At which pace? Did you see that in the gif? In a bid to blame a striker, you have assumed that the wide player is running at a pace so much that he is "needing to slow down" to get a cross in or lose composure. The pictures tell the story compare the position of the players in the first pic to the second pic it would tell you that bert was running at a pace to catch that ball UNLESS everyone in both pic decided to slow down which isnt likely given the danger of the situation at hand.

And I have seen Drogba, Van Persie, Tevez, Henry, Bergkamp, Van Nistelrooy all score goals from the exact position Torres was by not making the "obvious run" - the near post run you refer to. If you have watched football long enough you would know that Its an obvious run unless the defenders were absent . Even in corner kicks someone makes the near post run because its likely to be an area not well protected by the defender and keepers can be caught napping. The defenders already running backwards will find it hard changing direction to run out to defend. Torres was already running forward. Dude, this is a blame at all cost venture. If anything, Bertrand delayed. What you are doing here is blaming Bertrand for not crossing the ball quickly. You and the writer have made Bert into an accomplished passer of the ball waiting for the right run of the striker to place a perfect delivery. So what happened to the final pass. Where did it go? Torres wasted that chance by not making the right move at the right time. The margin between a goal and a wasted chance is a split second in most cases thats why they are paid top dollars for that insticnt movement and accuracy. Torres used to have it but has lost it.

Last Saturday RvP didnt score he hit the post twice, Look at the way, He headed a corner off the bar, When was the last time Torres connected with a header off a corner? In the gif you gave just now Chicharito was free as anything the time Rooney played the ball to Rafael, the gap between Chicharito and the Villa defender was about 10yards and hernandez did the instinct thing he pulled away to give himself more space/isolate himself totally. It made rafaels decision making easier chances of hitting Chica with the cross was almost as high as 80% and it was a goal.

From the Man utd gif you posted did you notice RVP's movement? his first instinct is to attack the near post before he sensed the Rafaels intended cross stopped in his tracks and tried to move back oblivious that Chicharito had his back covered. Its a basic striker instinct. Thats why a player like RvP would have easy tap ins and we would say he is just scoring tap ins. Its the movement that position you for such.

Looking at this situation the path to the cutback to Torres has been blocked and if Bert attempted it, It would be within the radius of the first defender. Thats what makes Torres near post run necessary

1. The writer of the article assumes there's "only one" sort of run to make in that area - the one he (the writer) deems the correct move.
2. The writer assumes that even though the wide player had only moved about 2 yards towards the line (very clear to see from the 2 pictures), the striker should have double that distance into the box. How possible is that in real time? Bearing in mind that we are talking about max 3 seconds of play time, the writer wants Torres to cover an enormous amount of ground as at the second picture. The writer assumes that the Torres is quicker than the wide player.
3. The writer assumes that the striker may not have anticipated a cut back, which if happened, would have turned out to be a brilliant run.
4. The writer fails to document what final ball was produced. As seen in picture 2 of the wide, with his left foot could have dinked it in the path of Torres, setting him up for a left foot volley. However, with showing the final ball, it immature to conclude that Torres' run was bad. It's even worse to blame Torres for the breakdown of the move when a clever player would have found an inch perfect player.

My point is, with careful selection, a bunch of gif images can make a good player look and conversely, make a very bad player look good. The analysis is subjective at best.

1. Its a basic rule in such situation someone has to make the near post run which would open things up, the defenders run towards him, if he beats them to it at the right angle he can have a near post tap in. Chicharito doesnt need to be told this.

2. Its basic common sense that Bertrand would slow down else if he continues at that pace he can as well run off the field or lose composure to deliver a good cross and its the players in the middle aka Torres that has to increase their speed and make things happen

3. By drawing the defenders with him the middle would have freed up. I have seen lampard score from this sort of position several times when Drogba makes the near post run and Lampard is free just inside the box to pick his spot and shoot. Thats a basic thing in football except when you have a mediocre striker

4. Torres Waiting for the cutback is stupid in that situation when there are 2 defenders also waiting for the cutback. the sensible thing was to run for the near post. He should only wait for a cutback Only if Bertrand was able to beat his man and bear him on goal. If bert did that then the 2 defenders in front of Torres would have to run to cover the near post and block Bertrands free path and shot which would leave Torres free for a cutback

5. When Torres now finally decided to make the run, where was he running toward? Away from goal!! Is that not retardded? The trajectory of Torres run would take him towards the skysport banner considering the position of the keeper the post and the space left, he has made an otherwise simple chance much harder to hit

. For the first chance Torres has some blame but not as much as the second one. The first one was lost because Torres doesnt have the Chicharito instinct nothing I can blame him for.
