Never ask people to post their emails. Rather, post your email and ask them to get in touch with you.

werepeLeri: who doesnt get spam mails - hundreds of them on a daily basis? whats this doing on the front page?
If spam mails are delivered to your inbox instead of your spam folder, that's not ok.
If many Nairaland members are facing this problem, that makes it home page worthy.

Another tip to limit this problem is to avoid posting your email address in public locations such as mailing lists & threads.

Don't do that. You should upload the image to a special image directory and just store the filename in MySQL.

We use MySQL for the social graph and it works just fine. Twitter does the same, and so does Quora. True story.
ComputersRe: Spam Mails Every Day In Yahoo Mail! by Seun(mod): 6:34am On May 25, 2012
yamakuza: Like i said earlier, you can filter them into a folder/trash based on a keyword they all contain eg "travel", "casino", etc (or by sender).
The spam filter selects spam messages based on common keywords they contain, but it's based on actual statistics and designed to avoid false positives, so that when your wife sends you an email about travel arrangements, or your best friend makes a joke about casinos, it won't end up in your spam folder. So keep marking the spam messages, and eventually the spam will stop coming. Also, check your old messages and mark all the spam mails as spam mails because the spam filter probably assumes that any message you opened and did not mark as spam must by alright.

Not exactly. I started (& stopped) work on it early last year, but I had to hire jajad to work on it with me full time around December 2011. He resigned in March and this month I hired kadeerna to continue where he left. I tend to work on the DB structure, cool & challenging features, performance optimization, and UI tinkering, but my hard-working guys actually implement most features.

Dude, just mark them as spam messages. After you mark a few, the spam filter will start detecting them automatically. I'm shocked at the complicated suggestions given earlier on this thread.

What I meant is that we're still kinda trying to figure out whether to have a symmetric model like Facebook or an asymmetric model like Twitter and what privileges and features should be attached relationships on the forum. We currently have friending and member following as completely different features.

ComputersNational ICT Policy Discussion With Mr. Saheed Adepoju by Seun(mod): 12:24pm On May 23, 2012
Mr. Saheed Adepoju, the CEO of Encipher Ltd - Nigeria's most well-known tablet manufacturing company - was invited to join the committee for the finalization of Nigeria's National ICT Policy by the honorable ICT minister, Mrs Omobola Johnson.

Since this policy could affect all users and providers of ICT products in Nigeria, I've invited Mr. Saheed Adepoju to give us updates about what's going on in the meetings and how we will be affected and also to perhaps provide the other members of the team with insights about what we think about the decisions they are making.

The draft of the ICT Policy has been made available, so you might want to read it first. That's the starting point. Cheers!

Nairaland GeneralBoard Following & Member Following: New Nairaland Features by Seun(mod):
With New Nairaland, you can follow topics you didn't post on and un-follow topics you're no longer interested in, even if you posted on them. We've recently added two new features related to that:

1) Board Following: You can now follow boards you're interested in. When new topics are posted on the boards you're following, they will be added automatically to the list of topics you're following. This feature is especially useful for keeping track of less popular boards like programming, food, & islam for muslims.

How to use: Visit the board and click on the (Follow) link. Click on it again to stop following the board.

2) Member Following: You can now follow members who post good topics, regardless of whether or not they are your friends. When the members you're following post new topics, such topics will be added to the list of topics you're following. This is useful because some members post good threads, but refuse to friend anyone. Others only 'friend' people they know. With member following, you can follow any Nairalander anytime, without having to wait for them to approve you.

How to use: Visit the members profile and click on the (Follow) link. Click on it again to stop following the member.
ProgrammingRe: Code Reading is as Important a Skill as Code Writing by Seun(mod):
You are right, but let me add this: reading Python code is easy. That's one of the reasons why I picked up Python. You can read through most Python libraries and understand what's up, even if you're new to Python. Reading idiomatic Python code doesn't require any skill at all, because everything just makes sense! Reading Python code is like reading pseudocode, except that you can run it.
ProgrammingRe: Unit Testing by Seun(mod): 3:33am On May 23, 2012
I've never been able to value Unit Testing, even though a lot of people swear by it. I believe in reducing the number of lines of code in a project but Unit Testing creates more code that must be debugged and updated. I also feel Unit Testing probably doesn't catch bugs that span across units. I find that writing code carefully eliminates most errors, and for a web application, you can catch the remaining bugs by simply watching the error log. Writing code carefully involves using straightforward algorithms and writing them elegantly. It means understanding exactly what your code is doing instead of randomly changing things until it seems to work. However, a lot of smart people swear by Unit Testing so there's must be some value to it; perhaps it's more important in large teams.

