49 million? And another 40 million now have access to cars under GEJ. Hmm

"Agberemi quoted the 2013 National Demographic Health Survey, which shows that only 28.7 Nigerians have access to basic sanitation facilities."

40 million car owners, 49 million public defecators, estimated 70 million children and old-people.

Conclusion: If you don't own a car in Nigeria, you defecate openly.

abila122:

lets compare Nigeria with order african countries listed in GDP - real growth rate;
1. Tunisia CIA fact book GDP world rank - 124
2. Morocco CIA fact book GDP world rank - 55
3. Libya CIA fact book GDP world rank- 217
4. Gabon CIA fact book GDP world rank - 28
5. Algeria CIA fact book GDP world rank - 111
6. Egypt CIA fact book GDP world rank- 150
7. south Africa CIA fact book GDP world rank- 143
Nigeria is at- 35 only exceeded by gabon
taiwoflb:
Acording to International Monetary Fund (2013) Nigeria GDP world rank is - 20
Acording to List by the World Bank (2005–2013) Nigeria GDP world rank is- 20
Acording to List by the CIA World Factbook (1993–2013) Nigeria GDP world rank is- 30
So it is very possible to be among the 20 developed countries by 2020

GDP and GDP growth rate (per capita or absolute) have little to nothing to do with development. For example, we're have Africa's largest GDP and one of the highest growth rates, but we're not in the top 3 most developed. For example, Norway has about equal GDP as Nigeria, and lower than the US, but more developed in most metrics than both.

With extreme visionary leadership, far from what's currently tabled before us, we can probably get close to Libya and maybe Gabon, but that'll be a hard fight.

"The World Bank defines Libya as an 'Upper Middle Income Economy', along with only seven other African countries. Substantial revenues from the energy sector, coupled with a small population, give Libya one of the highest per capita GDPs in Africa. This allowed the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya state to provide an extensive level of social security, particularly in the fields of housing and education."

"In 1998 the budget allocation for education represented 38.2% of Libya's total national budget."

"In 2010, spending on healthcare accounted for 3.88% of the country's GDP. In 2009, there were 18.71 physicians and 66.95 nurses per 10,000 inhabitants. The life expectancy at birth was 74.95 years in 2011, or 72.44 years for males and 77.59 years for females."

But even with the above, Libya has severe problems with unemployment, infrastructure etc.. So Nigeria can probably beat them.. with visionary leadership. Still, that's one out of 100. How do we get to the top 20?

Your assessment is just amusing, is it the FG thats kidnapping, employing militants, boko haram or creating corruption?...Corruption alone starts from the everyday Nigerian; the people in government aren't from mars. Thesame goes for kidnapping and the rest, its mostly useless and unaccomplished people like yourself that go about doing all sorts just because you believe the federal government should provide your every need. Finally, i totally agree with the other poster that the federal government has made the economy more favorable for entrepreneurs and investors.

How? Is it by better access to funding, better power, better technology infrastructure like cheaper Internet connectivity, better road networks, tax breaks for startups, investment in research, 72 hour cheap business incorporation etc. What has the government done to ensure that an entrepreneur will find it easier starting up in Nigeria than, say, Kenya? Talk to any of these entrepreneurs and they'll tell you how difficult the market is. The only reason they're here is out of necessity to create livelihoods in a 160m market. The population is huge and at least 10% of them have decent purchasing power. That's the biggest selling point, not "enabling environment and fresh air".

AjanleKoko: A lot more Nigerian wanna-be entrepreneurs need to watch the show 'Dragons' Den' wink

Often, I offer investment in basic, unarticulated ideas without even picking holes in them yet. Entrepreneurs get protective when I expect to co-manage and own equity. I'm thinking about structuring these small investments ($1000-$7500) in the near future. I'm using this forum to measure the degree of frustration I should expect.

Also, I see no compelling reason to throw 1m on a poultry (or any of those nysc-camp entrepreneur trainings) when I can walk down the road and find 10 sellers of chicken and eggs. I'm interested in seeing the business plan anyway. Maybe there's a differentiation strategy. Not just looking for a 50k/month idea. Looking for a 50k/month plan that could become 500k/month in the future while maintaining the same number of chickens and staff.

I think my terms are quite generous compared with what you'll otherwise obtain elsewhere from more structures investors. If entrepreneurs think these terms are stringent, then I'm afraid 'funding' will remain an issue and they're not ready for business. This is the sort of insight I'm looking to get regarding the mindset of entrepreneurs. I've found that most budding entrepreneurs are too protective of their undeveloped idea, and are overly averse to anything equity or concession of some control. Unfortunately, investors are not stupid. Please keep it coming.
Business / Survey: I'll Give You 250,000 by Sammy107d(m): 6:08pm On Jul 07, 2013
Hi all, I'm running a quick survey for a project that could depend on your answers. If I assess your business plan and offer to give you N250,000 or more for 20-25% equity in your (risky) idea--effectively valuing it at 1-1.25m--and I mandate you to have me on your management, with significant say in how you manage your finances and business, can you confidently tell me you'll commit 100% of your time and generate at least 85,000 monthly profit (after paying yourself a small salary)? You will have to grow the business by 50% every year and you'll have the option to buy me out in 3 years at a premium. Also, would you agree to distribute my share of net income to me in cash bi-annually to enable me fund other projects? You'll be legally bound to all these, with very punitive consequences if you renege.

