shaybebaby: That would be their problem and those who look to perpetuate that impression.
It is very sad if one choose to live by taking into account people's impression of them. If your wages do not stretch to purchase a car, do not get one. You can get by using public transport, lots of people do.. Even the rich.
Why won't people get into debt when they insist on buying things they do not need, with money they do not have to impress people they do not like (stole that line from somewhere, can't remember who said it, but it's true).
I haven't been to naij in four years, not because I can't afford to but because I cannot afford the opportunity cost.
Two grand will get me there and back including spending money for two weeks, no? But I chose to spend that money on my garden which increases the value of my home.
It's all about priorities my good brother. Well said sister! Living to impress the others is a trap. Warren Buffett is one of the richest men in the world and still living in the house he bought decades ago (not a mansion!) There's no shame in living with a flatmate or living frugal. |

Opentokwowledge: Nope, women don't ALWAYS do the pounding in those days. Sometimes, the women do the cooking while the men go on with pounding. When I was still very young, I usually go visiting my grandpa on his farm during holidays and I will open a window to what it was like then. It was a large farm situated in the outskirts of the main town where the real houses were. Different families have their farmlands apportioned out and the number of workers working could be as many as possible depending on the financial capacity of the farmer to hire labourers or his readiness to cooperate with other farmers so they can help each other out on the farm, Ours was the former system but my grandparents were not the type that will sit back and watch while the labourers do their job, so we usually joined in on the farm work, set traps for bush meat and in the evenings, bring back yam and the bush meat to the farmstead. We the boys would roast the meat, the men do the pounding while the clearly fagged out women do the cooking. On other days that the women don't go with us to work the farm though, they're expected to have prepared the sumptuous pounded yam and egusi soup to match before we arrive at the stead. Division of Labor was the order of the day then, not slavery or any synonym of it in any form. This is very cool and gives a good glimpse of African rural life. Sounds like a good and wholesome life. |

Baaballiyo: The Scandinavians of the old love to plunder, that was their only motive. So I don't think the Fulani fitted that comparison. I'm talking about the modern culture, not 1000 years ago. Scandinavians don't show off wealth. They generally live below their means, or at lest don't spend money on stupid luxuries and baubles. They spend the money on things they love. An outdoor lover will spend 2000 Euros on mountain climbing gear, but use the same phone until it dies of old age. |

You people are so quick to pass judgement. OMG the horrible comments I see here! There are many possibilities:
1) Fake news. How reputable is the news source? The whole story doesn't make any sense 2) The woman had an affair with the guy and when the gossip mills started running, she had to accuse the guy with rape to avoid cheating scandal 3) She could be mentally ill or mentally challenged 4) She could be traumatized by the rape and saying yes to everything at the court cause she can't think straight
The report is questionable and pretty subpar, looks like fake news written for clickbait to me. No one enjoys rape. Posting crap like this encourages rapists. |

Follygunners: I can concur to this... My ex-gf has a Finnish-Danish ancestral background and her grandpa was actually born in Finland. He told me of the hardship he endured growing up. He even told me how they had to cut a big chunk of ice off a frozen lake or river just to preserve their foods cuz they can't afford refrigerator et al.. All they did was simply improvise their way thru life on a daily basis. There used to be a time where there were starvation deaths every year. People still remember the poverty from the previous generation, so they live a humble lifestyle. It's a shameful act to show off any wealth. You can see how poor they were in classic paintings and old photos, they are full of starved peasants with ragged, tattered clothes and sad faces. You heard the first hand account from the guy that lived it. Here is a very good study of the impoverished past of Finland and how they got out of it and developed: https://jyx.jyu.fi/dspace/bitstream/handle/123456789/49598/978-951-39-6627-0_vaitos13052016.pdf?sequence=1Finland was once really, really poor and full of superstition. There is the folklore legend of supernatural evil spirits that live in the wilderness. They don't step into cultivated land. Even the atheist types won't go to the forests at night. There are no predators, no deadly snakes, nothing that can hurt you, but if it's dark, people will not step in there even with super bright flashlights. They will go anywhere in the city/civilized land in absolute pitch dark, but not into the bush. Even though the bush is safer than the city. I'm inclined to think it's the shadow of old superstitions. |

