captalex: In a similar but slightly different position,
Just completed my NYSC and successfully applied for a job in a multinational,my only fear is that would i be able to learn as much as i would want during my stay here against working with a 'local' company that doesn't pay much but you get to work you bum off and in turn learn stuff, or would i become lax and rely on the fact that i'm currently with a 'BIG' brand and be rest assured that future employment wouldn't be a problem.

You're in a different 'situation' and you're giving yourself highly unnecessary headache.

Career / Re: Admissions To Study On Scholarships For Master's And Phd. Possible? by Sammy107d(m): 8:58pm On Nov 21, 2012
Knowing nigerians and how (un)reasonable we can get, I'll suggest you structure this mildly laudable venture a little better. Give NO admission guarantees. The school themselves don't give it to the brightest applicants. Make the possibility of not securing admission very clear to your clients and promise a 50 percent refund of the 65percent if the application is not successful. Of the 30k, that's just under 10k sunk for your clients, and you'll have a more valuable proposition. Do not touch the 50percent refund until the application is successful. Just my opinion.

Not totally right with ur analogy cos its same effort it takes 2 program on my space it takes for facebook plus no 1 is talkin abt relevance...if A is down hw relevant can u be in bringin back dis product?its nt jst name its wat u learn, wat if u go 2 d so called popular co and ure nt so useful jst 1 of d oda staff

To me, everything you just said is relevant for someone in the mid-range of his career. What's a fresh grad doing trying to resuscitate a brand? Besides, people are quick to downplay the depth of experience gathered at popular brands. In fact, human resource utilization is probably more optimal in these companies.

I'm of the opinion that although a fresh accounting grad might gather more learnings and experience at Sammy and Co LLP accounting firm, possibly with more pay and serious perquisites, he's better off with Ernst and Young FRESH after college. Go to sammy and co after. There's a reason that brand is a requirement for many job openings. You see things like 'big four experience is an advantage...' '2:1 with related experience in a 'reputable' multinational (emphasis on 'reputable'). Trust me, an interviewer for any e-commerce venture is more likely to recruit someone who's been doing, say, product development at amazon.com than some other guy who was instrumental to transforming a 50 orders/day sammybee.com (whose co-founder was indicted for fraud three years ago) auction site to a 200 orders/ day auction site in 3 months. 300% increase single-handedly, but all the interviewer will see is Amazon Amazon Amazon (maybe later brag in his brochure that he has ex amazon employees or boast to his friends at the beer parlour that he poached an amazon employee..)

OP is smart. I'm sure he won't choose an offer from a gutter drenched brand over a solid, well-known brand. How else will the rubbish brand attract talent if they don't offer blinding salary figures.. Only accept such an offer if it's the only one you're holding in your hand or if you place high premium on things like personal time and location. If his personal time is really dear to him, then he'll be justified to take the job with better hours. All about individual values.

obowunmi: Who makes a comparison between Goldman Sachs and Lehman...lol

But no comparison. Thanks!

Exactly. Simply mentioning the company names will put the discussion to rest. Think long-term. That's what I always say. If it's a Lehman Brothers, then the brand bloody matters for someone with a choice! They probably know that too, hence the really good pay and work hours to attract talent.
Career / Re: Great Job At A Company With An "Uncool" Brand? by Sammy107d(m): 1:51pm On Nov 19, 2012
Not really about what his friends think. My comments are premised on the assumption that he has offers from 2 companies. One cool, the other less than cool. Also, I'm not suggesting that a programmer by nature should work as a public relations staff or something. Two offers based on this sample background: He lives in Chicago, graduate of Finance, loves investment banking.

Offer 1: Lehman Brothers (At the center of financial crises; presumed dead, but good financial position) for the role an Investment Analyst. $60,000 salary. Chicago head office. Slow-paced. 8am-5pm

Offer 2: Goldman Sachs; To work with Corporate Finance. $50,000. Wall Street, New York. Fast-paced pressure. Work hours as many as needed. Possibly frustrating.

I'd say, hoping right out of college, stability, pay, location and comfort shouldn't be the determining factors. I'd go for Offer 2 simply because it's Goldman Sachs, it's in Wall Street, and still within my field. Also because it's cool and I can more easily get into JP Morgan or HBS after.

