99.99% of investments that promise fantastic returns are scams. The remaining 0.01% are guaranteed failures.
Any investment that promises above average returns without explaining exactly how the money will be made is a scam.

You're the first person to report that the solution didn't work. Sorry about that. You should try clearing your browser cache and running the command "ipconfig /flushdns" as well. If none of the solutions work, then you should try using a different browser or using this url to reach the home page: www.nairaland.com/home

InvestmentNigerian Bank Stocks: Bull & Bear Case by Seun(mod): 2:48pm On Feb 28, 2013
There is a bull and bear case for Nigerian Banks and i will make both cases below. Take your pick

BULL CASE

Nigerian Banks valuations while expensive on a Price to Book basis, still have a lot of growth ahead which will make these valuations look cheap in 2 - 3 years.

There are millions of unbanked (CBN says 70- 80 percent) adult population who will be needing financial services in the future and whom these banks can serve with a healthy profit margin.

AMCON has brought stability to the system, yes there is no more 60 - 70 percent credit growth, however the banks are far from utilities.

There is a wall of money from offshore investors flooding into these banks, (due to QE in US,Japan and EuroZone) meaning even if u think they are expensive at these prices, they may not come down for you to nibble on them, so you might as well start accummulating.

Bond yieilds are dropping so equities are becoming more attractive.

Banks can still squeeze out profits from cutting costs, through technology and if the power reforms work, from lower energy costs.

BEAR CASE

NIM have peaked for these banks. They used to get one year t-bills for close to 20 percent in January 2012, now the CBN just sold T-bills last week at less than 10 percent.

Banks are expensive, GTB is trading at close to 3 times book value, thats because once you start valuing banks as growth stocks, you get into trouble.

Bank earnings follow the Interest rate cycle. The next leg in interest rates is down. meaning earning should begin to drop from here.

It all well and good to say banks will transition to consumer or retail lending to compensate for falling yields on T-bills and bonds, however that is fraught with its own difficulties and risks of ballooning NPLs.

Nigerian banks cost structure is still too high.

Banks have gotten most of the easy business, meaning in spite of Nigerias huge population of unbanked every incremental customer means lower margins.

pure123: bought FIRSTBANK and BAGCO
Interesting. Why BAGCO?

Yomieluv: I bought Transcorp shares,am disappointed, vow never to buy anything shares again.
Am investing my money now to play Baba-ijebu,and other lotto,I know one day,I will win.
Eyah. One of my friends, an accountant, suggested that Transcorp is good buy a few months ago due to the value of the hotels they own and the assets, so take heart, your losses maybe reduced in the next few years!

scopusng: I bought Union Diagnostics worth 5Million then but the bad thing is that as at moment the value is nothing to write home about.I cannot even get anybody to buy.Never again with naija stocks.God punish dem.
This is the first time I'm hearing about that company. What attracted you to their shares? Lets discuss and learn!

Sunny_bobo: Bought FCMB @3.20 in September last year, sold same @5.20 about 3 weeks ago and used the proceed to buy ETI @ 14.12
Bought Skye @3.51 around September last year and still holding
Bought First bank @11.53 in June last year and still holding. Will probably hold this one for a long time.
I think you should be congratulated because you started buying shares at the right time. I notice that you've bought only bank stocks. How come? Do your feel Nigeria's banking sector has better prospects than the rest of the economy, or are you a banker committed to investing in what you know best? Why did you choose those banks rather than the more popular ones e.g. GtBank. What made you pull the trigger?

Caracta: During the boom, i bought from firstbank, accessbank, Daar communications and conoil. When it crashed, i was dissapointed. I still have them though. Not ready to sell. The dividends can be annoying...too insignificant.
@Caracta: thanks for sharing, I think not selling after the crash was a good idea. If you wait long enough (3 to 5 years) you may still make a profit on the stocks. What made you decide to invest in those 4 companies specifically? Was it because you believed in them, or because they advertised public offerings around the time you were looking to buy shares?
InvestmentWhich Nigerian Stocks Have You Bought Or Sold? by Seun(mod): 1:48pm On Feb 28, 2013
I know a lot of people bought stocks on the Nigerian Stock Exchange during the stock market boom a few years ago and failed to sell before the crash. Others have started buying stocks recently due to the gradual recovery of the stock market over the past year or so, and due to the very recent crash in the interest rates you can earn from FGN bonds and tbills.

Personally, I didn't buy any shares during the boom because I was so busy and didn't have any time to learn how to estimate the true value of a company from its financial statements. Due to not being a gambler by nature, I refused to buy stocks based on the mere expectation that the prices will continue to rise indefinitely.

Can you tell us about the NSE shares you've bought, when and why you bought them, how much you bought them for, the stocks you've sold, when and why you sold them, how much you sold them for, the ones you still own at this present time, and what you plan to do with them in the future? Lets get this fun thread going!

Logicboy03: Glorifying a psychopathic killer? lolz. Calm down. This is satire. Dark humor. I wrote this as a joke.

Unless you want to make the argument that one should not make jokes with 20th century mass-murdering dictators. That would then prompt me to point you to numerous hitler parodies on youtube
Of course, you can make any kind of joke you like, but if your goal is to promote atheism to religious people, you should know that this joke achieves the exact opposite of that. You presented Stalin as an atheist, which reinforces the notion that atheists are amoral devils. You then presented a scenario where your atheist killed a Christian and a Muslim, which feeds the persecution complex that I mentioned earlier.
