Christianity EtcRe: Prayer Of Salvation; Must The Convert Confess Jesus? by Scholar8200(m): 3:22pm On Jun 21, 2016
Varagous:
I have seen ministers make altar calls, and then they pray for the converts without making them pray the sinners prayer. according to Romans 10:9-10 one should confess Jesus as Lord.. then you'll be saved! am I taking the scripture literally or are the ministers incorrect?
Well, it is difficult to establish hard and fast rules here; but it is necessary to examine the fruits after a profession is made.

For example, look at the Acts of the Apostles, you will notice that there was no template used but the results were identical.

Let us apply your logic to scripture and remember even Paul referred to scripture ( not the new testament ) as ;
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness," - 2 Timothy 3:16
No problem.

Now , in the so called New Testament, Jesus said that the only reason why Moses permitted divorce in the ancient days , was due to the hardness of heart of his people in the context of divorce. It was never about marrying another wife , it was about putting away a wife or wives. There is no other reason Jesus gave in relation to their hardness of heart, like marrying multiple women for example.
Read Matthew 19 again. Jesus spoke about marrying another woman while the first was still alive and called it adultery.

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Matthew 19:9

Now, it will be erroneous to interpret the above to mean you can marry another provided you dont put the first away! shocked

The Bible says that God does not change, in other words he expects the same standards from ALL mankind whether they lived 1 million or 10 years ago.
And His plans for man has been unfolding gradually since the fall. Jesus, not me, highlighted the issue of hardness of heart allowed for under the old testament!

Now you say this but forget that the Paul spoke about Bishops and Deacons having ONE wife! Were they going to get married before becoming Bishops and Deacons or afterhuh And wont they first be disciples before becoming Bishops and Deaconshuh?

Danger starts when having passed a stage, we go back to revive the "stones from the rubbish" of that which God had annulled, though permitted initially.

Using your logic we can call David, Jacob, Abraham and many others SERIAL ADULTERERS because they married MORE THAN ONE WOMAN, yet God never condemned them, in fact he called them righteous and loved them. David was condemned and punished for adultery not because he had many wives but because he slept with , and impregnated another man's wife and then had him killed. Solomon was not condemned because he had many wives and even concubines, he was condemned and punished because he married heathen women who took his heart away from God. None of these great men were told to drive away their other wives and remain with the first one.
Once again, Jesus, not me, highlighted the fact that certain things were allowed in the Old Testament because of the hardness of heart. The New testament addresses this hence it is called a Better covenant. Would you manage to prove that ANY of the disciples/apostles had 2 or more wives? We have Aquila and Priscilla (neither Bishops nor Apostles they), Paul spoke that the Apostles led about(I quote)

... a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
1 Corinth 9:5
Why didnt they, like you are claiming, compare themselves to David? And did they get married after becoming apostles or before?

All through the NT can you support or back up polygamy with just one verse, expressedly or impliedly? Matthew 19 runs in the same tenor with Jesus saying, "ye have heard that... but I say unto you" meaning this is the NT, those things overlooked due to hardness of heart and the limit of the law are no more permissible under the NT!

The suggestion that a man who has 4 wives should get rid of the later 3 with their children is unscriptural, evil, wicked, mad , stupid, devilish and not from GOD at all
Nice retort brother! Show me a proof that the other 3 are 'wives' to start with. By what arrangement? Matthew 19? Malachi 2:14-16? or Frosbel's book of surmisings?! undecided

, it is a figment of imagination in the minds of MOG followers who stick to the words of their pastors and their warped interpretation of scripture, without reasoning things out for themselves.
Interesting. And yet folks like you will be quick to call for the head of the 'MOG' that marries a second wife!

I personally have ONE WIFE and would not marry another purely because more than ONE WOMAN = STRESS AND TROUBLE and increased Financial commitment in this modern time, not because I can't !!!
Congrats.

Christianity EtcRe: If A Man Has Multiple Wives And Becomes A Christian, What Is He Supposed To Do? by Scholar8200(m):

You are ignorant of the deep truths of scripture.

