Celebrities › Re: Mexico's Carlos Slim Reclaims World's Richest Man Title From Bill Gates by rhames(m): 6:19pm On Jul 25, 2014
AlJarzirah: Carlos Slim Helú is once again the world’s richest person, thanks in large part to a sharp increase in telecom giant América Móvil’s share price both in U.S. and Mexican markets. Slim bumped Microsoft (NYSE:MSFT) cofounder Bill Gates from his perch as the world’s richest, a post Gates has held since May 2013.

The move happened on Tuesday when the value of Slim’s phone company América Móvil’s (NYSE:AMX), his largest holding, rose 1% or $805.6 million, pushing his net worth to Forbes estimate of $79.6 billion, against Gates’s estimated $79.1 billion net worth.

América Móvil’s stock has been rising since the company announced plans last week to divest some assets to comply with Mexico’s new antitrust telecom regulations. América Móvil’s shares were sharply higher last Wednesday, 24 hours after the news of the breakup. The company’s shares, which have languished the past year as a result of regulatory pressures in Mexico, jumped 10% on the NYSE the day following the breakup announcement.

Between July 1 and July 11, Slim’s wealth jumped from $74.5 billion to $79.6, a gain of $5.1 billion in 12 business days, an indication that investors are applauding Slim’s unexpected decision to reduce his phone market share below 50% as a new antitrust telecom law mandate comes into play. Investors seem to believe the outcome may actually be better for Slim’s business interests.

Currently, Slim’s América Móvil controls 70% of the mobile phone market in Mexico, and 80% of landlines.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto signed the bill into law on Monday in an event attended by Mexico’s top telecom executives, including Carlos Slim Domitt, Slims Helús oldest son and heir apparent.

Slim fell from the top of the Forbes World’s Billionaire list in May 2013 largely due to a sharp drop in América Móvil’s stock, fueled by fears that Mexico’s new antitrust regulations would crumble his telecom empire.

Yet it appears as though the threat has reenergized him. Slim is planning to further expand his presence in Europe and Latin America. In a filing with the Mexican Stock Exchange on Monday, América Móvil said it will acquire an additional 23.47 % stake in Telekom Austria in a buyout offer, lifting the telecom giant’s interest in the company to 50.8%.

is there any differenec in their curruiculum? I have viewed it and still the same since the 80's. What we need now is not just equanimity in these qualifications but real emphasis on productivity of these graduates who bag these degrees. Professional bodies such as ICAN, ANAN, COREN and others require graduates with Bsc or HND as minimum qualification before you can write these examinations. I wonder why this simple decision is taking the FG too long to resolve.

emk4lif: ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's intelligence agency said it has been warning shopping complexes in Abuja for two weeks that Islamic extremists might attack them in the capital, where a blast at a mall killed 22 people this week.

The increased security may have prevented even more carnage as witnesses said a security guard stopped a car bomber from entering the mall moments before the massive explosion on Wednesday.

Survivor Donald Chikason told ThisDay newspaper that a security guard argued with the driver of a car who wanted to enter Emab Plaza through the exit gate. When the guard refused, the man bent down and moments later the car exploded, Friday's edition of the newspaper quoted him as saying.

"The man started arguing, behaving as if he was drunk," it quoted him as saying.

Chikason, who works at a bank in the mall, was knocked unconscious by the blast and regained consciousness in the hospital.

The explosion was heard miles (kilometers) away. It set 17 vehicles ablaze and shattered windows throughout the four-story complex.

Body parts lay around the exit gate, other witnesses told The Associated Press. Dozens of wounded survivors were recovering in the hospitals Friday, most suffering burn wounds like Chikason, but at least one victim's leg was amputated, doctors said.

Nigerian intelligence received information that Boko Haram extremists were planning such an attack, said spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar of the Department of State Security.

"About two weeks ago we heard information that they were planning an attack at a busy shopping mall or market ... and so we had to go from one shopping complex to another trying to tell people to be more aware," she told The Associated Press.

Emab Plaza is the biggest and busiest in Abuja, the nation's capital in central Nigeria. The explosion occurred around rush hour as many residents were hurrying to view Nigeria's Super Eagles match against Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil. It was unclear if the bomb was timed to coincide with that, although Boko Haram has bombed several football viewing venues this year, prompting two northeastern states to ban public events to watch the football spectacular.

The state security department did not publish the intelligence about the threat to shopping malls, apparently to avoid a panic. Last week the government warned it had information that Boko Haram planned to hijack petrol tankers in the capital and booby trap them with explosives.

Two separate bombs in Abuja in April killed about 120 people and wounded more than 200 at a busy bus station.

President Goodluck Jonathan returned home Thursday night, cutting short his participation at an African Union summit in Equatorial Guinea.

unuane1: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday said it would not offer automatic tickets to its incumbent National Assembly members in 2015 despite the spate of defections from its fold.

“There will be nothing like automatic tickets for anyone; incumbents and challengers seeking the PDP ticket must go through the normal process to secure it,’’ the PDP Chairman, Zone 3 of Kaduna State, Mr. Joseph Gumbari, told the News Agency of Nigeria.

Recent reports had quoted some federal lawmakers as insisting on automatic tickets for the 2015 race to stop them from joining others that defected to the rival Alliance for Progressives Change (APC).

