You are afraid to watch the videos will show Nairobi is modern city that is better than anything even conjured up in all your renders. I want you to watch these selected videos Nairobi city center https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i54Wu3TxVas&t=29s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZRdqC4lhRM&t=53s Nairobi Westland - Kilimani-Lavington Districts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3NIgWNh1Vs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QefIybvNsU&t=18s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdSFW5eBtxQ And that is just small part of Nairobi. Nairobi is overtaking Joburg to become the premier Africa city by 2030. samorobo: |
I know you're are honored by any mild comparison btw Abuja and Pretoria. But Abuja should aim for Mombasa. Nairobi is beating Joburg in 10- max 15yrs. You should watch this video to see what African city can achieve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3NIgWNh1Vs samorobo: |
The SANs must be really bored to compare Pretoria with Abuja or any Nigeria city. Nairobi is the closest that you have city that can measure to South Africa cities - and yet we are 10yrs from their current status. And Nigeria cities should aim for Nairobi in next century https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3NIgWNh1Vs samorobo: |
Nairobi middle-class estates of Kileleshwa, Lavington and kilimani. None of the west africa slumpolis are near here. Their Abuja gov city will get here in 22nd century. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3NIgWNh1Vs |
Reduce weed intake. Accra will be at Nairobi level in next century. vankelvin: |
But we are already better than you. We are almost at universal primary to secondary transition. We are 99.5% - we want to use Ghana double track systems in slums and desert to get 100% - UNIVERSAL primary to secondary transition - mean every Kenyan kid will be getting 12yrs of education. We are I think the best in Africa vankelvin:

First pic - is that Independence house - that is completely derelict. jl115: |
I saw it - and I am helping you understand. Accra is not even at the Kampala level. Nairobi and Kenya are the nearest competitor to South Africa - who are in another level in mall development. Jamestown123: |
KnightandFrank - 2016 - old - Kampala is better than Accra. Nairobi has no peers outside South Africa (another league).
|
You don't understand these things. Malls are measured based on gross lettable space. For instance - Two Rivers has gross lettable space of 65,000 sqm but it's built on 11 acres. The entire Two Rivers Project sits on I think 100-200 acres. West Hill Ghana - gross letable space is not even half of Two Rivers Mall -West Hills Mall (27,000 sq m) Jamestown123: |
I am not sure if it simple fix or you need Abuja. Kenya cities require simple fixes - like building walkways, light rails, formalize transport systems, upgrade slums and bridge the housing deficit - but Nigeria slumpolis are not possible to fix because of the integrated slum. With the exception of Abuja the rest of the cities are so much integrated hodgepodge it cannot be easily fixed. Abohboy: |
Ghana ranks last - Not surprising considering the quality of Ghanian arguments here. In West Africa, Ghana’s performance in the 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) for students in eight grade (second grade of lower secondary in Ghana) indicated low skills level, ranking last in both math and science (Martin, Mullis, Foy, & Stanco, 2012; Mullis, Martin, Foy, & Arora, 2012). |
What they call malls - are market stalls - you find in Eastleigh or Nairobi stalls ![]() Shma: |
And yet you're still doing double-track education - because you lack school facilities. vankelvin:

A Pregnant Ghanaian worries not, why? because all her Pregnancy bills are taken care off by the Government. 7--24/7 electricity supply is a birth-right not an option 6# Kenya too has free maternity cover for every woman since 2013. purposeful efforts geared towards improving the lives of women over the years and more recently, in June of 2013, Kenya declared maternity services free of charge, in all public health institutions across the country, a move that makes access to quality maternal health 7# Kenya has 24/7 electricity. Blackouts make news. |
3) Social welfare. I have seen it ranked with Senegal tops in Sub Sahara Africa Increased coverage of cash transfers from 1.65 million in 2013 to 5 million people in 2019 (of which 2.3 million are women), exceeding the original target of 4.28 million. Poor, hungry(Turkanas), disabled, orphaned, old and such kenya receive a monthly stipend via mobile money. Any disabled person receive that money - they are also tax exempt - and can import anything duty free. Any kenya who is 65yr or (maybe 70) is also entitled to monthly stipend and free medical cover. Tanzanain are exporting so many disabled beggars because the usual disabled kenyans are sorted. https://www.worldbank.org/en/results/2019/04/18/in-kenya-uplifting-the-poor-and-vulnerable-through-a-harmonized-national-safety-net-system Kenya’s national safety net program significantly expanded the coverage of cash transfers from 299,000 to 1.2 million households —an estimated five million people are from vulnerable households of which around 2.3 million are female beneficiaries—through an increased budgetary financing (from around $80 million in 2013 to over $300 million in 2017) and strong service delivery systems. |
