Sometimes I question whether EndSARS was actually a good thing, and not because of the disruption it caused in so many lives.
Looks to my eyes that political discourse in Nigeria has been poisoned by the ghost of that thing. Maybe it came too soon.
Twitter is influential and it sets some agenda for what happens offline, but it is not *YET* the primary location for political engagement.
Unfortunately because EndSARS started from Twitter and the hapless Buhari govt banned Twitter, this has exaggerated its importance.
This false importance has created thousands of people who think they have figured out Nigerian politics because they went out to protest for 2 weeks and scared the government enough to reprise Tianenmen Square.
Now you can't tell them anything because "they took part in EndSARS"
Constitutionally, the IGP is superior to the Governor of a State. Aside that the IGP is an appointee of the President, the Governors have no power to give directive to the IGP. The only police officer the Governor may give directive to is the Commissioner of Police of that state and compliance with this directive is subject to being referred to the President or the Minister appointed in that regard. Section 215(4) is very clear on this point.
The IGP is far superior to a Commissioner of Police and cannot take orders or directive from a Governor simply because the Governor is the Chief Security Officer of the State. The power of IGP covers the entire Federation unlike the Governor. Being a CSO is merely ceremonial and there's no way the President or Minister will decide on whether the Commissioner of Police should comply with the directive of the Governor without consulting with the Inspector General of Police.
Athird monarch from Yoruba land has joined his ancestors on Tuesday.
The deceased monarch is the Olupo of Olupona, Oba Emmanuel Onaolapo Oyebanji.
Olupona is the headquarters of Ayedire South Local Development Area of Osun State.
The news comes barely 24 hours after it was reported that the father of Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former deputy governor of Osun State and two-time lawmaker representing Osun East Senatorial District, Oba David Omisore, the Olu of Olode, passed on.
Oba Omisore turned 90 in July 2021.
Recall that on Sunday, Oba Saliu Adetunji, the Olubadan of Ibadan, died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The monarch, who was the 41st king of the ancient city, has been buried according to Islamic rites.
Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Pan Niger Delta Forum and the Tiv Nation have endorsed the quest by the South-East to produce the next president of Nigeria in 2023.
The groups demanded restructuring before the 2023 general election in order to guarantee its continued co-existence as one country.
Their position was made known during the launch of Power Shift Movement and Forty Million Ballots Movement in Awka, Anambra State, which was hosted by the President of Youths Off the Street Initiative, Kennedy Iyere.
Secretary-General of Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, who was represented by leader of Yoruba nation self-determination group, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, said the group was in support of the South-East producing the next president.
He said, “Southern presidency is a means to an end. It is not something to celebrate because even if we have a Southern president, you cannot have one more powerful than Obasanjo and nothing is being done.The fundamental thing is restructuring. But in the meantime, let those who have not tasted it, let them have it.”
He maintained that the Yoruba nation was not happy that Igbo people were not coming out to declare their interest for the position even when people of Southern Nigeria have declared support for them.
“We hear people from the South-West want to be president, and even in the North which we have said has had enough for now; they want to be president. I have not seen men from the South-East come out and say that they want to be president. It is not a matter of newspapers or reeling out statistics. It is a question of let us see these men. If you don’t take your destiny in your hand politically, it will continue to be statistics on the pages of the newspaper."
Commenting on restructuring, he stated that, “Nigeria must be restructured between now and the 2023 election. This country cannot afford to be run as a unitary state when we are actually a federal state.
"Restructuring, from our own point of view, is to invent or recreate the constitution or the fundamental covenant of our existence which we were when Awolowo on one side, Zik on one side and Ahmadu Bello on one side, came together. Nigeria was by negotiation and restructuring must continue. If you eat and I don’t eat, there can never be peace.
"So, our position is that towards 2023, let our leaders be realistic enough to ensure that the Nigerian state is restructured. The 1999 constitution is dangerously skewed against the Igbo man.”
Also, leader of PANDEF, Chief Edwin Clark, represented by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Robinson, said the Niger Delta was in support of the South-East producing the successor to President Buhari but asked that the Igbo take the lead.
“For PANDEF, we stand for power shift to Southern Nigeria. Igbo people deserve the presidency of Nigeria. But it must go beyond deserving it. You must work for it. You must reach out to other groups,” Clark said.
Leader of the Tiv, Chief Iorbee Ihagh, said his people have agreed that the presidency should go to South-East in particular.
He, however, said that if the Igbo failed to come out and lead the movement, Tiv people may declare for the post.

