HI, (My reply in bold) megacontrol: Hello man, i want to start sand filling a land in preparation for building soon and will like to ask; 1. how much of the top soil (depth) has to be excavated before sand filling to avoid soil movements in future Not much, just ensure you remove all the bad soil i.e soil that has green growing on it, debris and rubbish dumped on the site, wood and all material that can decay, plastic etc - if you're not sure just remove about 100cm of top.
2. how long should the sand fill be left before the foundation commences About a year is perfect but if you don't have that much time, fill about 450mm high and compact mechanically (rammer) until you reach the required height ie (wet and rammer in layers)
3. any other tips to achieve solid foundation Get qualified men on the job, ensure adequate rebar spacing, use appropriate rebar (iron) and seek professional advice etc
recommended foundation type - raft location - swampy/waterlogged planned build - duplex (ground & first floors)
thanks GoodLuck |

Let me say this.. He's NOT an engineer for 2 reasons. 1. No Engr wld use pad foundation ie mat on waterlogged soil 2. Mat and pad foundation is for this type of soil. Can sm1 help with pics to guide our man here.. It's better to correct it now... Or u might spend millions later. This reply is for asids55 |

mufutau55: Can you explain further on this? What kind of maintenance does parapet requires? Thanks.
Hajji M. Parapets are walls above roof (i'm not referring to concrete facial which are popularly referred to as parapet but technically aren't) On the maintenance i was referring to = WATERPROOFING (FELTING SYSTEM), FLASHING AND CAPPING - in simple terms the point where the roof materials meet the block walls etc.. see pics attached.

asids55: hello house, what do you guys think of having two stair cases in a duplex built on half plot of land, and pls which roofing style is better I'll go with the first (black - Hip) roof - less maintenance cost on the long run........ 2 staircases ? - well, what we have are standards or minimum requirements - the minimum requirement is obviously 1 stairs but by choice and for other reasons (including security, functionality, choice) you can have 2, 3, or 4..... lexi28: Hi, saydfact. I have a sketch for a generator house, can you kindly look at it and give the required quantities of blocks, cement and all required to complete it? You can reach me on WhatsApp at 07036383449 and by email at lexezra@gmail.com. I've sent you mail to your advertised in mail and also a p.m here on the forum.
I hope to speak with you soon on certain other projects that will require your expertise. Its for a 2bedroom bungalow.
Thanks a lot. Foundation = 4.5 bags of cement Columns = 3 bags of cement 175mm thick German floor = 14 bags of cement 150mm thick concrete roofing = 10 bags of cement 150mm or 225mm Blocks = 370 pcs (L x B) Screen block = 14.76m2 / (L x B) = pcs of screen block needed i.e when you decide on the screen block to use, multiple its LxB and apply in the formula above eg if its 150mm x 150mm then = 14.76 / (0.15x0.15) = 14.76 / 0.0225 = 656 pcs. (for both screen wall and screen windows) Granite, Sand, Plaster sand etc are minimal - Buy the least you can afford eg 10 tonnes of each. Reinforcement Bars = Use 12mm all round.... or 16mm in columns if you can afford to... Goodluck. Good luck..... |

spyder880: 1. What's the likely cost of fitting a small elevator (say 1.2 metres sq) in a house with 5 floors in Nigeria?
2. Which are the leading companies in elevator installation and maintenance in Nigeria?
I just want to understand why the use of elevators is not widespread in the country. constant electricity is a major reason. if you cant keep the gen on for 24hrs, you don't consider using a lift - that is an outrageous cost in a public residential / low cost apartment. |

strip foundation is what i have chosen
pls i really need the estimate.
THANKS @adeyanwale5 why ask EgunMogaji for the quote when this was a free design I did for people on NL - offcourse you're free to use it, but respect my works enough to ask me for more details if u need it.... most NL wld confirm i've offered such services for free. BTW: You dont need an estimate, just read the post where you got the design from, i broke down major cost there. @Rubbiish, thanks man - you're a great guy.. adeyanwale5 see >> https://www.nairaland.com/3523256/how-build-comfortable-house-earning and https://www.nairaland.com/4191428/how-calculate-how-many-blocksfor your answers |

4gunners: The depth of the excavation for pad foundation will be determined by the structural engineer designing the foundation. The depth depends on so many factors such as the bearing capacity of the soil, size of the column, load the column is carrying etc. I guess this is a more technical answer... Thanks |

calculation: Please, I need to ask question concerning pad foundation. In pad foundation how do we determine the depth of excavation from natural ground level? Is it when the excavation get to hard soil level or there is factor that determine it. Thanks for your write up as it really help me to understand some stuff on building and design. Pad foundations are used on hard soil... (remember I said stabilization is needed if the soil is soft, at the end of stabilization, the soil becomes hard) Depth of pad foundation is usually between 900mm - 1500mm What matters most is the size of the pad I.e. Length and Breath and the reinforcement in it. Thanks |
