Webmasters / Re: Quickteller's ONE TIME PASSWORD : My Experience And Grievance by routik(m): 2:04pm On Aug 31, 2013
t does not solve anything cos it seems they just want to force everyone to pay 2300 for safetoken.

If you transact frequently on quickteller.com, then getting a token will save you from the anguish of sending "OTP" to 32122 four times without response.

i dont feel the need to use a token on my savings account since i hardly ever need to move funds out of it.
i have tokens on my corporate accounts and maybe they need to work it to be compatible with multiple accounts.

I use a token on my savings account, I only use my current for serious/heavy transactions. I hate "COT" charges.

The mail below solved my problem.

Dear Mr.XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Guaranty Trust Bank Card Services

Kindly be informed that the One-Time Password (OTP) is a system generated password valid for only one transaction. Once you initiate an online transaction on any Nigerian site, If you are a user on the Internet banking platform and have a token, the site requires you to input the number generated from your Bank's Internet Banking token to complete your transaction. However, if you do not have a token, the one time password will be sent to your registered phone number with GTBank. This will apply for every transaction attempted.

Kindly visit any GTBank nearest to you to update your account information if you no longer use your registered phone number with the bank

We would be happy to assist should you require further assistance.

Thank you for banking with us

Kudos to GT Bank for clearer explanation. I don't have to wait for any sms since I have a token.
Webmasters / Re: Quickteller's ONE TIME PASSWORD : My Experience And Grievance by routik(m): 8:26am On Aug 07, 2013
ok, here is a reply i got from quickteller.
We acknowledge receipt of your mail.

Please note that GTBank is responsible for sending OTP to its customers as such, I advise you contact GTConnect for further enquiries or assistance.

If you require further clarifications, do not hesitate to revert.

Thank you.

the responsibility has been shifted to my bank. I'm just amazed. this is not making sense to me.

for those that don't know about ONE TIME PASSWORD (OTP), see below.
[Important Notice, Please Read]
Thank you for your interest in our services.
- Have you ever been prompted to provide a One Time Password (OTP) when attempting to complete an online payment via Interswitch’s WebPAY?
- Are you interested in enhancing the security of your online payments?
By registering for the SafeToken service, the challenges identified above can be overcome. The SafeToken service enables you secure all your online payments by following the registration steps below at the nearest QuickTeller enabled ATM. After a successful registration, an OTP (One Time Password) will be sent to your registered phone number each time an online payment for an amount above the limit specified by the card issuer is presented. The OTP would be inputted on the payment gateway page when making payments in order to complete the transaction.
HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE SAFETOKEN SERVICE
In order to register for this service,

• Go to the nearest ATM, and insert your ATM card
• Select the ‘Quickteller’ option from the ATM menu screen
• Select ‘Pay Bills’
• Select ‘Others’
• Enter ‘322222” as the Payment Code
• Enter your phone number as the Customer Reference Number
• Follow the prompts to complete the transaction
• Service costs N1
*surcharges may apply
Alternative registration options include:
• Completing a form at a bank branch requesting for the SafeToken service
• Automatic enrollment by your bank for the service
• Registration at www.quickteller.com ( the request via this channel requires further authorization from your bank in order for the SafeToken service to be activated)

From quickteller.com website.
Webmasters / Quickteller's ONE TIME PASSWORD : My Experience And Grievance by routik(m): 10:46am On Aug 06, 2013
Hello my fellow Nairalanders,
here is my feedback message quickteller.com this morning, regarding their newly introduced ONE TIME PASSWORD (OTP).

Good Day,
After activating my GTB Naira Master card for your newly introduced One Time Password (OTP), it seems Quickteller is trying to take us back to online-manual tansaction?
I tried toping up my phone this morning, and was asked to send "OTP 7686" to 30010. I quickly sent the message (even twice) and N60 was deducted from my phone, up till now I have not received the "OTP" and my N60 is gone just like that.
I will quickly want to remind quickteller that GT Bank tired something similar last year and due to delay in short message service (sms), they stopped it because it was frustrating customers that was using their Internet banking platform.
Our Telecom industry is doing their best, BUT our SMS system is not yet strong to support this One Time Password (OTP). But why should I pay N30 to top up N100 on my phone, in the name of "OTP"?
In my opinion, I suggest that quickteller should find a better alternative to this "OTP" because it is not working, and I am being discouraged to make any online transaction related to Interswitch/quickteller website.
I have said my own. It's let for quickteller team to decide on what next to do.

Please share your experience regarding this their new development
Computers / Re: Nigerians Are Being Cheated By Isps - Look At My Internet Speed Here In Malaysia by routik(m): 3:30pm On Jul 11, 2013
Though this is not a speed test, but Glo is working well at my resident.
I don't know when we will start getting the kind of speed am seeing in this thread. these kind of speed will encourage cloud computing in Nigeria.
I believe our telecom industry is working towards it.

Computers / Re: Photos Of Google's Massive Data Centers by routik(m): 1:06am On Jul 01, 2013
Google is really determined to "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful".

I don't know what our ISPs are determined about?
Politics / Re: Glo Targets Corporate Clients With Managed Data Facility by routik(m): 10:18pm On Jun 26, 2013
I believe GLO has what it takes to own and maintain a data center in Nigeria. though they are going to face the same challenge Nigerian hosting companies are facing.(TRUST). But if they remain faithful and efficient, they will excel.
Computers / Re: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by routik(m): 7:46pm On Jun 21, 2013
Hmm! indeed we have a long way to go. NCC should hasten up. almost everybody is trapped in "DATA CAP" prison. we need internet freedom in Nigeria.
I recently Read about Google planning to test their "Balloon-Powered Internet". according to what i read, the solar-powered balloons will transmit signals to each other high in the sky, and eventually find their way to a user's Internet antenna on the Earth below.

