priestcharm: SO sorry about that. I was actually following because my dog also has similar issue at the moment. How did you solve it? I know it is called hematoma Incase you don't get my mail, I realized the drugs are OTC hence can prescribe it here. You can get this lotion called Charmil® and apply to the affected area. Then in support, you would also administer multivitamins with bias towards Bcomplex and Vit C. You can also administer calcium supplements too. But I believe a good nutritious food has all the above vitamins and minerals hence if there are not available, just use the Charmil® lotion alone and put your mind at rest. Please I'll be on standby!! These multivitamins should be given once a day, while Charmil® can be used anytime, provided the area is cleaned before application. |

qubys: I didn’t get any response from him, had to sort it out myself Please, I'm so very sorry, I thought I responded, but I realized I didn't. Please pardon me!!!!. It's actually aural hematoma and can be caused by excessive shaking of the ears which my be due to tick infestation or otitis. If the offending agent is removed, it usually resolves on its own and it not anything for you to worry about. As a means to show my sincere apologies, I'll dm my WhatsApp contact to you, so as to get direct access to me Incase of emergency, I'm sorry once more |

Since yesterday front page has been bombarded with topics like the above, "which course is lucrative" etc. But I'll like to show everyone the best parameters to judge the lucrativeness of a course which includes the following;
a) Relevance/Perceived Relevance to the society
b) Legal protection ie not just anyone is licenced to practice the course except those who studied the course
c) Population of those who studied the course
If your course is deficient of any of the above, it won't be termed a lucrative course irrespective of the years of study etc. For instance, If your course is legally protected with few practitioners and not perceived to be relevant to the society, it won't be seen as lucrative for example dentistry, law etc
If your course is relevant, with few practitioners but not legally protected, it won't also be seen as lucrative for example Bsc Anatomy (my first degree), Bsc Physiology, Engineering etc.
If your course is relevant, legally protected but has a lot of graduates who studied it, it won't also be termed as lucrative example Medicine, Law etc.
It's usually worse when a course has a combination of the above, hence courses like Political science etc are not deemed lucrative.
Pharmacy is among the few courses one could term as lucrative because it doesn't fall under any of the above category, but trust Nigeria, it's just a matter of time especially number 2. |

Pets › Re: How To Identify Quack Veterinary Doctors by seunH(op): 7:09pm On Jun 13, 2021 |
musicology: The veterinary profession is one of the most affected professions in terms of quackery, in that sometimes it is very difficult to identify a genuine vet doctor. You would even see some semi-illiterates and diploma holders parading themselves as veterinarians simply because they have an idea of some animal diseases. It is even more worrisome, the confidence and brazenness some of these quacks exhibit because in their minds, they are usually like "its just an ordinary animal". The only way to avoid falling victims to such unscrupulous people is for pet owners to have the capability to be able to distinguish between quacks and genuine doctors, because it may determine the life or death of your pet. The ways in which you can identify a quack are listed below;
1) Its your right as a pet owner to ask questions about whatever condition your animal is suffering from and get a very detailed answer, if your "vet" cannot answer you or is dodgy about the question. Such individual is likely a quack. (Most quacks may be knowledgeable on how to perform the procedure but don't usually know the principles behind such procedure)
2) Stylishly ask which school he/she graduated from if you are suspicious. Presently, we have only 11 vet schools in Nigeria. They include; (a)Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (b) Federal University Of Agriculture, Abeokuta (c) Federal University Of Agriculture, Makurdi (4) (d) Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike (e) University Of Abuja,Abuja (f) University Of Ibadan, Ibadan (g) University Of Ilorin, Ilorin (h) University Of Maiduguri (i) University Of Nigeria Nsukka (j) Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto (I) University Of Jos Most people do not know the schools that offer veterinary medicine, hence tend to make a blunder. It is imperative to take note of the above schools, if their school ain't in any of the above for now, he/she is definitely a quack. "Imagine a "vet" claiming he/she graduated from Unilag"
3) Check the persons carriage, spoken english and dressing, although subjective, it can be a give away
4) Check their price range and desperation for money, it could also be a give away. My dear friends, no veterinarian who spent 6yrs in Vet school would collect 300 naira from you for any procedure in your house !!!
5) Lastly, if they are quick to give judgement on your case without careful and proper diagnosis, such individual is likely a quack.
In conclusion, I believe if the above principles are followed you would be saved from quacks and get better quality treatment for your pets. You just gave out "expo" to quacks & potential ones. Lolzzzz, my brother they can't escape number 1, I can tell you for free!!! |

Bauer1: Well, my father finished his secondary school education and was employed into the civil service as a Vet in the 70s.
He practiced Veterinary medicine both for the public and private sector for 35 years before he retired. He's still a consultant to this day.
So, is he a quack just because he didn't obtain a university degree in Veterinary medicine? I'm sorry, Yes sir if he claims to be a Vet. Moreover he can never be employed as a Vet in the civil service, if he doesn't have a university degree in veterinary medicine. |

