EducationSee The Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Study Microbiology In The University. by Schoolguy9(op): 3:44pm On Aug 04, 2017
Microbiology is an emerging broad discipline that not so many people have regarded relevant due to the the little knowledge that we have of it. Microbiology is a rapidly evolving field with new discoveries being made everyday, researches whose results help to better the lots of mankind are also being carried out. Here are the top ten reasons why a student should study Microbiology in the university.
To Gain Knowledge
Microbiology is an emerging broad field of study. Though it is seen as just the study of microorganisms and their impart on the environment, it also finds wide applications in major areas as human health, industries, food management, water treatment, soil and agriculture, bioremediation etc. Gaining the knowledge of Microbiology is a huge asset that can translate into monetary gain in the future if properly applied.

For satisfaction.
One of the main reasons why people establish businesses is to make profit. Another is to earn satisfaction. They study of Microbiology is not, to an extent, too different from these. There are a lot of people who yearn for knowledge irrespective of monetary gain though we know that that would come in too. If gaining knowledge of the effects and the applicable uses of most if not all of the invisible organisms that have impart on man and his environment is what you seek, then Microbiology will satisfy you.
Recognition.
Some courses studied in the universities are not widely recognized. This is because some of them are begun by a particular department in a particular university somewhere without them being globally recognized. Take for example, if a university in Hong Kong decides to carve out a discipline from the body of existing ones in order to meet a particular need or supplement an existing one, such a course may be vibrant and existing there but when you move out of the region and say, come to Nigeria, you may be surprised not to hear anything about such a course here. In essence, there are some courses that are not yet widely recognized but they are in existence. Microbiology today is evolving. Go to Japan or China you will get to know the same thing.
Relatedness of Microbiology to other courses.
Microbiology is not an isolated course in the world of science. It is not surprising to find a microbiology student with vast knowledge in Biochemistry, Zoology or Parasitology. This is because most of the courses are related. For example, a Microbiology student who wants to understand fully the works of Gram Christian on staining techniques will first of all understand through the study of Physics that unlike charges attract each other while like charges attract. This is the basic principle of Gram staining technique which is an indispensable procedure that tends classify organisms into either Gram positive or Gram negative depending on the reaction between a dye and the nature of the microorganism's cell wall. Microbiology is also interchangeable with other related courses where it is absolutely necessary.

Specialization.
Microbiology is an emerging broad field. Though it is mainly seen as the study of microorganism which have an impart on man and his environment, Microbiology finds wide application in major areas that has to do with man and the environment. Some of these areas include Agriculture, Recycling, bioremediation, industrial, food, medical microbiology etc. All of these fields create areas of specialization for professionals and Doctorate degree holders in the field of Microbiology. One can study Microbiology and be good in what one does but finding a particular field to specialize in avails one the opportunity to dig deeper into the knowledge that can be applied to more specific situations.
Accreditation.
Microbiology, as it's widely recognized is accredited in most universities in Nigeria and it is even offered as an option in Science Laboratory Technology (ie, SLT) in most polytechnics. The field of Microbiology does not require such requirements as 77 Doctors of Philosophy, 68 post graduate lecturers or Professors before it can be accreditated for study in the university. All it asks for is a conducive environment and the right tutors. Microbiology is widely accredited in the universities and most polytechnics e.g Nnamdi Azikiwe University, NAU, Awka and Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

Competitiveness.
Due to its wide accreditation, Microbiology finds a lower entrance competition compared to other science courses. An applicant who wants to study of Microbiology in the university must have good grades to facilitate his or her admission. Though Microbiology is not hugely competitive, it is the best thing to stay on the safer side by having good grades such as JAMB score and West African Examination Council (WAEC) grade in relevant subjects.

Job Availability.
Job openings in the field of Microbiology are enormous. One who studied Microbiology can find career options in environmental microbiology, quality control personnel, water and sewage treatment, medical microbiology, research assistance, teaching, sales representative of science related companies and as well as agricultural procedures. A degree in Microbiology can qualify one for of these job opportunities.

