ComputersRe: EFCC Ban On Night Browsing In Cyber-cafes by Seun(mod): 4:27pm On Sep 13, 2006
The debate is over. Once a cyber-cafe is registered it can resume night browsing. It's just a way to make them register. The EFCC is not under the illusion that such a ban will eliminate cyber-crime.

Does anyone here know how much capital one needs to have to start a small TV station in Nigeria?
EducationRe: Most Expensive University In Nigeria by Seun(mod): 4:10pm On Sep 13, 2006
Rich people who would have bribed their way into public universities will now have private universities to go to. THis will free up space for poorer students. It is in the interests of every student for there to be as many universities as possible in the country. All intelligent people are in agreement on this.

"Overprivatization" is responsible for the acceptable level of secondary education in Nigeria. We want more.

Wait until it becomes impossible for you and me to get NBC licences for direct-to-home TV. You people don't understand politicians. They are experts at robbing Peter to pay Paul and keeping a fat commission.
PoliticsRe: Economic Development In Africa by Seun(mod): 3:34pm On Sep 13, 2006
in fact, the worst part of the arrangement is that africa has no control over the prices of her goods
We are free to double the price of Nigerian crude oil if we want to. It's just that no-one would buy it. And do you blame them? Why should someone buy Nigerian oil for $110 when he'she can buy it at Saudi Arabia for much less?

If you want to blame someone for the "low" price of oil, blame the Saudis and Russians for having "too much" oil. Wait a minute, we are guilty of the same crime! Somewhere out there there are oil-producing countries complaining that oil prices will be higher if AMericans buy oil from them at $11o instead of buying it from us at $55.

Do you get what I'm trying to say? No one sets the price of oil. You can set any price you like, but if you don't set a price that is right, no one is going to buy it. If Americans demand a price that's too low, we'l sell to someone else.

and those she imports.
We have 100% control over the prices of the goods we import. Let me explain:

Don't forget, first of all, that importation is a private sector business. Traders (human beings like you and I) are the ones who convert their naira to dollars to try to import various items to satisfy local demand and make profit so they can import more tommorrow. They are free to demand lower prices, but if the prices they demand are too low, they will not be able to import anything. If the prices the sellers demand are too high, they won't buy anything either.

So you see, no one "sets" prices in the real world. If we were to "set" the price of oil, it will be maybe $1 billion per barrel and cocoa will be $1000 per bean. But if we "set" such prices, no one will buy from us. On the other hand, the people buying our exports will like to have it for free, but for the price of $0.00 we will definitely refuse to sell anything. In the proces of negotiation, a price somewhere between what the buyer wants ($0) and what the seller wants ($9999999999999999.99) is agreed upon eventually through bidding and negotiation.

No one can control a market, not even the super-powers of the world. If they could not prevent CHina from thriving, they cannot prevent us from thriving specially when international trade happens to be a win win proposition for both the developing nations and Africans.

The are only two major problems in Africa right now: war and politicians.

BusinessRe: Hire Purchase Business by Seun(mod): 11:11am On Sep 13, 2006
You can auto-debit someone's account monthly true, but one thing you need to know is that, nobody would agree especially in a country like Nigeria for a third party to have rights to auto-debit his account monthly.
How would you know? Do you live in Nigeria? We can speak for ourselves, thank you!

I think proper financial knowledge and background is needed to pull this off, not just the desire to run the business.
"Proper" knowledge is easily obtained by someone with the desire to make money from a business.

Another thing is in developing countries that have credit facilities, there are {{blah blah blah blah}}
Whatever they have, we can easily get in Nigeria if we see the need. If Roscodaddy talks to potential customers and they express interest, then he can go ahead and do whatever needs to be done.

