Celebrities / How Airtel Ridiculed The Yoruba Tribe In Their New Tv Advert by Simplybami(f): 1:53am On Jul 22, 2018 |
The Yoruba's tribe passion for acquisition of knowledge through formal education is our hallmark which also serves as the outstanding feature which distinguishes us among other ethnic groups. We understand the values of education and this has helped in building and maintaining our tradition of intellectualism that has been in existence over centuries. However, if a corporate brand like Airtel Nigeria is looking for a tribe to patronise in a condescending way amongst the ethnic groups we have in Nigeria, the least tribe to be considered for the ingenuous act is Yoruba tribe considering our level of exposure. As a matter of fact, no tribe should be represented as such, because there are educated people in our ethnic groups. I watched in dismay the new advert of Airtel Nigeria featuring some nollywood actors. Ngozi Iwosu represented the igbo tribe, while Idowu Philips popularly known as Iya Rainbow, represented the yoruba tribe. The advert clearly depicts the rivalry between the two tribes. The battle for who would overshadow the other between the two Mother In-laws; Amaka's Mum (representing the Igbo tribe ) and Mama Rainbow (representing the Yoruba tribe) started during the christening of the new born baby. The advert centers on the young couple; Amaka and Segun(Segun's role was played by Abdullateef Adedimeji )who recently got married and had their first child. At the christening ceremony, Amaka's mum took the child to take a picture with her. “Selfie time" she shouted. The crowd gathered around her to be captured. Mama Rainbow also Brought out her tablet almost immediately, not wanting to be left out of the fanfare. “Selufie time,” she squealed. Now back to my drift,Ngozi Iwosu was made to play the character of a sophisticated and educated igbo woman while Iya Rainbow on the other hand is the unlettered Yoruba woman that can't pronounce (selfie time) rather she said 'Selufie time' .Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to cause any controversy as regards the advert. All I just need is a clarification from Airtel Nigeria, the intent of the advert or should i just assume they are just trying to portray the Yoruba tribe as the uneducated tribe? 3 Likes 1 Share |
Romance / How Some Guys Actually Encourage The Sense Of Entitlement Amongst Ladies by Simplybami(f): 4:12pm On Jul 19, 2018 |
I went to the market that day to get the stuff i'd be taking to school. I had gotten almost everything I needed, save for palm oil, vegetable oil and onions. I proceeded to the mallam selling the onions. He told me the price,it was a fair price,so I paid him and told him to package it. Then I saw him. Tall, dark skinned and averagely 'Okay' he had also come for shopping. He greeted me,and I replied him casually concentrating my focus on the Hausa dude to make sure he packed everything. 'You're so beautiful' he said to me smiling. I looked up at him surprised, because I thought he had left. 'Oh thanks' I replied him curtly shifting my gaze to the Hausa guy. 'Mallam Shey you no go add fisi for me? I be your regular customer oooo' I told the Hausa guy, teasing him. 'Walahi aunty I don help you add' he replied me. I smiled at him, collecting the nylon from him and I thanked him. I remembered I still needed to get palm oil and vegetable oil,so I proceeded to the woman's shop I usually buy from. It was then that I noticed that guy had been following me. I was pissed,so I looked up at him coldly. 'I hope all is well? What do you want from me? Why are you following me all around?' I asked him. 'Oh,i'm sorry. Can I please get your mobile number? I promise not to be a nuisance please'. He said to me. I ignored him thinking he was going to get the clue to leave me alone. I didn't want to be rude to him. But he persisted. So I finally budged and gave him my mobile number. 'Thank you so much,I won't be a pest'. He said, smiling sheepishly. I heaved a sigh of relief, thinking I had gotten rid of him. But to my dismay, the guy was still following me. I lost my cool and turned to him angrily. 'What else do you want? I really don't find this funny, why are you following me?' I asked him. 'Oh,I just want to see you board the bus in my presence, and also help you with these loads, nothing serious' he said smiling. He must have felt like my knight in shinning armour, displaying his chivalry. But I wasn't having any of it,because I was already irritated at that point. So I told him I wasn't going home yet, that I still needed to get something at the garage that I was just going to drop the loads with my customer. So I did just that, and I crossed to the other side to board a bus. The guy followed me. I ignored him and boarded the bus. Then he did something very irritating. He brought out his wallet and offered me money to use to pay for my transport fare. I lost my cool and shouted at him, asking him if I had asked for his money. I felt so disrespected and also angry that I had given him my number. He was surprised, and apologised quickly leaving that spot. Apparently, that wasn't his first time. Some passengers laughed while I told the driver to move. He kept calling me daily, asking for a date. But I turned all his requests down because I didn't want to see him. I got tired of him telling me about his job,how he was going to take care of me and make me look more beautiful, and how he couldn't wait to make me his wife.I stopped picking his calls thinking he was going to get tired. I had returned to school when he contacted me next. I ignored his calls and didn't reply his messages because I was just so tired of his 'I want to make you my wife'. Then the following day,he sent me airtime which I sent back to him immediately. 