The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Monday said the police have powers to sack any female officers who become pregnant while unmarried.
Justice Inyang Ekwo said the women were already aware of police regulations against getting pregnant out-of-wedlock before joining the service.
The suit was initiated by the Nigerian Bar Association after a female officer in Ekiti, Omolola Olajide, was fired in January 2021 for being pregnant without a spouse.
The NBA said the police action violated constitutional rights against discrimination, but the judge disagreed.
Mr Ekwo said Sections 126 and 127 of police regulations spelt out to women prior to enlisting in service.
The judge said 126 gives married women maternity leave; while Section 127 recommended dismissal for any woman who becomes pregnant without a legal husband.

Whatever the case, one of two things needs to be addressed properly—Tinubu’s health or the rumours of Tinubu’s health.
A person’s health is a personal issue as long as that person’s health does not impede the interest of his country or the well being of its system and people. We all saw how President Yar’adua’s health crisis led to a dirty power tussle in the villa, put Nigeria in a state of uncertainty as to who was in charge of the country and created a lot of tension. President Buhari has been away from the country for over 300 days at least, to attend to his health, mostly in London. Anyone’s health could fail at any point in time but a person running for president should not already be showing signs of what could potentially be a serious ailment that could detract from his governance if he were to become president.
Understandably, Tinubu is keen to push on and run for president. The time seems right. The presidency might be rotating south, his party, one which he helped form and in which he has great power is in charge of the government and the opposition PDP is a scattered force. If Tinubu clears the initial hurdles within his party, it is likely he would be coasting to the presidency. It is tempting.
But should any man’s ambition, no matter how long it has been incubating, be pursued at the risk of stagnating his country?
Tinubu, like the Nigeria Police, especially with regard to Kyari, should not wait until all semblance of dignity is lost, to dedicate time to address their problems. Nigeria has suffered a lot. And the mission to salvage it, which must begin in earnest, should not come secondary to a powerful individual’s aspiration. Sometimes, if you love something —a person, a thing, a country—enough, you will know when to let it soar. A sick president clinging to the scrawny neck of a long-abused nation seeking to crawl, toddle and perhaps someday fly, is neither love nor patriotism. It is sabotage.
I wish Tinubu good health, and a long life. I hope whatever he decides, he puts the interest of the country first. As for Mr Kyari, well…he has, as the British would say, copped it already.
For the rest of us, may we not soil our clothes in the village square at the dawn of our finest hour.
Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) says 150 women and girls were killed for ritual purposes between January 2018 and December 2021.
In a recent report, PIND said that the upsurge in targeted killings of women and girls for ritual purposes occurred in Cross River, Delta and Imo.
TheCable had reported how young people use social media to seek traditional charms, mystical powers and even ritual killings in quest of money.
The NGO said the prevailing situation is driven by a growing demand for human body parts for money-making.
It added that the trend endangers the safety and security of women and girls.
“According to data, over 150 incidents of ritual-related killings were reported in the Niger Delta between January 2018 and December 2021,” the report reads.
“Recent incidents also indicate an upsurge in targeted killings of women and girls for ritual purposes in the region, particularly in Cross River, Delta and Imo state.
“In January 2022, for example, more than 10 girls were reportedly killed for rituals in Ogoja town, Cross River state.
“The growing prevalence of targeted killings of women and girls for rituals is a serious threat to human security.
“The prevailing situation, which is seemingly driven by a growing demand for human body parts for money-making occult rituals, has the potential to reinforce harmful cultural beliefs and practices that could endanger the safety and security of women and girls.”
PIND said that if this is not addressed, it could have “far-reaching” socio-economic and political repercussions at the state and regional levels.
It also recommended that “stakeholders should work with relevant government agencies, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to address the underlying drivers and develop appropriate punitive and preventive measures to mitigate the situation”.