Men have always married more than one woman from time immemorial and it was never considered sin then or even now , because if it did, then David, Abraham and a host of God's righteous men would have been labelled unrighteous. In fact the only time that God called David an adulterer was when he slept with ANOTHER MAN'S WIFE, not because he had multiple wives.

Stop this religious fanaticism.
So, when a married man begins to eye another woman (unmarried) with a desire for her while his wife is alive, what is that called, nay, what did Jesus call it?

Did not Jesus say divorce was allowed under the OT because of the hardness of their heart? And that it was NOT so from the beginning?

Stop the promotion of error!!!
Christianity EtcRe: If A Man Has Multiple Wives And Becomes A Christian, What Is He Supposed To Do? by Scholar8200(m): 8:46am On Jun 21, 2016
Indeed God hates divorce, but divorce only comes up where marriage existed. Malachi 2:14-16 speaks on terms of the wife (not wives) of thy youth. It also said God made BOTH ONE. Emphasizing that it is between 2 not more. Besides, Jesus established this when He quoted Genesis that they are no more 2( not 3 or more) but 1.

Now realise that certain things passed under the OT due to hardness of heart and limited revelation which we cannot emulate in the NT! Eg polygamy. For a married man to think of taking another wife means he had been committing adultery in his heart, admiring and desiring another woman while his wife was alive!!!

Hence the other 'wives' will go and the first remains! But of course, the children of the other women are to be catered for by the man.

Since Jesus taught that marriage to a divorcee is adultery, I wonder how some here seek to justify marriage to a married man!!!

By Femi Aribisala

As for me, I only believe the report of the Lord Jesus.

Every Christian must decide whether he is a follower of Jesus or a follower of Paul. Don’t make the mistake of many in assuming the two are the same. For starters, take a closer look at the following.

Discrepancies

Jesus says children of God are born of God: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3). But Paul says children of God are adopted by God: “We ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons.” (Romans 8:23).
The use of the word adoption is just to differentiate the children by faith from the only Begotten One. Jesus said in that same John 3 that to be born of God is to be born of the Spirit, so says Paul:

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Galatians 4:6

Jesus says God must be the only father of believers: “Call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.” (Matthew 23:9). But Paul calls himself the father of some believers: “I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment.” (Philemon 1:10).
That's purely a figurative use! Even Jesus said this:
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
Mark 7:12

Jesus says he is the only pastor and the only teacher: “I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one pastor.” (John 10:16). “Nor be called teachers, for One is your Teacher, even Christ.” (Matthew 23:cool. But Paul says there are many pastors and teachers: “Truly he gave some to be apostles, and some to be prophets, and some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. (Ephesians. 4:11-12). “I am ordained a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie), a teacher of the nations, in faith and truth.” (1 Timothy 2:7).
But Jesus Himself appointed shepherds:
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:16

This was said to Peter. The same Peter wrote:

feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3 neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
1 Peter 5:2-4

Lest I forget:

20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen
Matthew 28:20

Anomalies

Jesus says we should pray in private: “When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your room. And shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:5-6). But Paul says we should pray everywhere: “I desire that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” (1 Timothy 2:cool.
You are ignoring what was condemned in the sermon on the mount namely praying in public with the intention to be seen.. Else, what of the prayers in public in the Ot that were graciously answered eg Hannah praying in the Temple.

Jesus himself was circumcised: “When eight days were fulfilled to circumcise the child, his name was called JESUS, the name called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” (Luke 2:21). But Paul says if we are circumcised we would be estranged from Christ: “I, Paul, say to you that if you are circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do all the Law, you who are justified by Law are deprived of all effect from Christ; you fell from grace.” (Galatians 5:2-4).
The same Paul circumcised Timothy!!! The point Paul was making in Galatians was that we dont get circumcised in order to be saved! Even the council at Jerusalem in Acts 15 agreed with Paul's position!!!

