Christianity EtcRe: What Does The Bible Say About Common Sense? by Scholar8200(m): 6:49pm On Jun 29, 2016
Bible? Common sense?

It teaches to use common sense after God's mind is known, and in line with It, not before nor opposed thereto.

Examples: WRONG USAGE
1. Saul had a battle on hand, he prayed but God didnt answer so he used his common sense and consulted a witch... like we'll say-you know the story!

2. Saul was asked to wait for 7 days. When Samuel delayed and it was still the 7th, Saul used his common sense and ... you know the rest.

3. God told Saul to destroy the Amalekites, he used his common sense and spared the fat ones!

4. Lot was asked to make a choice, he lifted up his eyes and chose the most fertile part ignoring the people there and forgetting that his increase was an off shoot of the blessing on Abraham.

Examples: RIGHT USAGE

1. Paul was assured of safe arrival at Rome, he still appealed to Caesar when it was clear Felix was biased.

2. Jesus loved and preached to the multitude but He stayed in a ship lest He was mobbed

3. David knew he had been anointed and declared to be the next king by no less a prophet as Samuel; he still fled when Saul went after him.

Thanks for your response . Well the purpose of the thread was firstly to identify the different concept of the doctrine of eternal security then also other topics mentioned . I have always believed that eternal security doctrine was based on the idea that a christian can never sin. So by that ,whatever he does wrong would not count . Man is a spirit and whatever the body does would not constitute a sin. And the scripture used most times is

1 John 3:9
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

I don't agree with this doctrine and interpretation . But in my recent discussion with image123 he gave me a different understanding of eternal security it has branches . And he believed that I'm also a teacher of eternal security. Which I don't agree with . So what is really the definition of eternal security . And I want us to look at the concept of sin on this thread also. Thank you.
Let's consider:

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1 John 2:1

1. It says we are to sin not- that is the norm, a state of true soul health
2. It says IF not WHEN any man sins. Meaning it might come as a surprise, not a normal aspect of the new life.
3. It says we have an Advocate with the Father. Meaning If sin comes in, we will once again need the mediation of our Advocate, not a flippant claim of, "God sees me through Jesus hence it does not matter". The imagery here is what was painted in the OT when a trespasser came to the High Priest with a sacrifice. However, now, He is the Advocate, He is the sacrifice, we come by faith and repentance.
4. Does this mean we are free to continue in the sin-and-repent vicious circle?

6 No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains in communion with and in obedience to Him—deliberately, knowingly, and habitually commits (practices) sin. No one who [habitually] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him
1 John 3:6AMP

Which one man? Mohammed was an illiterate. His companions wrote down the hadith based on what they witnessed. Same claims muslims also make about enemies trying to cover up things. They call the compilation of the hadith a scientific process.
but none of the hadith writers witnessed the giving of the Quran to Muhammed? only him saw the angel!

The so called prohecies about Jesus have been disputed and debunked by Jews. Go and ask any rabbi and see them debunk it. There are many of such debates on youtube.
Of the jews, Isaiah prophesied it, Paul affirmed it and Stephen confirmed it, (these men were Israelites) that they were stiff-necked and blinded. What do you expect then of the so-called rabbis? Even Jesus denounced their kind-the pharisees- severely!

Isaiah 53:1
Who hath believed our report?
and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

I know you won't agree to it but it's something under serious dispute and debate. It's not a fact. The gospels were written way to long after the so called events by unknown authors to have any historical importance in my opinion.
Not when John the beloved lived long enough and we have early church fathers (verifiable from history) that were direct proteges of these disciples.

What is eternal security
Can a christian sin
Can a christian lose salvation
Can a christian lose salvation by committing a sin.
How many times can a man be born again.
We are saved by faith. Now can a believer fall or depart from the faith? Are there any warnings to believers of this possibility? If yes, what are the consequences if that happens?

Read the hadith and see the number of the companions of Mohammed that lost their lives in various battles when they were with him. Did you think they gave their lives up over a lie?
That was one man making a claim and many believing him.