Three Kwankwasiya scholars, Drs Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Tukur Abdulkadir Sulaiman, and Abdullahi Yusuf, have been listed among the top 2% most-cited scientists in the world.
The list, published in August 2021, was compiled by a team of researchers ed by Prof. John Loannidis at the Stanford University, California.
Using verifiable data derived from the SCOPUS database, Mr Loannidis’ team applied algorithms that take into consideration number of non-self citations, h-index, co-authorship, first authorship and a composite indicator to identify researchers whose scholarly works were most cited by their peers.
The list includes over 100,000 researchers selected among more than 8 million scientist in 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields across the globe.
I think Shola's ministry is good for society. He's encouraging women to be financially independent & encouraging men to treat women as financial equals, which is in line with feminism. I think he goes too far with the alpha male stuff but overall, he is doing more good than harm.
A fresh crisis has rocked the Yoruba Nation agitation group led by Prof Banji Akintoye as Pelumi Olajengbesi, one of the Nigerian lawyers of self-determination campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, resigned on Sunday.
Olajengbesi had faulted the threat by Akintoye that no governorship election would hold in Ekiti and Osun States later this year.
The 86-year-old don, in his 2022 New Year message, had said, “Among most Yoruba self-determination advocates worldwide, the determination exists and is growing that there shall be no State Governorship and House of Assembly election in our homeland in 2022. The next election that we Yoruba people will engage in will be the first election in our own new country.”
Reacting, however, in an earlier statement, Olajengbesi said Akintoye wasn’t speaking for all Yoruba people of South-West Nigeria, noting that voting remained a human right.
Akintoye’s Ilana Oodua group subsequently disowned Olajengbesi in a statement, saying he was not speaking for Igboho and accusing the lawyer of trying to please the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
Olajengbesi later in a statement on Sunday made available to The PUNCH, announced his resignation from Igboho’s legal team.
The lawyer said, “This is to officially announce my resignation as counsel involved further in any matter relating to Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho and the Yoruba Nation Agitators.
“As a firm, we are satisfied with our little best in contributing to providing legal solutions and representations to Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) and associated Yoruba Nation Agitators as far as ensuring the protection and enforcement of their rights in this matter.
“We were able to secure the release of 12 persons brutally and unlawfully arrested by the State Security Service, and also secured the release of an innocent herbalist equally unlawfully arrested and detained by the SSS.
“We have two persons with ongoing terrorism trials at the Federal High Court and our firm will dutifully continue and close the trial having commenced their matter.
“While thanking everyone, particularly Chief Yomi Aliyu SAN for the opportunity, and freehand service, Dr. Olasupo Ojo for his fair leadership and Chief Femi Falana for allowing his industry to be tapped and for the moral support, I most respectfully wish to now step aside.
“I have stated ab initio that the scope of my work will only be within the purview of my professional duty as a lawyer to Sunday Igboho and his aides. I am a strong believer in constitutional democracy, civil liberty and human rights which includes the right to self-determination but I am not a Yoruba nation agitator nor a member of any like organization.
“My reaction to Prof. Akintoye was not to undermine the Yoruba struggle but is based on my personal convictions which I am entitled to. I do hope my friends in the struggle will allow me enjoy the benefit of my right to such a choice as a person of thought and conscience.”
For about six months, 49-year-old Igboho has been in detention in neighbouring Benin Republic since his arrest around 8pm on July 19, 2021 at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou. Also, Akintoye has since fled Nigeria after he suspected that the Buhari regime plotted his arrest, saying he was in Benin Republic to secure the release of Igboho.
Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) is a stalwart in the murky terrain of Nigerian politics. Sitting on the gilded stool of an elder statesman, politicians pander to him and grovel for his attention. At the turn of each election cycle, his Hilltop mansion on the outskirts of Minna, Niger state, becomes something of a “political Mecca” where entourages of power-seeking politicians visit on ”pilgrimage” just to include their names in coveted headlines that read “IBB endorses…” Almost kingmaker-like, they mill around him for recognition, and he rarely disappoints them.
On Thursday, he anointed another politician for the seat of president come 2023. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was the individual he endorsed, describing him as the kind of good man that Nigeria needs to run smoothly. IBB gave the recognition after members of Osinbajo Grassroots Organisation (OGO) visited him at his abode in Niger state.
For an elder statesman like IBB to speak so glowingly about an individual it should be sacred and impactful, yet it felt almost pedestrian. Because of the former military dictator’s history of almost always anointing any politician that deems him prestigious enough to pay homage.
