Speaking of Abuja- the most brilliant students I have ever encountered anywhere I go to have been students from LJC. They were all top quality students. Infact the majority of Nigerians in the top schools in the US on scholarships are from this school from what I have observed. I have not seen any school in Nigeria so well represented. So many of them are at Ivies, Top privates and top Publics and Top LACs.

I beg to differ, i think an MBA is good if he wants to start a world class company.
U knw how many Italian leather couches that MBA money can buy to make a world class firm? Anyhoo he can get scholarships no need to contribute to the purse of some of the richest institutions in the world. There are some top business schools that would give scholarships to well qualified minority applicants especially from Africa.
i don't see any Nigerians shaking the world of science and technology, even the so called 'smart' kids who went to Nigeria's most exclusive private schools in Lagos and Abuja.
In time it will happen lol. Lots of smart naija people. Its just that brilliant students do not have the finances to attend top schools at the undergraduate level. And those who school in Nigeria and are brilliant just run and search for oil jobs.

There is nothing wrong with oil my guy. Its just that its not an infinite resource so we should look beyond oil. If Nigeria is going to develop it certainly has to do that by diversifying. Also, you don't have to go to sloan, wharton and co. there are also many good schools that might be cheaper as seen on this ranking.

Katsumoto lol, I was giving an example. You could have a higher cognitive ability, I dont know. My point is that cognitive test tell more than knowledge based tests. The TOEFL is a knowledge based test, and so is WAEC. Trust Nigerians we do well in knowledge based test- isn't it just sitting down and cramming?
PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians, Others Have Low Iqs —study by SEFAGO(m): 2:43pm On Jul 09, 2010
I agree though that the methodology for determining Nigeria's IQ is statistically flawed. There is however nothing wrong with the method used to obtain the IQ of a person. Usually the sample size for most IQ statistics for developed nations is usually in the hundreds which is really not enough to determine a nations IQ.
The notion that there is such a thing as a culturally neutral intelligence test is disputed.[28][29][30][31][32] There are many difficulties when one is measuring IQ scores across cultures, and in multiple languages. Use of the same set of exams requires translation, with all its attendant difficulties and possible misunderstandings in other cultures.[33] To adapt to this, some IQ tests rely on non-verbal approaches, which involve pictures, diagrams, and conceptual relationships (such as in-out, great-small, and so on).
This where the problem lies. Our cultures are really not developed for such level of critical thinking. Thats the truth. Most Nigerians who think critically have been exposed to western culture and thats the truth. If you do an IQ test on juju practises and religious frenzism, Nigerians will be top of the class. I am not worshipper of the west, but I usually analyze things from an objective point of view. Yes, these statistics would be hailed by white supremacist but who gives a F.u.ck about them lol

Una abeg forget TOEFL- its not an IQ test or correlates to an IQ test. An IQ test should typically follow a bell curve IMO- there should be a clear difference between me and say Katsumoto. I doubt me and Katsumoto would score any differently in the TOEFL since we both speak english fluently, but we would definitely diverge when testing our cognitive and reasoning abilities.

Nigeria nearly took last in this test kai
PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians, Others Have Low Iqs —study by SEFAGO(m): 2:12pm On Jul 09, 2010
No the TOEFL is not lol, any i.d.iot can seat the TOEFL and get a perfect score. IQ tests- the closest is the SAT and the british GCSE not A-levels though since A-levels are grade inflated:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence_quotient#Race

Other tests

One study found a correlation of .82 between g (general intelligence factor) and SAT scores;[96] another has found correlation of .81 between g and GCSE scores.[97]

Correlations between IQ scores (general cognitive ability) and achievement test scores are reported to be .81 by Deary and colleagues, with the percentage of variance accounted for by general cognitive ability ranging "from 58.6% in Mathematics and 48% in English to 18.1% in Art and Design".[97]
PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians, Others Have Low Iqs —study by SEFAGO(m): 1:56pm On Jul 09, 2010
The TOEFL is definitely not an IQ test. The SAT verbal is more so and the GRE verbal and LSAT. The SAT has been dumbed down after 1994 so its less of an IQ test right now. The LSAT is the best example of a reasoning test though I do agree that Middle class white Americans and Asians would likely do well in this exams than black people because of exposure. However this is not the IQ test we are discussing here. The IQ test you are referring to would nto be the same one being administered to Nigerians.

Hold on, I would have to bring out the methodology on IQ test statistics although I am busy right now.
PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians, Others Have Low Iqs —study by SEFAGO(m): 1:19pm On Jul 09, 2010
I support your argument wholly. I remember one episode from Different strokes where Willis had to take an I.Q test and did badly. It was found that he did badly because the questions were worded in everyday language that was alien to him. Many African-Americans did badly in IQ tests in the 60s and 70s for that same reason. I don't know whether IQ tests have since been amended but I have read that non-Americans who take American based IQ tests will score higher if the tests were amended to suit their mother-tongue and social situation. How high would Einstein's IQ score have been if he had to take it in Igbo and reflected the test reflected life in the East?
You cannot amend an IQ test to suit a culture. Reasoning should be uniform across cultures. Also your claims about AA is void. Even Middle class AA rarely do well in standardized test.