This is people stating a fact, with many witnesses and prior prophecies and ongoing promises to back up; even the enemies making and still making frantic efforts to cover it up!

There is a difference.

Similarities to Other Stories
The similarities between the stories and characters in the Bible and those from previous mythologies are both undeniable and well-documented. This would be obvious if it weren’t for early indoctrination of these beliefs into children, which usually makes them unassailable as adults.
In this short piece I’ll attempt to show extraordinary similarities with regard to two of the most important Biblical narratives: the Genesis story and the character of Jesus Christ.
The Book of Genesis’s Flood Story Mirrors The Epic Of Gilgamesh From Hundreds Of Years Earlier
.
Here are a number of elements that both Gilgamesh and the flood story in Genesis share:
1. God decided to send a worldwide flood. This would drown men, women, children, babies and infants, as well as eliminate all of the land animals and birds.
2. God knew of one righteous man, Ut-Napishtim or Noah.
3. God ordered the hero to build a multi-story wooden ark (called a chest or box in the original Hebrew), and the hero initially complained about the assignment to build the boat.
4. The ark would have many compartments, a single door, be sealed with pitch and would house one of every animal species.
5. A great rain covered the land with water.
6. The ark landed on a mountain in the Middle East.
7. The first two birds returned to the ark. The third bird apparently found dry land because it did not return.
8. The hero and his family left the ark, ritually killed an animal, offered it as a sacrifice.
9. The Babylonian gods seemed genuinely sorry for the genocide that they had created. The God of Noah appears to have regretted his actions as well, because he promised never to do it again.
Well, you just helped proved the Bible true!!!

The epic of Gilgamesh is credited to Mesopotamia (or Babylon also called Shinar). And the Bible agrees that that was where the beginning of Nimrod's kingdom started and that was also where they wanted to built the tower (see Genesis 10:8-10) and (Genesis 11:2,4). It therefore means the experience of the flood was known to all inhabitants of the world then. All these occurred just before the Great Dispersion in Genesis 11:9. God confounded the languages but did not format their memories so, each people group went away expressing the generally shared history in his own language hence the similarity!

This alone proves that it really happened!

As regards variation in timing, except we choose to be anachronistic, how do you expect primitive man to keep records accurately? In fact, we should credit their efforts at genealogy!

hopefulLandlord:
Jesus’s Story is an Obvious Rehashing Of Numerous Previous Characters
Perhaps even more compelling is the story of Christ himself. As it turns out it’s not even remotely original. It is instead nothing more than a collection of bits and pieces from dozens of other stories that came long before. Here are some examples.
1. Asklepios healed the sick, raised the dead, and was known as the savior and redeemer.
Where are his followers today? Where are his teachings today? what promises did he make that are being fulfilled today? Saving and redeeming man from what and by what means?

2. Hercules was born of a divine father and mortal mother and was known as the savior of the world.
What did he purport to save the world from and by what means? are there those who pray in hercules name, cast out devils in his name?
3. Dionysus was literally the “Son of God”, was born of a woman who had not had sex with a man, and was depicted riding a donkey . He was a traveling teacher who performed miracles, and was killed and resurrected, after which time he became immortal.
as above.

4. Osiris did the same things. He was born of a virgin, was considered the first true king of the people, and when he died he rose from the grave and went to heaven.
5. Osiris’s son, Horus , was known as the “light of the world”, “The good shepherd”, and “the lamb”. He was also referred to as, “The way, the truth, and the life.” His symbol was a cross-like symbol.
Go here for a sandwich course, do endeavor to answer the posers there to earn a doctorate smiley

https://www.nairaland.com/2375418/jesus-christ-exposes-lie-horus

6. Mithra‘s birthday was celebrated on the
25th of December , his birth was witnessed by local shepherds who brought him gifts, had 12 disciples, and when he was done on earth he had a final meal before going up to heaven. On judgment day he’ll return to pass judgment on the living and the dead. The good will go to heaven, and the evil will die in a giant fire. His holiday is on Sunday (he’s the Sun God). His followers called themselves “brothers”, and their leaders “fathers”
. They had baptism and a meal ritual where symbolic flesh and blood were eaten. Heaven was in the sky, and hell was below with demons and sinners.
The highlighted is where you should realise that somebody simply updated his lies to ape the truth as it was unfolding:
Jesus showed how that the passover pointed to Him and was fulfilled by Him afterwards all believers observe the Lord's supper. What was the basis of the one mithra held?