Better Apps like the Facebook App are free, so very few people would buy a Nairaland App. Very few Nigerians are in a position to buy apps. They don't have the means of payment, and even if they could pay, why pay for a Nairaland App when Facebook, Twitter, Skype and other social network apps are free??

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for expressing your support and sharing ideas about how to make things better. I understand your frustration with Nairaland's measured pace of evolution and the pragmatic but unconventional direction we've often chosen to take on certain issues. I'm working hard to overcome extreme limitations, but I'm also learning as much as I can so we can make a lot of progress once those limitations are lifted. thanks so much for caring.
PhonesAirtel, Etisalat, Glo, & MTN Statement On NCC Fines by Seun(mod):
A STATEMENT ON THE FINES IMPOSED ON AIRTEL, ETISALAT, GLOBACOM AND MTN BY THE NIGERIAN COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION RELATING TO THE NETWORK QUALITY

Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom and MTN would like to jointly issue a statement concerning the decision by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to sanction all four operators for failure to meet Quality of Service standards.

We would like to assure customers of all four networks that we are committed to providing high quality of service to our customers. Over the last ten years more than N 1 trillion has been invested in building and enhancing the four mobile networks. In 2012 alone, the four operators will be spending over N 400 billion of further investments in their networks. All four operators are actively competing with each other on quality of service to win the loyalty of existing customers and attract new customers.

We are all equally frustrated and concerned about the failures to meet customer expectations and needs with respect to the quality of service. Nigeria deserves and needs first class telecommunications networks. We thus apologise unreservedly to you, our customers, for those occasions when you have been disappointed or inconvenienced by a lapse or failure to deliver the requisite level of quality of service. We however believe that it is necessary to explain the major challenges we face as operators and ask for your understanding and support.

The main factor affecting quality of service is the absence of a reliable source of power. Every single site is powered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by two diesel Generators and requires regular supply of diesel as well as 24hours security protection. We need to recognise that benchmarking quality of service against countries which are not operating in such an environment is unrealistic.

The second major factor affecting network quality are frequent cuts of fibre networks which link the cell sites. These are frequently malicious in nature. Recently, operators have asked that Telecommunications Infrastructure be declared “Critical National Infrastructure” which would result in enhanced protection for these assets and criminalize the wilful damage of the same.

Another equally worrying development is the recent trend towards indiscriminate closure of sites by Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal, State and Local Governments in pursuit of multiple taxation of telecommunications infrastructure.

Finally, the issue of security is a prevalent threat from our operating environment. We have had particularly unfortunate instances where our employees have been physically assaulted and in some instances killed during site maintenance visit, all in a quest to sustain service quality.

We wish to use this medium to call on the NCC, the National Environment Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, the Minister of Communication Technology, the National Assembly and the Office of the National Security Adviser to work in harmony to put in place an environment in which we can continue our substantial investments in pursuit of delivering world class telecommunications networks.

While we continue to make these investments which will also improve service quality, it needs to be pointed out that in the telecommunications industry, such investments do not yield the requisite improvement in service quality until well after 12 months. We are therefore concerned that fines will not bring about the desired service quality improvements or offer a lasting solution but will merely deplete essential resources that would otherwise be deployed for network roll out.

Also, due to capital-intensive nature of our operators, we are concerned that a regime of sanctions will inevitably erode the confidence of financial institutions and critical partners in the industry. We are also concerned that it could create an atmosphere of anxiety and regulatory uncertainty which is unattractive to investment. We are therefore actively engaging with our Regulator to resolve this issue.

Solutions being explored include ensuring a forward-looking quality of service framework, taking into account pertinent environmental factors affecting service delivery and preserving the capacity of the industry to attract the requisite levels of investment in infrastructure to meet stakeholder expectations.
Nigeria deserves and needs world class telecommunications networks. No sector in Nigeria has seen more progress than the telecommunications sector. We ask for the understanding of all stakeholders as we continue to invest and build the networks to the benefit of all Nigerians.

Signed,

EducationUnilag HOD E. A. Bassey Dies Of Heart Attack by Seun(mod): 10:41am On May 21, 2012
Just a week after the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, died of a heart attack, University of Lagos has lost a lecturer in the Department of Creative Arts, Chief E.A Bassey.

Bassey died on Saturday of stress, old age and heart attack

His death threw the institution into a fresh round of mourning, as it was still making arrangements for the burial of the late VC.

Bassey's death leaves question marks, whether an urgent need for the review of the retirement age of lecturers and civil servants in general is needed, and perhaps compulsory, regular check-ups, and a review of the medical profile of aging lecturers will also be a good idea.

Bassey had served as head of the department and senior lecturer at the department before his death.
