xynerise: @op. What qualifies one to be an Osu? God did not create anyone unclean so why are u still believing that fetish story? Gosh! Some Nigerians are still primitive undecided
The truth is self evident that clarity of expression precedes clarity of understanding.
Did I say that 'I' still believe it?
Or was my post cryptic or esoteric?

Mrs..Chima:
I am not sure if all Igbo villages have the same mentality because my husband states that most people are driven out the village into the city and are forbidden to come back to the village even their children aren't allowed to visit.

Is that the same for all Igbo villages or just specific ones?
I agree, it's that there are still striking similarities that exists in degree...

Things like this can be convoluted and tortuos.
In Igbo land some people are regarded as outcasts with its concomitant and attendant consequence--discrimination. And this continues from generation to generation. In some parts of Igbo land, it is one of the important things to check during inquiries about your partner.
It is believed that relating with any of these pariahs marritally or otherwise will bring untold hardship and mishap to the person involved.

The advent of Christianity has made efforts to reduce this scourge through re-orientation and education-- that such things are mere superstitions.
Legally, it has been abolished in Nigeria.
Now, imagine being in a relationship with a person only to find out ultimately that he/she is a pariah, 'Osu' as we say in the Igbo.
The execrable part of it is that your family can see this as an impediment if they still hold tenaciously that such people are cursed and shouldn't be related with.
So what would you do should you find yourself in such a dire melee?

excel4sure: Foreign Trained Laywers do better in Nigerian law schools than Nigerian trained laywers.Do you agreed?
I diasagree in toto as empiricism has shown that foreign students are seldom attuned with the system and none of them has ever proven any mettle or achieved any enviable feat at the NLS, either by winning awards or otherwise as to lend credence to your assertion.
May I also add smartish that LAW is no science, and it subjectivity makes those trained at home more susceptible to success than those trained abroad, save in extreme circumstances.

Additionally, whatever you cannot change, try as much as practicable to accept it with equanimity.
Also avoid comparison as there will always be someone that is sexier, more beautiful, taller, richer, more intelligent person.
By the same token, it should always be remembered that the world is like a ladder there will always be people at the top and beneath.
Shalom!

To my mind, there is no hard and fast rule about this, as circumstances and practicalities will make a particular cause a wise one.
What about just maintaining casual friendship with the opposite sex, one that will be bereft of entanglements?

EducationRe: Secrets Of First Class Students? by Serendipity: 3:38pm On Feb 06, 2012
RentInVi:
This tread is interesting. i think i would like to add my 2 cents. I have almost forgotten i graduated with a First Class, been quite a while.

I think the second post on this thread almost spoke my mind. I guess first class candidates do think alike after all. But if i could make a first class, then i believe any one with a 2.1 today could as well.

I think i will start by saying i am normally a 2.1 candidate. I should not be a first candidate. I have always been in the top 10 to 15 in my Primary and Secondary school. I only had 7 A's and 1 c in my WAEC result ( i took 8 subjects, avoided languages). Mind you, the A's were not really A1's.

But when I got to Univ of Ibadan to study Engineering I was told that first class in Engineering was for the gods. That was the begginning of my motivation.

I made it my sole priority to graduate with a first class in UI. Nothing else mattered or so i thought.

These are some of the things i did.

1. I prepared for every course from the day the semester began or even before it sef. i got lecture notes of my seniors and always photocopied the relevant text books so i can have my own copy at all times. ( i could not afford to buy text books). i could never understand how people prepare for and pass exams two weeks before the exams. infact i think they are genuises. becos i could never do that.

2. i listened attentively in class. i never sit in front, but i dont sit at the back either. oftern times the Lecturer would say - dont bother about so and so, most people in the class would not even hear that and still go ahead to read those areas. i dont always read all the chapters of the text book. i concentrrate on areas where i believe the questions would come out and leave areas that i dont is important. i dont think its gambling, i think its strategising. it worked for me 99% of the time. there was just this one time i was so shocked by what came out that i got 40 on the dot in that paper. that would have been my first failure. needless to say, i continued with my strategy.

3. i had no time for women, clubbing, parties, or the like. not becuase i was religious/holy or anything but more becos i did not have the money to tag along. spent the little money i had on books and food. Girl friends were too expensive to have grin.

4. know your reading style. i could never read overnight. i spent five sessions in UI and i never once read overnight for any exam. my reading time was strictly 8pm - 12 midnight . sleep and then resume 5am - 7am. that was what worked for me. i remember those days when we wake up and see people coming back from overnight reading, we all use to envy then but most never came out with good grades. i also could never read in the UI library or even the hostel reading room. My bed was the most comfortable place for me to read and thats where i read all through my stay in UI.

5. Believe in yourself and constantly assume various scenarios of what ifs. what if i score an A here and a B there. what impact would it have on my cgpa

6. your first year is very important. you need to start well, buid on it and also finish strong. I ended my first year with a cgpa of 6.0 and graduated with a cgpa of 6.4 after 5 sessions.

7. on the issue of interest, u must have a minimum intereest in wht you are doing or u wont be motivated to study it. i went to Ui to study petroluem engr but ended up with mechanical engineering. i had no interest in it at the start but i had to generate the interest to survive.

8. Put God in everything.

I hope this will motivate someone to graduate with a First Class, and if that be the case, then i would have made a difference in someones life. like i said, if i could do it, then anyone can.
Yours was poignant and pithily expressed.

The ever enviable institution that moulds and transforms her children into academic, social pundits and grandees has once more done it.
I also join in the felicities of those seriously serious students that have distinguished themselves among their peers - by graduating summa cum laude.
It's indubitably a no mean feat.
Their fastiduousness and assiduity has ultimately paid off.

Our pedantic pedagogues, usually in a desperate bid to gratify their futile ego, never cease to point out other people's gaffe and peccadillo, even when such is superfluosly unnecessary. The worst is that sometimes, in pursuance of this, they ignore their own faux pax.
One even had the temerity to ask whether the poster attended secondary school at all. Such brazen act of imropriety and discourtesy should be frowned on.
Corrections are best made in such  a way that they be constructive and don't denigrate the person to whom they are directed.
