Martin0:I can understand most of the written Pidgin, if there are words I don't know I look it up from wiktionary. No wahala! |
casualobserver1:I stumbled across here when Googling something (forgot what I was even searching) and the interesting topics on the main page got me read like an addict. Reasons I loved Nairaland and stayed here: - People's humorous attitude and funny comments, also the interesting Nigerian perspective about local and world affairs. - I see the news about Africa we never get to see in the Western media. We see only negative news and violence, peple post all kinds of positive news here. - Culture threads are hella interesting, it's refreshing to learn about all those fascinating rich cultures and traditions. - Fights never escalate to ugliness I see on facebook and western forums. Even if people fight, it gets resolved quickly, mods never have to lock threads. - You people don't ban the trolls, you just turn them into some kind of resident joke. No one takes the trolls serious and just make them into funny fools. Something white people never learned. - The banter between feminists and macho men is hilarious - I am writing an epic fantasy series, and the tribal conflict stuff is a huge source of inspiration for me. I have only academic knowledge on tribal cultures, it's priceless to see the living tribal culture with real people writing comments, the complex structure and political issues will inspire stories. - There are so many nice and positive people here! |
It's funny how the definition of black varies from one place to another. In America, when they had the despicable racist segregation era and Jim Crow laws, there was this "one drop rule" where you were considered black if you had one drop of black blood. Even if you were mostly white with 1/8 black ancestry, you were considered black. This is still the case, people who hardly look African identify as black (lok at Halle Berry for example.) But mixed race people are classified as colored in South Africa. My West African friends called them half-cast. Somalis and Ethiopians are distinct ethnicities, educated non-Africans know the Horn people are separate ethnicities from subsaharan Africans. Learned non-black people also know Khoisan people of South Africa aren't exactly black, either, but a separate race. Just like the Asians: Chinese, Japanese, Koreans are different from Southeast Asians like Thai, Filipino, Laotian etc. They are all called "Asian" but separate ethnicities. Mongolian is nothing like Japanese so one has to be ignorant to see the Somalis and Ethipioans the same as black African. An albino Ethiopian can't be distinguished from albino Europeans. When you learn enough, you see the black Africans have different ethnicities and phenotypes. Fulani people look different from the other blacks, they look nothing like the typical subsaharan Africans we see around. I think westerners also know south Sudanese people are different from the other black Africans, with their extreme melanin and extraordinary tall physique. |
Nigeriadondie1:Greenland is a frozen desert wasteland where sun doesn't rise for months. The suicides are happening cause the native Greenlanders (who are related to the Inuit) are treated like garbage, their culture and way of life destroyed by the commercial fishing industry and their rural settlements are left to their own devices with no healthcare, transportation and education services. They can't get mental care cause there are no psychiatrists who speak their language. Their youth suicide epidemic is the same kind plaguing the Native American Lakota tribes in the USA. |
kcjazzy:I'm doing some research on the Fulani, a lot of them display North African features, caucasian nose and forehead. Some of them resemble Tuaregs. |
malware:What ethnic group is it? |
casualobserver1:I left for Europe. Glad I'm not living in the horribly polarized society now, things got bad since Trump's election. |
winj3:Why do you people hating on the Igbos all the time, Nnedi Okarofor is also Igbo, she won a Hugo award and gave a good name to the Nigerians. Besides the people in foreign countries only see Nigerian or African, they have no idea about tribes. |
cve90:Many probably die young cause of skin cancer. Unless they have the money to afford lifetime supply of sunblock. |
oxygenlove:LMAO ![]() Power of Nairaland: I'm a white foreigner from Finland, never been to Nigeria and knew next to nothing about Nigeria before I discovered Nairaland and I'm laughing at this remark after spending a few days of surfing here. If you marry an urban Fulani lady, your offspring won't be herdsmen. Find one from Lagos! |
Lizards are harmless, they won't attract snakes. Rats and mice attract snakes. Lizards eat pests like mosquitoes. It's a bad idea to feed the pigeons, you feed them at city squares and parks, nowhere near home. They will shit everywhere! Mongoose kill and eat the snakes. Indians were feeding them in their garden to get rid of the cobras. I don't know if the African mongoose are good at killing snakes, you gotta research info about them. |
