Something quite interesting happened just recently. I saw a position advertised at work through the intranet. This position matched my fiance's qualification and experience very well, not to mention that it would also give her a unique opportunity for a promotion to the next hierarchy in her field of specialization.

I should also add that she's quite happy with her current job and employer but like anyone else, I'm sure she wouldn't mind leaving for greener pastures especially when the prospects are very good.

Anyhow, I chewed on it for a few moments. I have no doubt that she'll be a formidable candidate and could very well net the job if invited for an interview, buuuuut would I really want both of us working for the same employer in the same building,  plus there will be frequent professional interactions between my department and the department that placed the ad?

My first impression was a capital NO, but there's no way that I was going to deny my lovely fiance of an opportunity for career advancement.

So I shot her an email with the job description, told her to check it out and to let me know if I should submit her CV internally for the position. It wasn't even up to 10 minutes after I sent the email that my phone rang. It was my fiance! Well, guess what? She said she wasn't interested because--wait for this o--she does NOT want us working for the same employer! I feigned a surprise and asked her what was wrong with us working for the same employer. She said nothing o but that its awkward and that it would be best to give each other some space during professional business hours of the day.

I was thrilled but continued to probe her. I was like supposing you weren't working and needed a job quite badly, that won't she take this one? Her answer was the same, NO! And it was at that point that bursted into laughter and opened up and told her that her viewpoint/preference on this subject was essentially the same as mine.

And so my married pips, wey una dey? What are your thoughts on you and your significant other working in the same building for the same employer? Are you for or against, and why?
Romance › What To Do About Her? by r231(op): 1:06pm On Dec 04, 2009
A friend of mine is facing a real life dilemma about an ackward situation concerning one of his employees in the office.

You see Jonathan (my friend) employed Susan as one of his many female administrative staff at the Shipping business about four months ago. Now about three days ago he called me on the phone, sounding very confused and excited at the same time, he explained to me that the previous night whilst working late with Susan, he had as a matter of courtesy offered her a lift home.

Now on the drive to drop her off at home, Susan blatantly told Jonathan to his face that she lived alone and wanted to Jonathan to come in for a drink and a little bit extra. Jonathan refused and jokingly told her that she must be slightly out of her mind but Susan was not having any of it and continously pleaded with Jonathan to give her some even going as far as calling him gay.

Jonathan as far as I know is obviously not gay but was deeply uncomfortable Susan's "directness" and wondered what her motive was. He would not have minded going ahead with giving her some especialy given the fact that Susan is really well endowed, but Jonathan used the excuse of being in a serious relationship as a get out clause. Susan was not having any of that "I am in a relatonship talk" and took off her bra and then forced his hands onto her breasts. Jonathan being the stronger of the two broke away and eventually Susan was persuaded to get out of the car when Jonathan threatened to drive back to his home with her still in the car if she did not get out. On his drive back home Jonathan was confused as to how to handle her when she turns up for work the next day.

Now does he sack her tempting ass or give her one or act as though nothing happened.

Fellows, what advice would you give Jonathan given the delicate nature of what is at stake?

Family › Re: Trust In A Marriage:having A Joint Account With Your Spouse by r231(m): 12:11pm On Dec 04, 2009
There should be at least 3 bank accounts. Yours, your spouse's, and a joint account. NOTHING creates problem in marriage than money. If you each allocate some money to yourself that you NEVER have to explain what you spent it on with your spouse, your marriage will be much better. I NEVER want to know that she spent £35 on a tube of lipstick. Just like she never needs to know that I spent £150 on the latest and greatest electric razor.

You might also have an emergency, vacation, or Christmas (holiday) account. grin

Politics › Policemen Now To Bear Cost Of Litigations — Osayande by r231(op): 11:16pm On Dec 03, 2009
Kaduna — The Police Service Commission (PSC) has said any policemen or women who involves in any misconduct which eventually results in heavy fines from courts of competent jurisdictions will henceforth pay such costs.
Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Parry Osayande, made this known in Kaduna while addressing officers and men of the state police command, yesterday.

Osayande said the PSC took the decision in view of heavy fines which the police had been made to pay through garnishee as a result of recklessness of some its officers and men.

“The commission views with seriousness the problem of default judgment and the resultant garnishee orders and
will not take kindly to the situation where officers hide court processes or involve themselves in cases of misconduct thereby leading to judgment against the Police Force and the consequence of huge judgment debt.

“Court processes are arising from civil cases in the commands/zones should be brought to the attention of the legal unit of the commission for effective prosecution while officers involved in serious acts of misconduct would be disciplined and where necessary prosecuted and made responsible for damages resulting from such actions.

“The issue of the apparent lack of supervision of subordinates by officers is another worrisome trend in the Nigeria Police Force.

“Often times, because officers and their juniors involve themselves in acts of indiscipline and corrupt practices, the officers lack the moral courage to either correct or punish the subordinates when necessary.

“Such senior police officers exchange banters and share uncomplimentary remarks unbefitting of senior/junior officers and these result in loss of respect, discipline and break down of work ethics.

“The commission is determined to change this trend and will not hesitate to punish erring officers along with their superiors who are found incapable of taking responsibility imposed by the rank,” he said.

Celebrities › Ex-miss Argentina Dies After Butt Implant Surgery by r231(op): 10:25am On Dec 03, 2009
Latin beauty queen Solange Magnano has died after experiencing complications following a botched operation to boost her buttocks.

The former Miss Argentina, 38, underwent butt implant surgery in Buenos Aires on Wednesday but suffered a pulmonary embolism - a blocked artery - just one day after undergoing a gluteoplasty.

Her close pal, fashion designer Roberto Piazza, revealed the tragedy happened when liquid injected into Magnano's backside "went to her lungs and brain."

She was pronounced dead on Sunday and her funeral was held on Monday.

Piazza adds, "A woman who had everything lost her life to have a slightly firmer behind."

Police have since launched an investigation into her death.

The leggy brunette, who won the beauty title in 1994, is survived by her husband and their eight-year-old twins.

Politics › Nigeria President Umaru Yar'adua Faces Calls To Quit by r231(op): 3:23pm On Dec 02, 2009
More than 50 Nigerian public figures have called on President Umaru Yar'Adua to resign, saying ill health has impaired his judgement.

Several Nigerian newspapers carried a statement asking him to step down that was signed by senior political figures and democracy activists, among others.

Mr Yar'Adua, who has several long-term ailments, is currently being treated in Saudi Arabia for a heart problem.

The government has not yet reacted to the statement.

BBC Africa analyst Mary Harper says the wording of the statement is blunt and to the point.

It says the president's illness "has created a dangerous situation whereby no-one is in charge of the affairs of state".

The statement talks about "a vacuum of leadership" whereby ministers are "engaged in infighting" and "routinely flout the orders of the president".

Heart and kidney problems

Many of the people who have signed the statement are prominent figures in Nigeria - including Aminu Bello Masari, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, and Ken Nnamani, a former Senate president.

Our correspondent says their words reflect the general mood in the country, where there is real concern that the president's recurring health problems have rendered him frequently unable to do his job.

She says the front pages of Nigeria's newspapers regularly print photographs of a man who is obviously in ill health - his face deeply lined and ashen.

Although he has missed several important events, officials had kept silent on what was wrong with Mr Yar'Adua.

Last week they finally confirmed he is suffering from acute pericarditis - an inflammation of the lining of his heart.

He is also known to have a kidney problem, so it is likely that there will be more calls for something to be done to ensure that Africa's most populous nation has a leader strong enough to keep things under control.
