GavelSlam: You guys just love creating all kinds of conspiracy theories.
7-UP was a Lebanese ownred company from inception. So what exactly do you mean? It was not Lebanese owned company from inception. It was wholly owned by John Holt Plc and the majority of the shares were sold to the Lebanese in the early 1990s. It was known as Arewa Bottlers then. Its not a conspiracy theory. If you are an ardent investor in our stock exchange you will find out that trend since the past ten years is to take over profitable companies by foreign majority shareholders. Nigerian Bottling company (Coca Cola) was taken over when it was most profitable a few years ago by the Greeks (Leventis Family) and here comes 7UP. |

Anstalk: Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc has received an offer from its majority shareholder, Affelka, a privately-owned Lebanese firm, to buy out the minority shareholders for N19.33 billion ($60 million).
Seven-Up said in a notice to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, yesterday that Affelka has offered to buy all the outstanding and issued shares of Seven-Up that it does not currently own, amounting to 171.5 million ordinary shares at N112.70 per share.
The offer price, according to the company, represents 15 percent premium of N98.00 per share, the last traded price on August 9, 2017, being the last business date the proposal was received from Affelka and 18 percent premium on N95.50, its closing price at the close of trading yesterday.
In his reaction, Sunil Sawhney, Vice Chairman, Seven-Up Bottling Company, said: “As of now, we have received an offer from the majority shareholder of the company. It’s a financial restructuring,”
He said the company has been making losses for some time, adding that the deal is aimed at restructuring the company.
Sawhney, who joined the company in a management change this year, said delisting Seven-Up from the stock exchange after the takeover would be “logical”. The takeover is subject to shareholders’ and regulatory approvals, he said.
The company’s profit started to decline in the first three months of 2015 and then posted its first loss in half-year 2016 and since then losses have widened.

The family of Bilyaminu Bello, the son of ex-PDP chairman, Haliru Bello, who was recently stabbed to death by his wife, Maryam Sanda, have finally broken their silence on the very sad incident that occured on Sunday, November 19th.
A brother of the deceased who spoke to the Nation, said the family is still in shock over the unfortunate incident. The brother who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they are waiting on the law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice prevails in this matter. The brother of the deceased spoke at a night of tribute held in honor of the deceased in Abuja last Thursday.
“So far, the family is grieving. Maryam’s family have come to pay their condolence. The mother has come but what is more painful is the fact that Maryam does not look remorseful for what she did at all. I just pray one day, she finds it in her heart to honestly say what it is that made her do what she did. As a family, we are looking at the authority to do what is right, to let justice prevail. This is an example to others. The way this case is treated will determine how we move forward…Bilyamin was not just my older brother but best friend.” he said
A friend of the deceased, Hakeem Ali, who also spoke at the night of tribute, said Bilyaminu was a prisoner in his matrmonial home. He denied allegations that Bilyaminu was a serial cheater.
'My friend was being held a prisoner in his own home. He couldn’t leave the house in the sense that it was an ongoing thing; the abuse went on for a while. For me there is a difference between love and when somebody is being obsessive. People tend not to understand the difference between love and obsession. It wasn’t the best marriage and I believe either of them could have just walked away. It’s easier to sit down in that sorrow and think you can change things, or that if I can’t have him, no one will. I don’t consider it love. I can’t speak on his behalf. I can’t speak on his personal issue, he is a good friend and he is gone. He was that one guy that the minute we step out, we will be like, it is time for you to go home, your wife is about to call, after hanging out for as little as an hour or even 30 minutes. Even in the afternoon because she always calls. So we formed the habit of going to see him at home. The situation with the law, there are a lot of speculations right now on social media but if Nigeria should excuse people for murder just because they have a child, then if I am a murderer, then I will keep on having babies every week, that is not an excuse, for me. If somebody has committed a murder, either intentionally or by mistake, she should not be allowed to even see her baby because you don’t even know her state of mind. I don’t understand the system. A conversation has to begin on domestic violence against men as well because it’s becoming recurrent. If it is a case of murder by mistake then there is a price to pay of which a family can forgive but only God gives life and only God can take it. So, if you take a life, then your life should be taken. It is that simple. If the evidence shows it is a murder, then there is no excuse. It should be a case of an eye for an eye. It is that simple.”
