SEFAGO, you should also understand that success varies. People view certain things as success depending on their life experiences.
For someone who has always been extremely smart, making a B would not be celebrated or seen as a success. But someone who's had D or F averages for so long will see getting a B as a success.

Don't give me that "Chinua Achebe is excellence" talk. Yeah, he excelled in literature but what does have to do with me? lol. I'm sure Chinua can't fly a plane as that isn't his field. Excellence shouldn't be measured by one variable alone. If I achieve something that was previously unattainable, then it's a freaking success to me.
brilliant point chiogo, so by Nigerian standards the mexican guy did marvelously well. Congrat to the guy. And the guy who made 500 naira since he started selling pure water, but made his first 1000 naira one day is a freaking success  grin.

Ok if you didn't see the sarcasm  grin grin grin, but excellence has only two charcateristics, "significant and difficult to achieve," the unattainable to someone is called personal success (like the example I gave you above)

Regardless, I am always very happy when Nigerians do well, I just feel we should have higher standards a bit. I know everything I say would be attacked, but my reasons are justified; the way I say it maybe brash and caustic.

By the way, Chinua Achebe is prolly the most famous african, from my experience, and i am not ibo so no bias. I also proudly boast of Okonjo iweala even if no one has heard of her.

These politicians have no shortage of evidence that America’s poor educational performance is weakening its economy. A recent report from McKinsey, a management consultancy, argues that the lagging performance of the country’s school pupils, particularly its poor and minority children, has wreaked more devastation on the economy than the current recession.
God punish mckinsey, as if the poor performance is the children's fault

just learn to quantify your personal experience instead of generalizing, thats all.
As I said, think what you want, doesn't really matter, the truth remains the truth no matter what

A Bsc is just a piece of paper!! It is the knowledge that matters!
Because a Phd involves a lot of research, he would naturally have to cover much of whatever was learned at Bsc level, where neccesary.
It's not the paper man, its the knowledge that counts.
Agreed.

Politics › Re: Is Pat Utomi An Economist? by SEFAGO(m): 5:51pm On Sep 30, 2009
Phd holder in Political Economics is miles ahead in terms of expert knowledge in economics than an upstart with a Bsc in Economics
errr, depends on what field of economics. A political economist (regardless of Phd) would be clueless about certain aspects of economics that a Bsc learnt.
Politics › Re: Is Pat Utomi An Economist? by SEFAGO(m): 5:47pm On Sep 30, 2009
wouldn't someone with a degree in political economics and someone with a degree in "classical" economics have different specializations? The two shouldn't be compared.
yeah, it would be like comparing oranges and tangerines. Similar shape and color outside, different depths and substance inside. People with political economy degrees take less economic classes in general. I have to say, I have heard the guy talk a lot, and seen him on tv, but he sounded so intelligent that I never bothered with knowing what his degrees were.

he registered at Harvard without any degree, yet. You are not required to register at harvard with a degree- he was planning to go to law school after he finished his undergraduate . He dropped out before he had a concentration so we really don't know what he was planning to study in undergraduate. He could have taken a significant amount of classes while studying computer science.

My main concern is that you are suggesting he never knew anything about computers or studied them, that he was doing law, but he never actually registered to study law.  Harvard doesn't have a law program for undergraduates, I repeat check your facts, read them analytically, and then comeback. Yes, I sound like an idiot if that is what you think. your opinion. Just post facts, not subjective data.

Don't get angry when you get corrected, next time you wouldn't misinform people, making the world a better place grin

Although Gates was interested in computers, he enrolled at Harvard University with the intention of becoming a lawyer like his father. By the time he was a sophomore in 1975, however, Gates was more interested in computers and electronics than in his pre-law studies.

http://www.answers.com/topic/bill-gates

Quote
He enrolled at Harvard University in the fall, originally thinking of a career in law. But his freshman year saw him spend more of his time in the computer lab than in class.

http://www.biography.com/articles/Bill-Gates-9307520?print

Quote
When Gates was found out, he was severely punished, and he kept away from computers for his entire junior year at Lakeside. Without the lure of computers, Gates made plans for college and law school in 1970. But by 1971 he was back helping Allen write a class scheduling program for their school's computer.

http://www.notablebiographies.com/Fi-Gi/Gates-Bill.html
Ignorance parade again. And again  grin grin grin. He isn't a law school dropout. You have to finish college, b4 u start law school in the US, Bill Gates was considering a career in law, after he finished college, considering a career in law and going to law school are two different things. A secondary school student who wants to be a lawyer, and decides not to is he a law school dropout? Check your facts, read them analytically then come back.

