bluebay:The only function of what is known as government is to: Organise Society. Organization means the aggregation of resources and the effective deployment to further the people and their interests. The function of government is thus to move resources from the point of generation or the point of abundance to the point of consumption or the point o relative scarcity. If it cannot perform these functions then government is useless to the citizens of any country. Though the people bear responsibility for appointing leaders and the installing governments, the government bears direct responsibility for the condition of the people aka the standard of living and the quality of life. |
United is so hopeless this season. Just two points above Westham in 17th place. Guess what. If the season were some half a dozen matches longer they will be bang in the middle of a relegation scrap. |
Hemanwel:Well he is the ranking 'Christian' in government. But I always say, the Nigerian system is fashioned to uphold the undesirable as standard practice. Leadership remains the aggregate of our collective values. |
israelmao:You cannot lose money on Italian classics if you keep them in good condition. They age like fine wine. Some people actually buy them to store value particularly if they have a story. |
But it is sustainable for us, the general public. Leadership comes from behind in these parts. Living by example is alien. That is why it is so easy to predict the future of this country, it's economy and in doing so make a financial killing. |
Now with Manchester United as the only serious suitor do they press the ball out of possession, do they have the dynamic wingers Galatasaray or Napoli had or a midfield that can switch defense into attack quick enough to create room for his trademark run at goal..... I think Osimen should not be in a haste until United's full recruitment and upgrade plans are known and he has an idea of his potential teammates and study them well on tape before signing anything. |
The long term solution will be to offer local refiners oil blocks in the drive to make them independent from OPEC and the international oil market. |
We are supposed to be practicing democracy in this country so why can't you extend that to this forum by introducing a dislike button that automatically deletes a post after a certain number of hits and automatically closes the account of a user after a certain number of deleted posts. That is fair and doable. |
Agbegbaorogboye:If the Director of the FBI or Homeland security in the US was a white supremacist and for example the KKK went wild in Alabama, mowing down black folks, you think the black Chief of Police in that State or County will bat an eyelid in sending SWAT to neutralize them. I think the first thing we need to get right is the knowledge that brings liberty. We live in a deeply feudal society and this culture is sending us to hell in a handbag. No one citizen is more important than another and most of all those who find themselves in office are placed there by a wide variety of people to serve them and not themselves so their personal opinions and dispositions count for little in a working democracy. And finally the concept of government is highly over infkated in these parts and grossly misunderstood. Here you hear things like, 'after God is government'. Well, this has been the mental chain holding us down as a people for my understanding of government is simple. Just a selected few from and to serve the many. There just to organize society, that is all. |
Angelfrost:I just don't get it. The NPF has training schools that can assist States in manpower development. The States and Counties then equip and arm them and they are then made to swear to serve in accordance with the law, that is all. What is so hard in that. The Federal police can then focus on Federal crimes, cross boarder crimes and organized crimes. Then they will not need that many personnel in their rank and file but the number they have they will be better able to kit and train to a far higher level in modern, cutting edge technology. That is more laboratories and less Ak47's, more brains than boots. These colonial era structures, thinking and methodologies we presently operate are outdated and have fallen far, far behind present day insecurity and criminality. |
Dennisochampa:Na so. There is always someone behind the misery of the African. He cannot live a decent, independent and prosperous life. When he cannot think out his solutions the blame must go to a phantom. Why not just control your own security to remove the influence of 'certain politicians'. If by law I could employ, train and arm the security man guarding my premises, will he ever be under external influences... This is the country where the people are just too docile and to languid to experience anything but misery. In other societies by now the people will have armed themselves and discarded any semblance of government controlled security. People will continue to die in large numbers until the Federal government relinquishes it's exclusive right to policing. There is no phantom anywhere. |
Angelfrost:Exactly. We have been harping on the fact that the Federal government lacks the capacity to solely run several aspects of governance of which security is the most pertinent at the moment. |
'It is impossible to post security to every hamlet...' he said. Is that not why the exclusive rights to security by the Federal government should be ended and State and Local government police established to fill these gaps and bring security to the doorsteps of the people....? When politicians in other climes address the issue of security you hear promises like increasing the number of beat cops, decreasing the response time to distress calls to the standard 3 minutes in urban areas and ten minutes in rural areas, that is governance by data and metrics. Here the basic structure of effective policing is not even in existence, people are wasting away in record numbers due to violent crime and yet leadership goes about their business without a care or a fear of accountability. Just terrible. |
This does not look like a meeting but a conference. You meet around a table where positions are placed, ideas are shared with expert backing and notes are taken. This looks more like the setting for a one way dialogue where the ideas of one, at most two are preaches while the gathering listens. At the end of the day the solution to most difficult challenges in life come from an abundance of minds. |
The easiest way to lose your dignity, your respect and your Name is to dip your feet in the murky waters of partisan politics. Even on this forum some started out well many years ago but have since had their reputations flushed down the toilet. |
HacheNoire:No one is blaming China for growing into what it is today but no one should equally blame any country for taking proactive steps to defend it's economic independence. After all China retaliated against the US with matching tariffs. I still want to ask you where you expect all the countries that buy China at the expense of their economies to continue to find the resources since you guys are not buying from them in equal measure. Nigeria for one cannot sustain it perpetually. At some point we will have to cut back and do some stuff for ourselves or drown in debt. |