Another friend of the deceased, Jemila Shehu, who was also at the tribute night, suggested that Maryam might have bipolar disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD
'Our pain is that Maryam Sanda is not remorseful' family of Bilyaminu Bello Speaks ”I have no idea. I was not in her mind. I don’t know what she was thinking. All I know is that they both loved each other. There was love there, only God knows. It beats my imagination and I don’t want to think about it or give any excuse as a Muslim. He is gone but I don’t know what she was thinking. I don’t know what to think about her. For me, she should be punished. She committed murder. So, she should serve the punishment fully. This happened to someone that was loved by a lot of people. He was kind, quiet and people knew them to be in love. So, it beats everybody’s imagination. Domestic violence should be treated. People should relax, love is not by force. Obsession is a disease. There are a lot of people in Nigeria that are sick but people don’t know because you think that if you go to the therapist, they look down on you or think you are crazy but there are a lot of PTSD, bipolar patients and they live among us. Maybe she flipped, maybe it was a psychotic break or maybe she planned it.”
http://insideout247..com.ng/2017/11/our-pain-is-that-maryam-sanda-is-not.html I was surprised to find out she studied abroad and more pathetic to find out that she was never refined by her former environment. |

Business › Re: CBN To Sack Bank Directors With Bad Loans by rhames(m): 9:26am On Nov 27, 2017 |
maximunimpact: Bank directors with non-performing loans (NPLs) are to quit or be sacked, according to a new Code of Corporate Governance approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Director, Bank Examination Department at the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Adedapo Adeleke, said the new code was instituted to address the rising cases of insider bad loans, which not only represent a conflict of interest, but are against the prudential guidelines for the industry.
He described corporate governance as an essential pillar in financial system stability.
Banks’ assets have depreciated in the last three years, with provisions for NPLs hitting N856.9 billion, due to the drop in crude oil prices. A large part of these bad loans is owed by bank directors and are in most cases unsecured.
Besides, the economic recession showed that the financial industry still harbours weaknesses in governance, as seen in insider non-performing loans, unreported losses, huge exit packages for directors, over-domineering executive management, contravention of regulatory/prudential guidelines and lending limits, poorly appraised credits and weakening of shareholders’ funds, among others.
Adeleke, who spoke at the weekend in Kano during a media workshop organised by NDIC for finance reporters, said the Corporate Governance Code for Bank Directors is signed by all bank directors at the point of their appointment, and has a section that empowers the banks’ boards to remove any director with insider non-performing loans. That section says: “If you are having non-performing loans, you will be removed. It is already being enforced except that the regulators are not being dramatic in publishing the names of affected directors,” Adeleke said.
Speaking on the theme: Curtailing the Growth of Non-Performing Loans in Banks: The Role of Regulators and Supervisors, he said that delay or non-payment of workers’ salaries by government and private companies is worsening the level of non-performing loans in the industry. He said the rate of non-performing loans is in excess of 20 per cent as against the five per cent regulatory threshold.
The NDIC director said when salaries are delayed, workers who have borrowed from banks, especially through consumer loans, always find it difficult to pay back. “If the economy is improving, and government can help to fulfill its responsibilities, including prompt payment of salaries, the level of non-performing loans in the industry will drop,” he said.
“If people working in companies that are troubled borrowed from banks, it is important that the loans be provided for when their employers can no longer pay salaries,” he said.
He however, expressed confidence that the current rise in crude oil prices will impact positively on the banking industry and businesses and help reduce the rising cases of bad loans in the industry.
Adeleke said the establishment of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria II (AMCON II) to buy up non-performing loans as being suggested can only be private sector led. “If there is going to be AMCON II at all, it is going to be private sector-led,” he said.
He said the CBN Prudential Guidelines allows banks to review their credit portfolio continuously (at least once in a quarter) with a view to recognising any deterioration in credit quality. Such reviews, he added, should systematically and realistically classify banks’ credit exposures based on the perceived risks of default.

sarrki: • Ex-VP resigned from APC since Oct. 18 –Findings
Olusola Fabiyi, John Alechenu, John Ameh, Friday Olokor, Leke Baiyewu and John Charles
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says he has not ruled out the possibility of holding talks with his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, in pursuit of his political ambition.
Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, stated this on behalf of his principal during a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.
Ibe explained that Atiku, a master of consensus building, would not discountenance the importance of carrying everyone along.
He spoke in reaction to the advice given by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan had, in an interview, described ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo as “the boss of bosses.” He had advised the former vice-president to reconcile with Obasanjo in order realize his political ambition.
Ibe said, “His Excellency, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, is a savvy politician and he will not discountenance the importance of carrying everybody along in order to build a consensus.”
Atiku meets PDP leaders
It was gathered on Sunday that Atiku had been meeting with leaders of the PDP.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Sunday that the former number two citizen had met with members Adamawa PDP executive at all levels, as well as state chairmen from the six states that made up the North-East.
He was also said to have met with the PDP national vice-chairman in the North-East.
The Adamawa State PDP Secretary, Abdullahi Prambe, said, “The meetings have been fruitful.
“Our meetings with him (Atiku) have been fruitful and from his body language, he will soon return to the PDP.”
“With Atiku, the party will carry more weight and more people will come back.”
NAN reported that Ibe, Atiku’s spokesman, declined to comment.
Reps’ APC caucus disagree with Atiku’s reasons
The caucus of the All Progressives Congress in the House of Representatives on Sunday faulted the former vice-president’s reasons for resigning from the ruling party.
The caucus disagreed with Atiku’s position that “factionalisation and lack of democratic principles” forced him out of the APC.
Part of Atiku’s statement had read, “While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalisation, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.”
But, the leader of the APC caucus in the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, told The PUNCH that Atiku was hasty in drawing his conclusion about the party.
He said, “Anytime any member of your family, in this case, political family leaves, you feel saddened. Also, we haven’t had an election as such since 2015 to determine whether or not there is democracy in the party. 2019 will determine that and I wish he had tarried a little while.”
The Chief Whip of the House and leader of the majority North-West caucus, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, said Atiku misrepresented facts.
He said, “It is a clear misrepresentation of facts to accuse the APC and the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration of being undemocratic. I vehemently disagree with the former VP in this respect, especially when he is widely speculated to have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, a party that was widely adjudged to be the most despotic and undemocratic party we have ever had in the history of Nigeria’s democracy.’’
Senators fault el-Rufai’s criticism
Some members of the Senate, including some APC senators, have faulted Governor Nasir e-Rufai of Kaduna State and other politicians who criticised Atiku’s resignation from the ruling party.
Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, (APC, Kwara-South), in a telephone interview with The PUNCH, said the former vice-president should not be underrated.
Ibrahim said, “Let us be strategic in the APC. We should not take it from the angle of the Governor of Kaduna State who said he (Atiku) is a serial defector. This is the kind of words that make you lose what you have.”
The lawmaker noted that while many critics of Atiku’s resignation thought it was for his presidential ambition, the former vice president could choose to back a candidate against Buhari.
Also, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna-Central) said el-Rufai’s condemnation of Atiku was inspired by their long-standing rivalry since the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He urged the APC to consider grievances expressed by the former vice-president, and not criticise him like the Kaduna State governor.
He said, “The attacks on Atiku for changing political party are uncalled for. The APC should carefully study the issues he raised and make the necessary corrections that would convince other party loyalists to remain in the party.”
But Senator Adesoji Akanbi (APC, Oyo-South) said as much as Atiku’s exit from the APC would be painful to the party faithful, the former vice-president had the right to join any association or party of his choice.
Akanbi said, “Everybody has a right to exercise his or her freedom of association. Whatever the reason given by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, it is a matter of choice.”
However, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa-East) urged Atiku “on behalf of my colleagues” to return to the PDP.
He said, “First, he has not moved to the PDP. He has only resigned from the APC. We are appealing to him to please come back to the PDP which he founded.”
Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo-East) described Atiku’s exit from the APC as a bonus for the PDP. He added that the ruling party was on the verge of witnessing a mass exodus of its members to the opposition party.
He said, “It is an indication that the PDP is set to take back power in 2019. Those who left the PDP are now coming back. In days to come, you will see members of the National Assembly and serving governors who left the PDP returning to the party.”
Former VP resigned since Oct. 18
– Findings
The PUNCH has discovered that Atiku had actually resigned from the APC since October 18, 2017.