khiaa:Everybody is Irish on Saint Patty's day! |
walemoney007:It's really bad. They get AIDS, flesh eating bacteria, gangrenes and die from diseases if not from drug overdose. Mentally ill women get raped all the time. If there is a heat wave, they die from heat exhaustion. |
Becoming the side chick of rich men is a disgrace and an extreme lack of self respect. Watch the video and cringe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX_stzHgKxg |
hidhrhis:There is no evidence about albinos being persecuted/butchered in Nigeria. There are interviews with Nigerian albinos complaining about discrimination, but no violence whatsoever. |
Nigeriadondie1: Stallion93:I don't know about Sweden and Norway, but you sure as hell don't want Denmark running the show. They have a real bad track record with their overseas territories: Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world cause Danes royally screwed them over. See this article: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/04/21/474847921/the-arctic-suicides-its-not-the-dark-that-kills-you It's very long, but worth a read to learn how the Danes "develop" places. |
Exactly that's what feminism is about, freedom to choose your own destiny. MissWrite: |
hidhrhis:I thought that ritual albino butchering only happened in Tanzania? Does it happen in Nigeria too? |
Stallion93:No worries, I know enough, I have been to South Africa 10 years ago. I read about the situation in Nigeria here on this forum, but you paint so bleak a picture with no hope at all. How will anything get fixed if pessimistic mentality takes hold? Nigeria is better off than many African countries. Europe used to be a hell hole before the enlightenment. Half of London died from cholera cause they turned Thames into an open sewer. European cities were once filthy and disease ridden. Religion wars bathed the cities in blood, crop failures and starvation regularly decimated the populace. Europe lifted itself out of this misery with the enlightenment movement and industrial revolution. One of Africa's problem is the smart, capable, educated youths running away. You have so many well-educated and smart people here and most of them are abroad. If they see no future and run away, who will fix things? |
According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, there are more than half a million homeless people in the United States today. That is a large number, for sure. But it actually represents a decrease in the homeless population. Between 2007 and 2017, “overall homelessness decreased 14.4 percent,” the group says. Out of the 50 states, 30 recorded decreases in homelessness, while 20 saw increases. Among those 20 states is California, where a rise in homelessness was just described by The Los Angeles Times editorial board as a “national disgrace.” Associated Press photographer Jae C. Hong set out in 2017 to document the plight of people living in Los Angeles’s “Skid Row,” a downtown area with one of the largest homeless populations in the United States. In an AP Images blog, Hong says he was compelled to document life in Skid Row because he was repulsed by it. “Initially, it wasn’t to bring awareness to the plight of the people there or to give voice to the homeless,” he writes. “It was more of a visual curiosity.” Hong goes on to say: “I dialed 911 four times to get help for people. One was a drug addict passed out in the middle of a street intersection on Skid Row. Another was a naked woman in a tree in Santa Ana talking to herself in Spanish. “There’s always an internal struggle. As a photographer, I want to capture the moment because my job is to tell the story. As a human, the agony can be too hard to watch. Some don’t know they need help or that help exists. “I have sympathy for the poor. I don’t judge them now that I’ve seen so many people in dire situations from different circumstances and have heard about their lives. Many times I’ve tried to comfort them with encouraging words.” What Hong shows us through his lens is a collection of people living raw, destitute lives in a place the Los Angeles Times describes as “a Dickensian dystopia in downtown Los Angeles.” There are many people there — some because of economic reasons and some for mental health reasons. But what is certain is that the sight of so many people without a place to live is a heart-rending one, as you can see through Hong’s images here. Go to the source for the shocking photos: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2018/03/02/heartbreaking-scenes-of-homelessness-from-a-national-disgrace/?utm_term=.930c3c902e74 |
Chochovini:German work style is merciless, they work you to near death. Finland is buried and snow and ice 1/3 of the year and you don't see the sun for 2 months in winter. You will wear sweaters and thick coats most of the year. If you are lucky, summer will be sunny and warm, otherwise 10 degrees and rainy everyday with depressing grey sky. |

2. I have not seen an albino obituary before