Christians were called cannibals because of this innocent practice by those who did not understand meaning there was NO group of people who ever did such symbolical actions before!

7. Krishna had a miraculous conception that wise men were able to come to because
they were guided by a star. After he was born an area ruler tried to have him found and killed. His parents were warned by a divine messenger, however, and they escaped and was met by shepherds. The boy grew up to be the mediator between God and man.
8. Buddha ‘s mother was told by an angel that she’d give birth to a holy child destined to be a savior. As a child he teaches the priests in his temple about religion while his parents look for him. He starts his religious career at roughly 30 years of age and is said to have spoken to 12 disciples on his deathbed. One of the disciples is his favorite, and another is a traitor. He and his disciples abstain from wealth and travel around speaking in parables and metaphors. He called himself “the son of man” and was referred to as, “prophet”, “master”, and “Lord”. He healed the sick, cured the blind and deaf, and he walked on water. One of his disciples tried to walk on water as well but sunk because his faith wasn’t strong enough.
Faith in who or what?

9. Apollonius of Tyana (a contemporary of Jesus)
where exactly do you stand? shocked

performed countless miracles (healing sick and crippled, restored sight, casted out demons, etc.) His birth was of a virgin, foretold by an angel. He knew scripture really well as a child. He was crucified , rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples to prove his power before going to heaven to sit at the right hand of the father. He was known as, “The Son of God”.
The problem, of course, is that these previous narratives existed hundreds to thousands of years before Jesus did.
So, he was a contemporary of Jesus yet he has gone extinct while Jesus is still exalted?! Where are his gospels? Even the name suggests a greek origin! Meaning, this was a relatively recent effort by the gnostics in their effort to infiltrate or destroy the faith of Christ all together!

Somebody did a similar work in retrospect, trying to upgrade the Gospels to agree with Islam but failed woefully. They have always tried but failed!!!

Unavoidable contradictions
Not only was the Bible taken largely and blatantly from previous stories, but there are contradictions so massive that they defy belief. Here are just a few of them.
ANd why is it that only NL e-activists are seeing this? How come there was no outcry then and now that the new sect of the Nazarenes were plagiarists? How come this was not the basis of their persecution?

In those days,Israel scattered alot and where even in captivity in Babylon for more than 70 years (i am sure Op has not used 1 year there) and yet these issues never arosehuh They still hold on to the Pentateuch and the Prophets what then?

Noah’s Ark : The story of the Ark is that a pair of every animal on earth was put on the ship. Forgetting for a second the fact that the story came directly from the Epic of Gilgamesh, keep in mind we’re being asked to believe that two 500-year-old people are caring for tens of thousands of animals. And where did they keep the food? How did they keep the poisonous snakes from biting the other animals? And where did they get the polar bears, alligators, and thousands of other animals that that don’t live in the Middle East?
Anachronism! Besides, modern survival tactics such as hibernation etc tells me it would be nothing to God to preserve them thus. Besides, Moses spent a total of 80 days in God's Presence sans food and water. People still do similar today. What then?

The Angel’s Message : In Matthew 1:20 it says the Angel spoke to Joseph. In Luke 1:28 he spoke to Mary. Which was it?
Context varies! Matthew was when Joseph thought he should put her away, Luke was when Mary was to be told of what God was going to do through her. Would God make her conceive without such revelation? Or would God remain quiet when Joseph knew his wife was pregnant without any intimacy? NEVER!

