Then to the Med Lab peeps, Please I'll like to ask? what is the role of a MBBS pathologist in a medical lab, cos I'm yet to be convinced of their relevance? |
Family › Re: Why Are The Allied Health Confusing Themselves? by seunH: 10:34pm On May 01, 2021 |
ThatPetiteChic: As an allied health worker who has worked in teaching hospitals, doctors are the problem we have. If only we can all stay in our place without interfering into people's jobs. Few years back, in one teaching hospital in the east, pathologists sidelined the scientists including the HOD by doing their jobs. It was a big problem.
In UBTH Ophthalmologist are doing the work of optometrist. I mean no single optometrist in UBTH, not even an intern (I dont know if they've stopped that practice).
It's so bad that if you go to their private clinics, most specialist(doctors) hardly employ health workers in their field because they believe they can do both jobs.
Some fields of allied health are not properly recognised in teaching hospitals. They restrict your scope of study. E.g Optometry includes diagnosis and therapeutics just like in the US(you can check that online) but in teaching hospitals, they restrict them from doing all of that.
What am I saying? Doctors started this rivalry because they needed the extra income. Now, other health workers have joined the race because of money. The medical doctors have a strong association, they can strike at any time but when last did Johesu go on strike? Imagine paying doctors COVID 19 allowance and not paying other health workers when everyone is at risk of contacting the virus. I'm not saying we should all collect the same amount of money but when they increase doctors salary, they should do the same to others. You just entered the medical profession so you shouldn't judge from what you're told. Well said ma, you didn't even mention some of us who have basic medical science degrees (Anatomy/Physiology/Pharmacology) whom are now about to be thrown out of medical school. Imagine as an Anatomist, Drs are telling us that even with Msc and PhD we still need to have MBBS in order to enable us lecture in our own department in medical school. Forgetting that eminent Anatomist like Prof Keith Moore didn't even have MBBS background. It's so sad!!! |

I believe at this juncture, I'll have to step in. I want to implore both parties especially @zeeknow to stop this bickering. There is no profession that is not important or does not have a role in the scheme of events. "MLS is useless, MLS is useless" but you cannot get a confirmatory diagnosis without a medical lab report !!! "MLS is useless, MLS is useless" you cannot be admitted for surgery without a medical lab report and can not even be discharged!!! "MLS is useless MLS is useless" they form an important component of ANC. My point is that, there is no profession that is not important in the scheme of things, if these professions were useless they would have naturally gone into extinction. However in as much as all these professions have their roles, we have what we call "professional heirachy" or you could say ranking. For example, no matter how highly educated a MLT(Technician) graduate is, he/she cannot be placed in the same level or above an MLS (Scientist), that is what is called professional heirachy. Professional heirachy is determined by many factors, some of which include 1) Duration of study 2) Credit load of course 3) Impact of the profession in the scheme of events etc. In Nigeria today, the professional heirachy in the human health profession include the following 1) Medical doctors, Dentist and Optometry+/- 2) Pharmacist+/- 3) Medical Lab Science/Nursing/Radiography/Physiotherapy etc 4) Basic sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology etc 5) Technicians: MLT, Dental Technician, CHEW, X-ray Technician etc. At close observation, you would observe that I did not include Veterinary medicine, that is because Veterinarians are not under human health workers rather animal health workers, that is why there are not part of Johesu and even when going on a joint epidemiological survey for example during Ebola, Bird flu pandemic they come under animal/Veterinary component. But the wisdom behind it, is that 2 captains cannot sail a ship. If Veterinarians are under human health, who would then sail the ship because as far as professional heirachy is concerned, Veterinarians are at the top of the food chain, same heirachy as Human doctors (as shown in the publication above), whether we feel they are relevant or not, it is what it is. In conclusion, I would wish for all these bickering to stop, everyone is important in their own respective ways, let's concentrate on making our respective profession more useful to the society and we would see that respect would be a natural sequalae!!!! |

Pasi: Doc, thank you for your numerous advice on this platform. Recently, I adopted an adolescent male Rottweiler and noticed that he scratches himself every now and then. On a closer look, I observed things that appear to be dandruff. The dog loses some hair perhaps due to the scratching. Pls, I need your advice on a quick intervention to save the dog from the condition. Good morning sir, I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I'm suspecting mange. I'll suggest you get Armitraz bath and bath your dog with it every 2 weeks, then you can get to a clinic and let a professional administer Ivermectin injection for you, if not possible then you can stay with the Armitraz. Meanwhile, ensure your environment is also clean and separate infected dogs from non infected ones |