NAN reports that the ruling PDP has lost five governors, some key leaders and 37 House of Representatives members to the APC in the wave of defections that hit the party.

But Gumbari, a former member of the House of Representatives, told NAN in Jos that conceding to the demand for automatic would “kill the PDP.”

“No one can blackmail the PDP into making such concessions; we shall give the party’s tickets to only those who deserve it. Those who have performed and are still popular should have nothing to fear.

“There are many law makers today that cannot visit their constituencies for fear that they could be attacked by their constituents.

“Such people have abandoned the people and had offered nothing to better their lots. You cannot impose such people on the electorate because that will endanger our chances,’’ he said.

He expressed surprise at the lawmakers’ demand, instead of working to popularise the party.

Gumbari said that PDP’s tickets would only be given to members that had been consistent in shoring up its image and strengthening it through effective representation.

But this slowpoke never complained when the same party is trying to offer the Mr. President an automatic ticket.

Investment › Re: OANDO PLC Stock Price Is At 3 Year High - Time To BUY? by rhames(m): 5:55pm On Jan 05, 2014
yinka2011: Oando stock price is rising sharp. what do you think, is this the time to buy oando stocks?

Dec 27 (Lagos) - Share of Oando Plc closed at a new one year high today of N 19.97 per unit at the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos. The stock hit these levels on almost volume of 6.9 million units which is less than half the volume as its a daily average 90 day volume. OANDO was higher by 5.11% today adding to gains of this week.

The last time this stock saw these levels was on April 12 2012 when it declined from N 21 per unit to N 19 per unit. Shareholders of this company has long suffered and only now they seem to be recovering a little bit. That is specially true for long term investors of this company who have seen their stock continuously decline from N 120 levels in April 2010. The value destruction in this stock over the past 3 years has been huge.

There is a new momentum in this stock backed by the anticipation of the completion of the Connoco Phillips acquisition deal which is expected by the end of January 2014. This deal could create the biggest Nigerian owned oil company that is fully diversified in the oil and gas sector.

There is also optimism from the Oando Marketing subsidiary which has signed a deal with a German bank to provide capital to micro finance banks in the country to lend to low income householders to enable them to buy Oando's N 800 LPG cooking gas cylinder and shift millions of householders away from cooking on kerosene fuel.

There is also big optimism the gas to power sector that OANDO operates in. The company already owns a gas fired power plant in Lagos with a huge pipeline across the state. Company is also completing a huge pipeline in the eastern part of the country. The Oando Energy Resources could emerge a power company in future as there is plenty gas supply in Nigeria that can be used to provide electricity to people of the country. While some argue that cost of gas power is significantly higher compared to traditional sources, it is also a fact that the traditional sources of power have failed to consumers for so long.

While all this seems good for the company, many analysts continue to doubt all the progress that the company is saying that it is making. Maybe the dilution that occurred during the rights issue is playing on the minds of some of those analysts. It may also be the reason different analysts in the country have opposing views of the stock of this company.

Analysts at FBN Capital In Ikoyi have a price target of N 19.80 for OANDO.

Analysts at Vetiva Research in Victoria Island maintain at outperform rating and a price target of N 19.24 per unit for OANDO.

Analyst at Asset and Resource Management Limited (ARM) in Ikoyi have a 'sell' rating on the stock with a price target of N 16.05 per unit for OANDO.

So investors have a lot to consider before the decide to buy into this or watch from the sidelines. It is a decision that has to be made carefully as where this is going is anybody's call.

http://www.easykobo.com/News.aspx?id=4946
Any experienced investor worth his salt will tell you to keep off companies that are heavily indebted. This is the way they pushed this stock to over N100 less than 5 years ago and today it is selling under N20. If i have to buy a stock now on the NSE, it will be Nestle plc. I bought 1100 shares 6 years ago @ N110 and today I am grateful that stock made me a millionaire and have added another 150 to it till date. So beware of this kind of advert. It is misleading.

ak47mann: Princess Adetutu Adesida- Dike, the first daughter of the late traditional ruler of Akureland, Oba Adebiyi Adesida was on Saturday installed as the Regent of the ancient town.

The development came almost a month after the Monarch, who was until his death, the Chairman of the State Council of Obas, passed away in his palace, during a brief illness, at the age of 63.

The traditional installation of the Regent took place at the Palace of the town on late Saturday evening and was carried out by the chiefs.

While speaking with reporters at the palace, the Regent said she would do her best to contribute to the development of the town during the duration of her regency, saying ” I take it up where my father stopped with the help of almighty God”.

On leaving her husband in the United States to take up a traditional position in Nigeria, Adesida-Dike said: “the regency can not disturb my role as a mother and wife and as a career woman, I have also taken leave of absence from my place of work in the United States, my husband knows that I am a Princess before he agreed to marry me and he also knows that anytime my father died as a king, I have to assume this position, so there won’t be any problem.

“I know this is a duty I have to perform, so I have called on my God to help me to succeed in the journey and also that God will help the king makers to choose the right person to be the next king”.

She then called on the state government and the entire people of Akure land to give her their supports in other to succeed in the task.

Adesida-Dike, a United States of America (USA)- based pharmacist will be on the throne until the installation of another Monarch.
this is the second time she became a regent not first.