Deji Adeyanju, the convener of Concerned Nigerian, has highlighted why President Muhammadu Buhari may not prefer Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to succeed him in 2023.
Adeyanju said Buhari may not support Tinubu’s presidential ambition due to his alleged corrupt nature.
Speaking exclusively with DAILY POST, the Abuja-based rights activist was reacting to Buhari’s recent mark that he would not reveal his preferred presidential candidate.
The President had said his preferred candidate may be killed if he reveals him.
However, Adeyanju said Buhari might not look in Tinubu’s direction because he could cripple Nigeria financially.
According to Adeyanju, “I don’t think Tinubu or Osinbajo would be Buhari’s preferred candidate because I have studied him for a very long time now, and I can tell you that I have been able to predict almost all Buhari’s move even before he became President.
“He has done majority of the things I predicted and even exceeded my predictions. I don’t think he would support either of them, and these are my reasons.
“For Asiwaju, Tinubu is too blatantly corrupt for Buhari to support him. This is somebody with no known source of income and is richer than Lagos, Osun, and many states in the Southwest; if you give somebody like that presidential power, he would completely cripple the country financially.
“Asiwaju has an inordinate love for material things and accumulation of wealth. You can say anything against Buhari, but he is not that kind of person; Buhari is not that vein; there is still that level of decency in him.
“Buhari is not that type of person that would go and buy or accumulate properties in Lagos or Abuja in hundreds, so those are features in Tinubu that could make Buhari not likely to be inclined to handing over a whole country to him.”
Adeyanju said Buhari might not forgive Osinbajo for some remarks he allegedly made while he was undergoing medical attention in London in 2017.
The activist said reports that Osinbajo claimed that the President might never return alive may count against him because Buhari does not forgive.
“For Osinbajo, there have been a lot of reports that when the President was sick, he was among those who made a remark that he may not make it back and that he was already plotting and meeting people who would become his Vice President.
“And the Buhari we know does not forgive, neither does he forget things like that. There are insinuations that the President has not forgiven him for such remarks that he was labeled to have said. Osinbajo is not like to get the President’s nod.
“I think that this President is likely to look towards Southsouth, though I’m not in the position to know his mind, but I don’t think he would support Tinubu or Osinbajo,” he said.
The Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA) has announced the death of another Nigerian in South Africa, following a vicious attack on him in his shop.
The NUSA president Collins Mgbo announced the death of Mr Nicholas John in a statement issued from South Africa on Thursday.
Mr John, an Ogun indigene, was attacked by a mob at his shop in Kimberly in South Africa’s Northern Cape on February 12.
South Africa has continued to be a graveyard for many young Nigerians. Records showed that at least 128 Nigerians had been killed since 2019.
On December 12, Olusola Solarin was killed by hoodlums, who attacked him and collected his money.
Mr Mgbo disclosed that Mr John, the latest victim, was married to a South African woman who was delivered of a baby barely three months ago.
On the circumstances that led to Mr John’s death on February 15, the NUSA president disclosed that on February 11, the Nigerian was attacked by a South African gang for buying a stolen laptop.
“He was beaten alongside his friends, who they believed were accomplices, while the South African criminal, who stole the laptop and sold it to John, was left unharmed,” he explained.
The NUSA president added that Mr John had battled to survive at an intensive care unit in Kimberley Hospital, where he died.
Mr Mgbo further explained that the deceased had bought a stolen laptop from a South African. The owner of the stolen laptop apprehended the South African who stole the laptop, and he took them to the Nigerian, who had bought the stolen laptop.
“The Nigerian who bought the laptop had apparently sold it to another Nigerian. They asked him to call the Nigerian he sold it to, and he did, but when he arrived, he told them that he didn’t have the laptop anymore but agreed to pay them for it,” added Mr Mgbo. “The owner of the laptop agreed, but the owner came with a group which wanted to rob John of his phones, but he resisted, and that was when they beat him to a comatose state and left him to die.”
According to Mr Mgbo, other Nigerians at the scene called an ambulance and took Mr John to the hospital, but they were informed by the medical doctor at the hospital that his brain was damaged and that he might not make it.

