Multies

Multies is the short word for multi-syllable rhymes. They are phrases in which more than one syllable rhymes. Multies can be double, triple, quadruple (etc, ) rhymes.

Normal rhyme: cat / hat
Multi rhyme: my cat / hi-hat
Or a longer multi: bit my cat / hit the hi-hat

Rappers who use these style frequently are Ludacris, Papoose, Busta rhymes, Dizzie Rascal and Eminem.

Why Should I Use Multies?

'Multies are hallmarks of all the dopest flows, and all the best rappers use them. They are more complex and more complex and more impressive than normal rhymes and so command a lot more respect. Multies add variation to your verse and will help you craft better rhymes.' - Escher.

How Many Multies Should I Use
'That's up to you. Some rapprs use multies only occasionally, while others (like Eminem) rhyme almost exclusively with multies. Example is with Eminem's Lose Yourself and Papoose's Thug Connection.' - Escher

His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
to drop bombs, but he keeps on forgetting

- Eminem, Lose Yourself

My lyrical tendency's equivalent to a critical felony
Precise behind bars like a criminal's penalty
Pinnacle definitely, hold so much jewels in my miracle memory
It's like I'm a physical treasury
Deep into weaponry[b], psychotic Ni**as [b]who envy me
Wanna be nuts, so I bust nuts like my genitals sexually
Punished in my mother's stomach by swimming through Hennessy
I was born with a difficult destiny, not your typical mentally
Giving my vision through treacheries
Syllable therapy, invincible visual energy
No artist identity resemble me, I flow like a mineral chemically
Cause I flow with a chemical chemistry
I can flow like the river through Tennessee
The mystical seventh sea or currency at the Senegal embassy
At birth although it's umbilical regularly
They cut a mic chord and disconnected me
Leaders political threaten me for what I write in my lyrical melody
While others broke laws, I broke lyrical legacies
Flip forever, live for infinity, and respect the P
It's Papoose, I conquered this caliber, next degree

- Papoose, Thug Connection.

Example can also be seen in 'Trade it All RMX by Fabulous and Puff 'Man of Many Names' Daddy. I listen to Fab's first verse and was like 'Wow!' - there's the power of multies.

Hope you ge' it.

Punchlines (a.k.a. Punches)

Imagine that you're in a boxing ring and there's your opponent. He's being talkin' trash about whoopin' ya ass and all ya homz are with you and hailing all the way. The bell goes for round 1 and the crowd goes intense. You've got more people screamin the other guy's name and you're tryin' to get your due place in the match. You gots do what you gast do - throw Punches.

This is the same with rappin. In order to gain respect, you have to use punches. Punches - the short forms for punchlines - are the weapons of a battling rapper.

What are punches?

"Punches are any phrases in your verse that diss(disrespect) your opponent. Punches can be general, broad attacks or personals." - quote from the Rapper's Handbook. Broad attacks are disses you can use on anyone while Personals are disses that are meant for a specific person, a direct diss - specific.

Whichever one it is, a punch has got to hit hard. If you got flows and you can rhyme like erm. . Jay-Z and you don't got punches, then you're a no-goer. You can never win or knock out your opponent if you don't jab a fist.

Check these examples I got from the Rapper's Handbook:

The tightest flow on the planet to prove i'm the best
I'm the illest king of the land, ruling the rest

No punch

The tightest flow on the planet to prove I'm the best
Yo flow's like thick mucus that get caught in yo chest

Broad punch

My flow's tight like your shirt, how can you breathe?
Your shirts got the right idea, I think it wants to leave

Personal punch - if your opponent is wearing a tight shirt

"Ideally, you want every line in your verse to be a punchline but the ones that really weigh are the first and the last lines - Openers and Closers." - Escher.

Also, avoid using broad punches. Make it personal, personal punches hit more and connect with the audience more. I'll also talk about punches in details later.

Metaphors (and Similes)

Metaphors and similes are an advanced but very important part of rapping, especially when you're freestyling because this is the part that connects to the audience (second to punchlines, that is). They are often found in a rapper's funniest and cleverest lines. They define a rapper.

Definitions of Metaphors

1. A figure of speech in which a word or a phrase is used for another of which it is an image. - Webster's Reference Library Concise Dictionary and Thesaurus.

2. A figure of speech in which a word or a phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in "a sea of troubles" or "All the world's a stage" (Shakespare). - American Heritage Dictionary.

3.A metaphor is basically a creative comparison between two things. - The Rapper's Handbook.

All these definitions bore down to the same thing. The art of using metaphors is comparing words to create a better impression (to make it lucid and funny sometimes).

In schools, we're thought that Metaphors and Similes are different in the sense that Metaphors are comparisons using 'is' while similes are comparisons using 'as' or 'like'. In rap, most times they are both called METAPHORS.

Take a look at these lines:

Me without mics is like a beat without a snare
I'm sweet like licorice, dangerous like syphillis

- Lauryn Hill on 'How Many Mics'

Ooh, girl, your breath is harsh,
Cover your mouth up like you've got SARS

- Kanye West

Can you spot the words 'like' and 'is'? Those are metaphors.
Metaphors are best when you reference them to current events. . e.g. Inflation, Politics, Culture.

Types of Metaphors

There are two types of metaphors - Simple metaphors and Metaphors with wordplay. I'll dissect this much later.

NO OFF-TOPIC POSTS. THEY WOULD BE DELETED IMMEDIATELY. THANKS

Hey. . temper, temper, it's the new rules on battles. Because when people start posting freely, the verses won't be easy to locate. Example was on the last tourny. . I would have deleted those above too but they were before the rule was made and so that those that think I'm deleting them for my own good would see that I didn't delete Makavele's diss on me. . except he wants them to be taken out.
Rap BattlesRe: Ask For Feed Here by Shaz(op): 6:37pm On Jul 22, 2008
Crude,

It is bad to rhyme three lines because that in standard battle terms is 1.5 bars. Altho, in the real terms a bar is 4 beats - so it depends on whether you're on audio or text. But just to be on the safe side on text, rhyme four lines. For instance, check this:

I want to rhyme just three lines
I'm wondering if they gon rhyme
But it seems I'm running out of time
Switch the game up like a PS console

The rhyme scheme is A A A B which aint right except the next two bars are gon be the same way, e.g.

I want to rhyme just three lines A
I'm wondering if they gon rhyme A
But it seems I'm running out of time A
Switch the game up like a PS console B
Bleep catridges, i'm workin on Blu-ray C
Reincarnate myself like Babatunde C
God is gon show me the key today C
So I can unravel the stories untold B

Hope this is lucid enough. Just to be on the same side (since most people want direct rhyme schemes and can't be bothered to see the arrangment) make each bar rhyme.

So just a word of advice. A fool and his money are soon parted. Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish. A rolling stone gathers no moss - an ambitious person is more successful than a person not trying to achieve anything. And never air your dirty laundry in the public.

And yeah, just shouting a HAPPY BUFFDAY to all Nairalanders that were born today, more years and grace and send una party cake o. . if una no do party, erm. . just akara will do. POSTAL ADDRESS: tba. . lol.

i'ma go "boom" on her and make her my dog's bride
reduce her to nothingness and strip the hooker of her pride*
How can you go boom on someone one. . Makavele lacks the right use of words and he knows it. . he''ll find out in the beat down and he also lacks structure. .The last line of this bar was a punchline due to the use of wordplay. . that was the only place an element was used. . Makavele has no control over in-rhymes, multis, flows, metas and sims and personals

wack babe be getting paranoid, brain's empty~ but this is just the intro