Mary’s Virginity : The Hebrew word ‘Almah’, which people took to mean virgin, actually means ‘young woman of marriage age’. And there are plenty of indications that Jesus had brothers and sisters.
Jesus being her first.

The Census : The authors of the Bible are trying so hard to get Jesus born in Bethlehem that they craft a story about a census. They say that Joseph had to travel back to his father’s homeland in order to register for it. Can you seriously imagine—in any period let alone then—asking the entire country to travel back their father’s hometown to register for a census? It’s completely impossible. The author of the story put it in there because they needed Jesus born in that city. Plus, historians note that the Romans kept extraordinary records, and there wasn’t even a census at that time. It’s completely fabricated, and for obvious reasons.
That was not the only time. Acts 18:2 shows a similar edict:

2 and found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Romesmiley and came unto them.

Jesus and the Family : The Bible says honor your father and mother, yet Jesus says you must hate your father, mother, wife, children, and even your own life to be a disciple, and says to call no man on earth your father. (MT 10:35-37, LK 12:51-53, 14:26, MT 23:9)
cheesy. Yet on the cross He cared for His mum!!! You dont understand these and I may not bother explaining.

God and Murder: God says killing is wrong, yet he advocates genocide. (EX 34:11-14, LV 26:7-9)
God and Slavery : We all know slavery to be wrong, yet God openly advocates it. (GN 17:12, EX 12:43, EX: 21:1, EX 21:20, EX 21:32, LV 22:10, LV 25:44, LK 7:2, CL 3:22)
report Him to ICC! cheesy
On a more serious note, find out if Isreal too suffered similar fate then study on what was responsible for such whole scale judgments on either side, was it always one-sided in favour of Isreal?

Jesus’s Heritage : There are two different genealogies for Jesus given in the Bible, and they don’t match. One is curiously given through Joseph, which is strange since he’s not Jesus’s father. Why give a genealogy through someone who isn’t related to you?
Because he was His earthly father by God's design. That's what matters. Luke's genealogy was from Mary's.

The Passover : It’s widely understood that God is supposed to be all-seeing and all-knowing. If that’s true, then why did he need people to mark their houses with blood in order to keep from killing their babies inside?
It was a parable in action pointing to Jesus!

Kill Your Son to Prove You Love Me: God told Abraham to kill his son to prove that he loved God. Abraham raised the knife to him, about to do it, and God called it off—pleased that he would have done it. Does that sound like a moral God to you?
This is just a tiny sample of the inconsistencies and moral problems with the Bible.
Yes, more like a Holy God WHo MAde ALL things for HIS pleasure! Did Abraham kill his son? God is a God of Justice hence there are things HE does to silence the adversary/accuser.

hopefulLandlord:
Nagging questions
1. How is Jesus’s crucifixion the ultimate sacrifice if he isn’t dead
It is because HEactually died, paid the price of our sins and since He did not have any sin of His He rose after the price for our sins had been paid! You know, the wages of sins is death but He had none.
? He has been immortal since the beginning of time, and he’s still alive and immortal today, so where’s the sacrifice?
HE has flesh and the marks of the crucifixion are still there; they were not there in His OT appearances, Pre-Incarnation!

2. If Jesus removed our sins with his (see above) “sacrifice”, then how come we still have to avoid sin and accept him as our savior to avoid an eternity in hell? What did it accomplish?
Yes, if we truly repent and believe HE saves us from the guilt and power of sin. The power to avoid sin comes from Him not us.

3. Why does the Bible talk constantly about how to manage slaves, how to kill one’s enemies, and how to avoid making God angry, but there’s not much focus at all on seemingly obvious things like, “Thou Shalt Not Harm a Child”?
Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Colossians 3:21 Does not mean you wouldnt spank him where necessary as proverb admonishes.

