Phones / Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellite Internet Targets Late 2021 Launch In Africa by RubiesBanking: 6:03am On Mar 04, 2021
Starlink, the satellite internet constellation being developed by SpaceX, targets Africa’s coverage in late 2021 and 2022.

Only Nigeria may expect the late 2021 launch, while other African countries should have access to Starlink satellite internet service in 2022. To be part of the early users, you have to join the “Better Than Nothing” beta programme because it takes about six months to fulfil a pre-order. You can pre-order on the Starlink website for a refundable $99. The Starlink kit, which includes a mounting tripod, WiFi router, and terminal to connect to the satellites, costs $499.

It is important to note that coverage across countries would vary (see satellites map). With only about 1,300 satellites launched as of February, “users can expect to see data speeds vary from 50 Megabit per second to 150Mbps and latency from 20 milliseconds to 40ms… There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all”, Starlink says on its website.

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX—the parent company of Starlink, has said speed will double to ~300Mbps, and latency will drop to 20ms later this year. He added that Starlink targets most of the populated Earth by the end of 2021 and total coverage by 2022. Thereafter, it would be “about densifying coverage”, Musk said.

Starlink’s goal is to have about 42,000 satellites constellation in orbit by 2027. But the Federal Communications Commission and the International Telecommunication Union have approved only 12,000 of its satellites.

What are the limitations of Starlink satellite internet?
Satellite internet is best for low to medium population density areas. It can also provide internet access to areas where broadband is unreliable or unavailable. However, with a monthly subscription of $99 (that’s about ₦37,000, which is more than the ₦30,000 minimum wage) and $499 (~₦190,000) for the Starlink kit, most people in developing countries may not be able to afford it.

Hence, some analysts had criticised the satellite internet project. They argue that Starlink and its ilks won’t deliver internet access at prices people in developing countries can afford. “It’s a bit like trying to make up for lack of roads by building cars that don’t need them “, Mark Summer, CEO of EveryLayer, told Wired.

Facebook and some of the world’s largest telecom carriers, including China Mobile Ltd, heeded satellite internet critics’ advice to deploy the internet the old-fashioned way, especially in developing countries. In May 2020, Facebook announced that it has partnered with leading African and global operators to build 2Africa, the most comprehensive subsea cable to serve the African continent and the Middle East region.

The regulatory framework SpaceX would have to comply with to operate Starlink in African countries is also unclear. For instance, it is required to obtain a licence before it can operate in South Africa.

Last month, the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (ICASA) said it is having discussions with SpaceX regarding Starlink. Because to operate Starlink in South Africa, SpaceX would need to obtain an Individual Electronic Communications Network Service (I-ECNS) and Individual Electronics Communications Service licence.

Nawa o.. Be like na 2go Trump go finally settle for o, as e dey be.. cheesy..

But on a serious note, we need decentralized social media platforms built on the blockchain technology. Platforms that are transparent and focus on users' freedom: like users having total control of their data without fear of it being sold to third-party organizations; like users having rights to their privacy; like users having freedom over their Contents - right to add, delete, edit their contents without restrictions and without being subjected to the strict rules of the owners of these platforms, etc.. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages..

"Decentralized" platforms like Steemit, Relevant and Vid are capable of disrupting their centralized rivals like Facebook, Twitter Reddit, etc.. But we need them to be completely decentralized for this decentralized revolution to be successful... Hopefully, Nairaland will be decentralized in the future.. cheesy

Back to Donald Trump... I suggest he use Telegram or Signal.. Especially Signal.. A platform recently recommended by Elon Musk himself..

But left for me, I suggest he should use one of the decentralized platforms... It'll make the decentralized platform and the blockchain technology even more popular..

Cos...

The FUTURE is in DECENTRALIZATION.. The future is BLOCKCHAIN..

God bless the blockchain technology...
God bless science and technology.
God bless decentralization.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Phones / Re: CHIP BATTLE: Snapdragon 888 Vs Kirin 9000 by RubiesBanking: 3:22pm On Dec 31, 2020
CPU

The CPU configuration is the first major difference between the Snapdragon 888 and the Kirin 9000. Both processors are octa-core chipsets with the same 1+3+4 CPU core arrangement, however, save for the four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, the rest are different.

