30% 0f Nairobi are proper middle class earning 10k dollars per annum..that is whopping 1.5m Nairobian which explain why outside Joburg Nairobi leads in modern malls in SSA.And Nairobi has 10k dollar millionaires..Lagos has 15k usd millionaire mostly oil barons..Hass track rent price in Nairobi and typical Nigerian have to cramp 15 of themselves to afford in low middle class Nairobi. Nowenuse: |
That really sums nigeria..grandiose projects during oil boom..without any sustanability NairobiWalker: |
And those are upperhill roads under construction NairobiWalker: |
We have about 70 total public n private universities with enrollment at more than 500k.University like Kenyatta at point had i think 70k with Nairobi at 40k students...so our universities are some of world biggest conventional excluding open distance learning universities. kikuyu1: |
Comparing Nairobi to Lagos is like comparing darkness n light.Lagos gotta to do more bleaching.Calabar looks like half decent city you find in kenya...not horrible like most of Nigeria cities that boast of one or two highways and complete lack of infrastructure inside the cities. |
1m indians in Nigeria.Well last census Kenya had 80k Asians..majority of India or pakistani origins..about half are kenya citizens..mostly 3rd generation..and about half non kenyans.. mostly British citizen. There are very few indian indians in kenya coz our immigration is very strict. At independence we had 170k..most left in 1969 for Britain n Norty America as africanication of business was legalized.Unlike many africa countries like nigeria youd be hard pressed to find Indian or asian shopkeeper or such lowly traders in Nairobi. They were not allowed that free reign and they mostly do complex busineess like manufacturing, construction, phamaceticals, publishing, advertising. |
The excuse about size or north nigeria dragging her down is baseless. What would countries north of nigeria say.Nigeria in 70s and 80s after the oil boom basically left their farms for towns...their agricluture collapsed and now you got slum cities without electricity or running water or sewage or tarmac road..a city like kano or ibandan if you look at its picture would shock you...huge slumpolis if there was one.and huge swatch of empty land. Our company recently move to Nigeria and by most account rhe amount of ffallow land is straggering.Over reliance of OIL has completely destroyed nigeria..what was suppose to be a blessing is now an albatrosss on Nigeria giant neck.Kenya on the contary has it easy except for bad governance and pop growth ..both which are now improving or on check...and there is no doubt will soon be a proper middle class country soon. |
Yeah 1.5% of alleged gdp sufferNsmiling: |
The data come from nigeria gdp national accounts which is cooked obaaderemi: |
of course.what a desert to you.UNEP define 70% of Ethiopia a desert. obaaderemi: |
Laughable.Forex reserve is central bank job to ensure you can cover your import bill, pay for external debt and stabilize the currency. Its not wealth. Its indication that nigeria is importing lots of crap they shouldnt. Therefore you cannot sell or bring the oil dollars home but have to keep them in us fed reserve banks to meet import n debt obligation. Its an indication of backwardness. You sell oil to us but you cant bring home lots of billion dollars coz they are needed to import tomato sauce n milk powder abroad and nobody is accepting naira outside nigeria.Countries like norway or saudis keep their forex in soverign funds coz its too much for their economy.Nigerians cannot find dollars to buy locally coz that forex reserve is too little.Us has zero forex reserves.Budget is what you need to focus...its difference btw dreams n reality as far as public investment goes..stuff like roads or rail or education.Nigeria 30b usd budget id the worse in planet per capita if am not wrong.Somali when i last checked at it lowest had 1b dollars for 5m people. You have 36b for 200m people..that is less than 1b for 5m nigerians. obaaderemi: |
I provided the source..a nigerian..yeah i have checked 2018 figures and it much less..50billion..but still Angola have done themselves proud..from war to now a big economy with luanda a small rio obaaderemi: |
I know youre desperately searching for something nigeria is better than kenya but crop density is just lame.Facts dont lie.Facts are stubborn. This is so underwhelming obaaderemi: |
Typical nigerian nonsense..crop density of pea nuts is not equivalent to a vineyard in france obaaderemi: |
You nigerians are not to blame - you've one worst education system. Only 15% of Ethiopia is arable. 10% of Kenya is arable. Around a whooping 40% of Nigeria is arable. Obviously that has not stopped kenya from being an agricultural power-house. obaaderemi: |
