Which country has the best women’s football league?


France has the world’s highest-paying women’s football league, the United States continues to produce the premier women’s national team, and England’s top men’s clubs are putting money into women’s football. However, debating which country has the best women’s football league is up for debate. When it comes to the men’s game, it is easy to see which leagues are elite. In the women’s game, it isn’t quite so easy to tell.

Women’s football in Europe is seeing incredible growth. Europe’s leading women’s football nations have been playing catch-up with the US since the late 1980s and early 1990s. Money is being funneled into the women’s game in Europe like never before. Top clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea are putting funds into their women’s teams. There are even semi-pro and other pro sides popping up in the women’s game.

The money in France, Spain, and England is luring more of the world’s best female players to Europe. The US’s National Women’s Soccer League has seen a number of top stars, including Alex Morgan, have departed this autumn sometime ago. Morgan joined Tottenham Hotspur ladies due to the money available.

There is a common misconception, especially in American soccer circles, that the NWSL is the world’s leading female football league. The country’s national team is the reason for the misconception. However, the infrastructure of the NWSL pales in comparison to France and England, as does the salaries. The NWSL isn’t even the most competitive women’s league.

France’s Division 1 Feminine is considered the best league in the world and has produced seven-time Women’s UEFA Champions League winner Lyon. France paid the highest wages of any women’s league in 2017. The average player wage in 2017 was $49,782 per player. Meanwhile, players earned $43,730 in Germany, $35,355 in England and $27,054 in the USA’s NWSL on average that year.

The NWSL doesn’t attract a lot of foreign top players. Why? The salaries do not lure them. Many of the top domestic players earn money from the US Soccer as internationals. In contrast, France’s Division 1 Feminine has a few players earning six-figures.

At one time, there was a worry amongst NWSL clubs that they were running out of American-produced players. Just a few years ago, players were retiring from pro soccer. The reason for a rash of players retiring before the age of 25 was due to the pay. In 2015, the NWSL’s league minimum salary was $6,842.

In 2020, the NWSL minimum salary was much better, but still lower than what players make in Europe. The minimum for 2020 was $20,000 but the max salary was just $50,000. Some of the elite players made more through sponsorships and money paid to them from US Soccer. However, the likes of Morgan and others can play in Europe and earn far more.

The idea that the US has the best women’s league is false. Until the NWSL pays more money to its players, it is unlikely to lure top foreign players. It is also likely to lose more players and strengthen other leagues in the short-term.

So which league is better? Between the NWSL and WSL

It’s a tough one to answer. Whether intentional or not, the NWSL league relies on growing the game through appealing directly to fans, while the WSL relies on star-played power.

It should also be noted that women’s football should not be defined entirely by these two leagues.

The Primera Division currently boasts the best team in the world in Barcelona.

Division 1 Feminine has the best academies globally, making Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain some of the most competitive teams in Europe. There are strong arguments for other leagues like the Swedish, Italian league to be considered as pillars for growing the game.

It’s unclear whether it’s language bias or if it’s part of the wider UK versus USA debate, but the fact is, the two leagues are constantly pitted against each other with fans, journalists, and players all constantly making a case for one or the other.

The NWSL have been much more clear on their goals to try and become the best and most dominant league. The WSL, on the other hand, have been much more tight-lipped.

The one aspect the two leagues do share is the load of talent. With continued investment, one can hope that both leagues continue to rise and elevate women’s football to greater heights.

When you have players from different continents of the world, you are engaging fans from different continents and you are building out a different dimension to your team, this was what Sweden did years ago From Marta to Caroline Graham Hansen, the Damallsvenskan has housed many of the best players from the past decade. Although the league does not generate the same buzz as it once did, the Damallsvenskan continues to produce and contain amazing talent.

The financial disparity between the WSL and NWSL may also shift in upcoming years due to the NWSL Players’ Association’s first-ever collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which was signed at the beginning of Febraury 2022.

The CBA, which will run for the next five seasons until the end of 2026, includes a minimum salary increase of 60%, and revenue sharing meaning that players will be able to receive 10% of net broadcast revenues if the league is profitable in years three, four and five of the CBA. It also includes improved health benefits for the players.


This new deal will certainly see players in the NWSL making more annually. Just days after the CBA was signed, it was announced that Trinity Rodman signed a new four-year, $1.1million deal with the Washington Spirit, making her the highest-paid player in NWSL history.

For now though, the WSL still has the edge when it comes to star power on the pitch.

Madrid need step up absolutely. For now, the English teams are the more balanced. If a few falcons or falconets can end up in England, it would be top quality for the NT going forward.

Investment in the women’s game is a huge topic in itself but it has impacted the sport very positively. Players have better training facilities, which naturally makes them better footballers on the pitch. There is still a long way to go but the money that has been put in has led to the rise of numerous brilliant players in the English Women Super league

The final draw will be conducted at Mohamed VI Complex in Rabat, Morocco on Friday 29 April 2022 at 20:30 GMT.

Below is the draw procedure:

Back then i remember sorting out a deal with a Serbian Club agent for one of our player based in Germany now, the agent insisted i don't have any discussion with the Club management on his behalf and the pay was just $1500 monthly with Accomodations, Food and Car to be provided for the Player.. A better deal came up so we had to turn it down.. This happened in 2020..

Something is really wrong with this PSG set up, the Commentators where repeatedly talking about it, I wonder what could have prompted a Veteran like Kheira to a fight with Baltimore.

By the way it was a good game from both sides Coupled with defensive errors from PSG..

I bet Kheira would have done better at the DM position if she was available for the game, the Coach had to play a teenager in her Position, then again Aminata Diallo too is unwell.. I think it's seriously deteriorated. For instance, our players, such as Ikidi, Okobi, Anam Imo, despite featuring constantly for their clubs, are not improving massively, even Sweden's best players now prefer playing abroad... Anyway, Swedish and Norwegian Leagues are good enough for Regina Otu to further polish her skills.

If you watch the League games this season you would know how poor it's right now, All their league games are streamed on their YouTube channel, just go their and watch so you can get abreast with how weak it's right now.

Her Current Club Minsk FC is the giant but since last season Dinamo Minsk too over.
Most player's in the league now are Youths (U20 and below especially).

As for the salary there is also very small.

The Turkish league is far far better than the present Belarusian Women premier league in every aspect..