Jesus says we should not receive payment for preaching the gospel: “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. You have received freely, freely give.” (Matthew 10:cool. But Paul says we should receive payment for preaching the gospel: “If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?” (1 Corinthians 9:11).
Jesus said thus:
And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
Luke 10:7

Agrees perfectly!!!

Contradictions

Jesus says we should love one another: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35). But Paul wished some people would be castrated: “I wish that those causing you to doubt will cut themselves off.” (Galatians 5:12).
Jesus denounced the pharisees that were doing similar actions of deception being perpetrated by Paul's references:

Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Matthew 23:33 (Read the whole chapter).

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6
Jesus says we should love our enemy in order to be like God: “I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:44-45). But Paul says we should love our enemy for malicious reasons: “If your enemy hunge
Now sir, this is malicious! Paul simply quoted from Proverbs 25:21,22!!!

To the theist, why are there so many Gods and what makes u think your own is the right onehuh
Nice question:
1. In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the Earth, and man;
2. After the flood, man tried to establish a one world govt(Genesis 10:9,10., before the great dispersion);
3. God dispersed man and every body went separate ways each with a version of the error that underlay point 2
4. Others, in trying to ignore God, created idols but it was clear what was involved (eg baal being shaped like a phallus etc)
4b The people in 2 and 4 are the roots of the genealogical tree that has branched into various gods and idols.
5. While various groups followed either the error in 2 or the ones invented in 4, there were some like Enoch, Job, Abraham that still held on to the true God of 1.
6. Of those that did so, God embarked on fulfilling His promise of a Deliverer. And all over the World, there are that recognised and hold on to the Deliverer promised!
7. Since the personality behind the errors of 2 & 4 saw that the promises he tried to prostitute were being fulfilled, he embarked on an underhanded upgrade of the lies he sold to man. For example, at the time of Genesis 11/12, the best he could steal was that somebody was the woman whose Seed will destroy the serpent. After Christ, they quickly upgraded their stories to anachronistically include parts of the life of Jesus which they did not have before. (This is why they tried to infiltrate the Church in the early years, books like the Gospel of Barnabas is a similar effort along this line)

Now, if there was no God, and you claim man invented God (the One in point 1)? Then what template informed their decision? Why would they invent idols and to achieve what purpose or with which model in mind? And why do we have disparities in commands if man invented the God concept? If evolution populated the world, whence the diversity in language? For example animals, lions do not roar in Africa but grunt in India? Goats do not grunt in Nigeria but miaow in China?

If like someone said, it was biodiversity that took very slow steps, okay, why did it leave the animals behind and single out man?
Christianity EtcRe: Why Faith Is Bad by Scholar8200(m): 4:25pm On Jun 18, 2016
Seun:
One if the issues with religion is that it promotes the idea of believing something not because you have been convinced by rational arguments and objective evidence that it is true, but because you want to believe it and choose to believe it.

When beliefs are based on reason and evidence, they are very likely to be true or at least close to the truth. When they are not, they are very likely to be false and far from the truth. False beliefs cause people to make bad decisions which lead to worse outcomes for them and for society.
Indeed! However, there are true beliefs which have caused (and is still causing) people to make good decisions and the society has been better of for it. A good example is how whole communities were transformed during revivals. Transformed insomuch that the police confessed of having no crimes to fight!

https://onecanhappen./2013/03/08/effects-of-the-welsh-revival-1904-05-whole-communities-were-radically-changed-from-depravity-to-glorious-goodness-the-crime-rate-dropped-often-to-nothing-the-underground-mines-echoed-with-the-soun/
When most people in society base their beliefs on objective evidence and reason, their beliefs tend to converge towards a single consistent view of reality. This enables them to cooperate massively and achieve great things for all to enjoy e.g. in science. In faith based societies and institutions, differences of opinion are hard to resolve, because people dogmatically hold on to their beliefs, leading to chronic conflicts that often erupt into violence.
Well, every system of belief has a group called the fanatics. Difficulty in resolution of differences occurs when people use religion as a smokescreen to mask other purposes.

Hence it will be wrong to judge that system of belief by that minority since it is clear that (at least in Christianity) these groups act beyond the tenets of faith of the larger group. The first point of consideration should have been an examination of what is believed.