That was just health care. 1) Education - we have universal free primary and secondary education. Primary education is totally free including books and equipment (parents and devolved funds responsible for school infrastructure though). Day secondary school totally free. Student who prefer to go for boarding- pay for boarding fees but tuition fees is paid by gov. We are now approaching 100% primary to secondary transition. Primary enrollment similar approaching 100% University Students - Any student who gets C+ (entry-level grade) is sponsored by gov. Also, nearly all students include private ones are entitled to Higher Education Loans - this covers their small tuition and living expenses. The majority of university students pay zero to their universities. Middle-Level college students (TIVET, Polythenic) - They also sponsored by gov. They are also entitled to Higher Education Loans. Most pay zero including for living expenses. This includes teacher, nurses and such training. NYS was disbanded a long time ago as part of University - and is under youth program. NYS recruit basically street kids and the very poor - and they get paid - are put in vocational training while serving the nation. Majority continue working in NYS for the rest of their lives.vankelvin: |
Kenya enjoys all that. I wish you can throw in the number of beneficiaries for each of those program for comparison. 1) Health - Kenya. 1) The public hospital is nearly free - you pay a user fee that is about 1/2 a dollar. They are managed by County Gov. National hospitals by national gov. We have begun universal health care where user fee is zero. 2) Nobody likes going #1. We have the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIF) - that last I checked had about 8M members and 30M beneficiaries.NHIF allows you to choose any hospital - private or otherwise - and covers everything including cancer treatments. 3) Middle class - have their own private cover by medical insurances. 4) Gov employees like teachers, police - in addition to having that free public care, NHIF cover also have medical insurance - that covers them all the way to India if they get sick. My understanding is you have some National Health Insurance scheme that is like kenya NHIF - although yours is a baby. Kenya's NHIF has been operation since 1960s. Kenya NHIF is a compulsory deduction for anybody employed - formal or informal - and also have voluntary scheme. vankelvin: |
Precisely. There is barely any single one that is empty. The reason is because we have private sector. They have no formal market for anything - so even Lagos has housing glut lasting years. Ghana if you build 40-floor skyscrapers who will occupy it. Abuja the entire city is occupied by gov offices and maybe embassies. Where Nigeria seems to be getting right is maybe banking - after the reforms of 2005 - they seem to have finally created a respectable banking sector. Obakillah: |
We have done this edon21: |
Ghana is mini-nigeria. No iffs. No buts. Don't buy the make-believe data. Look at the pictures. Obakillah: |
If you look at Nairobi - and look at Accra - are they really COMPARABLE ON ANYTHING? Even Mombasa looks miles ahead of your biggest city vankelvin: |
Maybe if we include underground houses built by rodents. What is visible is very small. Nairobi including it's metro is very huge. You have to travel 120kms from one end to other end...a radius of 60-80kms. Just30: |
Ghana is mainly black or informal market. It's indicative of lower-income. As people join middle class - they natural start to shop in supermarkets and malls - so Ghana has no middle class. Obakillah: |
You can clearly see the two idle towers of Eko City - so those pictures are very recent. Lagos and Kinshahasa are mega slumpolis. Shma: |
World-leading gold producers that look very sh.itty. I think data cooking is a problem. Development is self-manifesting. You don't need data to know Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, South Africa, Mauritius are doing well. It shows. You just naked eyes. vankelvin: |
Lol. Yes, coz that Accra looks a lot like Kisumu. Treat any stats from West Africa with a lot of suspicions. gallivant: |
Underwhelming. vankelvin: |
Abuja the gov city has nothing on Mombasa on nearly all fronts except the size of gov offices and embassies. popizaino: |
Phase 2 and 3 of that Dongo Kundu road is already under construction. And so will Japanese 1B dollar Dongo Kundu Free Port and special economic zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ1kA4Mi1T4&t=34s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca5rLVwtvaY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts4p-ExATAk |
This not Mombasa port road - this Mombasa's Dongo Kundu by-pass. And you can see it's not just the road but railway - and airport - and port all next to each other - plus Oil refinery (moribund) and industries- so when you talk that Mombasa has no infrastructure we wonder what you mean. samorobo: |
Highway? Like Mombasa city doesn't have highways https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fboeje7rv54 sherlock229: |