Note that you'll also have to commit about the same amount into an account that will be strictly regulated, and my 250k will only come as a 'round 2', otherwise, we'll be talking about more equity than 20% to compensate for the risk, and I'll be responsible for most of your procurement.

You are right as regards Brunel MBA being under 5million but why would I bother applying to schools in that category? Are they better than LBS? My OPINION is that LBS offers the requisite knowledge in a local context. I want to learn about doing business in the Nigerian economy. If I had the finances to travel out, I would go for a school with "clout" INSEAD, IESE, ESADE, Harvard etc where a Fortune 500 would grab me before my program was completed.

In the end, I don't see how a Brunel MBA beats LBS MBA....so its LBS all the way

Brunel is no LSE or Cranfield, but it's still a bit far-fetched to compare it's MBA programme with Lagos Business School's. Brunel is still a top 20 business school in the UK with a 15m average starting salary. Not a lot, but better than most (with limited experience) in LBS. When it comes to business education in the UK, I wouldn't touch the top 20 in the FT rankings below. Regardless, LBS' Executive MBA (not the traditional) is still in the top 60 globally and 2nd in Africa, and the school's profile is top-notch for it's price and environment.

Have to say that's an unfortunate organizational culture. If it's the culture one finds himself, then sure. i just disagree that it's the blanket address symbolising respect. If someone respects you, you'd know beyond sirs or ma. For me, its getting the required work done and on time. Generally, not playing around the quality of work and deadlines I assign. Also being open to learning and asking questions. I'd like for this thread to take the casual/dynamic workplace vs formal/structured workplace direction. Really interested in learning what people prefer.

well, well, well
I believe that at this point in this thread we've been able to establish a couple of things
1) A big name school does matter in some companies and many places
2) It doesnt mean they are smatter than you, its just what it is
3) It doesnt mean they'll get better paid than you, but they'll get better paid than many
4) It doesnt mean that if u dont have a big name school in ur CV you wont get specialized roles in some companies, .. but it does mean that it would be statistically harder
5)It does mean that elitism is in demand (there's a study that finds this trumping over race)
6) Getting a big name school in your cv apart from some intelligence needed, would need some N10 million annually (pretty cheap in terms of cost benefit analysis)

Case closed. Thanks for a good discussion guys.

Acidosis: An employee would always be an employee even if you work for Microsoft, IBM etc..

I don't know if schools are relevant or not, but I'm sure these schools are over-rated.

Mind you, before an employer would boast of a salary scale of a million naira per month for his havard trainee, know fully well that a million naira is an equivalent of what he (the employer) spends on his dog per week and pls don't be deceived, the same amount is the least the company has ever made in 1hour. Some how, the company cheats the harvard guy. You can never be 'smarter' than the CEO even if you have a 1st class degree.

Btw, if the total school fees of a graduate from OAU (100-400l) is N100,000, give me one reason why such graduate won't settle for a N100,000 monthly salary..

Ordinarily, it will be f00lish for anyone to settle for the same amount after paying a fee ranging from 10-20million for a 3year programme.

Its about your pocket; your class.

..and I wonder why someone said we shouldn't mention Dangote lol.. may be cos he didn't attend LBS cheesy

Your analogy seems a little off. In many many industries, 1million is pretty standard. In fact, that's only a lot in Nigerian terms. It's not even up to $100,000 a year. The average Harvard MBA earns $150,000. Also, whether you're a start-up or a billion dollar company looking to recruit a Harvard MBA, regardless of what you earn, prepare to pay north of $100,000. I know of start-ups that have employees earning more than the founders. Employee pay is not relative to the CEO's earnings; it's commensurate with the value (or perceived value) added.

There are virtually free schools in Germany and Scandinavia, whose graduates command the highest salaries in Europe. The OAU graduate who studied on a full academic merit scholarship and later settles for a N100,000 monthly salary settled for one of these reasons.

1. He's only desperate to get some experience and values that over pay
2. He doesn't think he's worth more, so he didn't negotiate
3. He's dispensable or it's the industry standard for that position, so the company will just employ the next guy instead if he tries to negotiate at all.
4. He'll live comfortably with 100,000
5. He has no other options

The Nigerian guy who went to Brown on a full scholarship will not settle for N100,000 for the following counter reasons:

1. He could get similar experience elsewhere and get at least 3 times more money
2. He knows the earning power of his graduating class and that before him, and he'll negotiate to that standard
3. He actually thinks he knows his stuff, and thinks he's the best in the lot for the job, so he'll negotiate up to what he thinks he deserves. If the company can afford him, they will; otherwise, they'll negotiate fiercely before going for the next guy.
4. Even if he can live comfortably with 100,000, he knows he can earn much better
5. He has 3 other offers awaiting his response all offering at least $20,000.

The only difference between these two guys is not what they studied, how much they paid for the education or how smart they are. They're both equal in every respect. Just that one person went to an Ivy league school and the other went to OAU.

Asked not to mention Dangote because he's an outlier. The one in a million. Like Wole Soyinka, the one Nobel winner from from Nigeria versus the 89 Nobel winners from Cambridge alone....

Finally, LBS? Hope that's London Business School, not Lagos. Although Lagos business school is the only business school one can reckon with in Nigeria. Really proud of what they're doing over there.