The policy, if adopted, will lead to an increase in crime rate. Robberies at ATM sheds, robberies in homes as people will keep cash at home for urgent transactionary purposes (to avoid the possible delay at the ATM sheds due to long queues and faulty machines.),resurgence of highway robberies since traders will choose to carry liquid cash when travelling to avoid the frustration that comes with no network problems. Increase in cybercrimes as many semi-literates, illiterates etc who are novices in IT will be scammed and robbed of their hard earned monies.

The banks will also suffer as they will record low deposits from the masses especially the largely unbanked, informal sector. Besides, getting people to open accounts will be an uphill task. In fact, they might be hit by a tornado of frenzied withdrawals soon! The policy which seems to favour the banks in the short term, appears to have self-destruct tendencies in the medium term.

Moreover, the effort by DMBs to capture the informal sector will fail as these people, largely unlettered, will prefer to keep their physical cash rather than engage in the various e-payment platforms and all the possible issues that may arise.

Okay. Let me rephrase. The "obey me and I will continue to love you" is that wrong too?
Now since He loved them before they started obeying Him, His call to obedience is because if they did otherwise, He may warn them of the consequences of their choice and delay same but not forever lest it becomes injustice. At such time, He gives them up ,in love, to the consequences of their choices which He had attempted to shield them from. I said HE does that in love because HE expects that will bring them, not to destruction, but to repentance.

The Bible is replete with such examples of Israel's rebellion and repentance. A good example is the quote from 2 Chronicles 34:15 earlier in this thread.

You forgot to add, if either refuses to play his role, the agreement becomes null and void
No, it only begets a broken covenant with room for a restoration if there is repentance on the part of the defaulting party. Only God Who initiated the OT had the power to disannull it and He made it clear He would in Jeremiah 31:31.

Deut. 4:37,

And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;

It's pointed out here as well as deut 7 that the Lord's treatment of Israel is based on His love for their fathers [Abraham, Isaac, Jacob]. A little later the Lord expresses His love for Israel as a nation,
And those fathers had neither covenant nor laws to obey to earn that love. They simply responded to the overtures (which many rejected Romans 1:21-23) of God's Love and walked with Him by faith.

True

I can't force you to see the difference.

I noticed you ignored the questions I asked in my replies.

Which part is wrong here?
The ,''obey me and I will love you'' part! Deuteronomy 7:7 refutes that view.
What's definition of covenant?
An agreement wherein each plays his role. This was necessary in God's dealing with them because He never forces His benefits on us. Their keeping to the covenant was an indication that they were still interested in being joined to Him and His purposes for them.

God loved them based on the abarahamic covenant. But God now outlines what would make this convent void hence the conditions
God loved them because that is His nature.

On what basis then did God love Abraham, or Enoch, or Job, or the ante-deluvian world whom He warned severally before sending the flood? (LOVE delays judgement deserved to the point that it will be injustice to delay it any longer! Meanwhile, LOVE does all possible to make the offender repent!)

The promise to Abraham was never made void by the Mosaic covenant. In fact the New Covenant is still based on God's Promise to Abraham!

I am sure by now you must have learnt that using humans love to describe God's love doesn't work out for you. You tried it in the judge son example, it didn't work. You equally tried it in the father son Going Out example and it didn't work too.
That's still your opinion! Even the Bible uses the known to illustrate the spiritual eg the Parables of Jesus!.
Christianity EtcRe: Christianity: Unconditional Love by Scholar8200(m): 3:03pm On Jun 10, 2016

Let's see what the Bible says
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love” (John 15:9-10).
He loved them before the call to obey meaning they did not fulfill any condition to be loved. Of course if they rebelled He will still love them and call them but He wont force them, they would be forsaking Him and the love HE has for them!

The parable of the prodigal son comes up here. The prodigal left the comfort of the father's house and suffered (a consequence). There is a consequence if we make the wrong choices!

