I can see it destabilized the little indians. They've been quiet for a while now. But trust them to come back with a vengeance.

But then, this is what we have said for years, Kenya is little beyond Nairobi. What you see displayed by kenyans is just a shiny façade hiding a mud and rotting structure behind it. Whereas countries like Nigeria have open forums where they discuss their problems, Kenya hides its own problems behind fake figures and content with what's going on.

There's no way you can compare Kenya with Ghana or Nigeria. They admitted Ghana was better than Kenya on the other thread. I don't know why the Ghanaians are still arguing with them. If I were a Ghanaian I would just dig out such posts and fling it at them anytime they write nonsense.

Nigeria has got serious problems that look so intractable. At times I wonder how we got here but I look at the structure and especially our northern problem and make a kind of meaning out of it all.

But I just can't make any meaning out of Kenya's myriad of problems. They're small and so indebted. They have more than enough land mass for their population yet the slums keep growing. They have land yet starve. They're relatively peaceful yet the economy remains so small.
And I don't understand how the kenyattas have been able to pocket the country for so long.

But to be honest, I like the longsuffering contentment of the masses of Kenya. They hardly talk I'll of their country. And I like what the Europeans have done with wildlife and nature in Kenya and East Africa. Lastly I also like what they've done with power supply. At least they ensure Nairobi has a good supply. But Kenya can be a lot better if the people are more daring.

While I was reading the comments about Kipevu Terminal, I can't find the exact comment but someone said that Kipevu can only handle small vessels of 200m because it has a quay length of 770m... (Probably took 770/4 vessels at a time), This is inaccurate.. If the old Terminal could handle 300m tankers, you think a new, more modern terminal would be anything less?


FYI, The Terminal is 770m long yes, but its double sided, that means the quay length is 1540m!, that means, any berth can easily accommodate a 400m tanker!

Import substitution in Africa failed like it's failing in Nigeria - because you're buying cement at 3 times...imports would be even much cheaper...maybe 4 times cheaper.

Infant industry protection is hard to pull in a corrupt country like Nigeria - and it has to be done for a short time. Few Asian countries managed to pull it - it takes discipline, strictness and has to be done for a very shortwhile - because an infant cannot grow forever- at expense of everyone - you kill it

Now you 1) import restriction, 2) arbitrage- selling dollars to dangote at almost half the black market rate, giving him cheap loans - and the results inflation double digit every year - many nigerians have been driving into deep poverty - while a few dangotes are becoming billionaires.

For local production or manufacturing to make sense - the prices must be competitive enough with international prices - otherwise you're almost forcing nigerian to prop your few elites.

Alhaji Rabiu is really giving Dangote a run for his money literally and figuratively. He recently signed a deal with the French govt to build a refinery in Akwa Ibom I think.

What you said about the politics being behind most of the bad press Dangote gets is true. Funny enough most of his detractors had no issues with him when OBJ and GEJ where in charge. I not an expert about the goings on in the cement industry but someone who helped stop your country being an import dependent one when it comes to cement deserves commendation. At least companies like Lafarge have been on ground before Dangote ventured into cement business why didn't they think of expanding instead of largely relying on imports?

Don't be surprised when his refinery is up and running and he's enjoying the profits of his investment they will accuse him of monopoly even though a lot of them were given licenses to refine crude years ago.

Buhari has many faults but one good I've seen is if you're a large scale Nigerian business trying to expand they give you the necessary backing whether through monetary policy, government policy like border closure and encouraging local substitute for imported raw materials.