Innovative.
Microbiology is evolving, so are its uses. The study of Microbiology avails one the opportunity to 'think out of the box' and come up with reasonable theories that can be tested, experimented on and research analysis given with the sole aim of solving one of our numerous problems. The study of Microbiology is an opportunity as well as an invitation for one to step into the endless possibilities of discoveries. Microorganism for many of their beneficial uses are engineered to produce desirable traits and results. Care has to be taken to make sure the right results are obtained. You can think of anything you can do with a degree in Microbiology.
Pay.
According to Payscale.com, Microbiologists earn up to 33,000 USD annually in the United States of America. A Microbiologist's salary depends largely on the area of specialization and the area of work the person is partaking in. Top paying areas are mostly industrial productions, quality controls and administrative purposes. You can find out how much they earn in Nigeria by doing a little research online.

Bonus.
Course Duration.
The minimum duration of the study of Microbiology in the university is just 4 years. This is largely preferable compared to other courses as engineering which takes up to 5 years.

EducationImportance Of Education To Any Nigerian by Schoolguy9(op): 1:04pm On Jul 31, 2017
Education is power. So it is often say. But how do we tap into this power? That's a question that has remain vaguely answered.

Importance of education to any Nigerian gives us insights on how best to see education and not consider it a stressful event.

Growing up in the country, Nigeria, you have to go to school, it is every Nigerian's right but to most it's a privilege considering the fact that some academicians have come up sometimes to affirm that, "Education is only for the rich." That notwithstanding, tap into the system while the provision is there for you. For those that are not yet in school, I hope that you get in soon.

Education is the basis of every child's training. Mostly formal education, it prepares a child wonderfully for the inevitable interaction the child will have with the world today and in later days as one progresses in the ladder of life. So, education should be taken seriously. No one knows where fate will lead one tomorrow, having the right foundation in school would help one to be courageous and confident in dealing with others.

Education has a lot in stock to offer. It prepares one to be qualified for job employments, it helps one to interact with others, those in the same age brackets or not, it helps one to understand people and be understood too in terms of interpersonal communication. Without education, there would be little or no understanding in our world today, hence crises would loom. But for the help of education, millions of people from diverse orientations are harmonized through the use of learnt languages and standardized ones, such as English language, French and Portuguese.

Moreover, one may claim that in some countries as Nigeria, jobs are not readily gotten after school hence the need to discard education or in their own words, "overhaul the system" but it is an erroneous assumption. To me, there might not be job vacancies is the disciplines you are schooled in readily waiting for you after graduation but there are some levels of values you must have discovered through the school system that can help you to survive on the long run even in some fields you are not schooled in. One of those values is the courage to act where necessary, another is the urge to earn one thing or the other be it monetary or material value by serving, (after all it is in school that most of us learn to say, "Yes, Sir." , "I'm sorry Sir," "Ok sir.) others include developing the problem solving abilities and instincts, there is nothing for you if you can't solve any problem with what you have learnt, the ease to communicate your way through the crowds among so many things. I do not see education as a liability but a huge asset that can amount to success.

Also, other aspects of an average Nigerian's live where education finds applicable uses are listed below.
Politics.

Understanding of how one is being ruled comes with education.

Health.

It is good to seek knowledge that looks into health. Being educated helps a Nigerian to understand certain medical terminologies and also know how to read prescriptions.

Human Rights.

Civil education helps one to understand ones fundamental rights. I bet that without education one may remain ignorant to the exercise of one's rights and entitlements. Let us seek education so that we will be knowledgeable in things that concern us.
I hope you like this and it is helpful to you.

