Then I guess I understand your stand on replacing an engine.

NIGERIAN market is ruled out as an option.

I explained that in the other thread you quoted a long time ago..

Hahaha I personally don't like using gloves also but at my workplace... Dem no dey carry safety play grin grin
Gloves are not really compulsory depending on what you are doing but glasses are a must even when just walking around the facility angry angry

Hope you noticed the YouTube bits in the previous quote
Yup I did. I emailed you but now I'm thinking I'll wait for the redo.

Easy, easy, easy.... calling out Radautoworks and Gazzuzz especially angry

I would advise you both post no more here, as it is getting a little personal.

Now, there is a difference between a repair and a rebuild. When you replace few components like was done on the Corolla in discuss, it should not be called a rebuild. Rebuild and repair do not have same warranty, because you can only warranty the replaced part.

If a full rebuild is carried out, the warranty should not be less than a year.

Most times, a Tech's marketing capacity plays a critical role in swaying the customer's decision. If I can get higher warranty on replacement than a repair or rebuild at same cost, I will go with replacement.

Both approaches come with considerable analysis before deciding. Know when to repair, rebuild or replace.

Peace.
Concur. Thanks. And notice I didn't call it a rebuild when I posted. I simply said they didn't need a replacement.

"New one. Toyota Corolla. Owner ready for engine replacement but really all it needs is crankshaft and oil pump. Owner will have a 6 month warranty parts and labor on the repair."

You missed some older threads explaining this.

If client insisted on a replacement. Where would you source your engine from?
We would refer them to team replace unless they were willing to import one of ours.

sounds like my kind of quote grin funny thing is I doubt this car ever got to my workshop
It didn't. It was a sight unseen recommendation which is part of why he was upset.

Before we go far, nothing personal, just talking CAR.

meanwhile pitokowe I am sure I did not open your engine and put those tools in there, please clear the air because I have no knowledge of this.

No one said you did. You're not incompetent. I said you recommended the 300k replacement to him.

Depends on what they are doing. They have them. Glen personally hates gloves and never uses them. Occasionally, glasses.

Imagine the wealth of info he would provide cartalk if he signs up.

meanwhile, a 2az-fe aluminum engine with overheating. Longterm a Full rebuild would be better off, not just replacing Headgasket and re-threading the block. piston rings and crankshaft seals are affected by sever overheating.

If rebuild was an option, it should have been more detailed.

replacement with low mileage engine would save client repeated visits to workshop overtime for other unrelated issues.

Possibly client had a lower budget in mind for this fix.
Here's the thing. When I came in the scene and tried to help people, you took umbrage and I apologized and bowed out did I not?

Then you put this thread out there and some people took your view and others didn't. Why are you so upset? For the most part I've left you alone even when your diagnosis or advice was clearly wrong but didn't say a word. Nairaland is after all your playground. But if you come at me directly, I will respond especially when I know you are wrong.

In this case, you came at me over the Corolla and I tried to soft pedal it. I eventually had to let you know you were working on the wrong assumptions so you couldn't pull off what we did. Your pretty much changed topic when you realised that it was in fact possible.

Then you chose to switch to this vehicle and you're not even right about the kind of car it is! Then you call me evil. For presenting another point of view from yours? The crazy thing is that this vehicle was originally your repair but the customer wasn't satisfied with your advice but I never revealed that it was you until now How does this make me evil for presenting an alternative?

I put it to the house/your demeanors: "are my actions in fact evil"?

Exactly. That's why I told who it was. Again, 100% confident and transparent.

That is also why he hasn't posted his story yet. He is taking his time before he does and I'm fine with that.

Cartalk would be much more Fun if Glen Can talk to us, reminds me of sienna.

Well the point again in this camry repair process is, you went for the presented faults.

You made the engine replacement look like it was Evil.

Overheating solved yes.

Short block replaced No.

Piston rings replaced No.

Crankshaft oil seals replaced NO.

client is happy again for 6months.
Such a strong word! I'm not sure how I made it look evil. You started this thread and we both presented our cases so....

Many people on Nairaland have talked to Glen. Look through the threads. If you want to go up against him, your funeral. I'm more your speed.

Again, I'm not sure where your are getting these symptoms because those weren't the problem when he came lol. You assume things A LOT.

Actually, I wasn't going to bring it up BUT from what I understand, YOU presented a replacement choice to the customer and we presented ours. He chose ours. We never spoke to him about a replacement because YOU already had so.... Also, not a Camry.

The point to note is: let the choice/options be available for the customer.. Then customer chooses whichever he/she prefers
Thank you!