AjanleKoko:
This thing is right out there with the other asinine post that suggests the blazing sun has fried African brains.

PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians, Others Have Low Iqs —study by SEFAGO(m): 10:14am On Jul 09, 2010
Dede's argument is wrong, another evidence that African's cannot even read critically again:

Dede1:
It is a disgrace to read from Nigerians putting down Nigerians and other Africans on the issue of low IQ. I can not believe what I am reading from these folks who called themselves Africans. No wonder many Nigerians would easily tag someone who can clearly read and write as illiterate simply because he or she is not proficient in grammar.

Again, it is unfortunate that few critics had the audacity to invoke the names of countries such Japan, China and Korea in packaging their illogical opinions. The so-called official languages of these countries are not English, French or Spanish.  Any form of IQ test modality must be tailored not only in their culture but mother tongue.

Anybody who has taken a LSAT examination for Law School in USA must agree that many of the questions have nothing to do with law or academics. My mother will smash any IQ test presented in her mother tongue encompassing daily rigors of everyday life and culture of the people.

Many of us have tangled with so-called IQ test and its formant. It was neither setup in our mother tongue nor embraced cultural nuances that occur in our everyday lives. Ask any American or European IQ questions bordering on Palm-wine Tapper, Calabash and Palm tree, they will appear as lost as slowpoke.
Most IQ test you have mentioned or ones that have semblance to an IQ test such as the SAT, LSAT are of course in english and require reasoning skills . However, the IQ test administered in each countries were adjusted to suit the language of that country or they picked a select group of people. I agree 100% that reasoning skills has a strong cultural bias to it. Nigerian culture and African culture does not encourage independent reasoning skills while Asian and Western Cultures do. Most Africans who grew up in western cultures would be more capable of reasoning probably. No your mother will not smash any IQ test administered in her language. This is because there will not be even enough igbo words to describe the complexity of some of the questions.

Its possible that disease could have affected IQ levels during natural selection but I dont subscribe to this.

EducationRe: Asian Education: Better Than Western Education? by SEFAGO(m): 4:46pm On Jul 02, 2010
I have to say though Davidif is quite correct in that you should spend money on going to an asian school as opposed to a second tier or third tier US or UK school if you are interested in academics. Money is always a big issue to Nigerians studying abroad and you have to dumb down your standards when picking schools because of costs. Usually its either you win a scholarship to a top school in the US in which the competition is intense and you have to be one of the best in your country or you pay for a public second tier school if your parents are not wealthy. The UK is no different where fees are exorbitant. It would be better though to study at NUS than London South bank or East Oklahoma University.

However, I think some of these asian schools are pretty pricey as well

EducationRe: Asian Education: Better Than Western Education? by SEFAGO(m): 4:56pm On Jun 26, 2010
You are wrong, wrong, wrong. Why don't you send your students to be taught by an HND holder? In case, you didn't know, teaching is all about the quality of instruction, if the instructor is an HND holder he would not be as good as a masters degree holder in that same field, why do you think that Singapore has the best secondary school education in the world? its because they realize that a student is only as good as the quality of instruction he gets, that's why they focus on teachers, teachers, teachers. Every teacher must have graduated top of his class and to complement that, he his sent to teaching school and after that he is put under another experienced teacher so that he can apprentice because they understand that knowing something is not the same thing as being able to explain it, especially to students of a different intellectual level than you.
Well incase you are now aware the large majority of introductory classes in the US are taught by TAs- i.e people who have not gotten a PhD yet. Also you are picking an extreme example. As Oyinda pointed out, I meant in the US, and certain countries the school you go to would not be that great of a difference assuming equal ability. I do admit that Investment banks and consultancy firms may discriminate against people from non-top schools initially but things even out in the long run as evidenced by the fact that a large number of CEOs did not attend top schools. undergrads.
ha ha ha ha, more Americans would be forced to go to the engineering field? ha ha haha. You really are funny, i would love to ask my oyinbo friends, the lot of them that study humanities to drop it and go study chemical engineering ha ha ha, or to go get there PhD's in Engineering, that would be hillarious he he he. Abeg stop arguing blindly, the problem with most Nigerians is that they argue to win an arguement and not necessarily to learn new things.
I meant before they got their undergraduate degrees. Please be aware- MIT at the undergrad level is 80-88% American. The large number of Asians are Asian Americans who feel 100% American and would not decide to go anywhere. Further please be aware, all things being equal, most Asians doing PhDs would be loathe to go back home to their country- which can be seen by the low return rate of Asian PhD students. With China's repressive regime and intense censorship, I doubt a large number of chinese students would rush back to china.

