I do actually, I am just bit too sick to explain it. Down with the flu, but since i joined this argument, I would have to follow it. Don't even bother listening to me though, ask a recruiting team for most companies they have target schools that they want people from especially when they are MBA students. At the Top is the really top business schools. they are called the 0 tier, the ones in which Goldman Sachs + all the big firms want to recruit from, u dont dream of working for goldman sachs if u go to these schools u knw u can work for them as long as you have top grades. I won't bother naming names. Its worth paying for an MBA at these schools no matter what anyone says. U are definitely guaranteed your moneys worth. Then there are tier 1/2 schools where the lower half of the companies have their pickings. U have a lot of career options hwever for you to compete with your other classmates at the toppest schools you need a really high GPA and very good work experience. Then we have the lower tier (I nickname them schools you don't go to if you have other options), this include wake forest and all the other schools pass the top 25. These schools dont really give you much of a career edge and very little gain from going to these schools. However, these schools are regional schools, meaning a fortune 500 company would hire them for their office in north carolina or somewhere in the south maybe the Atlanta office but if someone from wake forest tries to apply for the new york office his resume would be drowned by the ivy leaguers. This is a rule of thumb anyways, and very generalized and so deviations may be found. But a deviation does not destroy a general rule. Same thing for law school - Anything outside T14 is a regional school, anything outside top 25 and start praying for a job. |
Anyways not to deviate from the main topic, I think more and more africans should try and attend these school. These schools have good financial aid programs and the ones in europe even have scholarships just for Africans. If you cannot make it to Harvard/MIT/Wharton e.t.c try London Business School, if not try IESE or ESADE. Indians and Chinese people attend these schools in droves and they have reasons for doing so, Africans are still underrepresented in business worldwide, nigerians aren't really known for anything good in the global world. |
kai naija ppl dey vex. I wasn't even thinking abt u or anyone on this forum, relax ur horses. At least if you are going to call me son act mature enough and not like an agbaya. I have multiple business ideas in incubation at the moment and all funds would be going towards the idea, not an MBAWell you proved my statement right again. Your business plans are in incubation not yet successful. When you build a successful business then u can actually talk with pride. I have many business plans myself doesnt mean they are going to be a success. Even kerosene sellers in naija have business ideas. I have worked for companies you can only dream of to consider you with just a Bsc and function with senior executives you hear of in the press who seek my opinion even outside the remit of my role.English. Congratulations u are a boy-boy. Man relax and act mature, u should knw that is an online forum, i dont care about who you work for or where you have worked thats ur business mate. Stop pulling the i am more experienced and older than you crap. I don't dream about working for any company, lol, I actually plan to be in academia. I have warned you earlier to watch the people you run your mouth against, it does not bode well on your intelligence.lol, my intelligence is doing very well. I dont need to prove anything on an online forum. However, when i see people saying something wrong i think i have the right to mention it, |
Ok the problem with this thread is that 1) Most people dont know how elite companies think 2) Assuming the American mentality and nigerian mentality are the same 3) Initiating a successful business is extremely easy. American like to believe their society is a meritocracy but this is never the case. people are still judged by where they go to school and where they live. For one, not everyone is capable of running a successful business. All those people running their mouth about using that money for business, dont even have an idea of what business they would do with it and how to make that money profitable. The so-called entrepreneurs have not started a business themselves and are still employees. Well for us who are smart enough to know that if you want to start a business you must learn how it works, an MBA at a top school would be worth it especially if you plan to work for a top company. No fortune 500 company is going to immediately employ someone with a Wakeforest MBA . |
I heard lots of stuff. they get as many young boys as they can to workDont forget the women who work on wall street ![]() |
hey @afrodoc Listen to me well, dont really waste too much time on stuff like foundations. Those are crap and the likelihood of u getting anything uis very slim. I would advise you to go to each website for MPH programs u are looking for. With your score i am sure you can get into somewhere like Harvard/Johns Hopkins. Do u hold a MBBS/ (medical degree forgoteen what it is called in naija)? Also have u worked as a doctor/intern at a naija hospital. If ur answer is yes for both then u are in a really good position. Harvard: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/administrative-offices/student-financial-services/index.html JHU/MPH: http://www.jhsph.edu/academics/degreeprograms/mph/ |
Yep that is usually where the wall street boys recruit from. The top private equity firms like KKR and Blackstone recruit heavily from this schools also.It is actually very difficult to get a PE gig straight out of college. you need to have worked in an IB division first b4 u culd try PE. Except u are a math genius from one of these schools. |
I plan on getting my Mba with a JD just to be safeMan u get money o. is your dad a politician? |
omo, sefago, i can't even afford to even begin to attempt that kind of trip, its waaaaaaaay too expensive son. I was in the north east a couple of weeks ago and trust me i am not trying to go there anytime soon.Of course man, you know when ever they say anything about "africa" it is an euphemism for saying nigerians . yeah, the northeast is rily expensive, i go to school in the northeast and i spend money as it comes because one expense from another comes. I want to attend the HBS or Wharton one though because i feel it would be a good way of networking, but like you said i dont know where i am going to stay. I might try and stay in a hostels. Check out the recent hbs conference http://www.hbsafricaconference.com/ . But, i like you have money constraints so i am not sure. the only good thing is that i go to school in the northeast.Concerning business school, before the recession, i think it would have been an effective career strategy to take a loan and go to HBS/Wharton because of the long run opportunities. If you can make it into those biz schools, the sky is the limit. Some consulting firms like BCG (Boston consulting) usually pay for your MBA after working as a business analyst for them. They would then fast track you through the compnay if you come back. However, if you check the pedigree of the people that come to a BCG, the majority come only from a maximum of 10 schools. They only recruit at a select number of schools Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Stanford/MIT/ Columbia/Wharton/Williams/Amherst for their business analyst positions. However if you attend a top biz school and you did an undergrad in a non-target school you get another chance at applying to the big-named companies. A Stanford grad, with financial consulting experience for NYSE 100 firms and a CFA.Well they wouldnt be qualified for the same positions in GS anyways. You also have to consider other factors. The bethune-cookman university grad would have gotten a finance internship in his first year at Harvard, at some company anyways and could have performed very well in it. This gives him the experience he need to try out as an associate in GS when he finishes at HBS. ALso if he performed exceptionally well at Harvard, he wouldn't have to apply to GS, GS would look for him. The hypothetical situation is unlikely to happen anyways. Bethune-cookman is a predominantly black university so Goldman Sachs keeps diversity spots and yeah the Bethune-Cookman would be in a pretty good position. |
I am going just got a first class ticket from Immortality airlines. |
Probably they were "over brilliant" to the the extent that they were given a "free ride" through collage UndecidedNot true. i know the schools are children went to and for them to get a full ride they must be really exceptional i doubt anyones family can be that exceptional. They prolly paid full tuition. |
kai the woman is a thief. you guys did not even bother thinking where she got to send 3 of her children to 50,000 dollars schools. |
Yep, you are right. The problem is that there is sooooooooooooooooo much ignorance in our country. Instead of posting this topic for general discusion, they would rather post topic like "can you date a 16 year old?" or "NYSC camp: a woman is toasting me".I dig you. yes that's a big problem in nigeria. it serves some entertainment value though and do enjoy all the yabbing and jokes. And the oil problem, I noticed it too. i am happy people with correct heads are increasing in nigeria. Emeagwali is a small fry though very small fry, and nothing to be proud of. By the way are you schooling the US now? Also would you be interesting in attending the africa business conference at harvard or upenn---they cost a money, but i plan to attend one of them this year. |
