Car Talk / Top Five Car Model Names by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 11:37am On Apr 23, 2016 |
No, I’m not talking about models for car adverts! There are some car names that I just live to pronounce – even if I don’t actually like some of the actual car models. I just love the way names roll off the tongue. Unfortunately, there’s loooots of them! So here are, first, my top twenty car model names: 1) Elantra (Hyndai) 2) Solara (Toyota) 3) X-Terra (Nissan) 4) Maxima (Nissan) https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/23/my-top-ten-car-model-names/

Twilight Fades To Night. A lot of times, night seems to just pounce like a cat on a ball of string. Sometimes it feels like I just blink and voila! It’s night already. But then there are times it seems to creep in slowly, gradually. Those times you get see day and night in the sky at the same time. You see the moon in the sky just as the sun is sinking in the horizon with a brilliant yellow, orange and red glow, casting shadows and creating silhouettes of everything around. I wish this happened a bit more frequently because it is well, and truly, beautiful. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/15/twilight-fades-to-night/ 1 Like

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: 6 Things You Should Never Wear To An Interview by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 11:17am On Apr 21, 2016 |
I think it depends though. My previous boss told me he nearly didn't give me the job because I "looked too boring". I wore basic black, Grey and white. I mean, that's about as serious and professional looking as colors go. But if HR are looking for someone young, vibrant, energetic and out of the box and you show up looking like you are coming from a Christian wake keep, pretty sure it's not going to do you any favors. So look through the vacancy notice and job description very well. That would tell you what kind of person they are looking for and inform what outfit you wear. |

Suya Nights Ahhh, suya. Who doesn’t love well flavored grilled meat made on the roadside by men who seem to be well versed in the art. This man was certainly a master of his art and watching him go about his business was certainly a wonder. Fun to watch. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/11/suya-nights/ 1 Like

Nairaland won't kill me. The title of my story is abok1 (substitute the "1" with "i". Which one is northerner again? Since when did aboki become a bad word bikonu? Edit: So I had to go through the entire post and replace abok-i with abok1. The story now feels different. |

“Abok1!” “Sah!” The thin, wiry young man soon showed up, panting and out of breath, like he had just run the London marathon. The distance between his post at the gate and my car was hardly exhaustion-worthy. “I’m about going to work. Someone from a delivery company is supposed to come drop something off for me. I want you to collect it, sign and keep it for me till I get back, okay?” “Yes, sah!”, Abok1 replied, nodding vigorously, like an agama Lizard on steroids. I looked at him doubtfully. This wouldn’t be the first time I had given him instructions. It could, however, very likely be another in a long line of instructions I had given only to return to find out something else entirely had been carried out. Unlike his “brother” Bello (as at last count, he had at least thirty other “brothers), who always took time to ask questions if he didn’t understand instructions, Abok1 was all energy. It seemed his life motto was action first, questions later. And the results ranged from hilarious to cringe-worthy. Once, I had come to his shop beside the building entrance to buy a tin of custard. After looking around his shop and determining he didn’t have any, I asked if he could go buy from further down the street. The words had barely left my lips before Abok1 grabbed the money and dashed down the street at lightning speed and I thought – now that’s a man dedicated to his job. Imagine my surprise when he returned less than a minute later with a plastic bag filled to the brim with 250 Naira worth of coaster biscuits. “Abok1, na who tell you say make you go buy coaster?” I asked, part appalled, part astounded. “You, oga.” Abok1 replied, breathless. I ended going to buy the custard myself. Or once when I was home on leave and found myself afflicted with a nasty stomach ache, I dragged myself to his shop to buy Andrew’s Liver salts, a popular antacid. “Abok1, you get Andrew’s Liver salts?” Abok1 looked around the shop with the concentration of a JAMB candidate. “Walahi, I no get Oga.” He pronounced, eventually. An entire roll of the thing was hanging beside a strip of Peak milk sachets, right beside his head. “Abok1, no be the Andrew’s be that?” I responded, thoughts of my predicament having fled me for the moment. “Dis wan?” He pointed at a pack of Cowbell Chocolate. “No, there.” I pointed straight at the antacids. Abok1, paused, then followed my finger’s direction. “Dis wan?” It was GO-90, a local insecticide he pointed at next. I sighed. Was he subtly telling me to go and die? “That one!” Abok1 looked at me like I was going crazy. I stepped into the shop and slapped the roll of Andrew’s. “This one, Abok1, this one! Hah!” “Ohhhhhh, I no know say im be dat.” I groaned. “No worry.” I said, walking away. “Stomach no dey pain me again.” https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/19/aboki/ 1 Like |

I don't even care if he has been compromised or not. At 82 years, I'm surprised you still expect him to be making noise on your behalf. If your grandparents or parents are alive, how come you're not pressing them to do the same. It's a man that has spent his youth, his adulthood and even a chunk of his old age speaking on your behalf that you're still waiting for to still do so. Be there o. Keep waiting. Even after he dies, you can keep waiting for him to come back to fight your battles. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Sleek On The Street I’m not the biggest car lover but I certainly appreciate beautiful cars. Spotted this while taking a walk recently and could only take this shot before it zoomed off so I can’t tell what brand or model it is. A friend says it’s an Impala. Shadows In The Sand Streetlights cast some of the best shadows. Each time I walk home, I play a little game with my shadow (I know, I really shouldn’t be doing that at my age, but it’s fun!). I watch my shadows lengthen as I walk further away from a street light and watch it fade as I walk closer to one and I try to figure out at what point the shadow is longest and sharpest and what patterns I can make out in my shadow. This picture was one of such points. It’s a fun game. You should try it sometime. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/07/shadow-in-the-sand/ 2 Likes