The Kirin 9000 may be Huawei’s most powerful chipset but its prime core and three other performance cores are last-gen Cortex-A77 cores. When compared to the prime core of the Snapdragon 888 which is the Cortex-X1, and its performance cores which are Cortex-A78 cores, the Kirin 9000 has some catching up to do even though all of its cores are clocked higher.

According to Arm, the Cortex-A78 offers a 20% improvement in performance over Cortex-A77 while the Cortex-X1 offers a 30% improvement in performance over the Cortex-A77.

When it comes to performance tasks, the Snapdragon 888 should take the lead. However, for tasks relegated to the efficiency cores (Cortex-A55), the Kirin 9000 should be faster due to the cores’ higher clock speed.

Overall performance should show the Snapdragon 888 taking the lead.

GPU

Qualcomm may have won the CPU category but the Kirin 9000 is the winner when it comes to the GPU. The Adreno 660 is said to bring a 35% increase in performance over the previous generation but Huawei claims its Mali-G78 GPU boasts a 52% increase in performance over Qualcomm’s last-generation GPU which is present inside the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Benchmark results indeed show that the GPU inside the Kirin 9000 is no joke. It scores 6261 points on the GPU benchmark app, 3D Mark, leaving the Adreno 650 GPU of the Snapdragon 865 Plus with a score of 4286 points in the dust. We expect the Adreno 660 to do significantly better but we doubt it will be able to outscore the Mali-G78.

AI

The Snapdragon 888 comes with the new Hexagon 780 AI Engine that boasts up to 26 TOPS in performance. The Kirin 9000 also features a powerful tri-core NPU (Dual Big Core + Tiny Core) and currently sits at the top of the AI benchmark table. Qualcomm’s processor is yet to get benchmarked but the semiconductor company promises big gains. It remains to be seen if it can challenge the Kirin 9000.

Conclusion
The Kirin 9000 and Snapdragon 888 definitely bring huge improvements to the mobile chipset space, especially in the Android ecosystem. However, they have their individual strengths, the sum of which determines which of them is the more powerful one.

The Snapdragon 888 wins in terms of CPU performance while the Kirin 9000 seems to be the one with the better GPU and AI capabilities. However, there are other factors to consider such as power efficiency where the Kirin 9000 already does excellently well. So until there is an in-depth device-to-device comparison, we can’t say which chipset is the clear winner.

The Snapdragon 888 launched earlier this week at the Qualcomm Digital Summit 2020. The 5nm processor will power next year’s flagship phones from several manufacturers, a large percentage of which are Chinese. The new Snapdragon 888 joins the HiSilicon Kirin 9000 and Samsung Exynos 1080, the other two 5nm chips that have been announced for Android devices.

We know our readers are curious as to which of these three chipsets is the best but at the moment, only the Kirin 9000 is found in a commercially-available phone, so the only way to compare these chipsets will be on “paper”. For this article, we will be comparing the Snapdragon 888 against Huawei’s most powerful chipset, the Kirin 9000.

Phones / Mediatek Surpasses Qualcomm, Becomes Top Smartphone Chipset Vendor In Q3 2020 by RubiesBanking: 6:18am On Dec 26, 2020
When we talk about the biggest processor makers in the smartphone world, usually brands like Qualcomm and Samsung come to our mind. However, both of these were apparently not the biggest smartphone chipset vendors in third quarter of 2020. According to a new report by Counterpoint, MediaTek was the one that outstripped Qualcomm to get the lead position.

As per the report, the Taiwanese chipset maker performed well in $100 to 250 ( ₹7000 – ₹18,000) price bracket. India and China were two of the most important markets for MediaTek in Q3. One of the reasons for MediaTek’s growth is also said to be the sluggish growth of Huawei due to these US sanctions

Counterpoint adds that MediaTek chipsets were in some 100 million smartphones that were sold globally in the third quarter. All this helped the company to expand its market share from 26% in second quarter to 31%.

The growth of MediaTek also means that it somewhere hampered Qualcomm's market that dropped from 31% share in Q2 to 29% in Q3.

However, Qualcomm right now is still leading when it comes to market for 5G chipsets. It had a share of 39% in the third quarter. As per CounterPoint, the demand for 5G phones increased in Q3 with 17% of all handsets supporting 5G network. And this helped Qualcomm expand its market share.