Here are some presidential aspirants who have been endorsed by IBB:
“RIBADU, NIGERIA NEEDS TO TURN HER FORTUNE AROUND”
Ahead of the 2011 presidential election, IBB backed the return of the presidency to the north, following the demise of Umaru Yar’Adua while in office. He claimed Goodluck Jonathan, who was seeking re-election after finishing his late principal’s tenure, should not run because the ticket belonged to Yar’Adua and the north, by extension.
Hence, he endorsed the candidature of Nuhu Ribadu and Fola Adeola of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after the duo visited him at his home in Minna.
He described the candidates as “the pair that the country needs to turn her fortune around”.
“I endorse generational change, which Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu and Alhaji Fola Adeola stand for. I have strong faith in them, and I believe they can deliver the goods,” IBB had said.
“Someone asked me who my candidate is, and I analysed the situation. The fact is that the country needs people of your age (young) to take over the leadership of the country.
“I believe we have to allow generational change, which the ACN candidate represents. That is why; I endorsed and supported Alhaji Ribadu and Alhaji Fola. We have faith in them and we have hope in them.”
ENDORSED BOTH BUHARI AND JONATHAN IN 2015
With a few days to the 2015 presidential election, a visit by Muhammadu Buhari, then-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), spurred IBB to endorse the former’s ambition.
Osinbajo, the then-presidential running mate of the APC, was first to announce the claim in a tweet, saying, “General Babangida has thrown his weight behind General Buhari. He says Buhari is the right man to move Nigeria forward”.
Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west senatorial district and then APC member, re-echoed Osinbajo’s claims.
“IBB endorses Buhari, IBB says ‘We will all support Buhari to be president,’” he wrote.
In a shocking twist of events, a couple of weeks later, IBB also slammed his seal of approval on Jonathan, who was seeking re-election to the office of the president.
He said Nigeria is in “safe hands” with Jonathan as the president.
“I was touched when you visited me in Germany after nine hours of surgery, and you came again to visit me after I returned to see how I am faring,” the former head of state said.
“You have made a very good decision to visit Minna during your presidential campaign because Minna is known for producing presidents, beginning with your namesake President Azikiwe, who was born in Zungeru.
“And since then, most of the presidents of Nigeria have one thing or the other, they come here to ask for blessing, and I will offer this blessing to you, Mr President.
“When we were doing nocturnal activities for the PDP, this house held several meetings.
“My family and I are proud of this. I commend the party for being very strong.
“I see in PDP a party, an organisation devoid of religion, division. You have shown leadership; even when others break up, you have remained strong.
“Jonathan and I share a common passion which is that Nigeria remains strong, united and indivisible. I wish you well. Nigeria under Jonathan is in safe hands.”
MET WITH ATIKU IN 2017
In December 2017, IBB received Atiku Abubakar, then an aspirant for the 2019 presidential election, at his abode. After a closed-door meeting, several accounts of the meeting rented the media.
But Kassim Afegbua, spokesperson to the former military dictator, revealed that his principal had “a very useful political discussion”.
“Number one, IBB will not discourage anyone from seeking office. IBB will encourage anyone to seek election,” Afegbua had said.
”They had a very useful political discussion. IBB also has a good relationship with Atiku. It’s not good to play politics with the relationship of people.”
BACKED SARAKI AHEAD OF 2019 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
After the “very useful political discussion” with Atiku, IBB then hosted Bukola Saraki, then president of the senate and a presidential hopeful, in his abode and declared he was “convinced that you have what it takes to be president”.
He praised the former Kwara state governor as “more than prepared for the office” due to his political experience.
“You are much more than prepared because you have been a governor in a state, a legislator and a Senator,” Babangida said.
“You have been holding the senate for the past three years very well, and the senate has been working very well under you. I’m, therefore, convinced that you have what it takes to be president.”
“You spoke of three important things that are very dear to me and those of us who fought to keep this country together, the issues which are unity, economic development and security.”
ENDORSED ALL PDP PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS FOR 2019 ELECTION
In 2018, as the race for the PDP presidential ticket approached a crescendo amongst aspirants, a succession of them visited IBB to feather their ambitious caps, and the former military dictator was generous enough to endorse all of them.
Aminu Tambuwwal, governor of Sokoto, was given IBB’s “blessings” to contest the party’s ticket and, by extension, Nigeria’s presidency.
“I am very proud that you belong to the generation that wants to keep Nigeria as one. You have a good team to keep that; I have no doubt that Nigerians will give you the opportunity to put these good ideas for the good of the country. You know the country. You understand the challenges of the country. I trust you will work based on your conviction for this country. You have my blessings, and I will keep monitoring to ensure you don’t deviate,” IBB had said.