For Google, the benefits are invaluable--and obvious. The more people on Earth who have access to the Internet, the more people who can make use of Google's online products--and be exposed to its vast advertising network.

It's unfortunate our Telecom industry don't think in this direction.

@samir101ng, I wouldn't mind if you can share with us some of your knowledge source in Nigeria ICT news and information.
Computers / Re: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by routik(m): 2:13pm On Jun 21, 2013
this is getting more interesting.

I have already installed the flagfox. it has great features. awesome!

How can SMEs retail Cloud Computing Services? I don't think the big players in the industry will have much interest in serving individuals/SMEs after investing so much. For the fact that they need quick ROI, they will will focus more on big establishments that will be paying them millions.

@samir101ng, you seem to have enough (buried) information. i'm suspecting you own an ISP?

Sky-walker:

I love what routik is doing which is sharing knowledge and asking questions. i dont know it all but i feel if we all contribute to the thread like ask question and gives answers, we should be able to expand our knowledge a lot

Thanks for the compliment. i believe we are all here to learn, and our interest is different from that of website/software guys.
Regarding the Datacenter Topic, i was the one that made this comment
I have seen one before in Abuja. well organized and properly managed by http://www.gatewaycomms.com/

I have come to realize one fact about Network career and software career. It is not easy for a Network guy that is financially constrained to kick off in his career and Vision. why? because despite that fact he owns a laptop, he needs a home lab. and no matter how small the home lab is, it is still expensive to build compared to a software guy that can easily start his career with just a laptop.
Steady Power and affordable/Reliable Internet issue has always been a big problem to any Network/Data/ISP venture in Nigeria. This alone can discourage a lot of aspiring guys out there that want to follow this path.

Like Solomon said, a man that waits for perfect condition will never get anything done.

@samir, permit me to be using your exact words in closing my post.

The views expressed above however are mine, any errors or omissions are deeply regretted.

security is another issue

will you tell clients that their data is stored in an hotel? grin grin

I am just thinking of the issues that could surround it. it does not mean i am right

An average hotel in Abuja have good security more than some shopping malls in Nigeria. Especially in this era of BH.
I may not be right as well, I am just talking from the perspective of an entrepreneur who is operating in a survival mode.
Computers / Re: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by routik(m): 3:37pm On Jun 18, 2013
using an Hotels' generator is bad for business.what if the generator spoil? do you know how much you will be paying for Hotel bills? If you going to do this and have many clients, you will still need to be validated. Clients will want to see where you are storing their data.
Some hotels have office space for annual rent, if you're getting 70%-90% power from PHCN, the hotel have their own personal Generator, you have a backup inverter and your own personal generator, what else do you need to convince a Nigerian client that you have 99.9% power supply?

I am assuming you'll start small and be thinking big.
Computers / Re: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by routik(m): 3:08pm On Jun 18, 2013
Sky-walker:

no bad though having your own firm.i was thinking about that when i came to Naija but electricity and slow internet is my own major issue especially when it comes to cloud services in naija.

Here in Abuja, I don't have Electricity problem in my office. I can boast of 70% to 90% of power on daily basis, sometimes 100%. To make you understand better, I use N1000 in a week and sometimes it last for two weeks. If i can afford to get an Inverter with two batteries that can power my server, router, and AP for 24/48 hours, then I can boast of 24/7 power supply.
let me give you guys one secret: as an IT person try an get an office inside an average hotel. no matter how small the space is. in my own case, the hotel put on their generator from 6PM to 7AM daily. that's if there is no PHCN.

also i am not sure if Naija companies do outsource their IT dept as most companies does even rely on electronic data in Nigeria. Its just my own thought.i could be wrong though

that is why i'm seriously looking for consumer tailored products/services first. If i succeed in that,it will be easier to get corporate clients.

think about it.

Thanks for your information, i'll check them out. For me, i want to run my IT firm like Coca Cola. coke is not for the rich alone. everyone can afford a bottle of coke. And Coke is not competing with Star, Gulder, Harp, and expensive wines out there.
my target is consumers (end users).
what do you guys think?
brightk:
i love mikrotik but cisco is more popular...wat do u ve 2 say abt this?cos i want to settle for one of dem fully..

I advised my self on this same issue some years back. since i am running my small biz myself, and don't have access to Cisco devices, Mikrotik is doing the job for me (perfectly). i can afford their SOHO routers or better still install the OS on a desktop, then buy the license to activate it.
When i grow up in my career, and there is need for me to get my hands dirty with Cisco router, i'll then look for one to learn with. For now, Mikrotik rocks for me.

@ Topic
as a small business owner, i use small Mikrotik Router. i love Mikrotik and i have their entry level certification. the truth is that i don't have any flair /passion for Cisco because their products are expensive.
Mikrotik is cost effective and very efficient.

@Sky-walker
can you recommend any cost effective Cloud Computing Firm (kind of open source)?
i'll also like to know you better

Computers / Re: Risks And Challenges Of Hotspot On A Large Scale by routik(m): 8:16pm On Aug 17, 2012
samfibby: There isnt really much risk involved in setting up a hotspot especially with mikrotik as it uses the linux kernel distribution (very stable, secure and got options of load balancing and failover). I have worked with Freebsd distributions like pfsense and coova AP, i come to find mikrotik most reliable, though with little documentation for freshers. The forum is the busiest there is and a lot of experieced guys here in nigeria and abroad. If security is a major concern you might set up a radius server with windows server 2008 or linux.

@ Poster, with the above response, i don't think you have any reason to scared of hackers, at worst you consult mikrotik experts to help you out.
Don't forget to always backup your configurations. it will be easier for you to reinstall and restore if anything goes wrong.

cheers.
