Politics / Jonathan Says Attack Is On Nigeria - Before Nko? by Sharonf(f): 5:11pm On Jun 17, 2011
President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a visit to the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, scene of Thursday's terror attack that killed several people and injured several more.
Mr Jonathan, who said he was at the police building to see things for himself, urged all Nigerians to remain calm.

He also said he has been meeting with the heads of the nation's security forces to ensure that such incidents of terrorism become a thing of the past in the country. The president, who expressed sadness at the bombing, also commiserated with families of the victims. He said he was optimistic that the nation would overcome this ugly trend and that security agencies are working to better protect the citizens.

According to Mr. Jonathan, terrorist attacks are a global phenomenon that are not peculiar to Nigeria, pointing out that "all over the world, nobody is free." "This terrorist act should not be viewed as an attack on the police, but on the entire nation," he said, adding "everybody is a target when it comes to terrorist attacks."
The president was given a graphic account of the bomb explosion by Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, and shown around the scene of the crime where forensic experts were seen conducting their investigations.

Eternal vigilance

In a related development, Lateef Adegbite, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Public Awareness on Security and Civic Responsibilities, also this afternoon, described yesterday's bomb attack as not only unfortunate, but reprehensible.
Mr. Adegbite who is also the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, commiserated with the Inspector-General of Police, victims and relations of all those affected by the explosion.
He assured Nigerians that the government will not relent in unraveling those behind the act, adding that security is a collective responsibility and therefore urged Nigerians to play their own part in keeping the society safe.
Mr. Adegbite said his committee is currently re-appraising strategies to raise awareness on potential security threats in the country; and propagate ways on how members of the public, including civil societies, can identify and deal with suspicious movements.

Politics / Justice Is Served : Man, 33, Gets Two Years For Stealing N20,000 by Sharonf(f): 8:51pm On Jan 06, 2011
A man who collected dirty Nigerian currency notes under the pretext of changing them to new ones and never retured them, was on Wednesday sentenced to two years imprisonment. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict, Saheed Lawal, 33, who faced a one-count charge of stealing at a Yaba Magistrates Court, pleaded guilty.

The prosecution said Mr Lawal had, on November 20, 2010 at Marda Barracks, Sabo-Yaba, stolen N20,000 from Kudirat Lateef.

“Lawal collected N20,000 dirty currencies with a promise to change them to new notes. He, however, ran away with the money and was later apprehended by the police,” Emmanuel Ajayi, the prosecutor, told the court.

He said Mr Lawal was an ex-convict, who was only released from the prison in April 2010 for committing a similar offence. The offence, Ajayi said, contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, laws of Lagos State. The magistrate, Olumide Fusika, sentenced Lawal to two years imprisonment without an option of fine.

I think he should have been taken to the gallows

violent:

we are simply deviating from the original topic. I'm finding it hard to understand how the government will impement this "ugly building tax". . .what model is used to determine what is ugly and what's not?

I also believe that this will likely play a bigger burden on the average and lower income earning bracket of the society as the extremely rich ones are not likely to own ugly buildings!

WOW! So you actually believed the article was real? Rotfl! What a dunce!