If oyinbos are all smart, why is it that they themselves acknowledge that Asians are the smartest?
Really?

a smart student in the US will thrive at Tufts or UCLA just as much as at MIT. which is why you can't objectively say MIT is a better school than Tufts or UCLA.
in india on the other hand, maybe IIT is the only good school they have or one of the very few. and it won't be fair to compare two continents based on just a few schools. we should consider the whole education system.
Well articulated. In the US for the top 30+ schools the difference in student body is not that extreme like in other countries. Thats why its common for people to say- "I have met someone from Harvard and they are not that smart" probably because the expect some demigod lol.

Also IMO, anyone can be taught to be smart at school. You just need to go to class, take notes, cram and sit exams- pretty simple. Everything can be taught lol. I had a lot of asian friends in my undergrad and they were extremely competitive but not really booksmart. Infact most of them who studied the humanities struggled academically and got Cs in philosophy, english, history or government classes but were academic studs in economics, science and math.
EducationRe: Asian Education: Better Than Western Education? by SEFAGO(m): 7:02pm On Jun 25, 2010
YOU KNOW WHAT THE SCARY THING IS? THIS GUYS ARE NO LONGER COMING TO THE U.S IN DROVES ANYMORE BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE OPPORTUNITIES OPENING UP FOR THEM IN THERE NATIVE LANDS. THIS IS VERY VERY SCARY FOR THE AMERICANS THAT HAVE GOTTEN BY ON RECRUITING HUMAN TALENT FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.
It doesn't matter- it just means more Americans would be forced to go into the engineering and science field.

The school makes the student, do you think this kids would have been super students if they went to my high school or they went to the useless universities we have in naija. Also, who do you think it is that does all this crazy research for the Nobel Prize winners? Its the Asians that do the bulk of the work while the oyinbo guy wins the Nobel Prize.
U are a bit wrong here. A smart student would thrive academically anywhere he attends. Schools like Beijing and Tsinghua are highly selective so they get the top brains in their country. Same case for IIT. The problem with schools like Harvard is that they are not really the best in their country. Harvard has a yield rate of 73% (the highest in any undergraduate college) meaning 27% decide to go elsewhere. Harvard also has around 1800 students out of the 2.2 million high school students in the US. Around 1/4 would be "average" (i.e top 5%) but the large majority would be in the upper half of the top 1% barring affirmative action, legacy and athletic admits. These are the cream of the crop and it would make sense why Harvard undergrads dominate nobel laureates. The rest of the top 5% who were not good enough for the elite 5 (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Stanford) will end up elsewhere.
EducationRe: Asian Education: Better Than Western Education? by SEFAGO(m): 6:50pm On Jun 25, 2010
a stereoype. If you are right, then how come the best students in yanki universitities are the Asians uhn Huh? The Indian institute of technology (IIT) is better than MIT and the Indian institute of Management (IIM) is better than Harvard Business school (HBS). The acceptance rate in these [indian] schools is around 2% while MIT and Harvard are around 20%. The funny thing is that the Indian students that are not even good enough to go to IIT or IIM get into the Harvard's and the MIT and are the best students there. Just look at the graduate schools in Yanki, who do you think make up a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge majority of the students? This are the same students doing all this groundbreaking research.
Look at the formidable Chinese schools like the legendary Tsinghua university or Beijing University. The guys from this school go to yanki and they do much better than the yanki students by
LOL, you cannot pull such a scam on my head. First of all IIT is not even close to MIT at the undergraduate level. I have a feeling when you say something is better, you mean it has better students right since you would not be claiming that IIT has better resources or faculty. IIM better than HBS- are u serious? All these claims that people make are just funny.

The acceptance rate of IIT is pretty low I admit, but this has been discussed in several places. It does not highlight the quality of students. I can wager that the acceptance rate of Unilag rivals that of any Harvard professional school. And no, Tsingua and Beijing are not formidable lol. Please engage with a true MIT student and you would never claim they are equal to an IIT student again. The reason why Asians are more in graduate school is because its the easiest way for them to come to America IMO.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria Among Nine Most Illiterate Countries In The World by SEFAGO(m): 8:23pm On Jun 23, 2010
A person is literate who can with understanding both read and write a short simple statement on his (her) everyday life. (b) A person is illiterate who cannot with understanding both read and write a short simple statement on his (her) everyday life.
I think under this definition, 95% of people on NL would be deemed as illiterates lol. Most cannot understand a simple sentence. But seriously though their methodology is heavily based on census data as opposed to direct assessment which would be extremely expensive to perform IMO. We know in Nigeria census data is heavily rigged. I think the illiteracy statistic for Nigeria is heavily understated lol. We are definitely up there.

Brazil for instance has a 90% literacy rate, Indonesia has 92% and China has 93%, yet these countries are listed in the E9.
Ghana with 59%, Nepal with 48%, Senegal with 39% and Mali with 24% are all missing from the list.
Take china for example- 7% of their population is more than the whole population of Ghana lol. Indonesia too. That is why these countries are under the spotlight.