Am I wrong? Did not Peter deny Him? Did not Peter and the rest forsake Him to go and fish? Did they drown for not being obedient? Didnt He LOVINGLY attend to their need and even prepared breakfast for them?

But let's say after all this they still rejected Him, well there is NO middle ground! Choosing evil is just by rejecting good. And the consequence of our choices are part of the package.

If we obey His commands, we will remain in His love. By implication, if we do not obey His commands we will not remain in his love. Again we see that God loves those who obey the teachings and commands of the Lord Jesus and they will remain in God’s love as they obey his commands, just as Jesus did.

So why are you trying to deny this point that is so obvious in the Bible?
See, if they do not obey it will mean they forsake His love. If He had said, keep my commands so that I can continue loving you that will have being a different issue.

Now consider:

13 [Now] before the Passover Feast began, Jesus knew (was fully aware) that the time had come for Him to leave this world and return to the Father. And as He had loved those who were His own in the world, He loved them to the last and to the highest degree.

2 So [it was] during supper, Satan having already put the thought of betraying Jesus in the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son,
John 13:1,2

He loved them even when one of them had planned to betray Him and He knew! He loved them even when they were all going to forsake Him at the period of trial and one was even going to curse and swear that he never knew Him, and He knew!!!

I am referring to the mosaic covenant.
It was an obey my Laws amd I will love you kind of convenant.
That's not correct. Was the quote from Deuteronomy of God's love given after the people had obeyed God or before?

This issue of covenant actually brings out something new.
The word, "covenant," is briyth (ber-eeth), in Hebrew, defined as, "a compact," an agreement between parties.

It carries legal authority whereby both parties are constrained (obligated) by conditions within the covenant. It is always conditional on each of the parties fulfilling his/her part of the covenant/compact.

A covenant is always conditional. No? If it is conditional then God doesn't love unconditionally.
The covenant was a derivative of God's promise to Abraham, no more, no less.

God did not make a covenant with them hoping that they would obey so that He can love them??!!! That's absurd!

Besides, does a man love his wife because she said 'I do'' or before she said "I do" ?

Now did God hate all others since He did not make a covenant with them? Job, for example was not an Israelite and he was greatly blessed by God!

The reason you can't answer it is because of your current stand of unconditional love of God. Because you know that there are serious implications in either YES OR NO reply
That's your assumption.

Man/the world of men, not angels or devils, is God's audience in the Word. There we read of God's dealings and relation to man.

That is why the Bible starts with not how, when or why God created angels, but man.

Asking about that which is extra-biblical and expecting an answer is an invitation to make erroneous assumptions.

I just wonder if there is more to the wearing of the so called hijab copied from Arabian countries.

Meanwhile, CAN should act in a biblical manner so as not to be seen as playing an eye for an eye game.
God bless you a million times for the highlighted! Imagine! If they say their Quran commands them to wear it every where fine! At least they are not asking the Christians to wear it too.

Besides, there is no command on church robes, brigade/choir uniforms in the Bible. This is a case of straining at a gnat and swallowing camels!CAN is here teaching the children rebellion

CAN should focus on evangelism and organising outreaches that cannot be handled by single denominations, not fraternising or fighting with the Government!

No matter how we talk about this, we will always arrive at the conditions. It's mosaic covenant was made with them. And they broke the covenant as we can see in
II Kings 17:7-8

For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, . . . and they had feared other gods, and had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the LORD had cast out from before the children of Israel.

And the Lord was very angry with them and below was what happened next
2 Kings 17:18-20

18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.

20 And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

So you see, after they disobeyed God, the love covenant was gone.

Could you please give me a reference showing how God loved them after they disobeyed Him?
Love covenant?Gone? Where did you get these from?

14 Also all the chiefs of the priests and the people trespassed greatly in accord with all the abominations of the heathen, and they polluted the house of the Lord which He had hallowed in Jerusalem.
15 And the Lord, the God of their fathers, sent to them persistently by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.
2 Chronicles 36:14,15

It is the Love of God that, in spite of how hopelessly far down they had gone, withheld judgement but rather sent messengers to warn them that they may repent!