'Why are you so arrogant?' I said to him when I called him. 'Did I ask you for airtime? 'please just respect yourself and don't try this next time okay?' I said to him and ended the call. That didn't deter him from calling and I kept on ignoring his calls. What I'm trying to say in essence is,most guys love impressing ladies. So don't go around complaining when a lady you just started dating keeps demanding heavily from you. Trust me,it's the way you've painted yourself from the beginning that made her a demanding girlfriend. I know how irritating the sense of entitlement is. Some ladies could have made that guy up there their 'maga' but I told him point blank that I wasn't interested. I hated the fact that he kept bragging. That guy is just one example from so many other guys out there. Simplybami 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Sapiosexuality: There's something off about that guy. I won't be surprised if he swindles these people of their little money because of their greed. I know so many people are suffering out there, but I'm surprised no one deem it fit to tell him to refund the money. Someone even prayed for him, that God will bless him. Smh. Gidilagoon: You're not a real man for slapping her! Gosh i'm so angry. What right did you have for doing that? Is she your child? If you know you can't tolerate a cheating partner, always let them go instead of acting like a tout. You're such a control freak. Imagine, getting her a new line because your insecure self couldn't stand the other guys she must have dated in the past. One question, didn't you date other girls in the past too? Why didn't she also change your line? One thing I want you to know is,no man owns a woman get it? Even when you're married. She's your partner, your equal half not a commodity you control like you bought. Ps: i'm not in anyway justifying your lady's actions. That was a shameful thing to do. I do not in anyway support immorality irrespective of the gender ok? But next time,if you know you can't forgive your cheating partner, always walk away. You have absolutely no right to hit anyone. 1 Like |

Romance / Let's Talk About Albinism by Simplybami(f): 10:50pm On Jul 12, 2018 |
Last month, the news broke out that a popular Nollywood actor refused to have anything at all to do with his third child because she was different in terms of her complexion from the other kids he had. The beautiful baby's crime was the fact that she was born as an Albino. This is something this precious jewel couldn't have avoided. He told his wife to get another father for the child because he was cock sure that the baby girl didn't come out from his loin. For several months, he abandoned both his wife and three children abroad, completely leaving the wife to fend for the kids all by herself while he was still alive. His grouse with his wife was the fact that she birthed an Albino, and in his words, no one in his family was an Albino. So where did she get that from? He asked. He requested for a DNA test, which was promptly carried out, and the test result showed that the popular actor was 99.9 percent the father of the child. Even after the test, he refused to accept that result and he told his wife to come over to Nigeria for another DNA test because he was so sure the result was manipulated. It is interesting to note that, during the birth of his previous kids, he didn't request for a DNA test. But because this beautiful Albino baby girl was different from his other kids because of her complexion, he refused to take full responsibility as her father, accusing his wife of being wayward. Really? One would have thought that with the actor's level of exposure, this sort of thing should have never resulted into a bout of war between his wife and him. But, he disappointed us all with his minute baked knowledge about certain medical conditions. I was so angry when I heard the news. It made me sad for a while because a father actually refused his own daughter because she was an Albino. For God's sake, this little angel didn't create herself, so why make her feel bad about her existence. And then, it occurred to me that, the popular actor had acted that way because of his ignorance. He is not the only person guilty of this ignorance, there are so many Africans out there who have this twisted misconceptions about Albinos. Some see them as cursed beings that were punished for the crimes they committed in their past lives, others see them as a good luck charm which will be very effective for money ritual, while some even see them as outcasts. Few days ago, I went to get something at a grocery store. While I was there, I couldn't help but to listen to the conversation of a young guy and a lady seated at the store. The guy in his words told the beautiful lady seated beside him not to even think of getting married to a light skinned guy, because she was going to give birth to Albinos. The girl was terrified, and in the usual Nigerian religious spirit, she rebuked the proclamation immediately; binding and casting every spirit of Albinism. It was really hilarious to watch, because the lady in question was also light skinned, and the well meaning dark skinned guy had automatically assumed that if two light skinned people should get married, their offsprings would be Albinos. I was irritated by their display of ignorance because getting information about certain issues these days was not a big deal. It's just one click away. So why exactly do people wallow in ignorance and feed other people with this misconceptions? I butted in