PoliticsYou Didn’t Mean Well For The Party, PDP Tells Okupe. by Schoolguy9(op): 6:07am On Jul 05, 2017
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the exit of the former Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs Dr Doyin Okupe, from the party would have no effect on the party.
The party described Okupe’s exit as ‘good riddance and a non-issue.’ This was contained in a statement released in Abeokuta on Tuesday signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Adeniji.
The party said Okupe would not be missed in any way, as he was not known for any fundamental ideology.

[Read Also: I’M NOT QUITTING POLITICS AND I’M NOT JOINING APC – DOYIN OKUPE]
The statement reads in part: “Okupe in his statement noted that the future of the party may not be significantly affected whichever way the judgement of the Supreme Court goes.
“We find this unfortunate because it shows that he is one of those who does not mean well for the party. It is shameful that at a time when relevant stakeholders such as governors, senators, BOT members and other loyal members, have resolved to forge ahead in unity irrespective of the Apex Court decision, an Okupe is a lone voice, steeped in negativity and backwardness.” On the claim that the party was divided in Ogun state, the party admitted but said the leadership of the PDP was fixed.
“The people are united and working hard towards electoral success in 2019. That some persons decided to form a social group to push the personal ambition of their sponsors, does not translate to factionalisation and we will not allow Okupe to legitimise the aberrant and rebellious activities of some of our members,” it said.

The United Nations refugee agency is condemning an attack on its staffers in Central African Republic.
A spokesman in Geneva on Tuesday said armed men entered the agency’s site in the northern town of Kaga Bandoro on Saturday and robbed six U.N. staffers.
The U.N. says the staffers were threatened at gunpoint. It says staffers have been relocated temporarily to the local base of the U.N. peacekeeping mission and some will be moved to the capital, Bangui.
More than half a million people are displaced in Central African Republic as deadly sectarian violence continues.
The situation has worsened in recent months, with more than 300 people killed and 100,000 people displaced since mid-May after attacks in the impoverished country’s southeast and center.

A facebook user who has been identified simply as J. I. Obaji has taken to the internet to lament over two of her phones which were stolen at gunpoints at different locations on campus following her arrival at Oko Polytechnic, a federal polytechnic located in Anambra State.

Ms. Obaji who made a post to break the sad news to her friends on social media had these to say,

"Longest Time my People! Fed. Poly. Tnx."

In a bide to translate the news to a more understandable form, here is an edited excerpt of the message,

"Longest time my people! Federal Polytechnic, Oko students welcomed me to their school by stealing my phones with a small gun pointed at my head (threatening) to shoot me if I don't cooperate with them. I had no option than to surrender (my phone to them). After three days, I used the money meant for my textbooks to buy a (new) phone and welcome back by SIM cards. They attacked again on Tuesday being 14th of Feb., (2017) by 3am. Since then I've not been with a(ny) phone not to talk of Chatting on Facebook and Whatsapp. Please for those people that have any of my MTN (phone) numbers should (not hesitate to) call me so that I can get back your (phone) numbers. Thanks."

This is coming at a time when almost everyone believes that our students in the various higher institutions of learning in the country deserve a conducive environment to enhance their academic potentials.

Christianity EtcThe Significance Of The Good Friday. by Schoolguy9(op): 10:56am On Apr 14, 2017
The Significance Of The Holy Week And The Good Friday.

Today, most christians all over the world especially the catholics observe the contested day, Good Friday. It comes during the holy week and precede Easter which is the day of celebration of the rising from the dead of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The 'Good Friday' is observed in most countries of the world where the catholics are located. No one knows why it is termed so but some has contested or argued that the 'good' attached to it comes from etymological usage, "God's Friday", while some would argue that it is termed so because it begets the glorious celebration of the day Christ was raised from the dead.

In all, some christians observers/ tradition would choose to use the opposite. In Germany, for example, it is termed, "Karfreitag" which means "Sorrowful Friday" while also it is referred to as Great Friday and Holy Friday in some doctrines.
The Holy Friday, is usually proclaimed a holiday in most christians countries like Nigeria.