4. I know the Ark was supposed to be large, but the world currently has an estimated 8,700,000 species of life form. And you needed two of each
5. Forgetting just the numbers problem, how did the species that only exist (and still exist) in South America, and Antartica, and Australia, etc., all make it to the Ark?
Because the animals did not get dispersed before man.

6. What’s the direct, non-hand-waving explanation for the suffering and death of roughly 9 million children per year in a world supposedly ruled by a kind and loving God?
Who did God give the dominion of the world to? And what did he do with it? What you have then is the repercussion of what he did and why blame God?
In fact, God still respects that act of giving dominion to man hence He would not undertake man's redemption except as a man!

The problem is that you guys ASSUME that the stories were written by an eye witness. Remember these stories were written at least 40 -70 years after the alleged event by christians who were telling stories about Jesus to promote the newly founded religion. These guys were just writing fiction that is why the gospel account concerning the resurrection kept changing and being embellished. The first gospel said the women saw man, the next gospel written 10 years after the second one said they saw two men buy the time you get to the last gospel written like 30 years after the first they ladies saw two angels. The writers of the gospel were us writing their stories for people to believe and follow their new religion. They weren't writing down actually historical events. The gospels were written way to long after the supposed event happened to carry any true meaning.
Inspiration is not the endowment of man with omniscience. It is God through man inspite of the frailty and infirmities of the latter. Hence details left off by Mark is supplied by Matthew etc in agreement with the One Body perspective in the NT.

And were the disciples persecuted for a fiction? Martyred for spreading a fiction? And myriads of people have believed and are still believing this 'Fiction' and they are being gloriously transformed even at present? Finding its promises continually and blessedly true (now you and your ilks may blaspheme to lowest hell but it changes nothing of what I know here!!!)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is probably the most important event in Christianity. Apostle Paul said, "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith" (I Cor 15:14). He also said, "if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins". Did it really happen, though? Let's look at the evidence.

1. The Empty Tomb And The Men In White

Mark, which was the first gospel to be written, describes the incident in chapter 16:

Is it reasonable to accept this as evidence that Jesus rose from the dead? Let's see.

Jesus was the T B Joshua of his time. He came from a humble background, was loved by the masses because of his miracle ministry, and was hated by the religious establishment which didn't accept him as a true man of God and felt that his teachings were unscriptural.

Now lets imagine that T. B Joshua died, and then 3 days later the 3 women who were closest to him when he was alive in his ministry came to you with this story: That they went to T B Joshua's grave to pray and lay flowers, but when they got there, they saw that the grave had been opened, the body missing and a young guy in a white suit was sitting there. And the guy told them that T B Joshua had risen from the dead.

Would it be reasonable to believe that T B Joshua had risen from the dead on the basis of this testimony? Wouldn't you be suspicious that T B Joshua's body had been stolen by his top pastors to make it appear that he had risen? That the man in white was just an accomplice of the thieves? That maybe the women were hallucinating due to their grief, or simply lying to hype their hero and crush?
That would only be if the followers of T.B.Joshua are as armed and rugged as ISIS, having what it takes to drive away the SEALS that were on guard! But what does the Bible reveal, the disciples were hiding when all this happened!

I am extremely concerned and curious to why no one has been able to refute things I said on this thread. All I see are angry people indirectly admitting that the noah's story is bullcrap but they are still willing to accept it.

Just the way they accepted to bath with salt water during the ebola outbreak
ANy one who reads your thread will be quick to notice this denigratory practice! It is ok.

Yes I will continue.
And yes the bible stands just as other religions stand which does not in anyway mean they are no bullcrap.
Hope you know 1. islam is the fastest growing religion. If you don't know, know that today.
2.So that a religion is growing or survives for a long time is no proof that it is the truth.
1.You only say this because the media said so!
2. An opinion, to which we are all entitled!

HardMirror:
You are very funny.
So how did the water cover mount Ararat that is 5,100meters tall? Won't such a great water spread? Or does water not find it's level?
If I believe that the earth itself was once submerged with water and God made all that stood out therefrom, I would not find it hard to believe that HE allowed same to happen at a point when judgement was due.