Sorry please Iet's get something right here, there is a difference between when students voluntarily withdraw their studentship based on many reasons like lack of interest, poor grades, better alternatives etc and when a student is actually FORCED to withdraw from the faculty, I'll like us to take note. In Nigeria only few faculties forcefully withdraw their students from their faculties example is Dentistry, Vet med, Human med and some few others. Majority of the other faculties run a course unit system where you are allowed to carryover, have extra year etc provided your GP is not less than 1 point, even with that, you'll be on probation. So let's try and put thing in proper perspective, I'm seeing almost all the courses in Nigeria on this thread and it's like some people are using it as a status quo to boost their courses status. Let me give you an instance, most Anatomy students wanted to study Mbbs, even after offered admission, most will still write another jamb to go to other faculties esp to Human medicine. Now if we have about 80 Anatomy students in 100 level and by 400 level they have reduced to 30 which many may be due to voluntary migration to other faculties, it doesn't necessarily mean the department is harsh!!!!! |

Zeeknow3245: Thank God you've went through my Post. I won't pretend Veterinary Medicine is in its average point in Nigeria but it is a course that makes you an entrepreneur and very versatile. Veterinarians work in Agro industries (My chief concentration). We don't play second fiddle in our profession. We are the boss of our fields. Even Animal Scientist trying to show their face know their boundaries. At Least in my profession my Tussle is with Animal Scientist and I don't get to play second fiddle. In the Nigeria Centre for Disease and Control (NCDC) have a unit for Zoonoses where Veterinarians man the department. The Veterinary department of ABU in conjunction with FUTMINNA was given a contract to build ventilators and they did spectacularly well. We produce a substantial amount of our Drugs and Vaccines in Nigeria which is used. We have our own Postgraduate college with several specialities involved and we don't need the approval of any Health Professional. We are a branch of Medicine and it is globally accepted. In the UK, the newly released sorted health skill is Veterinary not even Nursing, your internet will do you good. Many states Pay Veterinarians CONMESS in case you don't know check. We have quarantine department all over the federation where we monitor Animals and Animal products. We are Licensed to import drugs, serums, other products and Animals whereas Pharmacist imports drugs, serums for humans only. Medical Doctors respect us in their own light. The top Renowned African Virologist is a Veterinarian incase you don't Know. We can decide to take of Farm Animals or pets. We work in Zoonotic facilities all over the Federation. Now as a Nurse what can you do with your degree aside treating People? This is very insightful |

I know you mean well, but you don't understand my replies... If you go back and follow my replies, you'll find out that i was only quoting from @sgtponzihater1 comments, i was trying to correct his claims.
I ask again, can you point out where I used MBBS to back up BDS?, or can you point out where I said that MBBS and BDS are the same?, or where I Said we are one?
I Have countlesslely pointed out in most of comments that 1. MBBS and BDS are different. 2. MBBS are the traditional "medical doctors". 3. Dentists are doctors.
if you go through all my comments from the beginning without sentiments, you'll find out that the above ^ points is what i've been trying to prove.
mentioning MBBS, doesn't mean that i'm using them to cover my profession, i'm not an MBBS, and I see no reason why I, or any BDS should Use MBBS to project our profession, when MBBS are not even qualified to do our job. we are proudly what we are, we are dentists, doctors of oral health.
go through all my comments again ~cheers As you wish sir, I rest my case and I wish you the best!! |

i made up all the replies to correct fallacies against my profession, because those fallacies can mislead people.
i'm BDS and i'm proud of it.
why not take time and read all i've posted, before saying anything? My chief, please kindly show the world the beauty of your profession without mentioning MBBS simple!!! that's what I'm trying to say. Education › Re: My Medical School Experience- The Fighting Spirit by seunH: 4:34pm On Apr 15, 2021 |
DiazDDS: @sgtponzihater1
the problem you're having is quoting the UK tradition in a Nigerian forum. There's no tradition in Nigeria that says "dentists are not doctors", even it the UK, dentists are doctors, but "un-recognized", few dental schools there, give out the "Dr." title to dentists, since dentists are not recognized as doctors there(for practicing a branch of surgery), they are warned to use their title appopraitely, in order not to be mistaken for physicians(UK Traditional doctors).
to another part of your point "medical doctor", yes, dentists are not the "traditional medical doctors"(physicians). Because they graduate from a dental program rather than the "medical", but not withstanding a physician(INTERNIST) holds an MD(Doctor of Medicine, in internal medicine). What actually qualifies him as a medical doctor is the degree(MD), and also mbbs. dentists are also qualified to use the term "(medical doctor of the mouth)"=(dental doctor), because some dentists also hold a DMD=Doctor of Dental Medicine. Please sir, stop all these!!! you are further degrading your profession with all these analogies. A dentist is A dentist and a Medical Dr is A medical Dr simple. Sir, Dentistry is a beautiful and well respected profession all over the world and does not need MBBS to survive. When you make all these kind of analogies, you make it seem like dentistry cannot stand alone without been related to MBBS which further degrades your profession. |