Taminu Turaki, the former minister of special duties, visited Babangida on July 17, 2018. Like Tambuwal, Turaki solicited the support of the former military leader, saying he has all that is needed to improve the country.
During the visit, Babangida endorsed him while saying the agenda of the aspirant is capable of transforming the country.
“I am endorsing you because your road map can lead Nigeria to prosperity,” he had said.
“We were taught in the military that the unity of Nigeria must not be compromised; the programmes in your agenda are capable of transforming Nigeria. From your agenda, I believe you mean well for this country. I think if you are given the chance, Nigeria will witness tremendous development.
“Even though I have adopted you and you emerge as the president, I will follow you up so that if you derail, I will remind you of your promises.”
Ahmed Markarfi, former governor of Kaduna state, also paid a visit to Babangida at his residence in Minna on August 4, 2018. During the visit, Makarfi highlighted some of his plans to deal with the country’s challenges.
The former military dictator said Makarfi restored his hope of a new Nigeria, adding that the ex-governor has his blessings.
“I was almost losing hope in the country. As a military man, I wouldn’t. But having heard from the distinguished senator, I have become more enlightened and emboldened to say we have hope in Nigeria,” he had said.
“OSINBAJO, THE KIND OF GOOD MAN NIGERIA NEEDS TO RUN SMOOTHLY”
After the meeting with OGO on Thursday, IBB described Osinbajo as someone he respects because he has good intentions for the country.
He added that Nigeria needs a leader like Osinbajo to run the country.
“I know the vice-president very well. He’s a good man. I have spoken with him a couple of times, and I respect him. He is a good man, and we need good men to run this country — somebody you can learn from, somebody you share a common conviction with, and he has this passion for this great country,” Babangida said.
Earlier today, I called on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to contest for president in the 2023 January elections and to declare on the platform of the People's Democratic Party and I did that willingly, wholeheartedly and this is my choice. It's my belief. I supported him in 2019 and I still support him now. This is a man that I know personally.
And the reason why I am doing this video is that some people have gone on my social media profiles and they're saying they can't believe this is me or that my profiles were hacked, no, no, no. My profiles were not hacked. To use a Nigerian parlance, I spoke with my full chest. I believe and I support this man. I believe in what he's doing.
You know, some people have drawn my attention to the fact that Chile just elected a 35-year old man. Listen, Nigeria is not Chile. Nigeria is not Chile. And I will say it one more time, Nigeria is not Chile. We have our own unique challenges in Nigeria. One of these challenges is that Nigeria has a very, very high unemployment rate. So you see that we're having insecurity all over Nigeria. The reason why is because we have a very high youth unemployment.
Alhaji Abubakar currently employs 50,000 people. He's paying them above minimum wage. This is a man that has consistently throughout his life shown that he knows how to create jobs. And that's what young Nigerian people need. They need jobs. You just don't want to elect a youth for a youth's sake - you want to elect somebody because somebody is young. Yahaya Bello is young, look at the disaster he is in Kogi State. So you are not going to say you want to elect somebody because somebody is young and you want to 'unelect' or you want to 'de-emphasize' somebody because he's older.
There are reasons why I support this man. The challenges that Nigeria is facing.
Muhammadu Buhari has actually destroyed or almost destroyed the fabric of our unity. So we need a uniter. We need somebody that can make us one until our enemies are none. Look at the man, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar: very cosmopolitan, spent all of his working life in the South. Beginning from when he was 22 years old. He's being in the South. He's been working in the South. He met his wife in the South. He got married to his first wife in the South. This is a man who comes from a northern aristocratic background. This is a man who doesn't see people through the eyes of tribe or religion. So we need that kind of person to build unity in the country.
What's our other challenge? Our other challenge we have in Nigeria today is that we have a challenge of power. The man has brought out a plan of how to address power. He's brought out a plan of how to build modular refineries so that we can have petrol or fuel all over Nigeria. He's brought out a plan to build small... Just like what was done in Botswana and in the Philippines to build small power stations so that we're not dependent on just a central power station with a central grid. So the man has a plan. He has a plan. He's fit. He's shown ability to create jobs. Why will I not support him?
Name a young person currently, right now who has a plan that's better than this man's and I will leave him and I'll support that young person. Name a young person. I am a very practical person. I have looked at all the people around, all the people who have shown interest - the man has not even said he's not going to run and I am encouraging him to run. But I am looking at all the people who said they want to run.
Am I going to support Bola Tinubu? Bola Tinubu, a man who is so unintelligent that he went to Kano and was saying that they should employ 5 million Nigerian youths into the army and they feed them Cassava?
