coogar: yes, he's a backup.....berbatov was bought for £30m as a backup to the holy trinity in 2009. he missed many top games but this did not discourage him from winning the golden boot later. competition brings out the best in players, it shouldn't make them run.

Nah, instead United bought RVP and relegated Rooney - on the back of a 34 goal season - to a jack of all trades utility player. It was all done on the basis of 'punishing' him for his asking for a transfer, simple.

United is pushing him out by saying that Rooney will only be a back up to RVP. If RVP is getting such assurances based on ONE season, Rooney should have received similar backing after scoring 34 goals in 11/12 but he didn't.

If I were Rooney I'd do the same - when the coach has decided on his favourites without even seeing you train, you know the game is up. Ibra knew this at Barca and knew Messi was going to always take precedence and he left. Rooney's actions are very logical - go to where you're wanted.

SailorXY: @Elampiro, Rooney isn't mediocre but he will cause more harm than good as things stand. Even most fans that will be @ Old Trafford week in week out next season are disillusioned in him already. The knowledge that he is no longer an automatic choice should have spurred him to lay claim to former glories & prove himself worthy on the pitch. He has chosen his path, the club must move on.