LordPherule: 10 days ago, I lost my pet cat to cold hands of death in the process of the runnings at my goat farm. I haven't been stable at home for much care. Thou on that fateful day I embark going to farm, I unfortunately locked him inside. I don't know he's sneaked inside, whereas I don't have pet door, dangerous, other reptiles might come in via it. On my arrival on the 3rd day, I found the cat inside mewing. I quickly boiled a big fish for him just to pet him (biggest ever I put in plate for him) which I've never given such size to him. On following morning, he came near me turning his ass to me, I found black nylon stuck there, I helped it to pull it out. Thou I found out he has scattered my thrash bin in the kitchen. I didn't suspect a cat can swallow synthetic stuff like that. After that day, for fews days he has been feeding well, also a good hunter. I travelled again, I put him out in the compound, my neighbour do throw him a whole fish a day. A week later, I came back, on the day of my arrival I saw my cat lying lifelessly still fresh on the ground at the back entrance of my kitchen, time elapsed, I can't save him. The decay was so fast that he dried with 3 days because I was depressed to carry his body to throw it away.
I did autopsy on the dried cadaver, I found out the cat is agonised till death. He swept the ground with his body. I found the remains of the nylon in it. Seems the shit blocked his tract.
Right now, every morning I do miss him.
My guys told me they do leave their cats and travel and nothing do them. This is a lesson to fellow catlovers. I need measures to take next time in case of this kind situation about to happen.
How do we care for our pets when or while on travel because I'm planning to acquire a finer specie and more hybrid breed soon. I'm so sorry about your loss, and your story was very informative especially to all cat lovers out there. Firstly I want to apologize for responding late, sincerely I've been very busy. To your question sir, the best way I believe to care for your cat during travels is to take your cat to an animal boarding house, we have them all over Nigeria or you temporary give to someone you trust pending your arrival. That I believe is the best solution. I'm sorry for your loss once more and I know it can be very painful. Please feel free to contact me on any difficulties you may be encountering with regards your pet. |

Is it safe to brush his teeth and tongue? I swear I can't stand the mouth odour...
His pics, when he was a pup Waow, very beautiful dog. Of course it's safe but be careful to avoid swallowing which may be injurious to your dog. For the bathing, every 2 weeks to a month is okay based on it's coat length. I hope this helps |

Thanks for the anticipated response. My contact 07038974717 in case you have a Watts app group. Thank you so much for the compliment sir, what I'll advice is that you should be patient and gradually start conditioning your dog into how you want him to behave. If you want a security conscious dog, then you'll have to reduce excessive playfulness and excessive fraternity with strangers also reduce human contact and let him stay in his kennel more often. For the barking very soon he'll start barking, be patient. I hope this helps |

KingOvo: Good day SeunH, I just got home after my break and saw that they just got a boerboel. However, the dog is a mess. For one, it's kennel is filled with houseflies and the dog is so scared of everything. It runs when people try to approach it, even from my sister that feeds it regularly. So my question is twofold, how do I deal with the houseflies, two how to I rehabilitate this dog and make it more comfortable with people around? Thank you so much. PS the dog was born in August but they got it less than 2 months ago. Good evening sir, the first thing you should do is to clear and clean your kennel and its surroundings and spray insecticides regularly to control the pests, meanwhile ensure your dog is not exposed to the insecticides because they are dangerous to dogs. Secondly about the fear, it may be due to it's nature/genetic predisposition or may be a learned behaviour, but whichever the case, patient constant tender loving care would build trust and confidence in your dog and he will become comfortable around you. I hope this helps |

kekakuz: This same Dog survived parvo last year after being rejected by 2 Vets. Now he is seriously battling with This huge sore on his back. PS:I take care of my Dogs and the vet visits regularly. This one is just unfortunate. It will survive, just calm down and put your mind at rest, I'll tell you what to do. 1) Firstly ensure the affected area is clean and disnfected by using a clean cotton wool and mild antiseptic 2) Apply Gentian Violet (GV) to the affected area, ensure the area is always covered with GV 3) Please do not attempt to cover the wound with bandage or plaster else, it will "cook the wound" (provide foci for bacterial proliferation) 4) Administer a prophylactic broad spectrum antibiotics, this can be gotten in a Vet pharmacy but if you have a clinic nearby it's better it's via IV (but since your Vet had administered it already, just continue with the treatment) 5) Treat ectoparasitic infection like mange etc, I believe your vet might have done that already with Ivermectin you said he administered 6) For now avoid any bath like cypermethrin or armitraz bath, they may irritate the wound or optionally cover the wound during the bath 7) Administer multivitamins especially Vitamin C and Bcomplex Tender loving care and very good/nutritious food especially with fruits and vegetables 9) Be patient and put your mind at rest. Update us on any new development, I hope this helps!!!! |

Alternatively, if you don't have access to veterinary services you can get oral Ivermectin in any vet pharmacy and I'll guide you on how to administer Lastly, get Armitraz bath which you'll dissolve in water and use to bath your dog weekly till you reduce it to fortnightly then monthly.