On this day, the christians faithfuls memorize the events of that took place throughout the time Jesus Christ was subjected to worldly humiliation (according to the Holy Bible) and willfully suffered and was put to death to take away the sins of the world.
On a day like this, the churches in the christians faith are not adorned in decorations. The Crucifix bearing the body of Christ nailed to the cross hung on the alters are wrapped with sacred cloths. In most churches, like the catholic denomination today, the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated.

Christian faithfuls on this day to recall the sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Cavalry.
On this day, the christians faithfuls recall the suffering and death of Christ through public readings of specific Psalms and the gospels, singing of hymns about the death of Christ. In most cases, especially in Nigeria, the series of these events are acted out by the various churches' youths and faithful observes.

Your turn:
What do you think about the Holy Friday? Are you going to be part of it? Do think it should be called sorrowful Friday too?

PoliticsI Didn’t Say God Is Punishing Nigerians With Meningitis – Yari by Schoolguy9(op): 4:20am On Apr 06, 2017
The Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, on Wednesday denied saying God is punishing Nigerians with meningitis outbreak.

The governor said he never said meningitis was a divine punishment from God for sins of fornication committed by the people.

Yari said he only lamented the paucity of appropriate vaccines to confront the outbreak of meningitis in his state.

He said it was unfortunate because the state does not have enough vaccines yet for the Type C meningitis.
The governor, who made the clarifications through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Ibrahim Magaji Dosara, said he merely asked Nigerians to move closer to God and plead for his mercy to avert further infectious diseases and other health crisis in the state and Nigeria

The statement said: “No doubt, as a God-fearing man, and a Muslim, the governor believes in the powers of Allah to inflict whatever punishment He decides on the human race. However, the governor who spoke in Hausa had a particular audience in mind when he spoke to the BBC Hausa reporter.

“The governor added for example, that fornication ‘should not spread so much in society that it becomes common place and if that happens, Allah promises to inflict, on its perpetrators (people) a sickness that would have no cure.”

“Let it be known too that the governor still insists that all diseases come from Allah and that at no point in his interaction with the reporters did he insinuate that Allah was punishing Nigerians but instead drew from the teachings of great Islamic traditions to buttress the point he was trying to convey.

“This is exactly what the governor said. But because some people are out there to ridicule him at the slightest opportunity and make a mountain out of a molehill with a view to tarnishing his rising reputation, the innocuous statement was misinterpreted and quoted out of context for reasons best known to the authors.

“We therefore use this medium to appeal to all well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the story making the round and condemn the act of unethical practice by those disseminating the deceptive story.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Zamfara State Government in conjunction with relevant federal government agencies is making frantic effort to contain the outbreak of meningitis in the state by taking immediate steps to secure appropriate vaccines for the latest health challenge.

“Let it be on record that the state under the leadership of governor, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, will not abandon the well-being of the people, who elected him to pilot the affairs of the state for any other thing.

“As the saying goes, health is wealth, and the administration will not settle for anything apart from vigorously pursuing the overall well- being of Zamfara people.”

Yari described the situation in his state as pathetic because it has no vaccines.

The statement added: “The governor said the situation was unfortunate because the state does not have enough vaccines yet for the Type C meningitis
“The governor thereafter enjoined all Nigerians to embrace prayers, as God who is aware of the outbreak of the ailment surely has antidote for it.”

*10:43AM*

I was already having difficulties wiping off the beads of perspiration that trickled down my face with my middle finger when I heard someone whispering my name from afar.

"Guy, hurry up!" I quickly said as I realized it was Victor, another of my courseware, trailing the same path I had galloped through,

"Did you hear that the exam had been rescheduled to hold by 8:00am this morning?" He asked as he drew closer to me, at first I was irritated by the manner of the question but I still tried to give my friend a befitting answer,

"No, I didn't hear.." I was saying when he cut me short with another question,
"So, why are you running all through the gate?" he asked.

