So I just dey reason with my wife this evening o. For those of us that paid in dollars back when the kit first became available. We paid $600 o. That was roughly 450k depending on how you got forex and at what exchange rate. Today that is at least 780k if the price didn’t change. Add the 20% discount and that’s about 624k. But because you are paying in Naira, Starlink can be gotten for 300k today. So it’s basically 50% cheaper to buy in Nigeria. No point to these musings…just my random thoughts. Starlink has been amazing by the way. 9 Likes |

Education / Re: How Mmesoma Ejikeme Joy Forged Her UTME Result - JAMB's Spokesperson by seunpayne(m): 1:20pm On Jul 04, 2023 |
I don’t know that this girl is innocent or guilty. I do know that JAMB as an institution has been dubious over this matter. 1. Did she mutilate a result from 2021 or from 2023? 2. Why has Jamb not come out to show the original result attached to the QR code she allegedly forgot to change? 3. Why has Jamb not shown us her original result as it is on their server? 4. How do you unilaterally withdraw her result and ban her from the exam for 3 years without actually proving she did anything wrong? A press release and a TV interview is not proof of wrongdoing. I expect a public institution to conduct itself in a manner that speaks to equity and fairness. In this, Jamb has failed to act in that manner and it then calls to question the position they have taken on this matter |

I already expected this because making cheaper will be a slap on all those who bought early. Plus because the rate fluctuates they have to give space small. Me I go continue with my dollar card as I get better rates than this. I just hope they don’t force you to use naira |

georgee: The backlash will be mad!!! Because it’s gonna role up everyone who bought at black market rate. They can mitigate this by converting the difference to subscription for the early adopters but I doubt they will make it that cheap. They would update the price to reflect the rate fintechs are using and then accept naira payments. I’m sure they would also keep the pay in dollar option too for people that readily have forex. I think the best thing that can happen to payments in Nigeria is for PayPal to allow naira payments directly. Regardless of the rate. That will open our market big time and other services (google, meta, Amazon) will follow 1 Like |

georgee: Amazing. So I’ve never been hung up on speed tests. Starlink is fast! The only thing available that is faster is my office wifi and MTN 5G. One is only for work and the other hardly ever works. Everything I’ve thrown at starlink, it has handled effortlessly. Still waiting for heavy rain to see what the experience is like but so far…great buy for me 1 Like |

Phones / Re: Starlink Unboxing & Speedtest In Nigeria by seunpayne(m): 6:32am On Apr 18, 2023 |
georgee: This is very simple. Configure the starlink as you want and make sure it is working and then also reset the tplink and plug the Ethernet cable. Here is a fun fact, most of these devices are designed to work out of the box. So find the wifi signal of the router and connect to it. The password is usually written under it. Make sure both wifi networks are browsing (starlink and router). If they are then you are ready for some customization. Now connect to the tplink router and then open your browser (use a computer preferably) and go to 192.168.1.1 then hit enter. Username and password is admin Now you can go ahead and change the name of your wifi to match the name you gave the starlink upstairs and make sure the password is the same as well. Now test it. Browse from downstairs and move upstairs. Your phone would roam seamlessly without breaking signal. We are not done Now log into the starlink and separate the networks. Rename the 5Ghz band to something else. So now you have two networks. The 2.4ghz band is both upstairs and downstairs and then the 5ghz band is only upstairs. Now do three speed tests: 1. Speed test connected to the 5ghz wifi signal 2. Speed test connected to the 2.4ghz signal while you are upstairs 3. Speed test connected to the 2.4ghz signal while you are downstairs. Let’s see the results and we can advice further. So someone may tell you to give upstairs network and downstairs network two different names because of trouble shooting. This isn’t necessarily true. If you have an issue it’s one of two places. Either the router downstairs is having issues, in which case you will know by simply connecting to the 5ghz signal, or starlink is having issues which you would know the same way as well. I am not sure if this router has bridge mode but this initial setup should get you up and running for now. 1 Like 1 Share |

