Lantosed: 1 000,000 like for this. The real economy driver largely depends on SMEs of that country in view. That is the reason why you see countries like Japan developed because they develop their SMEs and NOT Religion. Jesus has already said that they people will make machandise of the gospel. The country stands to gain next to nothing on economic terms if she focuses on faith. Are churches responsible for developing SMEs? Religion in Nigeria is thriving because government deliberately made the people poor in order to keep them away from challenging those who wield political power. We have this mess today because the Nigerian state has failed to provide the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. I wonder why some people are even of the opinion that taxes from religious bodies is the answer to our developmental problem. This in my opinion is ridiculous. It's good to tax these bodies, but the question is how well are the taxes collected so far ushered in the needed development in the country? Making it appear as if churches are the manufacturers of the development challenge in the country is so wrong.... seguntijan: "I could not resist talking about this, early today. The number of registered churches in Nigeria is 23,216 according to the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria. Note that these churches have branches. There may be over 2,000,000 documented church branches in Nigeria. Add to this, all the Mosques and undocumented religious houses all over Nigeria, we may be talking of 5,000,000. It calls for concern. Our major business in Nigeria presently is religion or faith marketing. Yet this business is tax free and enjoy free entry. Juxtapose this with the production base in Nigeria, you will see why we are a poor nation with all forms of recession. Last year there are just slightly about 1000 manufacturing companies still hanging out there in Nigeria. Many of them are even threatening closure. Some of the old factory premises have been converted to churches and Mosques. It is sad. These companies who produce what we eat and use in this country pay tax and go through harrowing experience to do business. They cannot afford the limousines, luxury homes and private planes these faith leaders use, yet they are the ones that pay tax which we use to build roads that these faith preachers travel. We have got many things wrong in this country. Faith without work and expecting miracles is definitely a mirage. Time to have a personal relationship with God and focus on productive work. I am a Christian and a believer but I find it difficult to accept what is going on. The starting point is to bring all churches, mosques and religious houses to the tax bracket, tax religious organizations as we tax our companies. Give them tax deductions/benefits where they spend on charity as applied to businesses Nigeria. According to one of my Wards whom I am proud to have mentored "Nigeria would have been such a great country to live in if the passion with which churches are created is the same way enterprises are established and industries developed by individuals. With this, meaningful and gainful employment would have become a thing of the past. In a sharp departure from what I was thought in my home when I was growing up, I suddenly realized that nobody talks about industry and hard work anymore in Nigeria but miracle. It is so painful that the teachings of hard work, honesty and industry have been replaced with the teachings of prosperity via a divine means in my dear country. Professor Alan Rugman, of blessed memory, thought me at Henley Business School that key factors of economic growth in any country are the presence of viable industries and strong competition within the industries. We must all imbibe the spirit of hard work, industry, patriotism and honesty for us to grow as a nation" That is the view of one of the 24 young and promising Business Managers that I mentor. It is a food for thought as we start the new year." Sound analysis, keep it up... However, miracle preachers are becoming more and more attractive because of the level of poverty in the land. Miracles only thrive where things are not working. If there are no anomalies, miracle preaching will die a natural death. Its like a poor man going to a preacher to examine his life, the only expectation of the poor man at that point is for the preacher to tell him that something is wrong with him, or somebody somewhere is manipulating him. From this point, providing a solution becomes inevitable. Guess who holds the solution, it is the preacher. This is exactly why miracles are selling like gold presently in the country. If government is able to fight poverty to a standstill, people will no longer be interested in miracles because everyone would have been occupied by then.... |

TheFreeOne: I have nothing against government taxing religious organizations and neither am I a pastor nor one of those gullible religious followers.
My concerns are for those who placed their trusts in fake religious leaders whose major interests are the extravagant life styles and positions attached to their offices.
However it is dangerous for a secular society like ours to allow either by commission or omission her laws to be stylishly and deceptively aligned majorly to Islamic religion/agenda either sharia, paedophilia, symbols, Kaduna state religious law e.t.c
And I hope you are also aware the sultan of sokoto kicked against gender equality bill but quick to support grazing bill and any other that'll push their agenda. So when some southerners think they are intelligent by supporting certain decisions of government they failed to realise they are mostly foolish by not realising the underbelly moves of certain decisions/actions which are inimical to southern Nigeria.
All I am interested in is a fair and just Nigeria for all and if that is not possible then will it not be sensible to explore true federalism / regionalism or allow those who are willing to opt out of this contraption to do the needful
But I hope christian leaders will get their acts together for a common cause devoid of selfishness. Exactly my point. National laws should not be skewed to favour certain groups. While others are quick to obey national laws, others select the ones to obey. This is a challenge on the sovereignty of Nigeria. It is only fair play that can save this country from the imminent collapse |

