Most of them are women. Changing your religion in order to be married to a man whose religion allows him to take more wives, divorce you anytime by saying a few words, and to beat you when you disagree with him, is unwise when the punishment for leaving the religion is death.

Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Atheists by Seun(mod): 9:50pm On Jul 09, 2017
ameri9ja:
The question is wether Mohamed encountered a supernatural being. I don't know how u can possibly argue he didn't if you know anything about his history and how he was deeply traumatized and changed by the experience.
Do you believe that the Prophet encountered a supernatural being? If so, what supernatural being do you believe he encountered?

It is easy to tell what parts of the Koran were inspired. They came complete and perfect, you can't add or subtract a word, which is why it can't be translated without losing something.
Can you list the verses of the Koran that you consider to be inspired? And by inspired, do you mean that they were actually dictated by God?

I said most enduring religions were initiated by an encounter with the supernatural.
How do you know this? We must investigate the major religions one by one to determine if your bold claim is true. Starting with Islam.
Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Atheists by Seun(mod):
Ameri9ja, please you need to stop repeating yourself in different posts. This is known as spamming. wink
Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Atheists by Seun(mod):
ameri9ja:
1) Here are some of the "proofs":
**Prophet Mohamed, totally and copletely illiterate, was able to dictate the whole Koran, which he said was put on his lips by a supernatural entity he encountered while fasting in the caves.
Claims of the Prophet's illiteracy may have been grossly exaggerated, but even if they are true, being illiterate only means that you cannot read or write. An illiterate can be creative and have a good memory.

The Prophet composed the verses over a period of many many years, memorized them, and taught them to his friends, who also memorized them. This is exactly how most societies passed on their traditions and myths from generation to generation before writing became a thing. There is nothing remarkable or supernatural about this.

His claim to have met a supernatural entity are easily explained as untruths. Many of his revelations are obviously self-serving such as the one permitting only himself to take more than 4 wives when he wished to do so, and those promising rich rewards to young men who died in battle when he was in need of fighters.

If you believe the Prophet's revelations came from a supreme supernatural entity who created the universe, then you should be a Muslim. Why are you not a Muslim?
Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Atheists by Seun(mod):

Thanks again, Seun, for taking the time and for Nairaland. Sorry about the delay in reply, you know how it gets. 1) So u say u can explain prophesies and other supernatural stuff. Go ahead and explain, we are all ears. And while u r at it, also explain to us how u know for sure that anything exists outside yourself, in other words how u know that all this is not happening only in your head.
Name the single "supernatural" phenomenon that you consider to be the most impressive and difficult to explain, and I will explain it to you.
If you want to talk about prophecies, tell me about the most impressive prophecy that you have witnessed and I will explain it to you. This is not to say that there is nothing I can't explain, but the most common phenomena that people consider to be supernatural are easy to explain.

2) Remember I said I'd be more inclined to believe you. It is a matter of probability. Be honest, who would u be more inclined to believe: someone who is supported by thousands of people over thousands of years and all sorts of supernatural stuff OR someone who says he is guessing there could have been a big bang out of nothing, while admitting he knows absolutely nothing about 96% of what he is guessing about!?
The popularity of a belief is no indication of its truthfulness. You have to know why people believe what they believe. If the reason for a belief is sketchy, it is unlikely to be true. If the reason for a belief is sound and reasonable, it is likely to be true. We humans are very gullible as children. We tend to believe, and continue to believe, whatever our parents tell us during our formative years, whether they are right or wrong, beneficial, or harmful. Through this mechanism, religious ideas have been passed on for centuries, despite being incorrect and harmful.

3. The question is: is it possible, in this our universe, to KNOW something and yet not be able to explain it or give proof about it?
It's certainly possible to think that you "know" something without being able to explain it, but such "knowledge" is unlikely to be accurate.

In conclusion, I believe this our reality was intentionally set up such that it is impossible to fully understand it's true nature and be able to logically or scientifically explain it, while still in it.
This is an idea that you cooked up because it fits your existing beliefs. You've not taken any steps to determine whether it's actually true or not.

What is the ultimate meaning of life?
That's really a terrible question. Meaning is a human concept, not a natural concept. Meaning is something we create. Something we choose. It's not something imposed upon us by a fictional creator. The question you ought to ask is, "what should we do to find fulfilment in our lives?"

HegenIkomkeh:
Oga with due respect i must tell you, you're simply a joker! How can you suggest that faith in God is "false belief"?
Muslims believe that Christian beliefs are false. Christians believe that Muslim beliefs are false. Atheists agree with both groups on that issue!

ALAYORMII:
Why don't you carry ur own cross and let anyone that wants to believe in anything that pleases them be.
Because false beliefs cause real harm. For example, if you truly believe that you can fly, you might jump off a skyscraper and fall to your death.

WORLDPEACE:
Seun, this "probably" is what many atheists don't like to say. Many seem to think that to not be sure equals ignorance, so they absolutely have to hold on to a belief. It is a flaw in both atheism and theism. People need to teach themselves to be comfortable to admit that they do not know. When we do the opposite, the result might be harmful to us and those who look up to us.
The vast majority of atheists have no problem with admitting that they don't know for sure that no God exists. Sometimes we get tired of using the word "probably" in every sentence, just because it's repetitive, but that's no excuse for misrepresenting our actual position.