But here, you are being anachronistic! How? The Bible speaks of water not just from the skies but from another source that we are not familiar with today - the fountains of the Great Deep! Now, isnt it wonderful that 'primitive men'(who you claim invented the Bible) knew of water under the ground?? How many floods today have been supplied therefrom?

How did kangaroos end up in austrialia? Why is it that we can only find marsupials in australia and neighboring islands ONLY? Why can't we find fossils of kangaroos and other marsupials around the middle east where Adam and Eve, noah and the rest lived with all animals?
The Bible was not primarily written to answer these questions! The use of animal bones is purely a science/evolution subject which may not be needed here. Besides, animals still migrate from place to place today, what then?

However, I would refer to the organic connection God established at creation between man and other creatures such that man was made the head and the whole moved his direction. Man fell, the whole was affected. Man was dispersed, the whole was affected. Man would be redeemed, the whole would be affected (Romans cool.

You have not disproved points I raised and you are rejoicing.
Indeed, I rejoice even more! the points you raised are purely anachronistic being so because they were informed from an understandably purely theophobic, mind!

Again I ask, why does this cock and bull story sound sensible to you but stories of Zeus and the gods of olympus makes you laugh to scorn? The fact is you know it is ridiculous just like the roman and greek myths, but you also know admitting this will mean admitting this bible god to be dumb
We all protect what we think is ours.
Only natural to try and defend your faith.
Zeus? gods of olympus? I would have brought up my analysis here again but the first time I did, fellow theophobes like you began various attacks against the messenger while ignoring the message. It is however available on request.

This thread employs the tactic of anachronism cum erroneously mixing Bible facts with evolution's assumptions!

Op, you failed once again, I love the Bible more!!! smiley

The only point I could have consented is if the Bible had claimed the dispersion in Genesis 11 occurred before the flood! However, before the Great dispersion, the then world of men where within the same Geographical area hence the judgement that was against men came for man where they could be found, not the whole globe.

Somebody spoke of men capable of building boats (maybe he wont mind proving it though!!! Very funny!Indeed, why do we not have people that are overrun by ocean surge, tsunamis etc taking to their boats immediately to avert the whole scale destruction?

Well, op, continue your efforts, you are not the first, and definitely shall not be the last, many have come and gone but the Bible stands!!!

So, what happened?
What happened? Well, there was a ghastly accident. May God grant the injured quick recovery and the dead repose and their families fortitude to bear a loss so painful .

I believe I have answered your question?

Great bro, good one. please, re-read frosbel post again and read scholar reply. Because david , abraham and others marry more than one wife that mean its isn't adultery ? God sanction the sending away of abraham second wife haggai, and for david, david pay for his sins, solomon heart was turn away from God by his wives. The union of marriage was sanction in Genesis, when God created adam and eve and enjoined them as ONE flesh.
Indeed, as per the highlighted, God declared that He hates divorce but this case, the woman in question was not a wife in the truest, Scriptural sense of the Word!!!

Op, well, you have the right to make your analysis. You mentioned Carol but I believe that is not held every week but once in a year. Besides, these schools close early on friday every week to allow those who are muslims practise their religion, what then? But I have these questions:

1. Before the coming of Muhammad, did the Arab women use the hijab? If yes, what informed the practice?

2. Is there an express command in the Quran commanding women in Islam to use the hijab at ALL places? If yes, kindly quote it here.

Have you heard of restitution before? Do you know what it's about?
I am surprised! Even Jesus affirmed that the woman who had had 5 husbands was with another man who He/she affirmed was not hers! They cohabited, he (the other 5 and the current ones) played the role of husband, the warped society called them husbands, but before the Lord, they were not hers. Now translate this to the man that had more than one wife!

Besides, these folks are the ones that perhaps would call Zacchaeus foolish for restoring all that he had got falsely!

God help us from these peddlers of damnable heresies!!!
