them without suspecting they are either lying, pitying or trying to get something out of them?
Or has compliment-dodging just become a way of conversation with them?

Here is what some experts have to say about it.

Psychologist Susan Quilliam says: 'Most women's knee-jerk reaction to a compliment is to think that the other person is just being nice, or feeling sorry for them.

'The second reaction is: "What do they want?" Most women are suspicious because they find it hard to believe nice things people say to them. It's a self-esteem thing.'

Psychologist Phillip Hodson, agrees: 'Women are very self-critical, especially when it comes to their bodies. They keep waiting for the day they're a perfect ten - only then will they be worthy of compliments.'

Men don't tend to have this problem. 'Compliments appeal to the men's main vice, which is to be big-headed and have an exaggerated sense of themselves,' says Hodson.
'It doesn't matter how tubby a man might be, if you tell him he's a fine figure of a man, he'll probably agree.'

Do we women really find it hard to accept compliments?
Family › Man Injects Sleeping Wife With Hiv by r231(op): 4:39pm On Dec 07, 2009
AN HIV-positive man has confessed to injecting his blood into his sleeping wife and infecting her with the virus that can cause AIDS.

It is believed the man wanted to give her the disease so she would start having sex with him again, New Zealand's Sunday Star-Times newspaper said.

Court documents detailed how the man, 35, twice pricked his 33-year-old wife with a sewing needle laced with his infected blood.

The husband discovered he was HIV-positive - but his partner and children were not - during health checks imposed on them when the family arrived in New Zealand in 2004, Sky News reports.

The woman had said she wanted to maintain the relationship for the sake of the children.

But she refused to have sex with her husband for fear of contracting the disease.

In the documents, the wife described how in May 2009 she found a sting-like mark on her left thigh and two days later awoke to a stinging feeling in her leg.

She said, "I got up,  and I flicked the blankets,  I looked at (the husband) and he was wide awake."

The wife asked him if he had pricked her and he said: 'No'.

But she later found evidence of "blood sprinkles" on their duvet, which she said her husband tried to hide from her.

During a routine check-up four months later, doctors revealed she was HIV-positive.

The woman confronted her husband, who admitted dipping a needle in his blood and pricking her with it.

"All he said [was] he was sorry.

He said: 'I used needles on you because I wanted you to be the same as me so that you can live with me and you won't leave me,'" she said.

The husband has admitted willfully infecting another with a disease and faces up to 14 years in jail when he is sentenced at Auckland High Court next year.

Politics › Woman 64, Held For Cocaine Offence by r231(op): 8:35am On Dec 05, 2009
A 64-year old mother of six has been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for ingesting 80 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.060 kilogrammes.

The suspect, Mrs. Afolayan Elizabeth Adeniyo, who resides in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, was apprehended at the Maurtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, while trying to board an Iberia flight to Paris.

NDLEA, in a statement this morning by its Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the mother of six children claimed she needed money to pay for her children’s school fees.

“I lost my husband 10 years ago and I have six children. A lady that used to give me money and food is the one that led me into the drug business. She wanted to take my daughters abroad for prostitution but I refused. I want them to be educated because I did not go to school. She took me to Benin where I swallowed 60 bitter cola. She then gave me N10,000. After that, she gave me the drugs to swallow and took me in her car to Lagos airport. She promised to pay me 3,000 Euro out of which she gave me 1,000 Euro,” the suspect narrated.

Another fifty-five year old mother of four and five other suspects were also caught by NDLEA operatives for importing and exporting illicit drugs. Two of the suspects were arrested on their way from Brazil while five were intercepted during outward screening of passengers.

NDLEA Assistant Commander, Operations and Intelligence at the airport, Mr. Adeofe Olufemi Adeyemi, who is also the acting commander, gave the names of the other suspects as Omolara Owolabi Agbeke, 55, Aganama Elechukwu, 34, Udide Afam Okwudili, 37, Chukwukelu Ebuka Peter, 32, Nwachukwu Aloysius Nnamdi, 39 and Okwara Festus, 31.

Another mother of four, Mrs. Omolara Owolabi Agbeke, who claims to be a sachet water hawker at Mushin, was nabbed yesterday at about 9.30 a.m on her way to London on Arik Air.

According to the NDLEA, the suspect confessed to have ingested 100 wraps of illicit drugs, adding that she was promised money for the act.

“I am married with four children. I have been selling sachet water at Mushin market for the past six years. I needed money to take care of my children because I am tired of selling water. I did not tell my husband because I know he will not agree to it. I collected the drug at Mushin market, took it home and swallowed it in my house when the children were not at home,” Omolara stated

Another suspect, Udide Afam Okwudili, was nabbed on Wednesday, 18 November, 2009 trying to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam. The auto parts dealer who has a shop at Sadiku Street, Lagos was said to have ingested 85 pieces of cocaine weighing 1.625 kg. “I was taken to a hotel at Kirikiri where they brought 100 pieces of the drug in an empty pack of Nescafe but I was able to ingest only 85. They gave me 1,200 Euro out of the 3,000 Euro they promised to pay me. I did it because my father’s burial comes up in January next year and I am the first son,” Udide stated.

Chukwukelu Ebuka Peter, a street hawker in Brazil, was arrested on Saturday, 21 November, 2009 during inward screening of South Africa airline passengers from Brazil.