georgee: Omo…you for ask fess o. Reset the starlink by on and off about 6 times then set it up again as normal Then connect it to your router and setup but don’t enable the bypass yet. Until everything is working, don’t enable bypass. Tell me what router you are using if you need extra info on setting it up |

ask4bk: I think they may still have two or three left. I will find out. So I have been building WLAN installations for the last 7 years and I think, if performance is important, a wireless uplink solution is a huge disadvantage. By uplink I mean, imagine your internet connection comes from starlink, that’s your WAN (wide area network). Distributed inside your house is your LAN (Local area network). Now you can handle distribution wirelessly by deploying a WLAN network (wireless LAN). I’m gonna be a bit technical so please bear with me. Your starlink and any dualband router made in the last three years would most likely come with gigabit ports which support network speeds of up to 1000Gbps. So within that network you can do a lot of things apart from using the internet without affecting your internet speed. A typical example is when you do a speed test on starlink, one test measures the speed between the router and the internet . The other measures the speed between your device and the router. Finally you can also test between your device and the internet. Theoretically you would find that your results for the third test is most likely to be affected by the result of the second. The reason is because you can’t access the internet faster than your device’s connection to your uplink (router). And that’s why you want a very good uplink device. Now what about distributing to the rest of the house? Well, if your run a cable from your uplink to another access point/router then you take advantage of the gigabit speeds. So if you test your speed from that device you will get the best speeds because your local connection is way faster than your internet speed. Consider however, if you were using a 300mbs router for example, and your speed is throttling down to that speed despite the fact that your uplink is 1000gbps. A better wifi 6 router/access point connected via cable could give you up to 6gbps wirelessly which is why everyone is asking you to get something better. One last scenario, if your connection to your uplink is wireless however, (wireless extender or wireless mesh) your speeds drop really fast because wifi isn’t as fast a physical connection. In which case, unless you are using really top access points or mesh setups, you’ll basically be experiencing crappy bandwidth on your local network. My fingers hurt. Shey you sha get the jist? |
Phones / Re: Starlink Unboxing & Speedtest In Nigeria by seunpayne(m): 11:01am On Apr 08, 2023 |
georgee: So a great wifi connection is important for more than just internet speed. Your wifi is responsible for a lot more than that. I have smart lights, smart speakers, Network assisted storage for streaming movies and document storage and sharing all hooked up at home. That 300mbps bandwidth will disappear very quickly once you’re streaming a 1080p movie wirelessly from your computer to your TV for example. So I think it is a very decent investment. Do you need it NOW? Maybe not. Will you need it in the future? Most likely. 1 Like |

georgee: Don’t want to get into an argument with anybody. If it’s just ground floor you want to cover while having the Starlink upstairs, get a dual band router. Mesh solutions apart from being more expensive are not one-size-fits-all. Tp-link has dual band wifi 6 routers for less than 100k and you can get them in naija easily. Tp-link AX1500 is a good example 1 Like |

Phones / Re: Starlink Unboxing & Speedtest In Nigeria by seunpayne(m): 10:41am On Apr 07, 2023 |
georgee: Well if you plug the adapter and run an Ethernet cable to your tp link, you will have two wifi signals. Fun fact: you can name the second wifi signal the same name as the starlink wifi signal and you will have a rudimentary form of a mesh network. (You’ll have to tinker to get the security parameters and channels right for this to work). If you want to bypass the starlink completely, there is a toggle in settings (click advanced settings) and you’ll be able to turn off the starlink router and all it’ll be is a power source for the dishy. All routing functions would be passed on to your router (tp link) EDIT: If the model of your tplink is those n300 routers, be aware that you’ll not have access to the 5ghz band and it’s speeds. So if that’s important, make sure you’re using a dual band router with MU-MIMO functionality. 1 Like |