We intend to collect 30% as down payment and we will stretch out the remaining balance over a period between 5 and 7 months for every item.
How much will be the interest on the item? I just need an approximate figure, thanks.
ComputersRe: EFCC Ban On Night Browsing In Cyber-cafes by Seun(mod): 11:01am On Sep 13, 2006
You cannot trace scammers via their IP address because most ISPs use dynamic IP addresses. Each time you connect, you get a different IP address. Ironically, The only ISPs that use fixed IP addresses are those that serve cyber-cafes.

So you need extra software to link the ip address to a phone number. Even then, can someone trace you with your phone number?
TV/MoviesRe: Stripping Of Exclusivity Rights Of DSTV By The Government by Seun(mod): 10:52am On Sep 13, 2006
We never had competition in that industry.
To a businessman, this is fallacious. DSTV competes with local TV stations. For example, we activated our DSTV subscription this month, and yet yesterday evening we were all watching Gulder Ultimate Search. That shows that local content can rival foreign content in popularity if properly created and promoted!

If DSTV has exclusivity rights for broadcasting of most foreign programmes, I would get exclusivity rights for broadcasting of local programmes, and then promote those programmes until they are more popular than the foreign ones.

Sooner or later, DSTV will want to show those local programmes I have exclusivity rights to, and I will tell them that I can let them broadcast the local programmes I have rights to if they let me broadcast their foreign ones.

The local cable operators just want to copy DSTV's programmes instead of thinking of their own. Shame.

What right does DSTV, a South African company have to obtain rights for independent countries such as Nigeria?
What right does Nairaland, a Nigerian site, have to obtain website hosting space in independent countries like USA? What right do computer village vendors, Nigerians, have to purchase rights to computers from independent Asian countries like Taiwan and China? Can you see the problem with that line of thinking?

When you buy something, it becomes yours regardless of which country you comes from. When Multichoice bought exclusive broadcasting rights to certain programme, they got the right to own those rights.

BusinessRe: Hire Purchase Business by Seun(mod): 10:03am On Sep 13, 2006
That's a great idea. People with stable salaries would not need hire purchase for inexpensive items like phones, but for laptops and more expensive gadgets I guess they would find that useful.

So, let's say I want to buy a 240k laptop. How much will I pay per month and for how long?

Christianity EtcRe: My Sister-In-law Committed Abortion: Now She Needs My Help by Seun(mod): 9:50am On Sep 13, 2006
If her life is in danger, you should help.

If a woman came to Jesus for healing after committing abortion, would he turn her back? No!

So please help your sister-in-law because that's what Jesus would do.

Your sister-in-law committed abortion. That's past. Presently she needs help. Help her.

Compassion is part of the divine love, isn't it? Now rush out and help, please, before something bad happens.

TV/MoviesRe: Stripping Of Exclusivity Rights Of DSTV By The Government by Seun(mod): 9:28am On Sep 13, 2006
Who determines whether an advantage is "undue" or not? Let's call a thief a thief.

This is like saying someone took "undue advantage" of low prices in the market to buy enough foodstuff to last for a month. I'll be like, "isn't that what people are supposed to do?"

This is like saying an inventor "took undue advantage" of his brain to obtain a patent to the detriment of others who were not sharp enough to come up with the same idea before it was patented.

What people don't understand is that once you invite the government to deal with your competitor today, tommorrow the government will be dealing with you. Politics will win and business will lose.

DSTV's competitors should have used their funds to take their own "undue advantage" of made in Nigeria sports programmes, reality shows, Nigerian movies, etc and show them to subscribers.

Business is a game that's best played without the government's "assistance". When you win it with your own intelligence, you feel more fulfilled and you get to keep your profits instead of using them to settle politicians.
PoliticsRe: Why Do You Think Many Nigerians Do Not Vote? by Seun(mod): 8:48am On Sep 13, 2006
I think we should try our best to vote and encourage others to vote.

But before that, we should be active in promoting the candidates that seem to have good intentions.

Debt collection will make your lives hell if you don't know something I don't know!

Nigerian debtors are more unreliable than NEPA. They can be relied upon to default.