Kenya is doing well - we've grown for the last 15yrs - and will definitely grow for the next 15yrs. our economy has grown from 12B to now 88B - and so in 15 yrs - we expect that 88M to transform into 500B. And it' won't be cooked. Our growth sectors are well known and not cooked 1) Agriculture & livestock is main source of economy at 25% - tea & horticulture bring about 3B dollas and we are global leaders in both.Dairy industry -we've overtaken South Africa and produce billions litres of milk - by investing in modern dairy farming. Coffee..best quality beans out there. 2) Manufacturing 10% (we are second biggest source of manufactured goods in comesa after Egypt) . 3) Financial & inter-mediation 10% ( arguably now one of Africa's most developed after South Africa - & globally one of fastest growing). 4) Retail & trade at 10% ( Without doubt Africa second most developed retail & wholesale sector after South Africa - with so many homegrown super-market and malls that are starting to rival south Africa) 5) ICT at 10% (Without doubt Africa best -and probably equals South Africa). 6) Real estate & Construction at 10% (Without doubt Africa fastest growing & most profitable - with so many skcrappers under development including Africa tallest building at 70 floors...and couple around 50 floors). 7) Social sectors - you know we have budget the size of Nigeria...so we spend a lot in education, military, social services. 9) Tourism & hospitality - Invented the world safaris and definitely the choice destination for many travellers worldwide. 10) Energy (Example of having green energy - largest geothermal power in Africa - and largest wind farm ) And other small sectors. Kenya GDP IS VERY VERY SOLID. NOTHING COOKED. Danielnino00: |
Entertainment/fashion is BS that explain why your GDP is bullcrap. What is total earning from nollywood & fashion seriously? - and what agriculture do you have - maybe cassava? coz you import tonnes of food. Daejoyoung: |
That is the other joke I hear people talk about. What highest earning from Nigeria movie? I'd be surprised if nigeria entire entertainment industry was worth even 0.5B dollars per annum. That would be about 0.05% of your GDP..when not cooked. jason14: |
I have heard you can't drive with your windows open in Lagos - and thugs are all over. samsobo24: |
Anything calculated by Nigerian Stats office is not worth the ink it's written on. Maybe you can help us say with some data showing how big a consumer market Lagos is. You can pick any sector - and you may be able to convince somebody that Lagos is not a mega slum. nwoke37: |
Plans. Where you total revenues are so tiny. How will they materiliaze. Nigeria is using 1,800-4,000MW (when they max out) - so I don't think adding more MWs is the solution. She need to resolve the basic issues...pre-paid meters can solve cashflow issues plauging your power sector...and the turbines can turn again 24-7 and you'll be able to enjoy constant power like many African countries..including somalia which is at war. But it's about PLANS and GDP and Dangote. nwoke37: |
I doubt the effectiveness of LRU - and then the plans - those are hilarous - Nigeria has 12,000mw of installed capacity - and it manages to only use 2,000MW - just tell me how adding more installed capacity will solve anything. Are you guys this dumb? The current installed capacity is enough to supply the entire nigeria with constant 24-7 electricity. At you level of poverty - your per capita power needs are low (mostly lighting a bulb & watching TV)- just like in Kenya - the average household - need maybe 0.5kwh per day - and 12,000mw can give you what 240,000,0000kwhs...more than enough to supply the entire nigeria. The problem is not more generation...it's maintaining the existing ones..ensure they are running 24-7hrs - by making sure people are being smart-metered and they are paying for power...giving money to distributor to pay the producer...and slowly moving from 1,800MW per day to 12,000MW per day...otherwise the idle capacity you have is staggering. But all of you are mostly idiots just shouting GDP, Dangote, and Big PLANS. Kenya generates about 2,500Mw - and it uses 2,000MW with 500MW just idling there for any surges -- and it supplies 4-6M household with power - and you'll be suprised that only about 6,000 of it's customers - the big industries consume 80% of our power. Household consume nearly nothing....lighting 5 bulbs at night for 3-4 hours, charging their phones or laptops, at best a fridge and watching TV....the entire lagos can function with 1,000 MW. nwoke37: |
For the umpteenth time cooked GDP cannot be EATEN. It just one tool politician use to delude you. In your poverty you think you're the best in Africa - better than South Africa or Egypt. That is grand delusion. I mean it's still deluded to think the quality of life in say Ghana or Kenya is equal to Nigeria but that is forgivable. Just travel to any Africa country - and you'll only compare nigeria to South Sudan, Somali,Burundi, DRC, Niger and Chad. Check any serious indices - not GDP - and you'll see Nigeria ranked bottom 10 - after Haiti, Chad, Niger, Burundi, South Sudn, Somalia, Central Africa Rep and maybe where else is life that bad? Benin and Togo maybe? Liberia & Sieraleone? Or Eritrea? And maybe Yemen? And Madagascar island. The very bottom 10-20 in every indices out there. Ask any nigerian who has travelled to Nairobi or Kenya!! to tell you just how crappy and desperate your life is in Lagos. But your politician will tell you're the African giant with biggest economy. The 21st century joke! Better than South Africa and Egypt - nigger nigeria?jason14: |