Don't mind them jare, they are selfish. my guy, try as much as possible to go there and pack your own money on the streets too ( you might be lucky to get employed at McDonald or Wal-Mart) just don't go there with the mentality that you're going to hammer in your first 3 years ooo cos that will lead you to illegal activities and we already have enough bad image there. .. trash talk. Yes there are thousands who have spent 30 yrs there , most of them can't come home because of the shame and backlash they will receive in Nigeria ( how will you feel to work for 30 yrs and have nothing tangible to show for it except maybe your house in Nigeria) . most of them are on 30yr mortgage plan and they are hoping to atleast pay everything off and sell it and use the proceeds to come retire in naija. Do not blame until you find yourself in their shoes. This happened to a lot of Middle Eastern immigrants I know. They couldn't go home for years cause of shame. They told fake stories and fabricated excuses to their folks at home, cause people expect the riches and high life and they have nothing to show for. It's not only Nigerians, not only Africans, this kind of thing happens to a lot of immigrants who went to richer countries. If they aren't doctors or engineers, they can hardly even afford the ticket to fly home, if they can afford it at all. |

Petrol is a bit pricey here as well, about £1.10 a litre. Then there is road tax, insurance and MOT to factor in. (sigh).
You are in Finland, woohoo! My Christmas is set.. Lapland.. Here I come!
Do you like it? I was actually dreaming about moving there just to access their education system for my little man. But the thought of learning a new language put me off. Non-resident price for the monthly city transport card is more than twice the resident price. It hurt to pay that until I got my ID card! One way bus fare is 5 Euros for non-residents, 1.5 for residents. I want to go to Lapland in winter, let's go next Feb! Christmas is bad timing for Lapland, the best northern lights views are in Jan-Feb. |

Follygunners: The problem with African pple is that we're too shallow and mediocre in our thinking. Most 9ja pple residing abroad (Western world / developed nations) come back home to live a premium lifestyle they can hardly afford.
You see them devour a 12-mth saving within a matter of a 2-week vacation in 9ja. Just imagine! They live beyond their means in other to live/measure-up to the "just-arrived" hype. No be by force. They come to 9ja and can no longer take danfo or BRT as a means of transport... like the innocent 9ja folks using it are 2nd-class citizens. They can no longer go to bed without 24/7 A/C.
They come back home to 9ja and can't go back to that wretched 'face-me-I-face-you' abode they once lived in (where their parents and families still live). They move around with an entourage... a personal driver, 'vampire' friends/relatives et al... they can't deal with the shame of seeing their fellow friends that never left 9ja doing great... so they feel the need to at least match-up.
They give the folks back home in 9ja a delusional impression of an imaginary luxury life they live abroad... who now in turn, expect so much from them. Of course, they got to live up to the hype.
Above all.... majority of the culprits are those doing menial/odd jobs living on meager incomes. They're usually like that.. the poorer they are, the dumber they behave. It's called "Poverty Mentality" !
After all is said and done, they go back with huge debt and bills awaiting them... ( I trust 'dem dem' for there) That's not specific to Nigerians, most of it is true for all work migrants who go from poorer countries to richer ones. Polish people working in the UK - same for them going back to the village in Poland, or the Turks who went to Germany, same thing all around. It's called saving face. Nobody wants to lose face. Vampire friends and relatives is the exact same for them too. |

shaybebaby: So I have been told, a friend of mine lives in Bermuda and told me his monthly phone contract is like $120. I was shocked to the marrow.
But on the other hand, we pay (UK) quite a lot for public transport, probably the highest in Europe. I can fly to Europe for around the same price to commute from where I live to work. Both my broadband wifi and phone bills in Finland are a quarter of what I used to pay in the States. Public transport is a bit pricey, but it's exorbitant for non-residents. Interstate train fare is high, it makes better sense to drive if it's not just you. |

For £12 a month (bought my phone outright), I get unlimited calls/texts and 4gb of data. Not to shabby I think. European prices are way better than the American prices any day. |

People like him are the reason you get plagued with the skull miners. This kind of behavior encourages people to be greedy and go after get rich quick schemes. Impoverished youths want that kind of wealth but it's not achievable by normal ways like working and starting business ventures. So they go after sick, cannibalistic rituals. I read a news story about a yahoo boy butchering his own grandmother for money rituals. It made me sick. You get ritual murders every day, god knows how many innocent people lose their lives cause of those satanic rituals driven by greed, the kind of greed which is fuelled by disgusting role models like this.
