TV/Movies › Re: I Can Solve The Problem Of Movie Piracy by Seun(mod): 3:35pm On Mar 09, 2007
Ok, I see the problem. The problem is that most of us are petty pirates.

When you want to attack piracy, you do not start by attacking the end-consumer, because there are too many of them and that will be bad PR. You attack those who are making money through piracy first. You attack the commercial pirates that mass-produce VCDs and dump them in the market at ridiculously low prices. When those ones are in jail or busy paying their hefty legal fines, then you can start educating petty pirates like the average Nigerian.

If there is no pirated VCD in the market for petty pirates to buy, they will be forced to repent. Piracy won't be worth their time and effort at that point. They won't be so desperate because they're not making money from it.
Business › Re: Help Me. I'm An Adwords Advertiser But I Dont Know How To Find Niche Products. by Seun(mod): 3:23pm On Mar 09, 2007
You're putting the cart before the horse. You need to evaluate the demand for all your business ideas before deciding on the nature of your business. How can you brand yourself as an "adwords advertiser" without a niche?

I don't think you can find niche products through the internet. What stops the suppliers from using Adwords too?
TV/Movies › Re: Invest In My Movie by Seun(mod): 3:21pm On Mar 09, 2007
Try to reduce the hype "will change the industry" and focus on the substance you have to offer.

Is your movie yet another local romantic or crime movie, or is it something different like action or comedy?

What is your budget like and how do you intend to produce it? Tell us more about this investment. wink

TV/Movies › Re: No Award-Winning Movies From Nigeria: Why? by Seun(mod): 9:40am On Mar 09, 2007
Let's discuss the piracy issue here: I Can Solve The Problem Of Movie Piracy .

As for movie theatres, the main problem is that people don't have that movie-going habit anymore. Once upon a time, in the US, people trooped to movie theatres every week to watch whatever was being shown. So there was no need to advertise a new movie - just distribute it to movie theatres and you make your money.

But today, people have television and home video, so in order to get them into theatres you have to pay huge amounts of money to tv stations. A movie that costs 50 million to produce may take another 50 million dollars to get people in to theatres. This makes most movie unprofitable until they are released on DVD and television.

Previously I said DVD was pure profit. That was not true, but the cost of producing a Hollywood DVD and shipping it to distributors is nothing compared to the cost of promoting a movie on television. And once a movie gets into video stores and retail chains like Walmart, you don't really need to advertise it on television. Because in a retail store, the advert is the packaging. That is true as long as people have the habit of shopping for DVDs.

However, there's one area that is actually pure profit. Selling cable TV and broadcasting rights to your movie.

So back to the issue of awards. Based on new logic, I agree with you guys that awards can help to sell a movie. However, this doesn't mean that we should spend huge sums of money for the purpose of winning awards. Because at the end of the day, you might not get the award, and you will face financial ruin.

Rather than targeting international awards that you may or may not win, why not target international distribution i.e. money? A clever movie with a niche audience may win awards, but won't make a lot of money.
Politics › Re: Opinion Polls Will Discourage Election Rigging? by Seun(mod): 9:18am On Mar 09, 2007
Can you remember the Silverbird "Who Nigerians want to be President "
poll. Chris Okotie lead according to the polls.
That poll was definitely rigged because handsome Donald Duke led every other poll, online and offline.

how exactly does it help to checkmate rigging?
If the results of the polls are very different from the election results, one can infer that rigging has occured.

When it comes to Bill Gates ? I would reccomend reading up maybe like a book on how he became so Rich ? Was it his skills for computers or the skills of Buissness that helped him ?
It seems as if you can't read what I wrote above, so I'll repeat it. I said it's his business sense that did it.
awyers can prosecute, but cannot deliver justice. lawyers can prosecute but cannot enforce the law. This sounded like Naija we are looking forward to living in. As for now, e no dey possible to stop piracy.
That's a typically Nigerian response: giving excuses instead of pushing for a simple solution. The Nigerian legal system works pretty well against non-political criminals if the prosecutor has enough money to push forward.

If a pirate fails to appear before a court when summoned, our police will only be very happy to arrest him (and loot his property in the name of searching for evidence). That favors the filmmakers, so let's stop giving excuses.
Nairaland General › Re: What One Thing Would You Change About Nigeria? by Seun(mod): 8:34am On Mar 09, 2007
If I could change one thing about Nigeria, it would be to make constant, cheap, public electricity available to every Nigerian!
I have changed my mind in the two years since I posted that. NEPA should be broken up and privatized.

You have nothing to worry about because Nigerian whizkids never drop out (they're forced to study medicine).
Career-wise, I believe that a lack of business sense is more costly than lack of a higher education.
That's the difference between say Bill Gates and the thousands of other computer whizkids who went nowhere. wink

Would you prefer it if they don't pretend not to be racist? If they openly abuse you?
And if they happen to be racist, is there a potion they can take to make them no longer racist? Are they doomed?

Being an entreprenuer sometimes involve employing people!
As an entrepreneur, you don't have to employ people. You can make use of contractors, consultants and freelancers.

how many people have you employed sef
I hired an assistant, but after a week of trial I decided to release him to other employers (with one week pay).
I've made up my mind not to try to employ anyone for a while. Instead, I'll use contractors and freelancers.

Business › Re: Hot Air Balloon Business In Nigeria by Seun(mod): 9:35am On Mar 08, 2007
The Internets are full of free ideas. The development of that idea into a business is what cannot be stolen.

Supposing I have 40,000 dollars (which I don't have), will I really spend all of it on importing an expensive hot air balloon when I don't have faith in the business? Would someone who has 40,000 dollars not have ideas of his own? Come on. Why would I as a risk-averse investor want to waste all my money on an unproven idea?

Only after you start running the business, and people can see you making money, will they start copying.
