INEC May Cancel Election In Violence Affected Areas

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Nigeria (INEC) has warned that it may have no other option but to cancel results in some areas where the state returning officer recorded violence.

The spokesman for the INEC chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu, said the commission had recorded reports of electoral violence in some places and would deal with it appropriately.

“We have received reports of incidents of Security breaches in some areas, particularly in Rivers State, but security agents have been on top of their game and we have been able to also conduct elections in those hot spots.

“There are areas where you have incidents of violence. Generally speaking, the election went on across the country.

“There are report of breaches of the peace in Abia State. There are challenges to the peace in many of the areas,” Mr Idowu said, confirming reports of violence in some areas.

He, however, said that reports received by the commission also showed that elections had gone on quite well in all the states.

Returning Officer To Decide

Reports of violence in Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers State, have led to calls for cancelation of election results in some of the places where violence was recorded. But Mr Idowu said that the Returning Officer reserved the right to decide if the elections in the areas would be canceled.

“There are guidelines and rules that the commission applies for dealing with cases where you have unwarranted infringement on the process, like ballot box snatches and stuffs like that.

“The Returning Officer is empowered to take a decision on what to do with areas where there have been violation of the process, like snatching of the ballot box or card readers.

“If the Returning Officer considers it serious enough, he can cancel or void the elections in such areas. The decision resides with the Returning Officer.

“If you have elections voided in any area, you will have to look at the balance when the result in other areas are collated. The difference between the leading candidate and the runner-up, if the outstanding votes are added to the runner up and it makes a difference to who leads, then that is significant.

“If the addition does not make a difference then you cannot say it is significant,” Mr Idowu explained.

He, however, said that there were no reports sent to the INEC that showed there was an entire area where election did not go on.

Wike must be paralysed with panic right now to see his strategies gradually being ripped apart, you can imagine how confident he was in his plans by his infamous diatribe on live TV. Those thugs should be treated like the killers that they are, these are the same elements that will be abandoned by the politicians after the polls to terrorize us with wanton acts of armed robbery, kidnapping and militancy. I expect to hear of more raids and arrests before the polls are opened, parade don change gear.

Parade has truly changed gear.

Things are changing, there's no more latitude for impunity in our land. The strategy in the redeployment pattern is quite evidently to euthanize any plans by Mbu or any corrupt security agents to interfere with the elections using their already established structures, strategies, and influence. The deployment of 32 fresh batches of MOPOL and 6 crack teams of detectives to Rivers state, among other special units, is an unveiled measure to contain the electoral violence already being perpetrated in the State. With the discovery of MASSOB's bomb factory yesterday, it is also not surprising to see a shake up in the security framework of some states in the region.

I must give Kudos to the IGP, the citizens of RS will definitely feel safer, especially in knowing that their brothers will no longer be murdered and their mothers will no longer be tear-gassed into submission, for exercising their civic duties.

Yero has failed Kaduna and has nothing more to offer, so this is not surprising. The state’s budget profile does not display a development orientation. For instance, the state’s capital to recurrent ratio has declined from 77%:23% to 55%:45%, reflecting a preference to spend for the pleasure and comfort of the ruling clique.

The era of wanton corruption and reckless impunity is dead and buried with the PDP. Nigeria has CHANGED.

I remember when a thread was opened on NL late last year, asking where the northern support for Buhari was since the noise seemed to only be coming from the SW. My answer was short and simple: the silence is strategic. We knew Buhari and northern presidency was a delicate issue considering his antecedents and our past dominance. We knew how our vocal and dogged support as a result of pure unbridled love for him could be misconstrued for a 'born to rule' mentality which could have adversely affected his campaign and acceptability in the south. The result of that strategy is what we are celebrating today, and this strategic silence is what Eziachi was advocating, and misunderstood by Montaque.

It is therefore glaringly obvious that until Igbos embrace the concept of stooping to conquer, they will forever grope in the wilderness of political irrelevance and servitude. Mark my words.

A few minutes ago Nigeria’s president-elect Muhammadu Buhari declared that stealing is corruption.

In a press statement the former General said he will make all necessary arrangements to update all state documents and educational textbooks to that effect.

Buhari said, “from now on let all be notified that stealing shall be corruption and likewise acts of corruption shall be regarded and dealt with as stealing. Let there be no ambiguity.”

The General further stated that this important new legislation will be applied retroactively due to the critial needs of the broke nation

Did anyone else notice this? This has made my day. I knew all those effusive statements by President Buhari about not investigating Jonathan and his cronies was just a gesture to keep the peace, and carefully worded to avoid contradiction with another statement he made about ensuring anti-graft agencies like the ICPC are made completely and fully autonomous, with a tenured appointment to boot.

What that statement is simply saying is - I will not personally pursue or investigate past government criminals, but I will empower, equip, facilitate, and ensure that the agencies responsible for that will pursue and track them down with no mercy because we are very, very broke right now.

So no, he is no Mandela. President Buhari is a wise and intelligent man. The party is over.