He was alleged to have swallowed 63 pieces of cocaine and was to be paid half a million naira. Okwara Festus, who ingested 87 wraps of cocaine was also arrested while returning from Brazil. He was to be paid half a million naira.

Aganama Elechukwu was on his way to Amsterdam on 14 November, 2009 when he was caught at the airport. NDLEA said he excreted 34 pieces of cocaine weighing 655 grammes, while Nwachukwu Aloysius Nnamdi, who lives in Spain, was caught on Sunday, 22 November, 2009. He had 86 pieces of drugs and was taking them to Madrid, Spain. He was to be paid 2,500 Euros. The agency said all the suspects will soon be charged to court.
Politics › Holland Jails Two Nigerians Over Human Trafficking by r231(op): 8:30am On Dec 05, 2009
Two Nigerians accused of using voodoo curses to force about 140 Nigerian girls into prostitution in Europe were sentenced to jail terms of four and four-and-a-half years on Thursday, the Agence France Presse reported today.
Four other defendants received terms of one or two years, while three were found not guilty by a court in Zwolle in the central Netherlands.

Prosecutors had asked for eight years in jail for the two main accused and up to four years for the others.

The trial on charges of human trafficking and membership of a criminal organisation, opened in March.

Prosecutors said about 140 Nigerian girls brought by the gang into the Netherlands as asylum seekers disappeared from asylum centres in 2006 and 2007.

About a dozen of the girls were traced, while the rest were thought to have been forced into prostitution in Italy, Spain and France.

Most were minors at the time, their ages ranging from 16 to 23. The Netherlands allegedly served as a transit point for the girls, sent by the suspects from Nigeria with false identity papers and instructions for an asylum application.

“The suspects used voodoo to influence the girls,” said a prosecution statement.

“They had to give blood, nails or a piece of clothing and make a promise to a voodoo priest to repay the -debts- incurred for their travel to Europe” - between 30,000 euros (44,400 dollars) and 60,000 euros each.

“That means that they would have had to have forced sex about 3,000 times and give up the proceeds. In a foreign country, far from home, with no way out - living with the fear of going crazy or dying if they disobey their handlers,” said the statement.

The suspects were arrested in the Netherlands in October 2007 after an investigation by Dutch police in collaboration with Nigerian and some European counterparts.
Politics › Lagos Evicts 3000 Beggars by r231(op): 8:23am On Dec 05, 2009
The Lagos State Government has evacuated 3,000 beggars back to their various states and neighbouring countries in the last nine months.

Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on Youth, Sports and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, disclosed this yesterday at the celebration of the 2009 International Day of Persons With Disabilities in Lagos.

He said that some of the beggars were sent to ECOWAS countries, while others were sent to the northern states and other parts of the country.

According to him, the move was part of government’s programme to re-unite the beggars with their relations so that they can live meaningful lives.

“This government has embarked on rescue exercise to remove beggars and destitute from the streets of Lagos so that they can be reunited with their relations and live a peaceful and prosperous life,” he said.

Badru stated that this act of reuniting them with their relations was better for them, than exposing themselves to the hazards of the environment such as living in uncompleted buildings, under bridges and begging for alms on the streets, where they could be run down by moving vehicles or used for ritual purpose by unscrupulous persons.

The special adviser advised Nigerians from outside the state to discourage their relations, who have one disability or the other, from coming to Lagos to beg for alms, adding that instead of bringing them to beg, they should encourage them to learn vocation of their choices in vocational institutions that abounded in their states.

“The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) cannot be achieved without the full and effective inclusion of persons with disabilities and their participation in all stages of the MDG processes.

“We must see to it that persons with disabilities are empowered with needed skills and training to be able to respond to various challenges and able to live a fulfilled life. We must individually and collectively ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are not trampled upon.

“It is in ensuring justice, equal opportunity and fairness for all that Nigeria and indeed, the world will experience peace and stability,” he stated.

Badru stressed the need to renew commitment to the principles of dignity and justice, equal opportunity and to make sure that the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was implemented.

“Globally, almost one in 10 persons is living with disability and recent studies indicate that persons with disabilities constitute up to 20 percent of the population living in poverty in developing countries.

“Many persons with disabilities continue to face barriers to their participation in their communities and are often forced to live on the margins of society,” he said, adding, “they often face stigma and discrimination and are routinely denied basic rights such as food, education, employment, access to health and reproductive health services.  It is now time to give necessary support to persons with disabilities for them to live their dreams.”

The theme of this year’s celebration is: Making the MDGs Inclusive: Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

Badru said this year’s theme was timely as the MDGs provided the best available framework for fulfilling the promise by world leaders at the summit in 2000 to spare no effort at freeing people from the abject and dehumanising conditions of extreme poverty.

He added that the MDGs established a unifying set of developmental objectives for global community by bringing together United Nations agencies, governments and civil society around eight key developmental issues.

“It fosters collaborative action to reduce poverty, improve health and address educational and environmental concerns around the world’s most pressing development problems,” he stated.

President, Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Mr. Adeyemi Okikiade, called for equal opportunities for disabled people in the political arena.

He disclosed that many physically-challenged persons were currently aspiring for political offices at all levels of government, while appealing to political leaders and parties to be ready to accommodate them.

“We implore our political leaders to include persons with disabilities in election management bodies, appointment structures, security and general political appointment.

“We strongly demand that all our governments, corporate bodies, religious and cultural leaders should avoid discrimination against persons with disabilities.   Public perception has been the main challenge confronting persons with disabilities in the society,” he said.
