@Ajanlekoko sorry but i am a nigerian graduate and i hope you are not
I meant no harm i was only trying to emphasis part of the things that bring about the general conclusion that foreign grads are better I guess i mistook contacts for connections. anyways this is how me i look at "contacts"
The outputs or performances of graduates in their work areas are the basis for which such arguments as we are having now are created Now how would you describe a situation where an unqualified, half baked graduate (as is the case with most nigerian graduates whose quality of education has seen a steady decline over the years) is employed in a position sometimes even at the expense of a better qualified graduate? so that when its time for them to produce results, they struggle. then you wonder how they got there in the first place? its because they have "contacts in a lot of places" over time this has been the case so that employers would rather go for foreign grads whose standard/quality of education has remained sound and steady |

AjanleKoko: You think? I am not trying to defend my position o. But I have really had a very fulfilling career in Nigeria, even a spell outside. I've been all over the world, work-wise. I have gotten to a top position in Nigeria, salary and exposure wise, without having to cough out millions for a foreign degree. And I have lots of contacts all over the place, at least the ones relevant to my industry. So, I am not sure what I have missed.
Again, I am not knocking foreign degrees. We all know education is bad in Nigeria, yes. But it goes beyond just a degree. I need to be convinced that a chap who did his Bsc in Unilag can suddenly be muchbetter than he was, just by spending a year or two outside. Work experience, definitely. Education, not sure if it's even important. Ara nkan ti a nso naa ni yen Whether or not you agree, these are part of the things that conrtibute to the decay and failure of our system Foreign students need not have "lots of contacts all over the place" |

aribisala0: there are currently many problems with the learning environment in nigerian universities that makes it a waste of time attending any of them. 1. cults; for some reason no speaks about this. as long as we fail to tackle this cancer we might as well give up on the whole thing 2.examination fraud 3. sundry morality issues
the result of all this is that many graduate with degrees ,empty heads and dishonest/fraudulent dispositions. in many ways it is true that we are a dispossessed people and have to study in english but we are where we are and every secondary school gradaute must be proficient in english . sadly it is impossible for me to say this for almost all nigerian university graduates i meet
many posters on this thread don't bathe themselve in linguistic glory.let us preserve their dignity with anonymity .for the OP there will be no such reprieve .
your english is embarrassing and needs remedial intervention desperately
i don't think university tackles the language problem .they don't teach grammar at university and the two main predictors of english competence ,in my view,,are social background and a reading culture (wide and avid) in early life
looking at early education: i recently had a family from nigeria ;Lekki to be precise, vacation with me.the first boy is in primary 4 in private school at a cost of 1.5 million a year. he says things like "uncle ,tope have broke the cup". more annoying for me is the fact that he can't speak yoruba because his parents forbid it. it is a common misconception among parvenu parents that speaking the mother tongue harms english acquisition even though evidence suggests the exact opposite . my view is that many nigerian universities are not conducive atmospheres for learning and are at best one rung above useless Hmm, Nigerian graduate |

Sagamite: We have to separate academic achievement from intelligence. There is a correlation but not necessarily an equation.
I have seen people with 1st class or PhD from top universities that still have severely faulty logical thinking when discussing outside their field. The only thing their glowing academics tell me is that they are not stewpid. It does not tell me they are the most intelligent or part of intelligence elite. Some are just good at a particular field.
Secondly, we need to look at what good education provides.
- It is an opportunity to be in an institution set up to share the best ideas in a field.
- It stretches your intellectual aptitude and challenges your thinking.
- It exposes you to theories of leading thinkers in a field.
- It empowers you and trains you to develop yourself academically.
- It continuously exposes and reminds you of your limitations.
- Being among people that have experienced all above at similar peer-learning level, accelerates ones development in each of the above.
All these tend to aid self development.
To summarise, foreign students are not more intelligent than local students, but they are most times more exposed, tested and ingrained to doing things well and having better knowledge in a field due to the facilities and environment they are privileged to have learnt in. Erm @Sagamite did you read my first post? its all about the exposure |