One of our correspondents’ findings showed that the resignation was kept secret until the former vice-president issued his exit statement last Thursday.
In the letter exclusively obtained by The PUNCH, Atiku said he left the APC because he could not “reconcile” himself with the ruling party’s dismal performance.
The resignation letter was addressed to the card chairman of the APC in Jada 1, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The letter, which was titled ‘resignation,’ was received by Usman Muazu.
The letter dated October 18, 2017, read in part, “I wish to inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress in this ward with effect from the date of this letter.
“I’m resigning from a part we formed and worked so hard, with fellow compatriots across the country, to place in government.
“I had hope that the APC government would make improvements to the lives of our people and the continued existence and development of Nigeria as one indivisible nation. This hope has now been dashed.
“I’m unable to reconcile myself with the dismal performance of the party in government, especially in relation to the continued polarisation of our people along the ethnic and religious lines, which is threatening our unity more than any other time in the recent past, and the unbearable hardship that our people are currently undergoing.
“Let me emphasise again that this is not about me. We have to have a country before people can aspire to lead it.
“While wishing you well, let me express the hope that in the near future, a substantial number of you will join forces with us to, once again, defeat impunity, and restore vision and purpose to the politics of our great country.”
Former gov hails Atiku’s exit
A former governor of Plateau State, Fidelis Tapgun, on Sunday expressed satisfaction with the exit of Atiku from the APC.
He, however, warned the PDP not to give him automatic presidential ticket in 2019.”
Tapgun in an interview with The PUNCH in Jos, said, “If Atiku is leaving the APC and coming back to the PDP, he is coming with a lot of supporters.
“We all know that Atiku leaving the APC is 99.5 per cent minus for the APC.
“The PDP is now back on its feet, a lot of the wrong things done in the past are being corrected. So, all of us are happy to see Atiku back in the PDP.”
Tapgun said he did not expect the PDP to give Atiku automatic ticket for 2019 presidency, describing such practice as undemocratic.
He said, “I don’t expect the PDP to give him an automatic ticket. We want a political party which practises democracy. Anybody who wants to contest the 2019 presidency should indicate interest. There should be a level playing field for anybody who wants to contest.
http://punchng.com/presidential-ticket-atiku-wont-disregard-jonathans-advice-on-obasanjo-says-aide/ I dont want Atiku Abubakar as President of this country in any way. He is almost seventy years old and besides, he is a member of the same cabal that has run this country dry since independence. He was ACG of customs where he served the interest of the Northern Mafia hence he became the leader of the PDM under Shehu Musa Yaradua. He was VP under the most organised corrupt government in Nigeria OBJ's government under which NIgeria squandered the chance to become a powerful nation. His actions and role in the PTDF robbery under OBJ made him run away from NIgeria to avoid disgrace. He has no loyalties and his ambition to rule Nigeria is to further plunder this country to its knees. |

zoba88: As shared by Shawn who lives in Lagos....
'After protesting through out the day,The people of Otodo Gbame slept at the Governor's office when he refused to address them and sneak out through the back door, the taskforce were POWERLESS to do anything at the time because of Media eyes watching and they not having the right to arrest since it wasn't a violent protest. Later that night, when most where sleeping, Taskforce where sent to arrest them all, about two trucks confirmed where brought, It was chaos, Men were beaten and thrown into the van, Woman and Children suffered brutal handling from the Taskforce, the inhumane treatment to human beings who have rights, They (The Lagos State Government) couldn't do anything to these people during the day because they didn't want to tarnish their reputation, seeing public eyes (Different Media Houses) covering the protest, they planned for the night which they know everyone wasn't watching, cowards! Later some people will praise The Governor, and screaming his name, but yet, don't know what goes on at night. God help the people of Otodo Gbame, all they ever wanted was their Land that was UNLAWFULLY demolished. They never attacked anybody, they sang and clapped in this peaceful protest, children laughing and jumping feeling happy. But yet they're treated as if they aren't Human beings. Is Lagos for the rich only? Plans to make Lagos The Next Dubai at the expense of the urban poor, building a Lagos for The Rich,We farm for you, Fish for you,Protect you, Cloth you and you want us out? Please share this, let the World know the kind of Government we have in Lagos'.