OLAADEGBU:
If as atheists say, God doesn't exist
God probably* doesn't exist.

and life has no ultimate meaning
Atheists don't say life has no meaning. Who've you been talking to? Human beings have the ability to create meaning in their own lives.

why then do they get so passionate when it comes to fighting biblical Christianity? Why do they care?
Atheists care because they are decent human beings who feel sad that their fellow humans are investing their precious lives in false beliefs.

Oh sorry but I doubt ud get any proper response since atheist, just like theists, hate when their beliefs are questioned beyond their mental capacity. Ironic isn't it? They're guilty of the exact thing they condemn all believers for- blind belief! Lol. They are very logical until they have to get illogical to support their logic. Lemme explain: standard science law of causes and affects is suddenly benched to argue that there was once a "Random" big bang out of "nowhere" that started time, space and evolution. See what I mean? Lol
Scientists don't know where the concentrated ball of matter that exploded at the beginning of time came from. They are very clear about that. Very few people are saying that it "came from nothing" or that it was "random". Nobody knows whether "something" preceded it or not.

The big bang theory is not a dogma for atheists. It doesn't interest me as much as the theory of evolution, for example. But when theists claim that God is the only explanation for the universe around us, we have to point them in that direction. Cosmology has very convincing explanations of how galaxies, stars, planets, moons, etc were formed through the natural laws of physics, for example. If only it wasn't so boring.

To answer ur question tho, the subject of God is complexity, as only religion posits any kind of practical explanation. But we know, from history, that religions can't be trusted due to their mostly contrived ideologies. This "made up" nature of religion is what disqualifies it and it's claims, at least for an intellectual mind.
Thumbs up!

Science on the other hand tries to be as investigative as possible, until they have no more leads and resort to stalemate hypothesis disguised as theories. This is where science fails too.
Sometimes scientific educators are a bit over-zealous; presenting hypotheses based on limited evidence as if they are hard facts, but most scientists will freely admit that some so-called theories that are really just hypotheses e.g. that wacky theory about infinite universes.

Seun, I don't trust your definition of Faith. Let me check Merriam Webster dictionary
FAITH is a strong belief or trust in someone or something
Definition 2b from that dictionary says "the firm belief in something for which there is no proof." That's the kind of faith that Christians have. There is clearly no proof or objective evidence that the basic doctrines of Christianity are correct, yet most Christians firmly believe them.

Looks like a potassium deficiency. It shows up in the oldest leaves which turn yellow and then brown starting from the tips and edges. You can get potassium from the water-soluble fraction of wood ash, relatively large quantities of banana/plantain peels, or a synthetic fertilizer.

Atheists are usually highly intelligent people and because of that they rely too much on logic and science. The big blind spot they have is their failure to see that the human condition and much of the universe cannot be explained by science and logic. Prophecies, intuition, miracles, warning dreams,
This is your key mistake. We can explain prophecies, intuition, miracles, warning dreams, and most of the other "supernatural" phenomena.

As for what u wrote, if you claim u created the universe, and there are all sorts of supernatural things that back up that claim and many people over thousands of years testify to encounters with you, I'd be more inclined to believe you than someone who says maybe a big bang happened from nothing.
Actually, with your kind of thinking, I don't have to perform supernatural feats to convince you that I created the universe. I just have to make you believe that I can perform supernatural feats. I just have to be a competent but unethical magician, who pretends that his tricks are real. The testimony of the people who wrote scripture is unreliable because people used to be extremely gullible in the pre-scientific era. There is a story in the bible about Paul and his companion being worshipped as gods because they were bitten by a snake and didn't die. Imagine that!

I was a guest on nairaland for so many years, my abode then was the culture and politics section. But later i noticed some monikers were no more contributing.. I didn't quite understand until recently when laudate addressed the issue, he said many complained about the mods not being fair.

The thread that was deleted was so important that i had to call the attention of my friends that were not on nairaland to it... For God's sake that was a thread were people contributed intelligently without insulting minority tribes.. Infact we had meaningful contributions from people from other tribes. People like Efewestern and yungmilli contributed, and for once i was able to understand the itsekiri's angle to an oduduwa nation..

What's nairaland's priority? Do you want threads were people will contribute and parents will tell their children to visit the thread and learn more about their region, tribe? Or you want threads were we keep insulting the hell out of each other?

Today, Many people are tribalists on nairaland not because they wanted to but because the mods didn't do their job in the first place. There was no level playing ground, this disgusted me a lot, Of course many of us couldn't have sat down and allow some mor.ns insult the hell out of our tribe in which many of us hold dearly.

This is the Internet, if we keep replying hatred with love, war with peace, insults with moral talks, many years from now, our children will be left ashamed of their fathers and mothers when they later come across threads were igbos were abusing their tribes or telling lies and their fathers couldn't refute anything. . .Our fathers instilled cultural and ethnic pride in us but it's a pity that today Many yorubas don't have pride, our fathers dream was for an independent country and not the one Nigeria nonsense people like sarrki preach all about.. Our fathers wanted development and unity of the yoruba race... You are first a yoruba man before being a Nigerian.

Seun needs to redefine the vision and mission of nairaland.. if you want a nairaland where numerous threads about Nnamdi kanu forming Slay Queen upandan are gracing the front page or threads were people of thoughts discuss the future of their tribe and development.

Do you want a nairaland where we continue shouting Igbo and afonja without making meaningful contributions?

Do you want a nairaland where half of all topics on the politics section is about Biafra, igbos whereas topics that tends to form ethnic consciousness devoid of hatred are being deleted?

Do you want threads of people that ought to be in the shadows but trending on nairaland over gucci?
