Politics / Re: See The Things A Nigerian Man Saw At Asian Shop In Germany(photos) by Schwartz: 5:51am On Mar 17, 2017 |
I live in Germany too. It is very expensive, plus a lot of tough laws to be able to open a store here. If it was so easy to open a business as it is in Nigeria where almost every street consists of a shop; I personally would have opened an African store. There a fewer stores here. To get African food I need to travel miles away. Or I send money home and they courier the food to me. The place we Nigerians see African food to buy is mostly from Asian shops. Africans sell too but they are very few and really rare to see even though we have so many Nigerians residing here. You have to factor in very high rentage, must pay high taxes to government and above all you must have a business licence which is very restrictive and difficult to get. IBO boys are not selling anything here o. Except to buy used things and to export to Naija, IBO's don't own shops here. See very small shaki/towel for 5.26€ that's about 2,400 naira. Our foods are very expensive here. 1 Like

If indeed they could reject your visa then there is definitely more that meets the eye in this matter. I believe that indeed Nigerians are being targeted. My Man and I intend to apply for a short visit visa to the USA from the American embassy here in Germany. I hope we won't face this hurdle? 1 Like |

I didn't know who to believe until I got to the part where Suleiman claimed he opened African shop for her. Opening a business in Nigeria and opening a business abroad are very different. Abroad you need to pass through rigorous paper work and have a lot of money before you can be allowed to start one. Its so rigorous that only few can venture into it not like Nigeria where every Tom Dick and Harry can open a shop. Hmmm.. For Suleiman to have assisted her in paperwork spent so much for her have to have that business then chances are that he DID IT!! e chop d ogbono 1 Like |

I live in Germany and apart from that I have visited 2 other countries. My Mann and I were discussing this issue and we discovered that many reasons could cause this. The average Nigerian has been misinformed that going abroad automatically translates to fast wealth. They believe that no matter the country they go to as long as its 'abroad' that they will hit it really big, send dollars, ships cars to Naija and build imposing mansions as soon as they get off the plane. They travel with this mentality and without making concrete plans to how it will work out. Then they land and then reality sets in. Everyone takes time to settle down abroad. Horning your skills, taking courses, writing exams, passing, getting certified are all steps needed before starting the road to success but it takes time and many people can't wait. Their family back home can't wait. They keep calling asking for money everyday (we get so many requests for money all of us abroad). You send little because you are still struggling with lower jobs and trying to make a headway. Your brothers, sisters, friends, parents, relations everybody hits you up for money, money money. Some can't stand the pressure they then take to crime. There other day my Mann was in a group of Germans and they asked were he was from he said Nigeria. They said your brothers are in Berlin selling meth. Infact that it is only Nigerians that carry that particular drug. He was very shocked. But its true. I have personally passed a street in northern Germany of Nigerians (beside an afro shop)were they sell drugs on the streets codedly in pidgin english. I think some of this people may not have wanted to get to the point of selling drugs but the family and societal pressure back home makes them do it. They want to return for Christmas with a loud noise and people hailing them. They don't want people at home to look down them for flipping burgers at MacDonald and earning little. With 'nothing to show' as we say. Then for a country like South Africa were the citizens are tired of drug dealing from our brothers, its a pity. As far as I know the only job offer available for a Nigerian migrating there is in Medicine(doctors) and lecturers in universities. Every other job is demand by the south African nationals themselves. Many of them are poor and live in villages. Apart from those Nigerians who have capital for business and a lucky few the rest could have no other option than to take to drug dealing and crime. 5 Likes |

justwise:Thank you. I am being misunderstood. I have not said abroad is bad. I also do not advice anyone from travelling. Most people have this mindset that once they touch here they will start picking money and turn millionaires over night. After some years of toiling some people actually begin to do well but many struggle and live from pay cheque to cheque. Some living on government benefits. I have personally met a Nigerian woman who came to my office to beg for money to feed hereself and her child. And for people like this their friends and relatives would feel that they are abroad enjoying not knowing that their daughter is in Germany begging! But I have met so many Nigerians living abroad and there are struggling. There are many people here who would gladly relocate to Nigeria if they can be paid 4000,000 naira monthly. For someone has worked in Nigeria before I am very sure that in addition to the salary the guy is paid allowances as well. He is clearly a millionaire and single. Also from the first post we are told that he has the prospect of growing on the job hence even more pay. Why would anyone give up all that and start life afresh abroad? It beats me. He can apply for visa and comfortably spend his leave abroad. I have relatives who work in Nigeria yet they bought holiday homes abroad. Are there not Nigerians working right there in Nigeria and sending their kids abroad to school paying thousands of pounds and dollars? 5 Likes |