SIRTee15:That is Mr. Okoli the yam farmer argument. Yes no one should produce everything. But no one should be jobless and broke such that he has to borrow for everything. Now tell me who produces 'everything' and who is broke and borrows between China, Nigeria and perhaps the USA. That is the cause of this whole wahala. PS. The US did not want China 'rich' as you say, they just wanted them out of Communism/socialism and US trade has been an age long agent of capitalism and by extension democracy as they hoped. |
SIRTee15:Absolutely. I don't understand what the hailing of China benefits a Nigerian living in present day Nigeria. Yes, the temporary benefit of cheap goods and cheap loans but what are the long term effects, the erosion of your economic independence. The long term economics is simple. If you cannot do stuff for yourself you simply cannot tackle poverty and you certainly will not develop. They say China has great infrastructure. But without the prospects of industry how will you pay for the infrastructure and how will you maintain them when your tax income is minuscule.....or I get it.... loans from... guess who....the likes of China, the people who are actually working. It is a bad vicious cycle. |
justmondris:Exactly the argument I have been trying to put forward. How many people can afford. This is the vicious cycle of import induced poverty that is gripping not only Nigeria but many other countries. It starts by someone else abroad making stuff you need at a price a bit cheaper. As you buy more of that stuff and ignore the more expensive substitutes you have locally you save money front end but lose money at the back end called earnings from industry and jobs. The more the economy contracts the greater your appetite for cheaper and cheaper and cheaper stuff but now the gap between the price at which you can make stuff and the cost of importing the same stuff becomes so huge that you are hooked perpetually. That is what has happened to the US. It doesn't happen overnight. When governments are not vigilant and mismanage their economies, economic slavery is unavoidable. The best Trump can do is alert the American people that economic slavery to China is at hand. He may not win the tariff war but the signals are clear to every economically sleepy citizen. Wither Nigeria. |
HacheNoire:This argument should come from a Chinese citizen. If you are not I cannot see what benefit you gain from losing control of your economic destiny to another nation. I can admire China for all the strides they have made and blame this country for not becoming like them but when I tell you that China is undermining the economies of a good number of countries then you better believe it. And for a country like Nigeria (where I live) that is grapling with austerity and a failing extractive industry based economy the signs are not good. If larger economies with huge indigenous industries around the world have been gutted where is Nigeria going to find jobs for the millions of her citizens going forward. I repeat again. AS AN EXAMPLE. America or Europe had never made textiles indigenous to Africa to export to Africa but China is doing that, why? |
HacheNoire:Oga, this is not an American problem alone. It is a global problem. China is even undercutting the French wine industry, the Italian leather industry, the German machine tools industry. Heck, they are making Ankara. at a scale no Nigerian industry can compete with even if the entire national budget is sunk into it. Yes, they have huge monetary reserves, cheap labour and political clout but they are also actively targetting specific industries for global dominance without a care for local effects. This has never happened in the history of international commerce and industry. |
Wimkeh: Like Mr. Okoli the farmer who takes his load of yams to market every harvest but will not even hazard a glance at those selling hoes, cutlasses, fertilizer or even pesticides claiming he makes all he needs by himself. One by one the shops in the market closed down because everyone caught the drift and went into yam farming too. |
Jaylord12:You have no purchasing power because you have no industries. And you have no industries because you cannot compete with cheaper imports. From textiles to agro processing, even the industries once domiciled and recognized as indigenous to Nigeria have somehow found their way to the far east. And until we can found a government that is pro Nigeria and completely sold out to the development of this country, that is patriotic IN DEED it is better to keep China at arms length to avoid total and absolute slavery. For if they could undermine and corrode American and European economies over the last half century, ours will be like shooting ducks in a barrel, a walk in the park for them. |
So Nigeria is the next dumping ground. Abeg we cannot prosper China at our own expense and standards of living. Our currency is already battered enough because we don't make what we need thoughtless of exporting enough. So more imports is the last thing we need. We are on the same boat with the United States on this matter. Cheaper imports means crushing local industries, more joblessness and increasing poverty and then the vicious cycle of cheap imports to soothe our psyche. We need work to afford proper stuff not loans to buy cheap imports. China should carry it's wahala elsewhere. They are ruining the economies of several countries by undercutting their ability to fend for themselves by industrial capacity. |
bixton:Just for the records. Time and circumstances should not erode or discolour principles if not it is a pointless mission presenting them. The fact that politicians worldwide roll back on their principles and lie unashamedly and repeatedly is the reason why they are close to the bottom of the desirables and 'respectables' in almost every society except ours. If you tell me one thing and leave me to imagine the circumstances under which your vow will fail then I rather not take your word for any worth in the first place. That you then willingly entrust your future prosperity and peace to such people is the real tragedy. |
Same ol, same ol. A country that cannot solve its basic problems, a nation of ostriches. |
Ekaka14:Government has no business in business. No one can convince me otherwise. If anyone told me that lightning will strike twice on the third of the big three privatised industrial services sector, I will have doubted. After the total collapse of NITEL/MTEL at the instance of competition from the likes of MTN and co. Dangote seems to be railroading NNPC and it's phantom refineries, the tail apparently waging the dog. |
MotiveU:That is why airports should either be privatized or commercially run public enterprises to foster competition. No high throughput business will afford a complete shut down for hours not to talk of days or weeks. They either create redundancies, get creative with running repairs or be on top of the preventive maintenance game. That is belongs to government means a reroute to another 'franchise' which may be hundreds of kilometres away without regards for the convenience or economics on their customers. Government almost everywhere in the world are absolutely teriible at business. |
It is standard practice for a raiding party to have an over watch detail when they enter a premises to prevent this very kind of ambush. Just as it is common sense when digging a pit to have someone on the ledge. |
Whoever has the better defence and composed goalie will win that day. Tournaments are always about the better backline. |
Another day, more corpses.... and more and many more until the people are fed up and take law and justice INTO THEIR HANDS. |
