GAZZUZZ: Now I have nothing against rebuilds, but when only 3 major items out of many engine parts will be replaced @ the total cost of a low mileage engine is why I had to speak up. engines are made up of more than just crankshaft, oilpump and bearings sir. there are a lot more parts that have suffered wear and tear and they will not be replaced for under 140,000 worth of parts.
This Particular Rebuild is good for business. Again. 6 month warranty. Husband's been doing this over 20 years. We don't warranty if we can't back it. Parts were inspected and found okay. If they go bad it's 100% our cost both parts and labor so what exactly is the issue? Also, nowhere did I say we were doing a full on rebuild. I was very clear on my initial post what the engine needed. Again, this is about the customer |

oluwaseunla: I've been following both sides, picking up a few lessons. I think there are no hard and fast rules. Each case should be treated on its own merit.
Price of engines, availability of low mileage engines(which can be confirmed by the vin tags riveted on the engines at point of purchase), mileage of present engine, extent of damage of present engine are a few things to consider.
Some engines are available for dirt cheap, it won't be worth the price of a rebuild. Irrespective of belief, there is very little that will likely go wrong in an engine that has done less than 10,000 miles being sold as used (Again, history of cars the used engine came from can be verified at point of purchase).
Flip side, some engines are crazily expensive that a rebuild is a more viable option, if it can be done properly, like those crazy Korean vehicles when engine is more expensive than the used car.
Everyman to his own, you people will likely never agree to the other person's point of view, because each process has been tested by each party to work well for them.
Rebuild or replace? Ultimately a judgement call. Exactly my point. We presented both options and owner chose this so I'm not quite sure what team replace is up in arms about. We were quite clear on what we were going to do to the car to the owner. My peeve is team replace wants to be judge and jury for the customer. We don't. |

GAZZUZZ: This is Cartalk and we are here to learn about cars.
engines are not designed to last forever, but with proper care engines will go over 300,000miles without any major engine work.
the Toyota Corrola 2002- 2007 has an extremely sturdy build, I have seen them running at over 270,000miles on their original engines and on full synthetic oil without oil burn or engine rattles.
Case study above is a toyota corrolla 2004, came into the country around 2011 @ 106,541miles
clean bill of engine health judging by its service records in the USA.
Let's say between 2011-2018 car covered 30,000miles every year, current mileage would be (7 x 30,000) plus 210,000miles.
Ok let's say 20,000miles every year (7 x 20,000) plus 140,000miles
So we can comfortably say current mileage of vehicle is about 106,541miles plus between 210,000 - 140,000miles. Let's just assume 250,000miles.
Now the question is. What is best for the client?
a proper full rebuild?
Or a lowmileage under 36,000miles engine which is even much lower than the mileage of the car when it came into the country.
Food for thought
thanks computerglobal for the speedy Vin report as usual
as I said, this is Cartalk, demeanors what do you think?
Note the corrola will not receive a full rebuild, but certain faulty parts will be replaced.
Ah, I see. You're assuming it still has the same engine in it as when it arrived. What is that saying about assuming? |

GAZZUZZ: @ the bolded the engine needs a lot more. @ over 250,000miles ma.
Detail what 140,000 will replace, and then let's see if it is worth it.
Where do you keep getting that figure from? Plus I've done that quite a few times already. Go back and read. And no, the Pistons were not included because they didn't need change. Go back and read what when EgunMogaji explained to you saving me the trouble. It is worth it to the customer because the customer has a 6 month warranty on parts and labor. Remember the customer? This is about them. |

I will rather have one that was manufactured well, used for like 30-60,000km (18,000-36,000miles) asian specs Sharp toks engine Evolve or get left behind Gazzuzz. My disappointment is that you tried to lie to win the argument knowing fully well what you were saying wasn't true. We can do rebuilds you don't think are possible and/or worthwhile. Customers think otherwise. You'll continue to have your clients and we will continue to have ours. Over time, word will spread and we will have more and more. EgunMogaji was talking earlier about knowing clients won't be from Nairaland. I'm not here for them per se. I'm here so that techs like you see the future that is coming and hopefully come along because it's coming either way. At the very least, you need to consider and offer both options to your clients and let them pick. So far, it's 4-0 when we present both options. Will it always be that way? No, mostly with the environment we have. Evolve. |
Car Talk › Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 5:34am On Aug 25, 2018 |
As your can see, a reman is done by MANUFACTURER and carries same warranty as new. It is NOT a tokunbo which is defined as a fairly used part. Not even close- and you know that. I'm a little disappointed in you that you'd try to pull that tbh.

GAZZUZZ: remove engine put another one 6hrs, car is back on the road and will stay on the road for over 100,000miles no shaking. Cost of labour 35k Okay. Our labor for that was a little more and we presented both options with the caveat that we would not warranty an engine bought from third party. Customer chose this. The peace of mind option. |

You didn't answer about the labor |
Car Talk › Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 5:15am On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ: This is not new, when clients are on a tight budget, a lot of mechanics do stuff like this.
Just turn the engine upside down, throw in a standard crankshaft with oem Bearings and replace oil pump. Engine will run quiet. It's a cheap fix.
Does not solve oil burn issues.
If you have to teardown this engine and do a proper job from Cylinder head all the way to the bottom you will spend more than 300k.
You are yet to answer the question
What did you do to the crankshaft. Dude. Did you read the original post?? And you really think from everything you know about us this was our solution what you said above? WE. USED. A. REMAN. ONE. Attacking a problem (crankshaft/rattling) is one way of fixing presented problems.
Another way is giving a fresh start. Whoa! That's a lot of assumptions.. and wrong. |

Car Talk › Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 4:54am On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ: This is what I would consider a standard rebuild.
Brand new standard crankshaft. (Not a cut to next size)
brand new OEM oil pump.
brand new bearings.
brand new pistons
brand new piston rings.
there is no way any one will achieve this with 300k without labour charge.
Ild rather do the used engine. It can be achieved with remans clearly. We are doing it. Plus from our earlier discussions it was clear we have a lot more experience doing it If I'm not mistaken, Pistons were okay. Will have to verify with tech again. Total parts needing replacement with remans as previously stated was 140k. I know this flies against your belief we are expensive but: 1) we know what we're doing 2) no we're not Don't worry, I'll keep posting more of these for you so you'll see what's possible. This is the fourth "engine replacement" in a little over a week we have avoided. Shoot, didn't even have to tear down one of them as ivoryhouse can attest. I keep telling y'all, WE. ARE. NOT. HERE. TO. PLAY. |

GAZZUZZ: from this answer I am certain a used crankshaft is involved.
You have avoided answering a lot of questions, but it is understandable.
Did I miss something? No, I didn't avoid answering anything. Those questions were already answered when I said the owner had a 6 month warranty on parts and labor. You asked about parts cost, I gave it to you immediately. Or did you want a breakdown by piece because I don't have that as you know I'm not there. Then major2013 asked about new or used which I just thought was inane given how clear I have been in the past about how we go about things even in this same thread. Then, in an attempt to be saucy, he asked where we would source the motor when I clearly stated we were not replacing the motor? At that price, parts are reman if not we wouldn't offer a warranty at all remember? We don't warranty parts that are not ours and we don't sell used or toks. I thought that was previously established. To cap it all, under normal circumstances I'd have the time and motivation to explain all that again from mayor2013's first attempted dig. Right now however after almost three months, I have more time for Daddy RADU than to go over the same thing I clearly explained before again. I'm sure you've noticed my activity drop significantly on Nairaland |
