Efewestern:Maybe because I was born in Lagos or that I did excellently well with my Yoruba classes as a student but the truth remains that Lagos representatives have rights to make certain moves to preserve and grow their culture and their language. If you have ever witnessed non Yorubas who don't even understand the language fight for positions in Lagos, you'd be irritated. A certain Igbo politician in 2015 contested for the governorship of Lagos and he claimed he is contesting because he understands the Yoruba way of life and their culture. All these he said in English. When a caller called Channels TV to ask him questions, he was asked to interpret 'Lagosians, I greet you, I need your votes' and that was where trouble started. An average Lagosian communicates with Pidgin while the typical Igbo language is used in Enugu, not minding whether you are Igbo or not. Based on my encounter, I am not motivated to learn the Igbo language largely because L1 speakers believe I must learn their language because I am in their land. You cannot get a civil servant job if you aren't Igbo or even from Enugu here. My point is, we are fast getting to the point where every man would answer his father's name. It would have been a different ball game if this move was initiated in Delta State, owing to the fact that we have several ethnic groups. It is now a case of 'get of of the kitchen if you cannot stand the heat'. Lagos was far more developed than any region before Independence and Yoruba was widely spoken then. I am not sure it would change now that the Yoruba language is now mandatory. |
Afam4eva:This mindset is so wrong and dangerous! There are reasons why Yorubas have kings all over her territory as opposed to you guys. There is a reason the Ooni has been junketeering a while now and every state owes her indigenous people the right to preservation of culture. And last I checked, it is not unconstitutional to do this. Lagos does not need to become a country before making moves to preserve the ways of her people. If you ask me, now is the best time even. If you aren't interested in the Yoruba language, then you have no business getting education, from primary level to secondary and even tertiary (for those dreaming of getting into LASU). |
Efewestern:If you ask me, I'd say the law is needed. Beyond the 'we own 95% of Lagos' chant, we should also understand that this is a state with a history, a people and a culture, regardless of whether or not it accommodates others. More so, the institution here is governed by the state and not the federal government. Probably there is a need to resuscitate the dying consciousness of the Yoruba attitude in many educated folks, which is true and needed, or that it is an act to curb the impunity of a certain people who believe Lagos belong to them just because her people welcomed them with open arms. And as much as we criticise Lagos for this move I'd be pleased to tell you that it is insanely found in the North and South East. Personally, I see it as an advantage to be bilingual. Although I already am, I believe it would be an opportunity for non Lagosian to deeply root themselves in its tradition. It is high time owners call the shot. Let them beat the drums of consciousness to the hearing of those who care to hear. |

LaudableXX:Here's my personal assessment of the the Igbos: they are a fascinating people to study and are quite deeply rooted in culture. Largely dogmatic in nature, an Igbo man would never question the practice of his forbears, except he embraces a new religion and remains staunch at it. His fellow, rather than correct or point out his wrong to him, would prefer to classify him as different for his weird behaviour and would readily describe him with the behaviour. This is why the social class system and cannibalism (in some parts) can hardly be questioned and outrightly challenged. And instead of correct or reform these practices, others would tell you you cannot choose a partner from these places because they are either social misfits or freaks of nature. Education is not really enough to challenge cultural beliefs in Igbo land. For a people deeply rooted in culture and its beliefs, it is quite hard to totally put an end to these practices. |
LaudableXX:In Imo State, three classes of individuals exist. These are the “free born” (Diala), the enslaved outcasts (Osu, Ohu or Oru) and Ume (those prone-to-die). https://www.google.com.ng/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/osu-caste-system-dead-myth-reality/amp/ I got wind of the Ume recently during a session at the office. I find it quite fascinating but haven't gotten sound materials to read on it. |
LaudableXX:I think it is sickening and hypocritical because Igbos are culturally inclined and judgemental St the same time. You deny people the joy of being with themselves simply because some criminal elements among you call a fellow human slave and unworthy of social interaction with his peers because the others are freeborn. You need to have a friend who is affected directly before you would understand the horror of this horrible practice. Social interactions between the three classes of people in Igboland is still very much alive, as much as they would want to claim that they have evolved and outgrown these practices. |
Odingo1:'You think'? It's so sad you don't even understand the heatmap of your people's practices. |
chukzyfcbb:Thread! |
kennygee:A friend's partner was rejected by her parents in December because the said guy, though from Anambra, is an Osu. The noise often times is that it has been abolished but it is far from the truth in reality. |
Top scorers Champions League 2017/18 Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid 9 Harry Kane, Tottenham 7 Roberto Firmino, Liverpool 6 Neymar, PSG 6 Edinson Cavani, PSG 6 Wissam Ben Yedder, Sevilla 6 Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool 5 Vincent Abouakar, FC Porto 5 |