A man who we release photos of bullion vans leaving his house. Is that the kind of man you want me to go and support?
Look at what he said... Look at what his wife said about the Igbos in Lagos. "We don't trust you people again". Is that the kind of man?
We need somebody who can unite. Enough of all this identity and age politics - where is he from, how old is he. No. We want to know only one thing - is he capable? We don't want a NEPA bill certificate person again. We want someone who is capable.
The man just graduated from a university in Cambridge. You guys saw it. He went to further himself - he went to educate himself further. If you know somebody who is younger than him and who is better qualified than him, tell me, and I'll support that person.

Northern senators on Wednesday kicked against a proposed law for women empowerment in Nigeria, saying its content contradicts Islam and northern cultural values.
Senator Abiodun Olujimi of Ekiti has been pushing to get the bill through the parliament since 2016, but some senators have raised different concerns to get the bill shut down or at least returned to the initial stages.
Mrs Olujimi said the bill will “allow for the prohibition of all forms of discrimination against women and provide for the equality of all persons,” including people of determination in the society.
But some northern senators said the bill was not properly worded, especially its title that seeks equality rather than equity; while arguing strongly that it would contravene the tenets of Islam.
“This equality infringes on the Quran,” Abubakar Yusuf, representing Taraba Central Senatorial District, said at today’s plenary. “I will not support the passage of the bill until the word equality is removed. When you bring equality into it infringes on the Quran.”
In his argument, Aliyu Wammako, representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, said he will not support the bill as currently framed.
“When it comes to socio-cultural practices, it is wrong,” Mr Wamakko said. “When you talk of equity it is okay. When you talk of equality I will not support it.”
But Senator IIstifanus Gyang from Plateau North said the bill holds crucial elements to Nigeria’s social and economic development.
“Women have been at the receiving end of being excluded,” the senator said while expressing his support. “Women are entitled to equal opportunities. Being a woman is not being less human.”
Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the concerns of northern senators should be addressed before the bill could scale through.
Mrs Olujimi has faced relentless opposition since first proposing the bill in 2015. The bill suffered through the Eighth Assembly without passage, but she said her determination made her present the bill for consideration in the current Ninth Assembly.
In 2016, some senators rejected the bill, saying it would make women become lesbians and prostitutes. The argument was rejected by civic groups, who warned that failure to pass the bill could leave Nigeria behind amongst countries seeking to score better in global development indicators.
Despite security intimidation and “DSS warnings”, Kano activists have returned to the streets once again to protest the prevalence of insecurity in Northern Nigeria. These nationwide protests are being organised and led by women. @AishaYesufu #SecureNorth

You see this with IPOB supporters who insist that all Igbos should be pro-IPOB, must support their poverty-maximising weekly sit at home strikes, and must speak only good of Nnamdi Kanu.
The idea that each person has their own mind is alien to a lot of people who demand a sheepish unity of opinions.
Agboriotejoye: First of all, it's not true that Federal law "supersedes" state laws on the concurrent list. Each has their area of jurisdiction and hold for the area they control. The issue is that the VAT judgment has become a regional issue. Northern state governors have been crying since the judgment while the South has been rejoicing. So it is not the individual who questioned his Yorubaness that made it a tribal issue but the governors who turned it to a North vs South matter as usual. So you can't blame an ordinary man if he also looks at the issue from an angle of us vs them if the leaders can also look at it that way. May I ask. How come anything the South champions or demands is always opposed by the north? Endsars was mainly opposed by the north for example. Meanwhile same north asked for sharia and got it with a sitting southern president.

The guy who asked if Seun is Yoruba was obviously referring to the fact that the SW contributes the highest to VAT but does not get the highest returns from it. It's about fairness not bigotry. Except you mean the Niger Deltans are bigots for demanding for derivation from oil and gas proceeds. It's a natural law that a group of people should benefit from whatever resources nature has bestowed them with. So if Yorubas are demanding for a higher and fairer share of the VAT, it should be welcomed by all and supported. After all, in a federation as we claim to be, the federating bodies should be able to control their resources and utilize it as they see fit.
Read Seun's tweet again. HE MADE IT EXPLICITLY CLEAR THAT HE'S IN SUPPORT OF STATES COLLECTING VAT.. However, he's demanding to know the legal side since constitutionally, FG laws supersede State laws in the Concurrent List. He's NOT advocating the FG should collect it.
He further said it's "my view as a lay person" and I am open to correction.
So why question his "Yorubaness" instead of simply correcting his "lay opinion"? Why involve tribe? Why attack the person who said he's open to correction and ignore the subject matter?