An erstwhile presidential aspirant, Ahmed Buhari has endorsed former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim for the Presidency in 2023.
Buhari said Anyim is the perfect person to lead Nigeria in 2023, considering his records in the red chamber.
He noted that Anyim was able to stabilize the National Assembly when he was the Senate President.
Buhari spoke on Arise TV’s Morning Show while advocating for a Nigerian President of Southeast extraction.
He noted that the southeast remains the only region in the country that is yet to produce a president since 1999.
“Southeast is the only zone in the entire south that has not produced the president of Nigeria since the advent of Democracy in 1999.
“But among all of them that have indicated interest in the presidency from the southeast, if given the opportunity to choose, Anyim stands out,” he said.
Most political stakeholders have been agitating for the southeast to produce the country’s next president.

In the video shared by a Facebook user, Evangeline Nwakamma, the soldier identified as Linda Onuoha was seen assaulting the old woman and threatening to kill her.
According to Nwakamma, the incident happened in the Oboama Ezinihitte Mbaise area of the state.

It's not Bola Tinubu that elected Buhari. This is a myth that has been sold in the media, but it is not true at all! If Bola Tinubu could elect anyone, he would have done it in 2011 with Atiku.
Buhari was elected because the NewPDP block broke out of PDP in 2014 and effectively rendered the party defeated. If the newPDP block had not broken away, along with the North vowing to return to power by all means necessary, a thousand Bola Tinubus would never have been able to elect Buhari. The internal betrayal of GEJ was so bad that even Muazu, his own chairman, was working against him and this was down to one thing; the North wanted to return to power. Bola Tinubu was a sectional leader in 2013/2014, whose only influence was in the SW.
He had no national spread or appeal. He couldn't have elected a president in Nigeria.Not even with a thousand bullion vans. OBJ, Abdusalam, Atiku, Saraki, and all the other major players, who broke away from PDP in 2014, practically killed it at the time.
That was why this same group, took over the legislative arm in 2015 and Tinubu was left in the cold. Tinubu's ability to elect a president on his own is one of those myths that many have bought that is quite laughable.
The only reason the North doesn't bother to debunk this false narrative is because they are smart enough to realize that the alternative narrative is that they betrayed GEJ, and they don't want that narrative out there in the open.

Tinubu is grossly overrated by the media hype. The last time Tinubu put this his self delusional hype to test, he sent a recorded video message to Edo State indigenes to support Ize Iyamu for governorship election. What was the result of that move? It cost Ize Iyamu the election. In which he lost woefully.
It was so bad that it created a winning slogan for Obaseki, "Edo no be Lagos!". Tinubu's influence on Nigeria's election is a myth. Even Tinubu's influence on Lagos elections is also a myth.
If it were not a myth, he wouldn't require the use of thugs during Lagos elections. In the last presidential elections, thugs had to go around disrupting elections in perceived PDP strongholds. A man who has Lagos support like he claims won't require that to win elections.
Most elections in Lagos are won by slim margins. Buhari won GEJ in Lagos in 2015 by a slim margin, even after all the manipulations and thuggery. Also, nobody has the means or ability to bribe the whole of Nigeria to win a presidential candidate election. That is another myth.
Nigeria's presidential elections are not determined by money but by religious, tribal and sectional sentiments.
Popular activist and Bring Back Our Girls campaigner, Mrs. Aisha Yesufu, has reminded EndSARS protesters that their lives are not better than that of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, or the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN.
Mrs. Yesufu believes that all Nigerian lives matter and that unlawful and indiscriminate killings must be condemned no matter who is involved.
The reported killing of members of IPOB in the South East and the alleged massacre of Shiites in Kaduna State by security forces have not received half of the attention given to the shooting and killing of armless protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos State on October 20, 2020, by security men believed to be soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
A committee of investigation set up by the Lagos State Government has since indicted the army and police of killing some of the innocent youths who were protesting against police brutality and calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.
But Aisha noted that some politicians, especially those in the opposition, such as a former Senate President, are jumping into the EndSARS debate while they were in office when IPOB and Shiites members were killed but refused to speak up.

Finland-based Biafran agitator and self-styled Nnamdi Kanu's disciple, Simon Ekpa, has announced the expulsion of IPOB's national coordinator, Anthony Obasi, from the group.
Mr. Obasi was accused by Mr. Ekpa of corruption, insubordination among other infractions.
This is coming admist rising infighting between IPOB led by the Directorate of State (DOS) and IPOB Autopilot, led by Mr. Simon Ekpa, who's now known as ESN.
Announcing the expulsion, Ekpa, who's now fully in charge of IPOB Finland, revealed that more expulsions should be expected as he's on a mission of evicting all anti-Autopiloters, including IPOB DOS, from the group. According to Ekpa, "The problem of IPOB worldwide started from Finland and the solution has also come from Finland. Now encourage other unit around the world to follow up by expelling any criminal coordinator or national coordinator and take charge of the movement, stand by the truth @real_IpobDOS"
Meanwhile, thousands of IPOB Autopiloters have taken to social media to celebrate their victory. According to Uwaezuoke Obinna, the expulsion is "A good step in a right direction.