Let me first finish reading the fact that you can't afford to open your car windows in lagos - otherwise your phone will be gone. Is that 2002? Are smartphones that damn expensive. Thugs with guns breaking car windows? Please kindly accept the fact that Lagos is crappy little mega slum and can't be compared to Nairobi... I mean after struggling the whole day with generator..going back home to your electricity less, water less, sewage less house...you still have to battle thugs amid horrendous traffic in some of the most grotesque public transport. I really feel for you guys. And then you switch on the generator again at home and whole city start the humming along in the most annoying generator din - that will kill me. And lets not talk about Okada - the motorbike for today - I know they are in kenya - but not in nigeria number - okada noise+generator noise - that got to drive many folks insane. https://www.nairaland.com/2653841/uber-partner-lagos-please-share/665#67032862 samsobo24: |
I have seen Nigerian police - I think they are the worst I have seen - remind me of Uganda police in 90s - right from their uniforms. They are worse than kenya watchman. That happens when there is no budget for the police. We spend nearly 2B dollars on our police...for cars..alone...we don't buy...we lease brand new cars every year for something close to 30B naira. Nigerian simply don't have the money for modern policing..except maybe in 2 or 3 island or gated community. As regard to crime...this uber nairaland thread is shocking https://www.nairaland.com/2653841/uber-partner-lagos-please-share/665#67032862 samsobo24: |
And yet crime is a problem. This is like saying Island X or Y has a generator and borehole - while rest of Lagos is shit-hole. I stumbled upon a nigeria uber thread..and boy the crime in Lagos is astounding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! samsobo24: |
These are not dumb CCTV like you. These are intelligent cameras - a contract we gave China's Huawei - for Naira 60 Billion. Can Nigeria with their small budget afford to buy CCTV for 60 billion Naira? This is the project: Which has been functional for 2-3 yrs now. A mismanaged Nigeria can only dream about what Kenya does!! and without OIL. The IPSCSS17 will result in the installation of 1) 1,800 CCTV cameras with face and motor vehicle number plate recognition capabilities in strategic locations in Kenya’s two big cities of Mombasa and Nairobi; 2) setting up a command and control centre where footage from the CCTV cameras and handheld devices will be relayed in real time; a video conferencing system; 3) connecting 195 police stations with high-speed internet; 4) the development of a 4G LTE18 network for the police with 80 base stations; 5) supplying the police with 7,600 radio communication devices with SIM cards and photo and video capability; 6) and linking 600 police vehicles to the command and control centre. And all Nigeria can dream is some island or gated community having half of that ![]() jason14: |
You're more stupid than rest of nigerians. Which is something. There is crime but we are NOT in Lagos or Joburg level. We are fighting crime...ask the nigerians who are now filling up our prisons. jason14: |
Yeah - 3 round abouts is big deal - and footbriges. Bus stops. E-GIS. CCTV. You guys need to visit functioning city. Nairobi is one such smart city...as you droll about 13,000 cctv cameras...Nairobi already implemented all that. We spend 150M usd to install not only CCTV cameras but intelligent cameras including facial recognition, number plate recognition & police commands centers in Nairobi & Mombasa..that is why we have reduced terror attack to nearly zero....despite bordering Somalia. https://www.sde.co.ke/sdemedia/sdeimages/saturday/sfck0grmfczkhu575bc1021ef31.jpg Unlike Lagos - which is a thug paradise - you can't try any such in Nairobi or Mombasa - because chance are - there is an intelligent camera watching you - with intelligent face recognition and if you have car - your plate recognition- and we have functioning 991! Watch Nairobi beat crime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=26&v=4H5IVEC-RDg https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/files/2016/12/CCTV-COMMAND-CENTRE-1.jpg Watch at our police command center - receiving 50,000 calls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_999UQ2ehM With your little budget - you cannot to invest in modern CCTV or policing. samsobo24: |
I hope these are the worst bunch but based on the evidence so far - it obvious the country is one big zoo like somalia. It just a little better because it got lots of oil..which they have wasted. kikuyu1: |
If you need to go 30yrs ago - you'll see our forex has grown with our GDP/Import/debts - and has NEVER been an issue! Our economy is so diversified - no one sector bring forex or takes forex! https://d3fy651gv2fhd3.cloudfront.net/charts/kenya-foreign-exchange-reserves.png?s=kenyaforexcres&v=201804231002v&d1=19180101&d2=20181231 And Nigeria swings with OIL. You're NOTHING without oil. Zero economy. Just agragrian primitive economy that relies on oil. https://d3fy651gv2fhd3.cloudfront.net/charts/nigeria-foreign-exchange-reserves.png?s=nigeriaforexcres&v=201803312134v&d1=19180101&d2=20181231 Here is the oil graph https://media.ycharts.com/charts/ce114e0986a6137921496bed416313e6.png |