Lasting less than 1 year at your first job is a red flag to employers. You should generally plan to be in one spot for about 3 years. Anyhow, I think ekt is pretty young, so he can afford one or two early career hits grin

Not at the very beginning of your career. Most fast-paced youngsters spend the first 18 months of their careers diversifying their experience, and employers don't look down on that. If your 10 years of experience constitute 10 different year-long jobs though, that's a major red-flag. My opinion is that 0.5yrs Facebook + 1.5years Google + 3years Amazon + 5 years Yahoo is a richer career than 3yrs AOL + 7yrs Hotmail or 10yrs Ebay. My assumption is that it's easier to move from Facebook to Google than from AOL to Google...

My point is that you're unlikely to last more than a year on your first job. Consequently, your primary thinking should be how you'll be positioned for your next job. Think long-term. Entry-level pay cannot diverge that radically. You're young, and location should be a non-issue. Long-term bro. A 6month stint as 'debugger' (whatever that is) at Facebook Inc. on your cv will position you better than a year as an 'Interface developer' at freakin' Myspace inc. What's your business with financial position. Leave that for wall street analysts.

A lot of you are so full of ****. Whether or not some students won some competitions against MIT guys, the school is still a shithole. That the other schools are shitholes doesn't excuse this one from being better. That it's hard to gain admission doesn't take away credit from the main point that the school is a shithole that deserves to be egged. And did someone who can't get over sms-language just ask him to check his spelling?

There's no maths in Accounting. It's enough to be simply numerate. If you ever decide to solve for x, you'll be going the extra mile, and that'll be commendable.

I'm also a sucker for brand and I'll think twice before accepting an offer from 'AOL.' In the absence of a Google offer though, AOL is a pretty good starting point. At this stage of your career, I'd rank brand really close to job description, and well over salary, hours and location.

code_0: Brother, just do your best. Having first class is not a factor that you'll be successful in life. What you need is God. Remember that all things work together for good to them that love God. So it actually a decision [of] if you want to function by your own abilities or God's. That doesn't mean you'll have to care less about life but just do your best and pray. Don't be afraid of anything.

If I didn't know God personally, this sort of comment would have served to reinforce a staunch atheist mindset I'd have cultivated.

There's an infinite number of good jobs, and no programme will exist if its creators didn't believe it to be 'good.' If a 17 year old approaches me and asks what he should study to get a good job (I prefer the word 'career'), I'll say: "study anything well; try Etymology..." The question should be phrased somehow like this: "Is Guidance counselling and Psychology a good programme to enable me do xyz in the yyy industry z years from now?" A graduate of that programme can do anything from educating 7 year-olds to researching ergonomics for General Electric. Both good jobs depending on the lens he's looking through.

There might be traces of Yoruba in Cuba, but it can't be said of the Caribbean in General. Apart from the governor general's residence with the name 'Ilaro court' and other traces like street names in Tobago, there's nothing Yoruba or Igbo in those places. As black people, we only look alike, of course...

Career / Re: 40k Monthly Permanent Job Or 80k Monthly Contract Job. Which Would You Choose? by Sammy107d(m): 9:10am On Nov 08, 2012
Finally got a computer. So at the conservative central bank's benchmark rate of 12%(rationale for choosing that is debatable), the present value of your 80,000 monthly salary is N900,406.20. With a 40,000 monthly salary at the same rate, you will work for approximately 25 months and 10 days to achieve the same. Now, juxtapose that with the probability that you'll keep a job for 25 months and 10 days (if that's not already intrinsic in the interest rate)...

Calculate the present value of an N80,000 annuity for 12 months using the prevailing deposit rate. Using the result, calculate the number of months it'll take to achieve the same on a N40,000 annuity. Your answer will be obvious after.]

Why calculate 40k annuity, when d job is not 4 life.

Annuities have limited terms. Perpetuities don't. The present value or a perpetuity is simply the periodic cash flow divided by the interest rate. Let me just answer the question myself. Assuming you can earn an annualized interest rate of 6%, the present value of 80k is:

PV of the 80,000 annuity = 80,000 [(1 - (1/(1 + .005)^12)) / .005] = ?

.005 is the assumed monthly interest rate.

When you get the answer, keep it in the same formula, change 80,000 to 40,000, change ^12 to ^n and solve for n. I bet you, n will be more than 24 (months). Typing on my phone so I can't do it. Alternatively, plug it all in a financial calculator or some google tool and get your answer in seconds.

It's good to look beyond simple back of the envelop calculations before taking life decisions.