But when you uproot yourself from a business environment you know so well, and attempt to plant yourself in a new environment, especially one that is structured and controlled, the task of success is even more challenging. But I welcomed the brunt, the fire, the baptism of starting all over again…and boy, did I suffer the pain of starting a business in the land of 'white spirits’. No old school boy networks, no existing client base, and no clear understanding of the operational mechanics of the given geographical space. One had to go back to school. One had to work on the side. One had to support his growing family. From being Kese Jabari, a celebrity and renowned designer and label, one became just another African struggling to secure the mirage that is packaged as the American dream, in a land branded as the land of 'milk and honey'. There were moments of doubt... but the good Lord was faithful again. He blessed us, more than ever before, 'with our cup running over'. https://www.nairaland.com/3619921/sabina-umeh-akamune-kese-jabari-mode I have been privileged to be in 3 western countries and I tell you, except you have a job offer already waiting for you, when you relocate abroad you WILL start from the beginning. 400k per month translates to 4.8million naira per annum. No matter how expensive things have become in Nigeria with a prudent lifestyle you can save good of that money and build yourself, you can open a good business, buy land, become a landlord. All those quoting that the money is just 800$ I just laugh. Living abroad is expensive! Forget stories of people making it in 8 months. If true out of say 500 Nigerians abroad how many have been able to finish all certification exams, pass and get good paying white collar jobs? Even at that when your pay cheque is handed to you after all tax deduction how much do you pay for housing, bills etc? Tell us the truth when you live abroad can you truly save much? All the houses and cars abroad people pose with on social media its all got on credit. If you cannot manage with 400k and save and make something good out of your life you can never succeed any where else in the world. Its not easy anywhere, that I am sure. If you earn little then you can come abroad. A very close friend of mine lived in Lekki, drove only brand new cars. With the wau she lived we can conclude that she was a 'big girl', she sold everything and now lives abroad. She does menial jobs now. And lives in a tiny room. The rent she pays per month abroad is equivalent to what she was paying for in Lekki. That is how expensive it is to live abroad. And yes she regrets her decision even with the light, water and all the amenities available. I see so many people take this big step without calculating the risks. Its not greener on the other side. 6 Likes |

ApexTitan:Have you lived abroad before? Or you are just assuming things? He will earn more doing what job exactly? A person on the lowest minimum wage will earn more than 400k equivalent indeed Do you know how expensive it is to live abroad? Do you know what it means to pay bills? Do you pay tax? plus other deductions? How much do you think you will have left as savings at the end of the day? What visa is the guy even planning to use to relocate? someone earning 400k in Nigeria is rich and comfortable. The equivalent of that in dollars wont do much. You wont be rich with that money in Canada. This is 2016 Nigerians should stop having this mentality that once you come abroad you 'HIT" so much money or that you will be swimming in cash. Before you settle down here you will face challenges. Then again the weather there is really cold. Today its 1 degree celcius in Germany, we had to wear gloves, head warmer and the whole winter garbs. Everyone was rushing home. Then to hear that Canada is -46 degree today means that Canada is way way colder than Europe. I cant even see myself enduring that kind of cold. 17 Likes |

Alikote:Don't try it! I repeat DONT TRY IT! I live abroad, I have seen first hand what Nigerians who relocate straight from Nigeria without a waiting job offer go through. You will be starting life afresh. Your certificates and work experience you acquired in Nigeria will have to be put aside. It won't do anything for you. You have to start with menial jobs first. Then gather money and go back to school. Write multiple qualification exams. All these take years. When you are done, if you didn't read a course that is in short supply eg Medical field, IT and a few others you will face rejections before you MAY get a white collar job. For those who read economics, business admin, etc your chances are slimer especially in Germany where I reside plus I believe its so in other places too. Because I know for a fact that Nigerian women take to Nursing in the USA for the reasons I mentioned. Here in Germany the day I experienced -24 degree everyone was shaking from cold even the whites where covered so much, a lot of them were wearing thick face masks. And Shinarambo said today its -46 in Canada. That is very extreme for anyone. The grass is never greener on the other side. Remain in Nigeria, when you want to travel abroad go for a visit, With that kind of salary you earn in Nigeria, no county will reject your visa. I have seen many take this route you are about to take and they are regretting. Before you will reach the same level (managerial) you are now if you go abroad it will take many years and you may never reach it because trust me the whites you going to meet to compete with in the job market are far more educated and skilled than you can imagine. 15 Likes 3 Shares |

As soon as Nigerians begin to realise that flooding the country with foreign goods is doing so much harm than good to the economy, the better for everybody. We need to start producing what we use, its weakening the naira. All the western countries produce for themselves. At this period of recession if we start to become self reliant and productive we cab come out of it |

kingofthejungle:Mr man sit down and think..in the UK for example the tuition for the lowest paying university is around 9,000 pounds. Now multiply that by 500 naira per pound you get 4,500,000. That is, one student paying 4.5 Million naira per year o, just for school fees. Now you are complaining or the infrastructure plus quality of education in Nigeria. You want your school to be the same quality as that of the USA and UK. Fine, but if you're asked to pay just 10% of what is paid over there won't you carry placards and start to protest? Fine in few countries the government invests a fortune into the educational sector. The figures they invest is mind blowing but bear in mind that Nigeria does not have that kind of money. You are only getting what you pay for because quality education is freaking expensive. 3 Likes |