Bill Gates is a drop out law student. How many computer science grads can argue with him about algorithms or low level computing?
This is what you said about Bill Gates, which isn't true. I am not obssessed with semantics but this is passing wrong info to people who would repeat the same thing to their friends. And Yes many computer science can argue with him about computer algorithms. He is a businessman now smiley and his knowledge of computers is not at the level it was when he was younger. Also consider, that Bill Gates was right at the corner of the information technology explosiion- being at the right place, at the right moment.

Letz be mature enough to argue out our intelligence and give credit to whom it due.
Figuratively speaking, that expression is wrong, you cannot argue out intelligence.

Sefago and Sagamite should be cautioned on how they trade and sniff out words to each other
I agree, but this thread is boring anyways so why not spice it. Everyone is just saying congratulations, or no congrats and give their reasons, who cares, the guy has graduated and doesn't evn know you exist. grin. I dont blame the person who mentioned her degree from Europe, she was trying to focus on herself, wetin concern her with the person who achieved in Mexico.
Politics › Re: Is Pat Utomi An Economist? by SEFAGO(m): 4:02am On Sep 30, 2009
Thanks once again. I think the case is really simple. If he is not an economist he should prevent/discourage people refering to him as one. I think he also visits Nairaland, or his fans should try and point this to him. I dont have any personal thing with him. He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. He is a public figure.
Not is fault that Nigeria has poor journalistic standards. I dont think he calls himself an economist, the media does
Politics › Re: Is Pat Utomi An Economist? by SEFAGO(m): 4:01am On Sep 30, 2009
Bill Gates is a drop out law student. How many computer science grads can argue with him about algorithms or low level computing?
If Bill Gates, the most successful IT guru of all times doesn't have a degree in Information Technology, shouldn't that teach you a lesson already?
Another guy without an IT Degree is Micheal Dell of Dell Computers!!
Ignorance parade, grin grin grin. Bill gates never finished college, not to even reach law school. His SATs indicate genius level (like close to einstein) so no need for school, also while he was at Harvard he spent a significant amount of time with computers. Bill Gates is an unsuitable example for people who did not finish school and succeeded. Dell dropped out from Utexas at austin, though he was academically so a better example

As for Pat Utomi, I dont think he had any formal training in economics, like classical economics, Not sure what he studied though

Cud u guys please take the beef between the two of u elsewhere and let us have peace. Thank you!
Guess who started it? Not that difficult grin. It isn't beef though since you need two people to fight. Sagamite admires me, and so has decided to follow me. It is like jesus and the disciples. This news is a big deal because it's not easy assimilating into a new environment and coming out at the top of your class with the majority of your classmates.
I do have to agree, with the culture shock and everything, well not mediocrity persay, but neither excellence. Excellence is Chinua Achebe, non-excellence is the rest of us  wink

I actually understand where is coming from- now that I read the whole thing again, although the  thing was a bit jagged, but i think that statement was redundant, but my fault, i should have read more closely, curious, was this a press release or a speech he gave. And second thought is the problem with Nigerian banks really Corporate governance?

An Aboki still remains an Aboki no matter how learned he is. Their thinking faculty still drops to a certain extent.
That is not true- all humans are created equal (not in intelligence, but in the potential to reach heights of intelligence. He is just not qualified for the job, replace it with yoruba, igbo, ijaw, warri na the same Sanusi is doing this the wrong way, especially in a time where everyone has lost confidence in our banking models
Investment › Re: Sanusi At NSE: I Am Surprised People Are Selling Bank Stocks by SEFAGO(m): 8:33am On Sep 28, 2009
I try not to include tribalism in any of my thoughts because I have no knowledge of any hausa person and haven't interacted with one b4 so i cannot judge one ethnicity or the other. But sometimes, some of Sanusi's actions and statements don't display much intelligence. For example:

Did he really say this !!!!

If this economy is going to recover, we must understand that it is not just about money. Money is a simple matter, because, as you know, we print money.
Does he think we are idiots.