My submission does not mean what you're asking... my concern is while others are obedient to national laws, others are trying really hard not to as a result of their beliefs. Such is a challenge on the sovereignty of Nigeria if not properly checked. Mind you, the issue was challenged in court. The outcome was accepted by all despite their discomforts. People can argue that they were called by God according to his word, therefore should not be asked to step aside from leading their flock given to them by God. I hope you understand my angle.... |

I try as much as possible to restrain myself from playing the religious or ethnic card, but events of the past few days calls for concern.
If christian leaders are made to submit to the laws of Nigeria as a sovereign nation, how come a good number of Muslims in Nigeria are against the gender equality bill and its provisions? The reason I'm familiar with is that it is against Islam therefore cannot be observed by Muslim faithful. The sultan vehemently spoke against it, and that Muslims will never submit to such law because it is against their believe. This to say the least is an assault on the sovereignty of Nigeria and her capacity to enact laws in order to safeguard the rights of all Nigerians.
I honestly think christians are conceding too much, so do the traditionalists. If these our so called men of God have not been greedy in their disposition, perhaps this double standards would not occur.
National laws should not be made to target certain groups. Finally, the sovereignty of Nigeria is absolute and comprehensive. Therefore, all who are bound by the territory Nigeria, is expected to submit to and respect the laws of the country, whether they are against our believes, as long as they serve and promote the greater good.
Enough of religion induced laws. Religion is suppose to be a private affair, therefore should not be promoted by the state |

SmartyPants: Madam what is guriela??
Having a flag and a base (especially when that so-called base can be shifted within hours) makes no difference. guerrilla warfare is small scale, hit and run, ambush-style attacks. Is that what boko haram are doing? yes. period.
Also, guerrilla is not always the opposite of conventional. And who says guerrilla warfare is uncoordinated?
Please just stop...stop! Like you said, the boko fight cannot be said to be conventional especially when their fighters can easily sink themselves into civilian society without anybody knowing. They can be here today, and there tomorrow. They have members in the military, in the police, among the political circles, even civilians who go about their normal businesses in the market. All these groups are often mobilised even without a formal training to cause damage at any given time. These are people who live with ordinary Nigerians like everyday law obedient people. Conventional warfare is not fought like that. Boko haram is not only fighting the government but also civilians, and the methods they employ are not known to conventional warfare. In a conventional warfare, there are rules of engagement which guides the operations of the warring parties but in this case, there are none, at least not on both sides. It is these rules that are used to determine if a warring party has committed war crimes in line with global practice. Boko haram having an operational base is not enough to say the war is conventional. Whether the war is conventional or not lies in the operational methods of the warring parties. |

I guess he was obsessed with the power of incumbency and what it can do as far as the Nigerian polity is concerned. It is almost two years after the elections, Reno should wake up to the reality that no matter what happens now, his boss is not coming back, focus should be on how the current government can improve the lives of Nigerians and not these litany of comparisons whether Jonathan was a better leader. At the end of the day, the good things Jonathan did was for Nigeria, and not for one individual or party to praise him. His contribution is acknowledged by all who are familiar with his policies. Like I said before, Jonathan is a Nigerian and he did the little he could for Nigeria. His time is gone and now is the time for others to contribute their lot. Reno, take note |

If the idea of keeping one's virginity till one gets married should ever be taken seriously, then it should also be emphasized in the camp of males too, and not just in the camp of females.
If anyone demands that his wife-to-be remains a virgin till they get married, a notion I find inherently silly, and a mere product of ideological indoctrination and sheepish conformity, he too has to be a virgin, and remain one till he gets married.