"I have learnt to burn early morning fats" I chipped in.
"Eh?" he quietly asked.
"Eh, if you like don't hurry up, BIO251 is due to hold this morning" I informed him before I dashed off again.
"Wait! Imiano" He yelled after me as I hurried up to the hall, I was still wondering if the exam had ended when my phone came alive with a recurrent beep,
"Hello" I said into the phone as I picked it, I realized it was Ugochukwu.
"Guy calm your nerves, the exam is has been confirmed to be scheduled to hold by 3pm today" he broke the news to me, rather than being happy altogether, I developed a mixture of joy and sadness,
"Ok" I said, as he ended the call.

"Guy, what is it?" Victor who was now quite beside asked I returned the phone to its eternal place.
"Ugo said they have shifted the exam to 3pm, we should chill" I told him,
"Very good" I had heard him say inaudibly as my mind drifted into a series of reflections, "Who first broke the news?",
"Who confirmed it?"

"Why would they have engaged us in such a higgledy-piggledy in the first place?"

All these I wondered as we slowly rolled down our way to the exam venue which had not even been fixed.
"Our course reps and its assistants should try and give us accurate information at all time if we must survive happily in this school" I managed to say as we arrived the entrance road that introduced us to the science village.

Smasha, another course mate of mine was the first person we saw as we faced the various lecture halls and labs situated at the science village,
"Guy, this one your face is like this, have they finished the exam?" I managed to tease him.
"No, they didn't even hold the exam again, I'm going home" he said.
"To do what?" I asked as I was now calm as he confirmed that the exam had been rescheduled,
"To cook jellof beans" he joked on realizing my prank.
"Hehehe" I chuckled out as I imagined my friend, Smasha, sitting on a table, not chair o, and cooking jellof beans on a lighted stove.
"You would sure look like Kudu" I finally said as we parted ways, I checked my time, it was already 11:00Am. Kudu is another of our course mate who's known to act weird at times.

Thank you.

*6:45 AM*
Tues, 2017.

On a very normal day I would wake from sleep calm, say my little prayers and prepare for the day's hassles, yes hassles, not hurdles but on this day, Tuesday 21, 2017, the gong of the rumour sank into my head as I sprang up from the soft material that constitute my bed, Ugochukwu had called me to announce that a shift has been made on our first semester examination timetable, "What?" I screamed as he broke the news to my auditory malleus.
"Guy, just start coming to school now, a change has been on our time table and the BIO251 has been rescheduled to hold by 8:00AM" he said through the phone. I couldn't hide my shock at the sudden turnout of events.

Bio251 was the course code for a Genetic study course we were due to take by 3pm the same day, while it would end by 6pm but the sudden turnout of things made it to be scheduled for 8:00am.

"Wow" I gushed out as I made for my cold bucket of water, at exactly 3.6 seconds after, I was already done with my bath as the theories of Evolution taught in one of the course's classes turned up in my head.

I could feel Charles Darwin and Jean Baptiste Larmack quarrelling in my head,
"I am the father of evolution" Jean Larmack boasted.
"Who told you?" Charles Darwin countered,
"I stated the theory of evolutiuon based on the theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest in and ecosystem" he continued.
"Ha ha, If you like go and claim that in the exam hall, I was the first person who stated the theory of evolution based on the use and disuse of organs." They kept quarrelling as I pleaded with them to keep quiet, I had to get to school first else I may not even have the chance to down their claims on my paper, I reasoned as I rubbed the last stroke of cream on my palm.

Food was the farthest thing on my mind, I was already at the gate when I remembered that I was not with my hankerchief, "Oh no" I yelled as I made to go back but the echoing voice of Ugochukwu over the phone some minutes ago held me still for a moment, looking at my phone's screen it was already 9:45AM, so I made the hard decision, to leave without a hanky, as it's usually called.