quickly and told the guy point blank that he was wrong. I explained to him that it could happen to anyone provided the parents have albinism gene. I also asked him if he had never seen two dark skinned couple giving birth to Albino. He replied in affirmative. So I asked him what his explanation for that was, and he went quiet. It is pertinent to understand the fact that, albinism is no respecter of anyone, anyone can have it irrespective of his or her race.It can only be managed but can never be cured. So, what exactly is Albinism? According to Wikipaedia, Albinism is a condition some people and animals are born with. This condition is caused by a lack of pigment (melanin) in their hair , eyes , and skin. A person or animal with albinism is called an albino.People with albinism can have white or light blonde hair. They can have very pale skin. Their eyes are blue, or rarely pink-ish. People with albinism can have problems such as bad vision and getting sunburnt easily. This is because people with albinism have less pigments in their eyes, skin and hair. Albinism is a hereditary condition. It is usually inherited in a recessive pattern; it means, both parents have to give the albinism gene to a child to cause albinism.Parents pass on pairs of genes to their children. One of the pairs of genes is in charge of making melanin. If both of these genes are flawed, then little or no pigment is made. If only one gene if flawed then pigment can still be made. If just one parent has the gene and the other parent has a normal pigment gene, their children won't have oculocutaneous albinism. But each child will have a one in two chance of being a "carrier" of an albinism gene. If a child who carries the gene grows up to have a baby with someone who also does, there's a one in four chance that their baby may have albinism. Since most people who carry an albinism gene don't show any signs of the condition, a baby with albinism can be born to parents whose colouring is typical for people of their ethnic group. The most common form of ocular albinism affects only males who have inherited an albinism gene from their mothers. Some females can have a milder form of the condition if they have inherited this gene.(kidshealth) People born with albinism are human beings just like us. They should never be treated unfairly because of their condition. They rarely have any serious issues related to their condition, expect for their visions and they getting sunburnt because of their lack of melanin. These can be managed, so they are just perfectly normal like everyone. They are not cursed beings, they are not good luck charms for effective money ritual, they do not possess any supernatural element, all these are myths and superstitions that have been passed around for so long. We are all equal before our maker, and no one, absolutely one one should be treated badly because of their pigmentation. Have you found this article helpful? How do you treat people with albinism? Do you think they are abnormal? Share your thoughts with me. www.simplybami..com 1 Like 1 Share |

At the viewing centre yesterday, there was tension in air. Everyone was urging the players to do better, different comments were flying all around. But one particular comment caught my attention. The dude seated behind me uttered the one that made everyone laughed. 'Super Eagles abeg make una no spoil my life tonight ooooo' he said gesticulating with both hands. 'Chai God help us,I wan sleep well tonight' he continued. I was curious to know why he was hell bent on the Eagles winning, because I knew he wasn't that patriotic. So I turned back and questioned him. 'Guy no lie oooo, you don bet say Super Eagles go win tonight abi?' I asked him smiling mischievously. 'Yes na,na the 5k wey dem send me from house to buy foodstuff na hin I take go bet,if dem no win tonight,I don enter gbege be that' he said to me with apprehension written all over him. Just at that moment,Moses was given a free pass but he fell after one of the Croatian players collided with him. The guy behind me lost his cool. 'Why this idiot no cover the ball and hin legs with the blood of Jesus?this guy wan make me lose 5k tonight' he said, standing up on his feet. We all laughed and then I replied him. 'Guy na your village people dey follow you,why you go go place 5k untop Super Eagles you well so?abeg make we hear word oooo no dey disturb God with your prayers.' I retorted. Everyone roared with laughter, the cute guy beside gave me an high five. 'Why you sef go bet naa?you con use your feeding money bet. Your village people don finally get you ooo' I yabbed the guy with my sharp mouth smiling. 'Babe, forget that thing betting na normal thing, make we just dey pray say Super Eagles go equalise abeg' He retorted. 'No be me and you go pray that kind prayer' I replied him and focused my attention on the screen. Twenty minutes to end the match, the cute guy sitting beside me lost his cool and started blowing big big words. Few minutes to end the match, people started leaving, complaining bitterly about the formation. One said 'Na that stupid coach cause this rubbish ooo,my 2k don go be that oooo' Different comments were flying all around. I waited till the very end before leaving the viewing center. The cute guy left without saying goodbye, the match must have upset him, cause he acted really pissed. Lol. My questions are: Why do guys bet?(not all though)Why was Moses behaving like he was under the influence of Rohypnol last night? What happened to those babalawos who always tie people's destiny? Why didn't they tie the legs of the Croatian players? So Eagles actually went there to slay or what? #Bami |