Off To Find Fuel I spotted this young man on a bicycle just as he was setting out in search of what has become the most precious commodity in the country today. And it made me realize that all around me, people were embarking on the very same search – the man in the background with an equally large keg, even the little girl further down was lugging a keg of her own. We always say the hustle is real in this country but now, the reality is hustle. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/07/off-to-find-fuel/ 2 Likes

Lights Of The City Nights. I’m not sure what inspired me to take a picture of this scene, the twin buildings – which are amazing in their own right – or the illumination coming from within and around them. They’re the kind of lights that are simply pleasant to look upon in the night city skyline, the lights that tell you there’s life going on around you. They seem to just burst forth from the midst of a sea of darkness and remind one that yes, the city is still very much alive. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/05/lights-of-the-city-nights/ 2 Likes

Brilliant. Ahhh, the sun. Equal parts supporter of life, equal parts torturer of exposed bodies. I’ve always been fascinated with what the sun would look like up close, seeing it in all the glory of it’s majestic brilliance. Since that can’t happen any time soon – at least without being roasted to oblivion, I’m resorting to the next best thing, taking pictures of the sun when it’s not playing hide-and-seek behind a canopy of clouds. It’s brilliant….. And it burns!!! https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/05/brilliant/ 2 Likes

I may not be big on BMW cars, but whoever parked this seems to be on a mission to make me a convert. This ride is beautiful! And the paint job is just perfect. Nights Will Guide You Home There’s this feeling I get almost every time I see these lights. For me, they are not just illumination. They are also direction, pointing me homeward, guiding me to my place of rest for the night. And the sidewalk seems to work in agreement with them, stretching all the way, lit up with the promise of relief from a day’s worth of stress. These lights don’t just light up the road. They light me up inside as well. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/04/nights-will-guide-you-home/ 1 Like

The Overcast I always anticipate rain – well, almost always, it doesn’t do to get all drenched when I’m out and far from home without an umbrella! Still, whenever I see these grey clouds that carry the promise of nature’s shower, I feel this rush of expectation all the way to when the first, tiny drops make their way down to make sweet music on the roof – or on my head. It’s simply beautiful. https://greysweaterdude./2016/04/04/the-overcast/ 3 Likes

tonybosses: I'm not a fan of roadside parties and shops that play loud music. In my opinion, both should be banned outright. However, neither is the subject of discussion or the bill, and if you feel strongly enough about it, feel free to take it up with your local representative. Bear in mind that, the constitution gives room to public preaching without hindrance. It doesn't, however, give room for you to constitute a nuisance to other citizens. They also have rights. It's well within their rights not to be disturbed by your preaching regardless of their religious affiliation and this bill partly seeks to address that. They say no man is bigger than the constitution (law) We've been hearing of plans to islamize Nigeria since time immemorial. In all this time, at least 70% of our presidents and vice-presidents have been Muslims. How come it is still yet to occur. When will you guys just accept it's a conspiracy theory promoted by people who aren't comfortable with the fact that someone in the seat of power is a Muslim? Sir and about your street preaching,if you are a christian, you agree with me that, evangelism is a commandment from God (as stated in the bible) you never can't tell soul that has been saved from the preaching. Do point out where it was in the Bible that Jesus went about with a megaphone disturbing the public peace? What stops you from meeting people individually and talking to them. You think one saved soul is worth God knows how many other pissed off souls? Individual evangelism respects your right to evangelise and your listeners right to agree or refuse to listen to you. You shouldn't take that right away from them by force. |

Anagha123: My brother, the certification for Christian pastors and religious leaders would be in the hands of the recognized umbrella bodies for Christians in Nigeria. Nobody is asking them to go back to seminary. Even within the Redeemed Church, pastors undergo training periods and are vetted before they are put in charge of any congregation. People don't show up one morning claiming they have inspiration and start holding services. As a result, you can see how organized the Redeemed Church is, that at least someone knows you were put in charge of people, knows you underwent training and instruction, knows your Creed won't cause problems and methods won't be problematic with society. That is the civilized way to do things. Why can't that be applied across the board? |
Politics / Re: El-rufai To Suleiman: Mention The Day I Will Die by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 9:29am On Apr 04, 2016 |
tonybosses: My brother, it is noise. Public spaces are meant for everyone regardless of religious or tribal affiliation and everyone is free to use them the way they want, so long as they don't disturb others. What if someone who doesn't want to listen to your message owns a shop I'm the same motor park? Should he/she relocate because of you? If you approach people individually and talk to them, you give them that choice of agreeing or refusing to give you audience. By using a loudspeaker or megaphone, you are taking that choice away from them by force which is ultimately a breach on their rights as equal citizens of this country. There’s used to be this man that would walk up and down my street every morning by 6:30 am, preaching with a megaphone, and waking people who want to get that last bit of sleep in before they have to drag themselves up and go to work or school before they want to. The funny part is that majority of the residents of my street are Christians and he was eventually banned from entering the street by the street chairman. You know the ironic part. The street chairman is also a pastor. 1 Like |