The research firm says that this 5G trend is likely to continue with 1/3rd of all smartphones that will be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2020. While Qualcomm has brought some new 5G supporting chipsets including the Snapdragon 690, Snapdragon 750G and Snapdragon 865 Plus, MediaTek on the other hand, has also expanded its lineup across different pricing, using its Dimensity range of 5G chipsets.

Health / 19-year-old UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide After Losing N300m To Forex by RubiesBanking: 8:45am On Dec 22, 2020
A 300-level student of the Department of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Gbenga Favour Olaoye-Akanbi, has committed suicide after he was allegedly duped by a forex trader, Eseka Chuckwutem Gospel (ESG).

The 19-year-old student was said to have invested over N300 million belonging to his colleagues and friends in a business run by ESG.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, a friend of the deceased and an investor with the firm explained how they were duped.

He said, "The investment is forex. The guy's name is Eseka Chuckwutem Gospel. We started the investment together this year. It seems he stopped trading, so he turned indirectly to a Ponzi scheme without the knowledge of those investing.

"He has a particular group. Most people in that group collected money from other people to invest in his business. The late Gbenga collected money from different people to invest with ESG at a certain percentage.

"Later on, the investment crashed, and the guy was arrested. With the help of some senior police officials, he was released. So over time, people that were with ESG as investors( they had borrowed money to invest) were now being pressurized to repay the loan they took. I am one of the investors, too; we were under a lot of pressure to pay up. So I think because of this guy's age, he is just 19-year-old, he couldn't withstand the pressure and committed suicide."

A course mate of the deceased said he assured them that forex is not a Ponzi scheme and that he had back up funds, much enough to pay every one of his investors their capital and profits even if things went wrong.

"It's so sad; I have over N5m investment deal with him. He claimed to be the one doing the trading initially, but when the problem started around June, he started mentioning one Eseka Chuckwutem Gospel as his boss. He told us they were arrested together, but that our money was safe with him.

He later promised to pay everyone's capital before December. I was surprised when I saw people posting his pictures with RIP today," he told SaharaReporters.

Sports / Kobe Bryant's Mother-in-law Sues Her Daughter For Financial Support by RubiesBanking: 2:48pm On Dec 18, 2020
Vanessa Bryant is addressing her mother’s “unimaginably hurtful” lawsuit.

Laine, 68, is suing Bryant, 38, for financial support, claiming she worked unpaid as a “longtime personal assistant and nanny” for the family, according to documents obtained by People. Laine claims in the lawsuit that before Kobe’s death, he “promised to take care of” her “for the rest of her life.”

“I have supported her for nearly 20 years, and she was never my or Kobe's personal assistant, nor was she a nanny,” Bryant began. “I have always been a stay-at-home mother and my husband and I were our daughters’ full-time caregivers.”

“For nearly two decades, we arranged for my mother to live in our nearby properties, at no cost to her because she had claimed that she didn't have any money to buy her own home after her divorce. My husband and I felt it was best for her not to live in our home. She watched our girls from time to time, just like most grandparents do. She did not take care of business issues or expenses,” Bryant stated.

“She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request. She now wants to back-charge me $96 per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers. As of 10 years ago, our kids were full-time students and athletes and I didn't have another child until 2016,” she continued. “Her claims are obviously false but I still tried, repeatedly, to work things out with my mother. Contrary to what she's saying, I haven't left my children's side since the accident except to visit the cemetery to make arrangements.”

“Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast. Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn't good enough,” Bryant said.

“She instead contacted me through intermediaries (contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn't changed) and demanded $5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV,” Bryant alleged. “Because I did not give in to her hurtful threats and monetary requests, she has spiraled out of control and is making false and absurd claims.”

Bryant concluded, “She is now trying to get more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive. She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me. She wants to live off of my daughters and me for the rest of her life while continuing to collect monthly alimony from her ex-husband since 2004. My husband and I have never discouraged or kept her from providing for herself. This lawsuit is frivolous, disgraceful and unimaginably hurtful. My husband never promised my mother anything and he would be so disappointed in her behavior and lack of empathy.”