Abeg cartalkers let's take it easy on aunty Radu, we would not want to make baby Radu come earlier than expected because of cartalk tension grin grin
This one no be tension lol. If it was, I'd have called in the big gun already. This is a healthy debate. I keep telling them if they want to learn something new to come see at the shop but they won't take me up on it.

* in color purple voice "all my life I've had to fight" LMAO.

Do you know what it is like being female in male-dominated industries? This is the third one I'll get into and everyone wants to test you. That's why I learned to only talk when I'm sure and to STFU at all other times.

GAZZUZZ:
It's a 2az-fe engine 2002-2004.

Now standard repair process would be to replace the short block and machine the head.

How did that happen under N113,000 with labour inclusive?

did you re-thread the worn block? wink

We like rebuilds too.

Would you like to talk to Glen so he can walk you through it grin? And yes, machining was part of it. As far as results and cost breakdown, you can ask the owner Pitokwe. While you're at it, ask him what kind of car it is cheesy

That's The difference between 2 of us. You are in marketing I am a mechanic.

You're a mechanic but neither is me or my partner. I am a lot of things and don't forget that my partner is an ASE master tech of 35 years. Haven't needed him yet and I'm the reserve team not even the A team lol.

corrola is pending, let's get to the camry with the stripped bolt issue.

today I no go work and I have a lot of free time on my hands.

strip Bolt on a 2az engine fixed @ 110,000 instead of replacing.

What did you replace?

did you ensure client will not have to bother with oil burn issues in near future?

What was the cost break down?

Of course not, we'd rather the car catch fire! More work for us!

How about you start giving cost breakdowns of your repairs? And that wasn't a Camry
Car Talk › Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 8:41am On Aug 25, 2018
oluwaseunla:
Yes ma'am. I understand your process. Only pointing out to him that the final cost of rebuild will be dependent on extent of damage of the engine.
I understood. That's why I clarified this particular case before he asked because I figured that was coming next.

GAZZUZZ:
The Term retail should refer to client buying single part.
And it does. That's what I would sell the part for is someone wanted to buy it which tells you I get it for less than that. Now do you want to reevaluate your math on what it would cost us to do this repair and if it's possible it not? smiley

I have been trying to be subtle when you kept pressing cost but we are not a mechanic. We are a DISTRIBUTOR. The costs you're familiar with don't apply to us.

That is on the assumption that your engine needs only a crankshaft and oil pump. That is why I said extent of damage is also a factor.
And we tore down the whole motor before we listed what needed changing. Actually have a video but can't figure out how to post here. Plus I'm mad he put parts on the floor instead of the work bench when assembling so I told him to do it better and make new video

Fake parts will last more than 6months (not saying your parts are fake) But a mildly used engine is this case will not even require a warranty.
The engine is the warranty it's self straight from manufacturer, and yeah I've been doing it on this platform and no threads yet on a failed engine after over 5years.

If the car can come in @ 106,000 miles and engine dies @ 250,000miles after 7years then a 106,000miles replacement engine will have a natural 7year warranty and over 150,000miles to go.

And yes we give over 1year warranty on replaced engines only if you service with us, using the right oils.
We don't force people to use our services to get our warranty. If we did a good job, as long as they don't abuse their car, their warranty is good. We have no caveats. There is no consistent source of low mileage engines in the country we trust. Can we bring some in? Yes, but again, it's not worth it for the customer

Not dark ma'am, deep. grin cheesy. Deep doesn't make it dark ma.

That's by the way. Do you guys have access to car parts of European vehicles or you do strictly American. If you can get me some engine parts for one Peugeot like that, I can name my next baby Radu. You'll save me the stress of importing from Europe.

I will shoot you a mail with details.
Peugeot is one brand we have zero experience with because they are not in USA.

I may not like gazzuzz attitude but I rather take my car to his workshop for engine replacement thank use 100k as labor for a rebuild.
Which is fair enough. At the end of the day, it's your choice. We just put our faith in our product not other people's plain and simple.

We understand the labor concept will be hard because it's not what you're used to but it takes 20.2 hours for the crankshaft on that car and 14.6 for the engine replacement. That's why the labor is what it is. If you notice, that's just a 30k difference in labor.

If he wants to work at a labor rate of N2,500 per hour, more power to him. Our labor rate is N5,000 and it's dirt cheap for what we do.

Like I said, we are 100% transparent.

notice also that the crankshaft is an A level skill while the engine replace is a B level skill.. we really should charge more for labor but don't.