Opta stats PSG have eliminated Real Madrid in their two previous knockout encounters (1992/93 UEFA Cup, 1993/94 Cup Winners Cup), both times in the quarter-finals. Under Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid have won 10 of their 14 Champions League knockout games (D2 L2), lifting the trophy twice in as many seasons. As part of this run, they've won all six of their games at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid have reached the semi-finals in each of the last seven Champions League campaigns, also a record run in the history of the competition. Last season, Real Madrid became the first team since Inter Milan in 2010 to win the Champions League after having finished second in their group. PSG scored 25 goals in this season's group stages, a record in the group phase of the competition. |
Team News Real Madrid will be without full-back Dani Carvajal through suspension, meaning Raphael Varane could play on the right of defence with Nacho partnering Sergio Ramos in the centre. Jesus Vallejo and Dani Ceballos are also set to miss out through injury while Zidane will have to make a call on whether to start Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo as a front three. Paris Saint-Germain head coach Unai Emery has left Thiago Motta out of the squad heading for the Spanish capital. Former Real midfielder Lassana Diarra is set to start in his place behind the star-studded front three of Neymar, Cavani and Kylian Mbappe. |
willjoe:It's just hours away. Why don't you just sit back and see how everything unfolds ![]() |
GIBT:No, we don't believe in the man Valentine, let alone in sainthood. Today's celebration has nothing to do with the saint (in people's mind). It is all about PHILEO. |
Ogashub:Catholic faithful, you should understand that a typical Nigerian does not concern himself or herself with St. Valentine whose acts we celebrate today. As a matter of fact, the definition of Valentine's day around the world does not reflect the deeds of St. Valentine as its meaning as long been lost. What we celebrate now is not even affiliated with religion or denomination because it is celebrated by people of various belief system, tribe and creed. The modern day St. Valentine's day is popularly known as 'Lover's day', and last I checked, this is far from the origin of the day. If the celebration of Valentine's day is affiliated with religion, I strongly believe the volume of lovers and sex acts committed on this day won't be as much as this. I am not sure your pepper soup logic applies here. |
Greatzeus:Yes, it can. One of the reasons why Internet speed slows down is the absence of strong network signals. A network booster is capable of optimizing your signal strength which would in turn impact your Internet/data. However, a booster might not save you if the closest Base station to you only has 2G on it. At the most, you would get a strong 2G signal which could still be slow for Internet use. |
gcof:You're welcome. One of the reasons you're getting to know about it today is because it is not available to all. Boosters are installed on premises of organizations that generate high revenues for telcos. They are mostly attached to the ceiling and often times look like fire alarms, save for the absence of open spaces in them. |
HungerBAD:Ose, haven't heard from you and it seems you're barely available even. |
The NCC seem confused because it is near impossible for an individual to get a booster and have it latch on to the network of his or her choice without getting help from the network guys. There are standard procedures for getting boosters and it is never given to an individual. Boosters are not like Mi-Fis that one can carry around. |
gcof:It is a device installed within a house, structure or building to further boost the strength of a particular telecommunication signal. The essence is to serve High Value Customers, who though love the telco operator, but are restricted to using certain services such as data and voice. |
OtemAtum:There are principles for just about every good thing in the Scripture and that of success isn't exempted. The last time I checked, one of the function of 'this spirit that breeds laziness' is to remind you of the things you have read. Should anyone fast and pray over academic success, then chances are that the person might get into trouble because that is a wrong application. You don't sing a burial song at wedding and expect everything/everyone to stay or act normal. |
chemystery:If you want to tell lies, be sure not to lose the humanity in you while at it. |
Amedak:It is not just about the good qualities. While we don't expect you to list her other side, it all comes down to coping with the other side. You are seeing these things because it is either she wants you to see these ones or that your relationship is quite new. Either way, the typical African mentality would kick in at some point. You would feel being the man should put you in the pilot seat while being the older one should put her there, save she belongs to the fewer class of calm, collected and matured (deep down). |
HungerBAD:Thank you, Okpako. |
DocHMD:Okra is an English name. |
frankdoz24:I hope you know there is a reason Asaba was made the state capital? |
Goddygee:They want oil. Isn't it obvious? |
These people have started again. |
Firefire:And what would you say Nigerians achieved in its 16-year rule? @ the emboldened, the joke is on you. I don't play partisan politics. The earlier you wake up to smell the coffee, the sooner you would realise that the PDP is no good for Nigeria, just as the APC. |
Firefire:This is not political in any way. That APC is not a disaster does not mean we have an option in the PDP. You just don't seem to get it because you are only interested in getting the job you lost. |

But isn't it ridiculous that in this century where knowledge has increased, technology has abounded and innovation keeps unfolding almost on a daily basis, the minds of men are still so small that they scorn and discriminate against fellow human beings like themselves, based on archaic, superstitious, irrational beliefs??!
Their prophet Nnamdi Kanu deliberately ignored this issue, when he was in their midst....