DocAdray: Nice write-up colleague. Its painful what quacks are doing to our profession. A lot of quacks handle cases so poorly and even cause life threatening injuries to pets, before clients will then realize and make extra efforts to look for the actual veterinarians. I've experienced scenerious like this a lot of times.
I'm a veterinarian (female), ABU graduate, Abuja-based. I feel you ma, in fact its terrible. Let me gist you of a case in Lagos of a quack who wanted to administer Augmentin that had in it's leaflet "reconstitute in boiling water" Can you guess what the quack did He dissolved the augmenting powder in a pot of water and started boiling it!!!. Unfortunately he administered the solution and the case got worse and later the dog died, an exotic toy breed. That was when the owner found he was a quack and got him arrested!!! But hopefully, this unitary veterinary ID card would go a long way in curbing this menace |

FreelanceRebel: If he cannot threat cow.
But joke apart, you can hardly get a quack veterinary doctor. Because the job is not that recognized as that much lucrative. And if you have been known to sabi work and your prescription do work for your clients, they hardly change animals physician.
In this career as veterinary physicians, working close to fulani herdsmen and poultry owners is good call My chief, if you know the amount of quacks we fish out everyday sir, you'll be shocked. It's so bad that our council had to prepare to start rolling out unitary veterinary ID cards to distinguishe these quacks. These quacks know how lucrative the profession is and are making cool cash, codedly!!! |

LZAA: 1.True 2.True 3.False because a smooth operator will always fibd maga 4.E be like you never dead broke before You may be right for number 3, that's why I said subjective, but I disagree with you on number 4, "no how owu fit blow reach" no vet who spent 6 years in vet school would come to your house because of 500 naira. Truth be told, veterinary medicine is a very versatile and lucrative profession in that it's among the few courses if you really put your mind to it, you may not need to look for a job. Vet medicine is broad and covers many aspects including human health. After much been said, Veterinary medicine has its own perculiar challenges as with other professions, an example is what is been discussed above which is quackery. All in all, I would say congratulations sir, you made a good choice. I'll dm my number to you for guidance and mentorship. All the best!!! |

KelvinCoaster: Let's call it what it is!
Animal scientists have spoiled business for Vets in Nigeria that's the reason both disciplines don't see ,eye ball to eye ball'.
Imagine a scenerio where a Vet. charge N100 to vaccinate a bird(Poultry),an Animal scientist will gladly take N30 for the same service! I understand sir, but you can't compare the services. Moreover the animal scientist is not liable if anything untowards happens to your pet since he/she may not be licenced to perform such procedure, unlike the vet who is licenced, liable and can be reported to the Veterinary Council where appropriate actions can be taken. |

dominique: Thanks doc. I'm afraid it wasn't discovered early. I've been seeing some drops of blood on the floor for over a week now but I dismissed it as the females having their period (there are 3 females and one male btw). It was yesterday that we discovered that one of the females was not eating, all the food forced into her mouth was vomited almost immediately, then she passed very watery bloody poo this morning. It was when I googled the symptoms that I saw she most likely has parvo (she wasn't vaccinated at birth ). Now she has lost so much weight and can no longer move. I've searched for vets around my area using Google maps but my husband thinks it's something he can handle. Can such case be effectively treated at home?
She has already been isolated from the others since yesterday when we discovered something ain't right with her and we have been keeping her hydrated by forcing water into her mouth using a syringe. Anything other than water that goes into her mouth gets vomited immediately. Does ORS work for dogs? We need to treat this urgently. I'll tell you the steps to follow to preserve the life of your pup temporary while I search for a qualified Vet for you. But I won't be able to tell you here on NL since some of the drugs I'll be prescribing are controlled drugs which is unethical. Hence I'll dm my number to you, then I'll prescribe medications to you and how to administer them step by step. I'm so sorry once more. |

I’m new in this, she’s my first pet…thank you vet… Good morning sir, on the first point, NO, there is no relationship between eating egg and worm infestation, it's just "old wives tales". On the second point, depending on her age, her food should be rich in protein, vitamin and carbohydrates, in the manner I arranged them. Rice garnished with carrots is good. Meat, Fish, Eggg etc are also excellent sources of protein. I hope this helps!!! |

Drs say parvovirus is 50/50, but from experience, I personally believe if detected early, the prognosis is quite good. For now, I'll advice you to hydrate your dog, keep your dog calm and be calm yourself, isolate and avoid contact with other dogs pending your visit to the Vet. Please update on any development, I'll be on standby. Sorry once more for the condition |

Southbeach: Goodevening doc, Pls I av a couple of questions/concerns abt my dog. I have a female samoyed/Eskimo dog, it's been 6month since her first heat(january). People keep telling me she ought to have come on her 2nd before now. I just want to know if this is normal or something could be wrong. 2ndly, her furs keeps falling off everytime. I dont know what I can do to remedy this. 3rdly, what nutritional meals/diet would you recommend, I want her to grow bigger than she is right now. Thanks alot. Good evening sir, on the first question, I'll advice you to be patient, you're still on track and there is no cause for alarm but be observant all the same. On the second question, it could be a skin condition like ectoparasitic infestation or any condition that can irritate the skin. On the last question, just simply give food rich in protein and calories also supplement with fruits and vegetables like carrots and spinach. Please don't hesitate to ask further questions, for areas you aren't clear, I hope this helps!!! |

Good afternoon sir and sorry for the delay. On number 1, you should ensure your environment is clean with no hidden areas and damp free, you can also get Fipronil® spray too and apply it on your dog periodically. On number 2, such drug does not exist, the only thing you can do is to vaccinate your dog against rabies, but still avoid dog bites because of germs in your dog's mouth. On number 3, it's not advisable also because of the reason above. I hope this helps!!! |