For those of you using exposure as a criteria (which is even small in the big picture), incase you don't know exposure either formal or informal is part of education and as long as we are not getting it in our nigerian educational system, then sorry we still remain second to the foreign graduate |

Jakumo: Most normal teenagers would be more interested in the latest fashion trends and pop music stars, while trying to plot strategies for getting laid with the one they crave. The teenage brain is compartmentalized in two hemispheres, the right one devoted to fashion, and the left one to sex.
Politics is way too boring a consideration to appear on the radar screen of any normal teenager, and it would be strange indeed to browse any teenage oriented internet forum and encounter dissertations on bilateral relations with communist China, or the balance of trade in the Eurozone. justwise: If you have the required amount in that account before the salary is paid in then it will not affect the 28days accounting, if not then it will.
28days rules include weeks. Sorry Justwise, I didnt get you on the 28 days, does it include weekends, or its 28 weekdays? Then the required amount is already in the account, do you think the newly paid salary should be included in the 28 day statement to be printed and submitted for the visa app? |

Errm Guys
For over a month now, my sponsor has refrained from spending the money in the account whose statement I will be presenting at the embassy since the last salary was paid in (June) because of the student visa application requirements,
Now my sponsor has called me up that the salary for July would be paid in this week
Now my questions are these,
In printing the statement, should i request it be printed up on till before the July salary? By this the 28 days would have been in tact. Or do I request that it be printed with the July salary addition? (This means more funds). would the 28 days counting now start again?
The 28 day period, does it include weekends? I mean is it 28 working days?
Thanks |

Romance › Re: Boyfriend Acting Different-why? by Skii(m): 10:29pm On Jul 19, 2011 |
dstiva: I have been in a relationship with this naija guy here in the states for about 3 months with this guy who came after me, dated me, treated me well and then after about a month, he asked me to be his girlfriend. After I did, everything was cool until after about two months, I noticed his behavior changed, he would call and text me less than before so I waited some time and finally told him I didn't like it and he promised to do better, which he did for about a week. Then the next week, he went missing for a day and then after i called him twice, he finally texted me the next day saying that he was in the hospital with his sick uncle. I didn't believe him and got mad so i sent me a text saying maybe we should just be friends. He went silent, and didn't respond. The next day, I felt bad and I called and texted to apologize, and no word from him for 2 weeks! Finally, a mutual friend intervened and she confirmed that his uncle was sick and that his dad is terminally ill in naija and so he's going through a lot since he cannot be there for his family in nigeria. She got him to finally call me a few days later and when he called, I told him I was sorry again and he seemed non-chalant and polite, he didn't really want to talk about what was going on but he seemed okay, he apologized for not calling me, said he's been busy, etc. He ended the convo with "I'll talk to you later." He didn't call me again, so after a few days, I called and texted him again and he only responds to texts hours later with a polite "i'm okay just busy". After about a week, I offered (by text) to bring food to his house so I could see him as my attempt to be supportive of what he was going through and he did not respond for 2 days. When he did respond, he said "sorry, I just got this, was out of town but wish I could have been in town, thanks for the offer, i'll holla at u later". Its been another two days since that text and nothing from him. Should I just stop calling him, i feel like i am chasing him and he doesn't want me anymore. if that is the case, why not just tell me? Should I try calling him at work? Should i try to get our mutual friend to arrange a meeting? I need to know why he's treating me so bad! Or Should i be patient and leave him alone until he contacts me since he is dealing with a sick parent? or is he just using his sick family as an excuse because he doesn't care about me anymore? I haven't seen him in 3 weeks and he only lives about an hour away from me. He's acting so different towards me and I want to know why? What should I do? ^^^^thats my suggestion |

well, i got a 2.2 but its one of the unis that will consider anyways i am hoping it doesnt have anything to do with the transcript that i presented initially as that one was laden with errors. i have since obtained a corrected copy now so i dont know if making an application with "a different transcript" (albeit corrected) within the same department would appear like to them?? |