I had not covered the necessary topics treated in the course, so it gave me a halved confidence facing the exam, I had spent most of my tackling some of the courses I saw as the hard ones not minding that the one am to face today prides itself with being the second to the most voluminous course after ZOO201, at that point I wished Jean Larmarck, Robert hooke and the host of others who pioneered works in early genetics and cell evolution would come out physically and commune with me but it's just a wish of the mind. I had to face my fate head-on.

The time was already 10 o'clock when I jumped down from the short bus conveying us to the school, I live not too close to the campus so I had to board a bus to campus everyday.

"Hello, Ugoo" I spoke into the phone as I dialled his line to confirmed the state of things, just then I realized he had not picked, I waited, rather impatiently.

I was already giving up on the call when his hoarse voice came around,
"Imiano, come to the science village, we are there now" he said. With each drop of his words, the rate of my heart beat escalated, could they have started? Have I really missed this course? I puzzled as I hurriedly left the beautiful gate where the short vehicle stopped me few seconds ago.

Every information on my mind was scattered as I hurriedly moved across the tarred ground leading to the inside of the school, I tried to gather some of them and place them in order but that was forlorn hope, the two biology veterans continued their arguments and claims as I galloped down to Science Village (which houses most of the science faculties here) in Unizik, Awka campus.

EducationRe: Five Things I Regret Doing At The University. by Schoolguy9(m): 11:14pm On Nov 23, 2016
Talk2Bella:
A university is a place of learning and so many other things, meet people, make life connections, get pregnant, get carried away, be serious, be unserious and so many others, but mostly it is a place where major decisions which will affect and effect our lives are made, today I will be talking about five things I did while I was still in the university that I totally regret today.

1. I trekked like the children of Israel in my first semester, I schooled in Republic of Benin, and a hundred cefa was like a hundred naira to me, I didn’t want to waste that amount of money on a short distance, I trekked to school, trekked back home, trekked to and fro under the sun and rain and then I became as black as Esau in the bible, till today no cream I have applied have been able to was off Cotonou sun from my skin.

2. Doing free jobs for students, I have never hidden the fact that I am a pure ajepako, I have always been street smart and a street kid and it’s made me the hustler I am today, living in Cotonou is very expensive I no go lie abeg, mum wasn’t sending me money, I was doing house agent work upandan and you know students now they don’t want to pay agent fees, they’d say Bella please do it for us na, na we we, when you get the house we will settle you well, na so I go trek under sun o, knock from compound to compound at the end of the day shishi I won’t see, and so the history of how I became a female Esau continued.

3. Not paying for food or paying less than I ate, mehn I no de carry last, I just eat, stand up and walk away, whenever I feel generous I just write my own receipt and give them, I thought a few of my friends this trick and very soon the whole clique would go there, until we were caught and had to use argument to say we’d pay; well after that day whenever we went there to eat they made us pay first.

4. I didn’t date, my mates were busy finding the love of their lives and all I thought about was where my next meal was going to come from and how to pay my next school fees, I just wasn’t interested at all, I didn’t want any boy to come and beg me the small egusi I brought from home or eat my yam with me and I honestly saw it as a distraction, I finished secondary school very early and gained admission very late all I thought about was just finish and leave, but now I totally regret this who knows me and my bobo would have been going to camp now, but I’m glad I finally found someone.

5. I didn’t keep in touch with 98% of my classmates, by nature I am a chronic loner, my only female friend was my roomie and now we’re very close, I had two male friends and one of them is married now with a kid and my female friend stays in the east so you can imagine when people ask me about my friends what I tell them and what their responses are, this is my nature and a habit which I am trying to break, I am a very sociable person, people like me and want to be friends with me but if you push too hard I feel choked and begin to withdraw and now I have just few friends that I am very proud of.

These are the things I totally regret and a few I don’t want to mention like writing for students but hey! We all got flaws and no one is perfect, I am heading for camp now and I will be better and stronger when I come back.
